I will not lie when I say that this place brings back such nostalgia for me. From when they used to be in the grand union plaza to the move up with Starway. I've been living in Indiana since 2014 and I LONG for the plain cheese pizza. My wife and I just had our first baby and my dad came out to visit. He brought me two large pizzas 11 hours in the car. It still tastes like it did the first time I ever tried it. Everything is blended together in such harmony. The dough recipe, the cheese blend, and the amazingly prepared sauce. Thank you pizza star for giving this first time dad another reason to cry happy tears this week! This pizza is not only delicious as fresh made or reheated, but cold from the fridge for breakfast. As a born-and-raised New Yorker, I've had pizza from just about everywhere -- and I'm sorry to say that my experience at Pizza Star was one of the most disappointing I've ever had. I ordered two slices: one pepperoni and one broccoli. Both tasted old, not fresh, and were overly greasy. The crust -- the whole bottom part of the slice -- was hard, stale, and honestly felt like it had been sitting out for a long time. For $9 for two slices, I expected at least something decent, especially in New York. I could've made better pizza at home. To be fair, the place itself is very clean, including the bathrooms, and I know this spot has been around for many years. I don't know the owners personally -- I was just passing through -- but it was dinner time and the food should have been much better. Even the connected diner (which I believe shares the same owner) didn't seem any more promising. I really hope they reconsider the quality of the pizza they're serving, because it genuinely has potential if the basics were done right: fresh dough, fresh pies, and proper reheating. I passed another pizza shop on the way here but chose Pizza Star because of the ratings... and I regret it. This experience reminded me that Google reviews aren't always the best guide on where to eat. If the owners put the same effort into the pizza as they do in maintaining a clean space, this place could be great -- but right now, it's not somewhere I'd return to. read more

I have known the family over 40 years. The quality has never changed. The recipes have always been the same.. The service has always been quick and Friendly . I remember.when Piizza Star was down in the Jamesway plaza.It was a small pizza place. I remember it was always clean. Everybody was dressed sharp white pants and if I remember correctly they had green shirts with narrow stripes on them. The owner (john) Swore at me and called me and my family liars. We returned food because the cheese was bad and he claimed nothing was wrong. He told us we were no longer welcome! My family has been going to pizza star for over 30 years. Yelled and claimed he never lied. He says he doesn't lie and he claimed he repeats back every order when he doesn't. Just had a quick dinner of pizza slices and salad. Excellent pizza. Perfect crust. Excellent sauce. Salad was large. Fed two people. 3 slices, a sausage roll, salad (bread included) and two beverages for 25.00! Clean place, great food. Highly recommend! read more

For what pizza star is, you cannot beat it. They have overall consistently good pizza, chicken parmigiana wedge etc.. I like their white broccoli pizza. I am from the Bronx and is it the best pizza i have ever eaten? No, but it is consistently good and has a family friendly atmosphere. Absolute best pizza in town. I've been enjoying Pizza Star for 30+ years- since they were just a little tiny grab and go place in the old Jamesway Plaza! I've never once gotten a bad pie from Pizza Star! No fancy hipster garbage pizza with artisan crust here, just absolutely delicious, fresh classic pizza that never disappoints. We stopped at this restaurant after an exhausting hike at Overlook Mountain. The downtowns areas of Woodstock and Saugerties were both quite packed so we stopped in at Pizza Star, which was easy to find with plenty of parking. Inside, the restaurant is very clean and modern. The menu was displayed on an electronic display, and there was lots of seating. We ordered garlic knots, a pizza and some drinks. The food came out quickly (much appreciated when you have kids who are hungry), and was surprisingly good. Everything was tasty and it hit the spot after a long hike out of town - plus, the prices are all very reasonable. The bathrooms were also very clean. Great place with great service. The employees were helpful and friendly. Will definitely go back if we are in the area. The kids got some desserts from the cooler when we were done with lunch. read more

