When we walked in I was disappointed because I thought the first floor was all there was but then I saw the staircase. Went upstairs and saw the rest of the place. I was impressed. It was clean and the staff was nice. We sat down and ordered our food. While we waited we played Mario Kart on Nintendo 64. So fun! The food came relatively quickly. Everything tasted good but was a bit in the saltier side than we would have liked. We had fun playing pinball afterwards. I wish the Simpsons game would have been working. What a great place this is for Gen-Xers trying to relive their childhood days and maybe for a few hours, forget about their weighty mortgage, rising inflation and that incompetent, nagging boss, who no one knows how they got the job, thinks he can do your job but in reality has no idea and who nobody in the office likes but he thinks everyone loves. The food is good. The staff is very friendly. But I didn't come here for that. I came for the main attraction. 80's video games. The only reason I would drive from the safe, secure suburbs of Virginia Beach to Norfolk where the parking is a challenge and the hipsters are aplenty. The video games were great. I was instantly transported back to 1986, Friday night, 11:30, past curfew, 7-11 on S Independence, playing 1942 for hours with my brother and friends. Did we buy anything? Absolutely not unless you count the endless quarters we poured into that wonderful game. Overall, the experience was great. Good selection of games. I wish they had an original Space Invaders and Zaxon but besides that, they had most of the classics. PAC Man, Donkey Kong, Joust, Asteroids, Centipede, Frogger and more. Special recognition for having Tempest. Last time I remember seeing that game was probably 1983 at Castle Park in Hawaii. So if you're a Gen-Xer, looking to recall a simpler, more innocent time of your life when an afternoon at a arcade was pretty much what you imagined Heaven to be, hit up Pixels. In town for a volleyball tournament so looked for a place to fit and feed a lot of picky teenagers. Enter Pixels which had a great menu that applied to everyone and had a ton of great games to keep the group well entertained for hours. I enjoyed spending time with friends at this hangout spot. You can both play games and eat/drink and it is all inspired by the past. The food was average so it's not necessarily something that I would return for. However, the games were great with classics like The Ninja Turtles, PacMan Battle Royal, Pinball, and many others. There are a couple of change machines that accept 1, 5, 10, and 20 dollar bills that give you gold coin(equivalent to a quarter). You can even sit at the bar and play system games if you like. Finally!! The Hampton roads area now has a 'barcade' (Bar+ Arcade)! I love hoping to barcade so it's great to have one nearby. It's a very creative, fun concept. Old school video games and drinks? How fun does that sound?! Seeing all the old school video games around the place was very nostalgic! I grew up obsessed with video games so it's very amusing to play them all again. The place is fairly big, consisting of 2 stories. Video games and tables on both floors. I came on a Monday night which wasn't busy. My group decided to order some food prior to checking out the games. I did order a Sex on the Beach, which was amazing! Highly recommend it! Although I didn't try the food, everyone raved about how good it was. The portions was fairly large too. In order to play the games, you must buy tokens. I didn't find it to be expensive. Most of the games take one token with pinball and air hockey being exceptions. I will say the amount of games overall was a bit disappointing. Compared to other barcades, they didn't have a whole lot. On the bright side, they did have a diverse selection. Regardless, it was still very fun playing the different games available. This is a review for people that have been to multiple barcades! If this is your first time going for one, I would not recommend this review, but you may read if you choose to do so. :) I will cover mainly food/alcohol, customer service, and arcade/token system. As for the food, it's probably pretty average. Definitely not worth the price point and tastes are mediocre, but I guess if you meet up with friends but you're the only one that hasn't eaten, the food will do the job. However, if you're looking to go out to eat and enjoy games, I suggest eating out before heading to this place. The alcohol is okay priced but I gotta admit the mixed drinks are pretty good! Employees are always super nice! The bar downstairs AND the one upstairs. A+ for customer service! However, the system upstairs makes it seem..cluttered? The waiters/waitress definitely seem stressed from their jobs since they have to handle more than being the wait staff. They seem to also be the bartender while also tending to those that want tokens using their card, which brings me to my next point. The arcade portion of the place! For those that love barcades, this