We were just walking Central Park and around the area. Found pizza Pete's and decided to give it a try! So far this has been our favorite slice of pizza while in NYC. This place is totally a dive. They literally had 3 or 4 small tables inside and 2 tables outside. They did have a lot of foot traffic for take out. There were a bunch of high school kids hanging out and eating having a good time. Which to me means that the food must be good. So we decided to eat here. We checked out all the pizza that they had to offer. They did offer many different delicious looking pies. I ordered a plain cheese slices, white pizza slice and their buffalo chicken slice. Their buffalo chicken slice which was surprisingly in a very good way delicious. It was a bit spicy which took me off guard with just the right amount of buffalo sauce topped with a lot of breaded chicken. Definitely a slice I would recommend if you like buffalo chicken. Their plain cheese slices was pretty tasty with the right amount of sauce, cheese plus their crust was light and crunchy. Their white pizza to me was a bit bland. Great staff--friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Nice assortment of pizza by the slice, too. Especially fond of their 'meatball' pizza (often called lasagna pizza elsewhere) that has ground meat, ricotta and mozz. Chicken pizza (with cubes of regular breaded chicken or buffalo style) are also a favorite. Even their plain pizza is good. In the unlikely event that they don't have what you want already made and you're willing to wait a bit, they can turn a plain slice into whatever suits your fancy. read more

I'm updating my review of this place. It was a 4 and now I'm giving it a 3. It's definitely still a good place if you want a quick bite and you're in the area; their service is fast & friendly and when their slices are fresh they taste great. But lately their selection hasn't been very fresh. With the exception of maybe one type of pizza at any given moment, everything else looks like it's been sitting out for a long time. I do come a little later in the evening, like around 7 or 8pm sometimes, but, in my opinion, that's not really an excuse. I've never came for lunch, so I cannot speak to that end. read more

But I end up at four stars because the slices -- the remarkably thin, super-crisp, eminently foldable slices -- are positively textbook and easily in the upper echelon of old-school NY slices. That's according to the experts (my 6.5 year old and 39 year old boys), who now measure every other pie they try against the Pizza Pete's standard, including our old, NYC-style West Village favorites like John's Pizzeria, Joe's Pizza and Bleecker St. We like that the ingredients are low brow. There's a time and place for fancy pizza with Buffalo mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, Caputo flour, bresaola, etc., etc., etc.... And then there's a time and place for Pizza Pete's. It's like how you need both quinoa and fried Oreos in your life. (You do.) The folks here are gruff, but kind. Yes, the place has a slightly grungy / sticky feel if you choose to eat in. But delivery is fast, friendly and delicious if you'd rather eat out. I'm proud to say we are still alive and kicking after eating several hundred of these pies. Low and behold, I open my trusty Yelp app and Pizza Pete's popped up as the highest rated spot in the area. Located on Columbus Ave between 85th and 86th is where you'll find this small pizzeria. Looking at this place from the outside, it looks pretty much like a hole in the wall pizza joint. The decor is close to non-existent, and there are a couple tables scattered here and there. Nonetheless, it can't hurt to try right? As far as their pizza goes, I did like the fact that their slices weren't overly salty. The pizza crust and sauce weren't very memorable, as I don't remember how tasty they were, but it wasn't horrible enough for me to remember that fact either. Price-wise, a plain slice costs $2.75, and a one topping will run you $3.50. I ended up opting for a plain slice and a Hawaiian. The best part? Buy 2 slices get a free soda. If you do decide to dine here, there is a TV that usually has ESPN going on. Pizza Pete's. Not a bad spot if you're around the block. I could see myself eating here from time to time if I were to live close by. However I wouldn't be traveling here to eat from downtown Manhattan. read more
