Expectations are high for these places due to my past experience with BBQ competitions. That said ... I hit this place right after the lunch rush so I expected them to be out of some items and still trying to recover. Nope..they still were running full steam. Everything was back to normal and had a cool vibe to the place. They use full briskets and smoke them with the point on, great bark, good smoke ring, just pulled apart effortlessly, had onions and pickles, Cole slaw was fresh, moist, and had great flavor. Sausage was fantastic, pulled pork also on point. Baked beans had a good base flavor but not too much, I also like to throw some pork and sauce in it so it perfect for me. But the standout things about this place was the 3 meat plate was 22 BUCKS! Look at that pic! Portions were fantastic! Holy hell two people could have really shared that. They had an amazing selection of sauces. Places always say they have a spicy sauce, (and I love super hot food) but their Afterburner sauce had some legit zap. The other sauces were really just as good, - you're gonna want the "Best of both worlds". I make a ton of sauces and have entered several of my sauces into competitions, and I bought 3 pints... so it's legit. It's Veteran owned, owners are super cool. If I had to give them a negative mark on something would be the Pepsi, but I've ran restaurants and I do understand how much coke can be a pain to deal with, but easy to forget when you have a pile of brisket in front of you. Can't say enough good stuff about this place, I will be coming back to Knoxville just for this place, guaranteed... I ordered the two meat plate at the counter with smoked bologna and smoked chicken. My sides were mac and hush puppies and I had tea to drink. Food arrived quickly. The chicken is served sliced (which was a first for me) and it was nice and moist. The bologna had a nice light smoke flavor. The mac was THICK. In a good way. The hush puppies were good, just a little less sweet than I prefer. Tea was on point. This spot is less than 10 minutes from TYS and is absolutely worth a stop on your way too or from the airport.

Some very mid places get good reviews as a result. I had some decent barbecue in the Nashville area, before heading east. On the way to the smokies we saw this spot south of Knoxville and decided to give it a shot. It was a good decision. Very good barbecue and sides at fair prices. I had the pulled pork, and got the sausage as one of my sides. Both were excellent, but the sausage was special. Good smoke flavor, very tender and juicy. The pork was great on its own, and I had half of it in a sandwich which was just as good. I barely touched the sauces here. The barbecue was great as is. My wife had the brisket salad and it was a meal. I'd make a point of going here if I was in the area again. Good folks making real bbq. Hard to beat that.

We were impressed they had 4.9 stars on both Yelp and Google and we had to see what it was all about. We arrived a little before 11:30am on a Saturday. The building and parking area are pretty unassuming but they do have adequate signage at the street and on the front of the building. We knew they had just opened at 11am and there were already people leaving with take-out containers. We parked and walked inside. The inside is simple but tastefully decorated and looked very clean. The order counter is on the right as you enter and there is seating for about 30 people to the left. They also have outdoor seating for approximately another 30 people at outdoor picnic tables. The woman working the counter was incredibly kind and welcoming--an outstanding example of great customer service! She explained everything to us and answered our questions. She also pointed out her husband in the kitchen as well as a young man working along side him...maybe the next generation of family? Smokey Q offers a veteran and first responder discount and my wife asked if they are a veteran owned business. She mentioned they initially had another partner who is also a veteran but she and her husband recently bought the business. She said they appreciate and support veterans and first responders, which we always love to hear. My wife wanted to try the sampler platter for one so we could taste all of the offerings. The sampler platter can be purchased for one or two people and includes all five of their meats and all six sides, yum! I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with a side of mac and cheese. We asked for fountain water to drink and were provided ice and water filled to-go cups with lids. They also offer bottled water and assorted canned soda along with fresh lemonade and tea. They also have small quantities of meat, pickles, banana pudding, etc. We sat down at one of the tables and grabbed some plastic silverware, BBQ sauce and napkins from the condiment table and waited patiently. We also overheard a customer mention that Smokey Q began as a local food truck. Our food arrived in a timely manner and looked delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed each and every bite and also really enjoyed their bbq sauces. We ate all we could and packed up our leftovers. We also signed the flag on the wall before leaving. We also learned from the owners, the small town of Dandridge, TN was having their annual June Jubilee celebration a couple of miles down the road so we checked that out afterwards. Overall this was a great experience and we would recommend to anyone in the area wanting some delicious BBQ. Very friendly, very clean, and a great selection of delicious sides. They also have swag that is very reasonably priced. Our only suggestion is it would be nice to offer real silverware to those people dining in, otherwise this was a perfect experience! Looking forward to stopping in again when traveling through Eastern Tennessee. We should also mention it is just a couple of miles off I-40 and well worth the stop.