is the part of the review that I want most of you to see! I'm not sure if they've fixed this yet, but the whole system is archaic! There's only one (there may be more, but I only know of one) machine that generates tokens and it only takes cash! The waitress told us that it only took $1 bills, but turned out it took $5 as well. It's 2019, it'd be nice if we could get tokens without having to wait for an employee. Especially on busy nights, the only way it seems to be able to get ahold of one would be if your party had a table that had a tab still open that you could just stack your token costs on. It got tiring and deterred me from getting more tokens. Did I mention a good number of the arcade games eat your tokens? Also, there's only one of each arcade game, so the more popular ones seem to be out of reach since there seems to always be such a line if you go at a busy time. I guess a bright side is that it gives you reason to try the less popular ones, if they don't eat your tokens. They just opened, so there's definitely room for improvement. I'll probably come back in the future to see how much they've improved. If you've never been to a barcade before this might be a blast for you! But if you've been to a few, this'll definitely fill the void of not going to one, but it won't wow you either. read more

What a fun little place! I've had my eye on it for a while, and it is exactly what I was hoping it would be. Fun, old-school style arcade games combined with a bar that serves creative and tasty drinks. What's not to love? My issue with barcades: you have to buy tokens, which are a quarter each, so if you're a gamer it's a lot cheaper to invest in a home consol or PC, and like any bar drinks are more expensive than if you just make them yourself. There's a strong nostalgia factor here, which can sometimes feel exploitative. Having said that, this particular barcade is one of the better ones I've been to. My issue is with the business model itself, which maybe can't be helped. As long as you're okay with that, I'd definitely recommend this place, at least to check out. Disappointed in the rude service from one of the bartenders. We called earlier to see if we could bring a cake and they said absolutely so we set up a surprise event here. Came here for his 28th birthday, they rejected his legal ID (which he never had a problem with before in his 5 years living here) saying it was a fake because the mailing address was different than the state. He had it changed when he renewed it online so he could have it mailed to Virginia. Gave him a hard time, cursed out our other friend when we asked nicely why they wouldn't accept the second photo ID of his passport which we had on his phone to verify the same driver's license name and birth date. Understand they were trying to do their job, however the rudeness was unacceptable and they could've handled this situation much better given that the passport we provided had the same name and birthday and photo as the license. read more

Absolutely love this place. Went for the first time on May 11th and fell in love. Loved all the games and I totally think it was worth the price. A ton of different arcade games to choose from. I did not eat there because I was so overwhelmed with playing but the food did look good. I was a little lost when I walked in and no one really came to greet me but we definitely realized it was just one of those places you kind of just do your own thing at. Worth visiting but nothing to rave about. A somewhat decent game selection but way too many kids running around. Food and drinks are okay but order carefully. Children should not be running around in a bar, even if it is a barcade. Although this bar has an age 18+ policy (which becomes 21+ after 9pm) they still allow children inside (18+ means nothing when you let kids in if they're accompanied - all little kids are accompanied). That's their official policy. I understand that this is Norfolk and they need business, but children should not be allowed inside at any hours on weekends and Friday nights. It's not as if they can't afford it - the place gets extremely packed on the weekend. A barcade isn't a place for a kid's birthday party (I came here at 8pm on a Saturday to this). They have a decent game selection. Although they have some hits such as Mortal Kombat, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Pac-Man, expect to wait in line for the good games. Mainly because there aren't that many of them. No shooters - I would love to see Time Crisis - and not nearly enough hits (recommending Michael Jackson Moonwalker or the Star Wars Atari game). They have five pinball machines though which is a plus (check out the Aerosmith machine). Unfortunately, the games use tokens rather than quarters. They have a decent drinks selection. I would like it if they had more canned beers, but that's really not a big deal. Order food carefully. Some of the food is good but a lot of it is mediocre at best. Get the burger with tater tots. The