We went here for a Father's Day dinner and it did not disappoint. The service was great and super fast...we were shocked by how quickly everything came out! The calamari was good and the bread/oil and broccoli rabe...great! We all enjoyed our entrees and my husband and daughter liked the pink vodka sauce on their chicken Parmesan. Atmosphere is casual and we sat in a nicely updated dining room.

If you're a foodie, like me, you do your best to find the 5-star spots when you're out of town--or, in town for that matter ;) But sometimes they can be hard to come by, or if you're own a tight schedule and need something good for lunch that's "on the your way home." This was the case for when we stopped in at Luigi's on our return trip from coastal Connecticut. The food was good, the dining room and clean and comfortable and pleasantly decorated. The service was good. Am I going to rush back if I happen to be in the area? No. But that's no a reflection on Luigi's. It's a solid choice on my book. But I'll be on the look out for my next 5-star dinner (assuming I have the time).

One of my favorites Vanessa was our server and has been many times. The food was outstanding as always. The family restaurant is one of the biggest families in the most beautiful restaurant. Always clean the help is always the same that's because they are great people clearly to work for.

"There's a fella named Luigi He comes from Italy I wanna be like Luigi 'cause he's always got money" (Louis Prima) We spent the day in lovely Old Saybrook and had a very nice lunch at Luigi's. We started off with their complimentary bread basket, which was terrific, with a big portion of pillowy Italian bread served with oil and butter. A few sprinkles of oil, some parmesan cheese and black pepper made my slice quite delicious. We shared a salad and a grinder for lunch. Their Luigi Special Salad ($16) was excellent. It was a big portion of Romaine, tomatoes, cucumber, chopped, Italian cold cuts and provolone, tuna salad, and black olives. We went with a Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing that was very good. The portion size was big enough for us to take some of it home. Our chicken parm grinder ($14) was oven toasted with melted Mozzarella, and marinara sauce. The bread was very good, and the chicken cutlets were outstanding . We shared half of the grinder and took the rest home. Thirty bucks before tax and tip was a very good value for 2 lunches and leftovers. The food and service were top notch.

Came last year for a belated Valentines dinner and decided to come again for this year! We made a reservation in advance, ended up being during a snow storm and us mixing up our reservation times but we had no problem being seated by very friendly staff. It is very cozy inside. Our server Erin was very polite, helpful, and friendly. We have been waiting a year to order an app of warm bread and garlic dressing to dip (different from the garlic bread). We love this!! The garlic dip is so refreshing and tasteful. I ordered the penne alla vodka, the pasta was cooked more on the harder al dente side than I preferred but it tasted better left over the next day. I even added some of the garlic dressing on top of my pasta. They serve the garlic dip in pint or quart sizes for take away which we left with a pint in hand. Tastes just as good at home as it does in the restaurant. We each ordered a martini as well, I had a pistachio martini, although it did not taste much like pistachio I very much enjoyed it, it was creamy but did not sit too heavy. My boyfriend ordered an Italian Manhattan martini which was very strong and could've been considered two drinks in one. All in all, we have not yet been disappointed with the service and look forward to coming again for next year's valentines celebration.

Came here w/ my family. I thought the food here was delicious! I ordered six cheese Italian purses( it is pasta "purses" filled w/a mixture of 6 cheeses & tossed in creamy Alfredo sauce). My nephew was seated next to me so I was able to get a photo of his chicken parm. He said it was yummy! The waiter & bus boy were very attentive & nice! Inside is fancy looking! It is also low key & quiet which I like when I'm having dinner.

