He provided us the 3 wrong pizzas for our dinner party,including failing to provide a veggie pizza for certain of our guests. He refused to provide a credit when I called to let him know. Each of three large pies was incorrect. He refused to provide a credit for his gross mistake. When I pressed, he offered instead to have me drive back in during my dinner party with the wrong pies to replace with correct ones: which would have take an hour during our party. We are super satisfied repeat customers at Lucoli. We've had pizza all over New York and this is hands down some of the best we ever had. The restaurant has a spectacular handmade pizza oven that turns out charred and crispy crust. Toppings are fresh with robust flavor. The owner is super friendly. We travel relatively far for this pizza and it's worth it! We are content eating in the parking lot for that fresh out-of-the-oven crisp crust. If you like roasted eggplant, try the Melanzana. We've been many times since, but it's completely takeout now. My favorite is the Pizza Napolotena with no topping; just the essence of great pizza with no frills. They par-cook them in advance, so usually it is just ready to hit the oven when you arrive at the promised time, which is what you want. This is not your everyday ordinary pizza joint. The owner is a pizza purest. He is very proud of his place and has clearly put a lot of care into producing an authentic product. He is very friendly and enjoyed talking about what goes in to his pizza. The ovens at Lucoli are wood fired which were crafted by the owner and they are beautiful. While chatting with him he explained the science behind them. He has also been contracted to build wood fired ovens for other businesses. His approach to sauce is unique as well. He doesn't believe in using olive oil to prepare it. He roasts the tomatoes and aromatics in the oven and adds olive oil after the fact. This produces a very flavorful and pure sauce which works quite well. The final and probably most impressive draw here is that they make homemade mozzarella. We were fortunate enough to try it right as it came out. It really is delicious. Light and flavorful. A perfect amount of salt. My party ordered a pizza with half pepperoni and half cheese. Char was noticeable on the crust and the pizza in general was soft but still crispy. The pepperoni was unremarkable. I think the sausage might be the way to go in the future. The best pizza I have ever had? Not really but the incredibly pure ingredients and wood fired oven make this a must pizza stop. read more

A group of us came here as part of a pizza tour and we all absolutely loved it. It is located in a small building buried in the back of a parking lot that is hard to find. Considering his quality product, I think he could probably move someplace larger and do more business. We came in and were the only ones there. There were 3-4 tables and some counter stools. The place looked cluttered like it was being redone though I don't think that is the case. We ordered a half-plain cheese, half pepperoni pizza. The crust had been par-baked and I watched them make our pizza. The cheese was homemade sliced mozzarella (you could watch them cut huge chunks of it into slices on the deli slicer in the back) and the pepperoni was standard fare. The sauce looked pale red, like a vodka sauce or perhaps an Indian masala sauce. It was generously applied. In only a few minutes, or "in three spins of the oven," it was done. It was fantastic. The crust was thin, crunchy on the edge, perfectly bronze on the bottom, and with a great chew. The cheese, being homemade and applied perfectly, was there to add flavor and a rich mouth feel. The pepperoni was nondescript and I don't think it added much beyond salt and perhaps grease. The sauce was another matter. Two of the people loved it, though my wife and I didn't enjoy it. It was clearly different. I thought it was odd, like something that might be on an Indian buffet. I tasted hints of mustard (which obviously there were none, but I couldn't put my finger on it). My friends thought I was crazy. After eating, we talked with the owner for a bit. He has been doing this for longer than I have been alive. He has toured the world helping people set up pizza ovens, and even did some for restaurants in Albany and Clifton Park where we are from. He loves what he does. As the comments in my introduction make clear, he could do a lot better somewhere else. He must have ties to this area to stay in such a small place. I also mentioned we were torn about not ordering the sausage and asked for a little cup to try some. I offered to pay for it. He gave our group a large container (over a cup's worth) of his sausage for free. It was good sausage plain, but was light on the salt and fat. On an already greasy pizza, it would have been stellar. Next time, ignore the guy who wants pepperoni only and instead order the pizza with sausage. You won't regret it. We also discussed the sauce with the owner and while I won't give away his secrets he does oven roast his onions which might be why I didn't enjoy it as much (onions... boo!). After talking with him about cheesemaking, we sat in the parking lot shooting the breeze for 10 minutes when he came out with a huge wooden spoon dripping (literally) with hot, fresh mozzarella. He wanted us to try it! Oooh, was it fantastic. One guy in our group said it was easy to make at home. I defy him to make it his way as good as this! This was not only the highlight of our pizza tour for me, but just the beginning of what I hope are more experiences here. Lucoli in Red Hook, NY is some of the best pizza I've ever eaten. Located about 8 mikes north Rheinback, NY in Dutchess county, about 90 miles north of Manhattan is incredible. I had the large Neapolitan Pie, so tasty. Fire-roasted tomato sauce which is incredibly flavorful, local extra virgin olive oil and fresh mozzarella make this pizza insanely delicious! The sauce lacked flavor for me and a tad overpriced for what was delivered. It's a bit unclear when you enter as to how the place works and we didn't exactly have an explanation or overly warm welcome. I had to keep getting up from the table and asking lots of questions. Don't blink! You'll miss this hidden gem in Red Hook, NY. This is the only thing that I would hold against Lucoli is their lack of visibility. Anybody familiar with the Hudson Valley food scene knows the importance of local, fresh, artisanship, and accessibility. Chef gets his produce local. The cheese, fire roasted tomato sauce, and dough is made fresh daily. Chef has designed and built