I woke up this morning dying to write a review for this place. I had really high hopes for Pizza Punks, it feels like the site has been under wraps for a long time with teaser boarding posted over the windows. There's a fairly unmistakable neon sign out front with a big anarchich 'A' symbol. The problem is that this place tries to hard to be hip, they have that exposed brick and white tile decor that was really cool a few years ago. but done to death by a million & 1 copycats, we get it, but no this isn't New York.
The waiting system for a table seemed a little out've step, with walk-ins seated before us, while we waited at the bar. During the week it shouldn't take 45 minutes to get a table, especially when there are tables sitting empty. Despite the long wait, the bar area was fairly easy going & not too crowded a space to sit in.
The main test of any city centre Pizza place is how it compares to Paesano, sadly what was served on our plates fell pretty far short of that standard. Where Paesano's pizzas have a charred, smoky quality to the base, PP's had little, to no taste at all. The tomato sugo lacked any really acidity or flavour you'd associate with San Marzano tomatoes.
I opted for a Pizza, without cheese, opting for olives, red onion & red peppers. On the whole the pizza lacked any real flavour, I tried adding chilli oil, but even it lacked any flavour or heat, only the garlic & herb oil added any flavour to the pizza.
Despite the initial delays, I have to say that the service was pretty swift. The bartender even helped us get a table organised after overhearing our complaints about the wait.
I felt fairly disappointed by my visit to Pizza Punks, but I wouldn't say that I wouldn't give it a second chance.. read more