If you ever wondered what would happen if Goodfellas, The Godfather, When Harry Met Sally, and a…read moresun-drenched afternoon on the Amalfi Coast all got together for Sunday dinner... the answer is La Marea in Old Saybrook. The name La Marea means "the tide," and after one visit you'll understand why. Like the tide itself, you just keep coming back. I've eaten my way from the seafood markets of Sicily to the cafés of Rome, the canals of Venice, the vineyards of Tuscany, and the bustling trattorias of Milan. I've spent enough time arguing over pasta shapes to qualify as an honorary Italian uncle. I don't throw around the phrase authentic Italian lightly. La Marea earns it. From the moment you walk through the doors, you're welcomed like you've just returned home after a very long vacation. Juliana is the kind of hostess who somehow remembers everyone, makes every guest feel like family, and radiates the warmth that reminds you of every wonderful Italian grandmother you've ever wished you had. She has that magical gift of making the entire restaurant feel less like a business and more like a celebration. Then there's Nino. Every great Italian restaurant has a heartbeat. Nino is La Marea's. His decades of culinary experience and deep Italian roots shine through every detail. You can tell immediately that this isn't about trends or gimmicks--it's about family, hospitality, tradition, and food prepared with genuine pride. The restaurant beautifully blends northern and southern Italian cuisine, using imported Italian ingredients alongside fresh local products, and the seasonal menu keeps every visit exciting while staying true to its heritage. (LaMarea Ristorante) The staff? Absolutely phenomenal. Professional without being stuffy. Friendly without being overbearing. They somehow anticipate what you need before you know you need it. Glasses stay full. Plates appear at exactly the right moment. Conversations flow naturally. It's the kind of service that has become all too rare. And then... Brad. If cocktails were an Olympic event, Brad would need a bigger trophy case. Watching him behind the bar is like watching Tom Cruise in Cocktail--only with better drinks and significantly fewer broken bottles. Every cocktail arrives balanced, beautiful, and dangerously delicious. La Marea's craft and pre-Prohibition-inspired cocktail program is already impressive, but Brad elevates it into an experience. One drink turns into two, two somehow become "well...maybe just one more," and before long you're discussing whether Sinatra or Billy Joel made the better soundtrack for Italian dinners. Now let's discuss the food. The calamari? Outstanding. The Bolognese? Quite possibly one of the finest expressions of comfort food known to humanity. Combine the two? Forget NASA--we've discovered the greatest culinary achievement since someone first decided olive oil belonged on bread. If there is better calamari Bolognese anywhere on Earth, I haven't found it--and I've looked. Everything else follows the same philosophy. Homemade and carefully sourced pastas. Exceptional antipasti. Beautiful seafood. Wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas. Outstanding steaks. House-made desserts that somehow convince you there's always room for one more bite. The menu reflects the seasons while remaining rooted in authentic Italian tradition, and every plate feels thoughtfully prepared rather than simply assembled. (LaMarea Ristorante) And then comes dessert. You tell yourself you're full. You are lying to yourself. Order dessert anyway. Trust me. What makes La Marea truly special isn't just the exceptional food or outstanding cocktails. It's the feeling. It's the laughter coming from neighboring tables. It's seeing Juliana greeting guests with genuine joy. It's Nino making the rounds. It's the staff working together like a family. It's that rare restaurant where nobody is trying too hard because they don't have to. Everything simply works. Walking out of La Marea feels a little like the ending of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. You don't want the experience to be over. You're already planning your next visit before you've even reached the parking lot. Five stars don't seem like enough. If Michelin awarded stars for making people genuinely happy, La Marea would need a new constellation. Bravo, Juliana. Bravo, Nino. Bravo to the entire staff. And Brad... keep those cocktails coming. I'll happily continue my very serious research. Highly. Enthusiastically. Deliciously recommended.

Sal's Pizza & Pasta - Old Saybrook, CT…read more Slice Mob Takeover Nine members of the Slice Mob walked into Sal's Pizza & Pasta hungry. The pizzas never stood a chance. Located in Old Saybrook, Sal's is spacious, comfortable, and welcoming, with Italian classics playing in the background and plenty of room for a large gathering. It proved to be the perfect setting for a Slice Mob takeover. A variety of pizzas made their way to our tables, but I started with the basics: crushed tomatoes, fresh garlic, and grated Parmesan. Sometimes simple is best. Built on a beautifully crisp crust that held up from first bite to last, this pizza let the tomatoes shine. They were lightly seasoned and full of flavor, supported by the punch of garlic and the salty bite of Parmesan. No unnecessary distractions. Just a really well-executed pizza. Next up was Sal's Works. Same great crust and sauce foundation, loaded with sausage, pepperoni, bacon, roasted peppers, mushrooms, onions, and mozzarella. This pie struck a nice balance between meat-lover indulgence and vegetable-forward freshness. The toppings were applied with restraint and purpose, allowing every ingredient to contribute. Salty, sweet, savory, and packed with contrasting textures, from crispy bacon to tender sausage and vegetables, every bite worked. As more pizzas arrived, the room got a little quieter. That's usually a good sign. The Slice Mob tends to have plenty to say, but when great pizza hits the table, conversation takes a back seat. What stood out most? Not a single complaint from anyone. And if you've ever dined with the Slice Mob, you know that's about as rare as finding a parking spot in New Haven on a Saturday night. Michael, the second-generation owner, came out to greet us and pose for a photo. Super nice guy, humble, appreciative, and genuinely happy to see us. He also couldn't help but comment on the number of pizzas we ordered. Fair observation. We may have slightly exceeded the recommended daily allowance of pizza. The restaurant is beautiful. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. And perhaps most surprising in today's world, the prices were incredibly reasonable. Judging by the smiles around the room, the empty trays, and the steady stream of pizzas coming out of the kitchen, Sal's didn't just feed the Slice Mob. They won us over. Great owners. Great staff. Great pizza. Sal's Pizza & Pasta is officially Slice Mob Approved. Pizza is life. See you at the next slice.

We ordered a large regular pizza with extra cheese and a large salad. Before the food came out, the server brought us a large basket of warm bread and butter, which we were not expecting. That won us over immediately. Before long, she brought us an absolutely enormous salad. It had a nice variety of vegetables and a delicious balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing. The pizza was perfectly cooked with a slight char, a nicely flavored cheese mix and a slightly sweet tomato sauce. The crust was thin and had a great texture. We were thrilled, and will definitely be back.