fried bologna sandwich with pimento cheese and pork rinds is also tasty. If you don't want to get tots as your side, the GTFHO is a good appetizer as tots with chili go perfect together; although, I don't understand why you have to choose between chili and black beans. Avoid their pork Philly cheesesteak - it's bland, completely unseasoned, and so dry that it's unpleasant to eat. The brussels sprouts and sweet potato salad are also terrible. The place gets extremely crowded on Friday nights and weekends. The staff is friendly and polite. Less than a day after I posted this review, the owner sent me a long and somewhat passive aggressive message asking me to edit this post because he thought it implied that they're breaking the law (it didn't). He further explained that they do not consider themselves a "typical barcade" but rather have styled themselves as a restaurant with a bar and an "arcade atmosphere" in order to circumvent state and local bar regulations. Glad you're reading this. Whatever you want to call yourselves, you are a barcade. Not the best barcade but hey it's a barcade in Norfolk. read more

My experience at this place is excellent!! Gamers in 80's will appreciate their arcade games more than any age population. I don't see a lot of younger generation of gamers appreciating these type of games since most games are classic and very pixelated (hence the name of the place). Most young gamers are spoiled with HD realistic, smooth graphics and more complex games. Though they may have video game challenge nights that involves newer games. Other than Arcades, they have pinballs and air hockey. Their cocktail drinks and especially their food tastes amazing!!! Their food are not over priced and their servings are very generous. All the food we ate was worth the money. Drink: Cat call: was really good, sweet chocolate dessert like alcohol. I would order again. Appetizer: Belly of the Beast, huge bocks chunks of tasty pork belly covered in crispy panko breading. It's very good but as a reminder for those don't normally eat pork belly slices, some slices may have blob of pork fat hence it's supposed to be fatty. Ricky Bob: At first I received my chicken pinkish, juicy, and kinda shiny wet looking, but no oozy blood. It was soft and juicy. I brought to the server's attention that I wanted it cooked a bit more. He brought it to the kitchen came back to explain to me that it is a dark meat and even if it looked pinkish it is cooked as long as the meat reached certain temperature. I am very well aware of that concept but I do not eat pink meat chicken. All was taken care off, aside from that Ricky Bob was flavo, I don't normally eat chicken but this one I really enjoyed the taste. Burger Time: Huge burger and it was very good as well. Generous portions of sides. I recommend this place to people that are classic nerds who loved to play old arcades like Ninja Turtles, X-men, Galaxia, Froggers, Dig-Dug, Pacman, Cubix, Street Fighter, etc. and are looking for good food, good buzz and good time. Overall a 3.5 for me. I'm basing it on other barcades I've been to on the east coast and midwest, although as an individual establishment it's really not bad, definitely make your way there for some awesome games and drinks. The food was average for me; the menu is innovative and thought out, but I wasn't inspired by the flavor. If you're vegan they have options for you, and I think that's pretty cool. My tofu fries i felt would be better if they were perhaps cut thinner. At it's thickness, the center is bland and you have to rely on the sesame in the breading for flavor. It comes with a fig sauce which is tasty (resembles a bbq sauce) but I still felt that I wish the breading itself had more different seasonings. We tried the meatloaf corn dog out of curiosity, and it was pretty good. Comfort food on a stick. Mine broke apart a little, but I still ate each bit off the plate. Soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Then we had the burger with the mac and cheese on it. It was filling. The portion and price ratio for everything is good I'd say. A good selection of alcohol to choose from. They have some awesome old school games, from pin ball machines to button mashers to prize games. They're located upstairs and downstairs, so they're nice and spread out so that it doesn't crowd too bad. If you dont have cash, you can ask the staff to charge your card (we had an order, I'm not sure if you can do it without one) and they'll bring coins out to you. I felt like some of the machines were a little pricey, particularly for pinball. I know that it's just 3 coins, but when you play a lot it adds up, and majority of other barcades do one coin. I came here on the recommendation of a friend. It was happy hour on a weekday evening, so still pretty quiet for the joint. My husband and I were promptly greeted by the bartender, and given a quick overview of how things worked. The fun part is, there are free childhood faves (Nintendo, SNES, Sega Genesis) that are