I could vouch for Freddie and Pepper's being the best pizza in New York City. Every time I visit I am more than happy with my experience. The way that the cheese sits on the pizza and the way that it's cooked creates the perfect texture. I also LOVE the way that the crust isn't too burnt and the bottom and the sauce tastes really good. I'm craving their cheese slices right now as I speak. I also notice that whenever I order a mushroom/olive slice that they have always given me fresh mushrooms and not that stuff from a can. Yes, there is a difference, and it is superior. I also love the guys who work at the restaurant and every time I come I admire the thank you letter written to the restaurant from a fellow alumni from the Stephen Gaynor School back when it was on 74th street. Heading to a movie nearby, so checked out Freddie & Pepper's, a narrow pizzeria for slices you need to step down to. There's limited seating with one cafe table out front. Ordered a plain cheese slice, but had wanted a second slice of Chicken Mole, one food I really like that I've never seen on pizza. Unfortunately, they only have Chicken Mole on certain days, and not on Sunday... so I chose mushroom instead. The crust on both slices were chewy, slightly thicker and not really crispy like classic 5-star New York slices. While flavors, on the whole was not as strong as elsewhere. If you're from out-of-town, it's probably more in line with a slice you'll find wherever you come from. We stopped here on the way to Penn station. It's well located to be able to grab a slice on the go and sit in the park nearby, which we did. As you can see from the photo, the pineapple pizza was very heavy on the cheese, though the crust was perfect. The pepperoni slice had more crackery crust. read more

Had 2 slices so I could taste one with red sauce and one white pie slice. The red one was a plain slice loaded with sauce and cheese and I needed two hands to lift it, fold it and shove it in my mouth. Very saucy and cheesy with a good crispy crust. That's exactly how I want my pizza. Very flavorful and a good sauce to cheese ratio. The white pie was broccoli, zucchini and ricotta cheese with whole wheat dough. The toppings were about 1 inch thick and had a bit of a heft to it when I lifted it. Crispy crust and really enjoyed that one too and was well seasoned. They also have a lot of other pies with very interesting toppings, for the more adventurous people, like chicken ranch or one with bacon and cheese and some spicy ones. Go for it! Four slices and two bottled sodas, came out to about 30 bucks for big slices. The staff were busy, but at least able to tell me what each pizza had in it. The atmosphere is typical New York and you have to come down a few stairs to come in to a small little seating area. There is about two tables and four chairs outside. This pizza place is definitely not a romantic, scenic spot - it is very basic and gets right down to business, which I appreciate. The sauce had a delicious basil flavor, the cheese held its own, and the crust was thin and crispy. I wasn't expecting to be amazed by a slice of cheese pizza, so it was such a treat that night! They had a few different options available and I chose a pepperoni and a Buffalo chicken. The guy was gruff but not unpleasant as he heated up my slices. Ultimately this is certainly not the best pizza in nyc but it's a respectable slice. Would I go back? Probably not, maybe if I found myself right there and hungry. If you want some good NYC pizza come here. It may look like a hole in the wall but the pizza is great. Staff is super friendly & it seemed like they have some regulars that come in often. There is a wide variety of slices available or order a whole pie. I had the fresh mozzarella one & a pepperoni slice. They were not greasy & tasted fresh. They will heat them up in the oven for you. Drinks are bottled. There are only about 4/5 tables so you may not get seating here. Might be a great place to get pizza to go or eat it outside when it is nice out. read more
