This is a typical pizza place. We went at 6 PM on July 5th so very busy. Service was a touch slow but we didn't feel rushed after we ate. Outdoor seating with awning and umbrellas made for a lovely evening. The food itself was good. Two pizzas and a salad were plenty for three people. First time in Connecticut and call me crazy but I personally enjoyed their Caesar salad and pizza way more than Pepe's. With house made focaccia croutons, and the salad... PERFECTLY dressed! My family and I ordered takeout. We ordered a pizza and two large salads. The pizzas are a little small and only come in one size. I was concerned we weren't going to have enough food for three, but the salads were huge so we actually ended up having leftovers. The food was ready when we walked in to pick it up, so their takeout estimates are pretty accurate. The salads were really fresh and tasty. The pizza was okay. The crust was a little chewy but it's fine if you need a quick meal. If you're looking for authentic Connecticut pizza, this isn't the place to go. The owner is very rude, and when I brought to her attention that there was mold inside my cheese that our party of 14 had used all over our food. she argue with us that she did not see any . thankfully we had taken a picture prior. We went at 5:30 on a Saturday night there was a short wait but well worth it. If you like trains they have a model train that run around the outskirts of the restaurant along with several train cars that they have displayed in cases. The servers are attentive and quick to take your order. The menu is divided into Red pizzas and White pizzas, so it is easy to find what you prefer. I had a white pizza called the loaded baked potato pizza which had sour cream, on the bottom then had a light sprinkle of garlic & pepper, topped with cheddar cheese, red potatoes, broccoli, and bacon. The original pizza did include scallions as well, but I asked to not have them. The pieces of broccoli were rather on the larger size and should have been chopped finer, but overall it was an excellent pizza. The crust was thin and perfectly cooked, and the combination of the ingredients just melted in your mouth, absolutely delicious. My boyfriend had the works, and just like the title implies it had a light covering of red tomato sauce Mozzarella, sausage, meatballs, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms and peppers and anchovies are optional if you want them. The flavors all flow nicely, the only downside side that my boyfriend didn't like was the size of the peppers and onions were rather large and should have been sliced much thinner to about a third of the size. read more

Pizza Works is a pizzeria that opened in Old Saybrook, Connecticut in 2001. It was founded by Robert Kehayias. Located at a spot historically called 'Saybrook Junction', the pizzeria has quite a connection to railroad history and memorabilia. Not only is Pizza Works located next door to the current Old Saybrook Train Station, the pizzeria is housed inside the old railroad freight depot. Constructed in 1873, the freight depot was converted into restaurant space in the late 1980s. The pizzeria's menu features over 40 specialty pizza pies as well as pasta dishes, salads and appetizers. Pizza Works also carries an impressive selection of craft beer, wine, and locally-made Foxon Park sodas. My family and I recently visited Pizza Works for lunch. Not only are we all huge fans of pizza but also trains. This was our first trip to Pizza Works and we felt like the place was made for us! The place was decorated with all sorts of railroad memorabilia and the upper floor featured very detailed model railroad displays. They were created by local model railroad enthusiast Steven Cryan; we had previously seen his holiday train displays at the Connecticut River Museum. We asked to be seated upstairs so our son could see all of the displays. For food, we ordered and shared the "Rosie's Special" (mozzarella, sliced Roma tomatoes, crispy bacon - white version), the "Loaded Baked Potato" (sour cream, chopped garlic, pepper, white cheddar, scallions, sliced red potatoes, broccoli, crispy bacon) and the "Eggplant Parmesan" (mozzarella, roasted red & yellow house roasted peppers, breaded eggplant). This was excellent pizza! I would liken it more to New York-style pizza than the thin, charred pizzas that New Haven is known for. We washed everything down with some Foxon Park White Birch Beer. Between the delicious food, the model trains, and the real trains passing outside, our son never wanted to leave! We all had a blast and can't wait to return to Pizza Works! read more

