We had a farewell dinner with old friends at Luigi's last night. I can't think of a better place for our nostalgic and bittersweet parting. Our waiter Matt, played right into our intimate family vibe by calling us Aunt and Uncle. Now, to get to the food! Nothing says "love" like good Italian food. The artichoke hearts were crispy on the outside with soft centers, just like us! The pasta dishes are just like Mama made and the eggplant dishes are better than my Nonnas. Our hearts and bellies were filled but the next day was to be a long travel day for our friends. Two pizzas to go plus our leftovers were carried out by these satiated diners. We went here for a Father's Day dinner and it did not disappoint. The service was great and super fast...we were shocked by how quickly everything came out! The calamari was good and the bread/oil and broccoli rabe...great! We all enjoyed our entrees and my husband and daughter liked the pink vodka sauce on their chicken Parmesan. We recently hosted our son's rehearsal dinner in the private room at Luigi's, and it couldn't have been more perfect! From the start, Nancy, the manager, was amazing--so helpful and accommodating every step of the way. She made planning for our 30 guests so easy, from the open bar and appetizers to a beautiful champagne toast. Matt, the owner's son, was equally incredible--he worked the bar, helped serve, and made sure every guest was happy. His energy and attention to detail really stood out. And the food... absolutely delicious! Everyone commented on how flavorful their meals were. It's easy to see why Luigi's is such a local favorite in Old Saybrook. If you're a foodie, like me, you do your best to find the 5-star spots when you're out of town--or, in town for that matter ;) But sometimes they can be hard to come by, or if you're own a tight schedule and need something good for lunch that's "on the your way home." This was the case for when we stopped in at Luigi's on our return trip from coastal Connecticut. The food was good, the dining room and clean and comfortable and pleasantly decorated. The service was good. Am I going to rush back if I happen to be in the area? No. But that's no a reflection on Luigi's. It's a solid choice on my book. But I'll be on the look out for my next 5-star dinner (assuming I have the time). read more

"There's a fella named Luigi He comes from Italy I wanna be like Luigi 'cause he's always got money" (Louis Prima) We spent the day in lovely Old Saybrook and had a very nice lunch at Luigi's. We started off with their complimentary bread basket, which was terrific, with a big portion of pillowy Italian bread served with oil and butter. A few sprinkles of oil, some parmesan cheese and black pepper made my slice quite delicious. We shared a salad and a grinder for lunch. Their Luigi Special Salad ($16) was excellent. It was a big portion of Romaine, tomatoes, cucumber, chopped, Italian cold cuts and provolone, tuna salad, and black olives. We went with a Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing that was very good. The portion size was big enough for us to take some of it home. Our chicken parm grinder ($14) was oven toasted with melted Mozzarella, and marinara sauce. The bread was very good, and the chicken cutlets were outstanding . We shared half of the grinder and took the rest home. Thirty bucks before tax and tip was a very good value for 2 lunches and leftovers. The food and service were top notch. read more

Came last year for a belated Valentines dinner and decided to come again for this year! We made a reservation in advance, ended up being during a snow storm and us mixing up our reservation times but we had no problem being seated by very friendly staff. It is very cozy inside. Our server Erin was very polite, helpful, and friendly. We have been waiting a year to order an app of warm bread and garlic dressing to dip (different from the garlic bread). We love this!! The garlic dip is so refreshing and tasteful. I ordered the penne alla vodka, the pasta was cooked more on the harder al dente side than I preferred but it tasted better left over the next day. I even added some of the garlic dressing on top of my pasta. They serve the garlic dip in pint or quart sizes for take away which we left with a pint in hand. Tastes just as good at home as it does in the restaurant. We each ordered a martini as well, I had a pistachio martini, although it did not taste much like pistachio I very much enjoyed it, it was creamy but did not sit too heavy. My boyfriend ordered an Italian Manhattan martini which was very strong and could've been considered two drinks in one. All in all, we have not yet been disappointed with the service and look forward to coming again for next year's valentines celebration. read more

Came here w/ my family. I thought the food here was delicious! I ordered six cheese Italian purses( it is pasta "purses" filled w/a mixture of 6 cheeses & tossed in creamy Alfredo sauce). My nephew was seated next to me so I was able to get a photo of his chicken parm. He said it was yummy! The waiter & bus boy were very attentive & nice! Inside is fancy looking! My friends and I do a monthly dinner out. Each time, we try and choose a different spot. This place was a very happy surprise. The food was excellent, generous portions, all ingredients fresh and well prepared. The staff was both friendly and knowledgeable. It was a busy night, but we did not have much of a wait before our food arrived. Steaming hot and beautifully presented. The place was spotlessly clean as well, with bathrooms immaculate and well stocked. 10 out of 10 for this lovely family owned establishment. We will return! read more

