After waiting an hour, we were informed that the garlic shrimp for our garlic noodles was unavailable, despite it being part of our original order. Unfortunately, the Vang rolls were so salty that we couldn't finish them. Throughout the meal, our water glasses were never refilled, and there was little communication about the delays or unavailable menu items. After roughly 90 minutes of waiting, multiple delays, and learning that several items were unavailable, we decided to pay for what we had received the two Sapporos, the shrimp sandwich, and the Vang rolls, which came to about $70. Perhaps we visited on an off night, but the combination of the slow service, poor communication, unavailable menu items, and disappointing food quality made for a frustrating experience. The Caesar salad was good, but a little hard to eat since the lettuce wasn't chopped. The atmosphere made up for it though--the decor is beautiful and we sat outside on the patio on a perfect day. It was relaxing, comfortable, and not too loud, with good music in the background. After dinner, we walked over to First Friday to end the night, which was the perfect way to walk off the meal. Fortunately, we were able to grab a couple of seats at the bar--our favorite perch. Both bartenders were friendly, attentive, and happy to answer questions about the menu while offering thoughtful recommendations. We began with the Creamy Burrata Mozzarella Salad, featuring Cobalt Farms mixed greens, tomatoes, basil pesto, extra virgin olive oil, and a balsamic reduction. It was absolutely incredible. Every ingredient tasted remarkably fresh, and the creamy burrata was the perfect centerpiece. Cobalt grows much of its own produce, and it definitely makes a difference. We also ordered a cup of their Gazpacho, and it was one of the finest renditions of this classic Spanish soup that I've ever tasted. Refreshing, flavorful, and beautifully balanced, it was the perfect way to begin the meal. My wife chose the Catch of the Day - Mediterranean Seabass Special ($36): a pan-roasted Branzino fillet topped with lobster and crab, served over a Parmesan risotto cake with fresh asparagus and finished with a rich lobster cream sauce. Every component complemented the others beautifully. The presentation was elegant, and while the photographs certainly help, they still don't do this dish justice. It was outstanding. I decided on the Double Smash Burger served with fresh-cut fries and a dill pickle spear. The burger was cooked perfectly, seasoned just right, and topped with melted cheese and grilled onions. The fries arrived piping hot, crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and finished with flaky salt. It was comfort food executed at a very high level. From the fresh ingredients to the attentive service and thoughtfully prepared dishes, Cobalt Grille delivered an exceptional dining experience from beginning to end. If you're looking for an excellent meal before a show at the Little Theatre--or simply searching for one of Virginia Beach's better dining experiences--put Cobalt Grille on your list. Although the tavern was packed with many trivia teams, our server, Loni did an amazing job with food and drink orders. Loni was very welcoming and always had a smile on her face. There were three trivia rounds of 10 questions each, followed by a bonus question. I am proud to say that I contributed to each round and surprised myself at the "wisdom" I could still muster up during the friendly, but competitive atmosphere of Trivia Night. Nick Taylor was a comical game host who worked the crowd and kept the game moving along nicely. If you're looking for a great place to relax with a cold drink and maybe try your hand at Trivia Night, The OV Beach Tavern is a great option on Thursday nights. There's lots of space indoors, a full bar that was smoothly managed by bartender Lindsay, and ample outdoor seating, too! And pets are welcome on the pet-friendly, outdoor patio.