the special ovens that cook the pizza and lucoli; artisanship ;-). While we were dining, chef was there to not only check on us, but share some of his experiences. We went on an off time so I am not promising you'll have the exact experience we had, but I wouldn't be surprised if you did. The pie itself was incredible and I really think it was the sauce that did it for me. It was incredibly tasty and the color was an orange red most likely from the variety of tomatoes and the fire roasting. I also tried the Red Lentil soup (shows the Middle Eastern, Turkish I believe, heritage of the Chef) and it was very flavorful. Make sure you check this place out and double check days open/closed. The first time I ordered a traditional margarita and he threw on fried eggplant and pesto on a few slices for me to try and it was the best thing I've had. I wish I could give this place a better rating because I always appreciate a restaurant that focuses on technique, fresh ingredients, and so forth. But I couldn't get past the flavor of the tomato sauce. I didn't mind at all the very thin, almost crispy, pizza crust. The mozzarella had a good taste. But the sauce left me cold. With a great pizza, I rarely use any additional herbs or spices, but I found myself shaking the heck out of the red pepper flake and oregano shakers. Unfortunately, this place gets a few other demerits. I sprang for the two-dollar upcharge for roasted garlic. However, not only were they stingy with the garlic, but the garlic they did use was more like the semi-burnt pieces of garlic you often see on a garlic bagel. I don't dislike that, but I was expecting something lusher - the way roasted garlic tastes when it's just come from the oven. Kind of a ripoff. A pizza place I enjoy in Gowanus not only gives you roasted garlic for free for your pizza, they give you a full jar of it and let you add as much you like. And it's delicious. Next (sorry to have to be so negative), no beer or wine to go with the pizza? All they have is soda and iced tea and such. I wish they had warned me of that and suggested I BMOB. But they didn't. Also very weird (if not actually illegal) that a dine-in establishment - even if it has few tables - has no bathroom. Unfathomable. Finally, I guess I would have liked it better if the vibe there had been warmer, more welcoming. After all, they do charge a premium price. But the young guy who took my order, prepared and served my food, and rang me up did everything in a perfunctory fashion. I get that he might be passionate about the pizza. If he could exhibit that same passion for serving paying customers, it would improve the entire experience. Perhaps this business is young enough that it is still working out some of the kinks. Given how much effort they've put into the pizza recipe and the ovens, I hope they succeed. But until I hear from others that the taste of the sauce has radically improved, this remains really a 2.5 star review. read more

So when I ordered broccoli on my sausage pizza and this showed up, I thought this must to be a mistake so I emailed them but got bounced back twice with that frustrating "mailer daemon unable to deliver your message" crap so I was like ugh... drag ...now I gotta call. On the phone when I explained my broccoli was literally charred to cinders, their reply was that's how we serve it. I said no this is really really burnt but they insisted that's how they roll, that's that...and brushed me off. I was dumbfounded. Unique. That's the first thing to note about the place. So don't go in thinking that it's going to be anything like a normal pizza place. From the bespoke oven (that a friend of mine built) to their unique rustic take on all their food creations, everything is one of a kind. The food is very flavourful & you can watch them make it right in front of you from start to finish. My only complaints for this place are that their prices are SUPER high for the amount of food that you get. You could easily pay $15 for what amounts to a single slice of pizza at a normal pizza place. Their crust is always extra crispy & bordering on burnt, mainly due to the small quantity of sauce & toppings used & that they don't use the full piece of dough, you are usually left with a 1.5"-2" crust around the edge. The owner of this place is so friendly and sweet! I saw him teaching an employee how to make a Lucoli (you get to see EVERYTHING) and it was so amazing to see such passion show through. Found this place on a Sunday afternoon- hesitant to eat Pizza outside of our hometown in Brooklyn but couldn't be more happy that we did! Started with a simple salad, just mixed greens in an incredible homemade dressing- it truly didn't need anything else. We shared a large margarita pizza- it had delicious homemade sauce and despite being a deliciously thin crust, it held up perfectly to the weight of the toppings. The pizza here is amazing & unlike any I've had before. It's clear everything is made in-house & is fresh. With such fantastic ingredients & artisan preparation, the food doesn't need to be "fancy" to be unbelievably delicious. We tried the plain pizza and a spinach/red onion Lucoli -- which is a signature item that comes in many varieties & is more a calzone or stuffed pizza. The crust on both was light, crisp, chewy, & what I imagine must be authentic Italian (*not* your basic Italian-American) crust. The Lucoli was seasoned with an unusual mix of herbs and I suspect that the red onions had been wood fired. The owner is a kind, sweet, & friendly man who built the oven in the restaurant and, in fact, constructs these wood-fired ovens across the country & even abroad. I wish I lived in Red Hook so I could eat here all the time. Some notes: the other posts are accurate: there are no bathrooms here. I have never written a review for a restaurant before but I felt compelled to write one for this awesome spot! I recently discovered Lucoli and absolutely fell in love. It is unlike any other pizza I have ever had and rivals some of the best pizza I've had in NYC. They hand-make their mozzarella and roasted tomato sauce and the ingredients I have had so far have been so fresh and delicious. The pizza crust is thin and crispy and charred to perfection. Their pizza is always cooked perfectly and the food has been consistently good. They also have something called a lucoli which is like a calzone/quesadilla with a thin crust that is crispy and flavorful. My favorite so far has been the plain pizza (sausage in 2nd) and the calzone lucoli with sausage peppers and onions. They even sauté and brown the peppers and onions! So good!