Two years ago, I gave this place a two star review. Not for the food, but because they now closed ridiculously early. Like most vacationers, we spend the sunlight hours on the beach, come back to our cottage, and decide on dinner. By that time it's about 7:30/8pm. Just in time for Pizza Works to CLOSE. Needless to say, I haven't been back since. I still come to the shore for a couple weeks every year, and thought I'd give them a try again. I figure I'd do lunch instead of dinner. You know, because I'm not an 80 year old who eats dinner at 4:30. So it's a Tuesday, and I check the hours. They don't open til 3:30. And STILL close at 7:30! They're open for 4 hours. 4 HOURS!! Well, I guess lunch is out now too. The owner responded to my post from two years ago saying the pandemic changed restaurant hours. You know. The pandemic from OVER 4 YEARS AGO! It seems the pandemic only changed the hours at Pizza Works, because all the other restaurants I know seem to have decided it was time to move back to normalcy instead of living in the past. So down to one star. I'll check again next year, but I don't have much faith. And since I can't do zero stars on Yelp,.... I appreciate the owner's prompt response. And I think the pizza is very good. However, I frequent many local establishments, and Pizza Works has the shortest hours and earliest closing time I've seen. I'm sorry, but being open a total of 12 hours over three days? Not good. My cable company gives me a bigger window. read more

This place is a SOLIDLY GOOD choice for Italian pasta, pizza, salads, & sandwiches. All pizzas are 12 inch with 8 slices. It was a Sunday & they were closing in 20 mins (8 pm) so I just settled on the cheese pizza to make it easy. I drove over & it was ready in 12 mins. It was cooked perfectly. The crust was fresh & had a slight crunch but nice soft chewy texture. The sauce had a nice sweet tangy flavor with a lovely amount of fresh garlic that came through on every bite. You could also taste the fresh Italian herbs in it also. They had an ample amount of mozzarella on top but not too much to make it gloppy. I LOVED IT. It reminded me of the fantastic pizzerias in Manhattan. I was so happy bc it's really hard to find GREAT CONSISTENT PIZZERIAS nowadays. I am really looking forward to trying their salads & grinders. Wish I could review the food. We didn't ever get served! Weekday dinner time and the place was plenty full. Our party of 4 stopped at 2 different host stations before finally hunting down a staff member to be seated. What a great idea! Manager Dave was extremely helpful and lead me in the right direction regarding favorite salads that they serve. We ordered a tray of their Chopped Pasta and Chicken Salad (a huge hit!), and a tray of Dave's Caesar Salad (they make their own croutons!) They were delicious ! The best thing about this meal was the bottled sodas. They were really good and from a local spot nearby! I got the field greens salad and it was ok- I didn't really like the balsamic vinaigrette they used and when I asked for chicken, it was the cold cubes they use on pizza which was hard to eat. My fiancé got the meat lovers pizza with a side of ranch. It was ok. Every time I have been here the waiters are always great and attentive. I got the sausage cacciatore pizza which was delicious. Every pizza I have tried has been delicious. I must give a shout out to this place. Yesterday we were on a stuck Amtrak train and hungry. My grandson is a pizza fanatic. I looked out the window and there you were. The conductor warned us not to get off the train but who could resist. I called and asked if my eyes were true . The woman that answered was so nice. Offered salads to be quick but we did the 12 minute pizza. My grandson was so panicked about getting the pizza and watching the train go by. I called back and said let's do it. 10 mins later I called again and got this nice young man . He knew about us and offered a pie that just came out. My grandson ran so fast and made it. We went for dinner here before attending a show at The Kate...Katharine Hepburn cultural arts center. They have lots of options including gluten free & the salad is large enough to share with several people. There was 5 of us in our party & we ordered 4 pizzas & still had leftovers to bring home. Pizza sauce was delicious & the atmosphere is inviting. Cool train that goes around the inside of the restaurant that will delight children young & old. We have been going here for years with our extended family, including kids now aged 9, 7, 7, 2, and 1.5. The mediocre pizza, plastic tablecloths, and model trains are well-suited for kids. As happens with kids, some food ended up on the floor. We were on hands and knees picking up the leftovers, when the server kindly said "We'll get that. We always sweep up after kids." Still, we left a 30% tip to recognize the extra effort. We were in the waiting area, packing up the kids for the trip home when a guy aggressively approached us. "Hey - no more food. That table is disgusting. It looks like a bunch of animals came through here." I was taken aback. We had tried to pick up after ourselves, and the mess wasn't terrible (mostly dry crusts). Still, I apologized again and focused on getting coats on the kids. My wife was sitting off to the side, giving our daughter a bottle before the car ride home. The guy returned. "We're closing up here. You guys gotta go." It was 8pm, and they were clearly still open/seating new parties. We were out of the way, and the restaurant wasn't busy. I asked if he is the owner/manager, and he said he was. Everyone has bad days, but being rude to my kids and wife at a purportedly kid friendly establishment crosses the line for me. I have only experienced the pick up service and it is great they attend you quickly and when they give you a time it's not one minute late, which I really like.