available to play while sitting at the bar. As we explored the rest of the games, I found most of them to be very similar to one another (in concept) and not as many arcade games as I had expected. They did have skeeball, which was fun and where we spent most of our time.. However the mechanics were a little wonky and it didn't get our scores right most of the time. Also played A little air hockey, and a game of pong that takes some getting used to. If you like games like mortal combat and Pacman, this place is definitely for you. Each play is usually the equivalent to 25 cents (you have to exchange money for tokens with the bartender or use the dreadful change machine) but there are some that are 50c - $1 per play. I don't think the $1 plays are worth it. For happy hour, I had A blood orange gose since they were out of the passion fruit gose, which I'm not complaining about. Also tried their loaded tater tots and that was delicious. I think that was one of the best parts of my visit, aside from the good service we received from the bartender. Came with friends for food beer and games. The game part of the evening was awesome. I tried all of the pinball games played every level of game from Atari up. The drinks came and went easy. But the food, was..... well I didn't come just for the food. The chicken and waffles was to salty to finish. The short and sloppy was good and the philly was average but tasty. Pixels is SO FUN. I personally love pinball and there is a large assortment of pinball machines, including an Elvira one (as of today) that I played as a kid. There was also a great assortment of other arcade games you could play as single player and multi player. I personally love the multiple rooms and the nostalgia/80s decor. My husband and I had so much fun and the tokens were very reasonable-- we had $15 worth of tokens and it took us awhile to work out way through it. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. The food is pretty interesting to say the least. Imagine home cooked meal with some creation from a stoner. It's not bad, but it's interesting. I would like a mixture of normal meals and eccentric meals. The service is helpful and engaging. No complains with wait times or rude staff. They were very helpful and quick turnaround for food and drinks. The atmosphere is pretty awesome. I really enjoy the games are about 25 cents. You must exchange coins or dollars for their custom tokens- which is insanely smart from a business standpoint. They will also allow you to put tokens on your credit card which is very useful and refreshing. The price isn't too bad and the games are cheap. I do wish they had a better drink prices. Such a cool place to relax and enjoy some time with friends. Our waitress Lexi was the sweetest and most awesomest person ever! She made sure we got what we needed and we had a blast! My husband and I came here on February 12th. It had been a couple years since we were here. We had a great time. Between tokens and cocktails, spent about $80.00. This seemed reasonable for a fun afternoon of old school pinball and drinks. Well, we returned again yesterday (from vb), and they were closed. Ok, stuff happens. So, we drove out again today. Token machines were down, so, got $10.00 worth from bartender and a couple drinks. They were incredibly understaffed. Waited along time for the poor bartender, got a couple more drinks and wanted more tokens and they had none! We were told a manager would be there in 20 or 30 minutes and could get more tokens. Really? They had been open for a couple hours. Surely someone anticipated this problem. So, we left. Also, the unruly kids in this place made the experience really unpleasant. We might have sat and enjoyed our drinks and waited for more tokens if we hadn't felt like we were at chucky cheese. I guess it is too much to expect that a bar with video games would not become a venue that parents could go and drink and ignore their kids. After a lot of they hype from my friends and coworkers, I finally visited and this place lives up to the hype. It was surprisingly not busy around 5 when we got there. The place is seat yourself. They have a good mix of craft beers, ciders and geek themed drinks. Their food was the big surprise, I had low expectations for the food considering I thought of it as an arcade, however, the food was very good. I got the smash-burger, which was cooked perfectly and and had way more bacon than I expected. They even had something for my vegetarian friend who had a tofu sandwich. The burger left more to be desired, you couldn't even see the beef patty it was so small, it was mostly bun. The ranch doesn't taste like ranch, more like a garlic tzatziki sauce. The south philly sandwich was good, that sharp provolone was perfect, but again the bun was too big for the ratio of meat. There were no draft beer prices listed which makes it a surprise on your tab which I was not a fan of. It was nice that you could just buy tokens on your tab. Most games were only 1 token.