I have been to Luigi's many times, but won't go there again. I had Veal Marsala which is what I have ordered many times. It was terrible! The sauce was very thin. The veal was in "nugget" shape and overcooked! Even the salad wasn't good. Some of the lettuce was reddish on the ends. My husband had lasagna and he said he would rather get it at a business that precooked the lasagna . Such a shame read more

This place is beautiful! However, unless you're a regular, you won't get much attention. We sat at the bar and were asked by the bartender to move down 3 times so his regular customers could have their preferred seats. The last time we had just gotten our food and refused to move. We probably should have just left, because the food was tasteless. Not a fan and probably won't be back. read more

My family has been coming to Luigi's for years now during the summer. We tend to stay away on busy nights as service can be longer. But that doesn't change the food which is always hot and delicious. Inside reminds you of an old built home which adds to the experience. I tend to go for either the Luigi's Salad or the grinder, both are huge. read more

All I could say is the food went down considerably and if I had to make a positive statement, I would say they should send their chefs over to big Y to learn how to make pizza because they do a better job. Went to Luigi's last night for a casual dinner. Hadn't been to Luigi's since I was a teenager (over 50 years ago!)and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The atmosphere is quiet and definitely upgraded from a typical Italian pizza place. Our waitress was a delight! She was efficient, professional and helpful with suggestions when I couldn't decide between 2 Entrees. The food was very good too. The house salads are generous and I loved the flavor of the house-made garlic dressing, it was just a little thin. My husband had the Bolognese and I had baked stuffed shrimp. It was delicious with no shells to pick through and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. We ended up with their dessert special--a butter toffee almond bundt cake with ice cream! So different and so delicious! Once a summer, we look to go out for dinner with our sons and daughters-in-law and Luigi's will definitely be on our "short list"! read more

We've been here a few times since the re-opening. So far the appetizers, bread, and salads have been wonderful. Fried mozzarella is so amazing. The side salad was fresh and delicious. I loved the creamy garlic dressing I got with it. The bread was warm and fresh. One thing that always bothers me when we come here is the butter. They leave them in the refrigerator until they serve them, which means they are cold and hard and unable to spread. I really wish they would leave the butters out so that we could spread them. The entrées have been disappointing. My husband got the prime rib with au jus sauce last night and threw out at least half of it. My son and I both tried it as well, and it had a very weird taste to it. I hate to say this, but the au jus sauce reminded me of pet urine. My son ended up spitting it out. I also heard the guy at the table behind us talking about how his was terrible as well to his wife and how his baked potato was cold. The sliced tomato pieces and dandelion greens for the veggie side was a little weird for this dish, we thought. My lobster ravioli was just OK. I wouldn't order it again. It had a little bit of spiciness to it which most people wouldn't mind but I do not like spicy so I wasn't a big fan of it. If it had said it in the menu, I would not have ordered it. My son ordered the chicken tenders which he had had there before and loved, but for some reason after his first bite, he said he didn't like it and the whole plate got thrown out. That could have just been him being a kid but I'm not sure. I didn't try them. The new decor and ambience after the latest renovation is very nice. The whole building looks beautiful and welcoming. The staff are always very friendly, although it took a very long time just to get our drink order yesterday. However, my cosmo that I ordered off of their drink menu was delicious. I did hear something going on in the other room that sounded like maybe the staff were all over there to sing happy birthday or something though, so it may have been that. I always really want to love this place and really do love all of the starters, so always want to give it another chance, but we always end up leaving disappointed. I might just go there in the future just for the fried mozzarella, salads, and fresh warm bread. read more

I think this place is your great go to comfort Italian joint. With seating indoor and patio seasoning in the summer there is room for your fam. Very old school inside dating back to the heritage of family owned. Staff is friendly. We get to go a lot and it is always hit or miss with the time estimate provided or getting the order correct. They do have beer and wine inside alongside fountain drinks. I love their grinders, you can order them hot or cold and they are fantastic. Great for taking on the boat or on the go, you can't go wrong with any of them. Best sandwiches in Old Saybrook hands down. Their portions are wonderful and everything is reasonably priced. First time back since the remodel.. AMAZING, to say the least! Attentive staff, clean dining area and bathrooms and good energy. Started with Pistachio and Almond coconut martinis; Excellent! We split the Calamari, Caesar salad, Chicken Marsala and Lasagna. Everything was fresh, great flavors, and good portions. All at a reasonable price.