Moved back to NY after well let's just say more than 20 years... over the past 3 years, I've went to tons of restaurants that served pizza in search of the perfect slice- I used to find nearly everywhere with homemade sauce, real and just the right amount of mozzarella, and crust thin on bottom and just enough around the edges. Finally, I've found it! The gentleman behind the counter twirling the dough - super kind and skilled... and the gentleman who took my order exceptional customer service. I lived in Saugerties as a kid, and moved away in 1992. Back then Pizza Star was between Jamesway and Grand Union, and was the best pizza I've ever had. It is still the bar that I measure other pizzas to. Fast forward 26 years, and we took a vacation back to visit family. I had raved about Pizza Star to my husband, and he was dubious of my claims that it is THE BEST PIZZA EVER, thinking my judgement was clouded by time. Let me tell you: HE WAS WRONG!!! I was so worried that it had changed, but that went out the window- new location, same pizza! The best crust, the best seasoning in the sauce, and the best fold. We live in Arizona, and I don't think we can (HONESTLY!!!) get any pizza in our state that tastes so good- and at such an amazing price!!! Damn I wish Pizza Star could be cloned!!! read more

I have eaten here on 4 diffetent occasions; each experience worse than the last. Unfortunately it is open later than most places so i gave them 4 different chances, the pizza sucks the dishes suck and the sandwhichs suck service was not any better and the attitudes are even worse. Try Fredericos in the shopping center next door or slices on Main st.Their food was so bad I had to break my cardinal rule and eat McDonald's because it was the only other place open, anyone who knows me knows mcdonalds is no no for me so that tells you how bad it was read more

Looking at a business card, it says 'Starway Cafe'. I was really confused as it has been over a week and I dont remember going to a cafe/diner. Well, the pizza portion of the business is in the back. Parked there in the thunderstorm and went inside to order. They had Sicilian pizza on the menu, so ordered one of those. It was about 14$ and filled up 2 guys for both dinner and breakfast the next day. While I waited, the employees were nice enough to refill a water bottle for me. Before I left, loaded the pizza with garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Its good to know this place exists for future trips to the Catskills for hiking. Pretty decent pizza! read more

If you want to find some authentic New York pizza in Saugerties look no further. This place has awesome pizza - thin, cripsy bottom with a great sauce and just enough cheese. Their sausage rolls are amazing as well. Pizza Star has been a Saugerties landmark for over 20 years. There is definately a reason behind their longevity. read more

It astonishes me that I have yet to review Pizza Star! So here we go... I really like Pizza Star. It's SUPER consistent, reasonably priced and quick. I've never gotten anything bad there (although their garlic knots are nowhere near as AWESOME as Tori G's....seriously, check out their pepperoni garlic knots!!). The service is really great too. I once was there and saw a dad and his probably 4 year old son come in and order slices, and the owner (I think?) cut up the one slice and brought it to the kid, which I thought was really sweet and thoughtful. Best damn food I've ever had! The garlic knots will blow your socks off! I highly recommend the mozzarella sticks.

Order and paid for a 5 topping pizza. Got home and found out it was not the pizza we order . Call to speak with the owner who was not there. They verified over phone it was the wrong order but we live 24 minutes away and was not going back . They offered no help at all when I went back to store next day. Pizza was very bad threw in garage. Could have gotten a better frozen pizza. Sorry we will never go back. Can't stay in business serving crap read more

Who would have ever thought that a pizza place in Saugerties would have good pizza. It was by far the best NY style pizza I have had. It compares to the best I have had in The Bronx. I would go out of my way for this pizza. Service was great, Atmosphere is very good.. Highly recommend. read more

Very nice pizza by guys who are fast and meticulous. Clean. Only down side and it's a deal breaker in my world, there are 4 large blaring TVs in the place all tuned to different channels. It's painful to be in the place. The lights are overly bright and by 1/2 way through the meal I'm exhausted. 1 TV near the staff, IF THEY MUST, is a bummer. read more

Get the cannolis. Yes, the pizza is great, salad was excellent, but do not leave without a cannoli. We ordered one to go, and actually turned the car around to go back and get more after biting into it. It was that good. Most are too small or too big. This one was perfect. Not loaded with chocolate chips, just a few mixed in for that extra chocolatey crunchy surprise. Shell and filling were just perfect. No need to elaborate there. Also had a great ice cream selection. I've been eating at Pizza Star for longer than I can remember and it remains my favorite pizza in the area. The typical red sauce pizzas are top notch, but it is the white pizza with broccoli that keeps me coming back. I can see the expressions on some readers faces... "white pizza?" ... "with broccoli?" .... YES! It is actually a popular combination regionally, but Pizza Star's is the best by far, and they usually have it by the slice if you're not brave enough to order a whole pie. Pizza Star is also under the same management and in the same building as The Starway Cafe diner, so you can sit in the diner for a varied menu and pizza lovers can still get their fix. read more
