For an instant as we entered we thought we were experiencing the scene from Bob Seger's song Turn the Page. We looked at everyone and they looked at us. Like many lounges, they have a high % of local clientele and we clearly were not that. Nevertheless the friendly guy behind the bar welcomed and joked with us as we ordered our food and drinks. The overall place looked spotless and fresh unlike some places that have sticky tables and smell like stale beer. Below is the breakdown: Wings - amongst the largest I have ever seen. They came breaded with Buffalo sauce on the side. They were juicy and delicious even without the sauce. I asked for "hot" and the sauce was Franks straight up which is just right for me. Apparently they offer four Buffalo heat flavors and over a dozen other sauces. Burger - a 1/4 or 1/3 pound burger with standard toppings. Breaded Calamari strips - first time I have encountered Calamari that looked like a fish stick. They were tender and good. Frys - these were amazing. Everyone does frys and it is hard to get excited but these were fantastic. Crisp and medium sized they came out hot and fresh. We think the kitchen is related and shared by the chicken place next door. The service was just right and the gal working the table was super nice and helpful. Prices were more than fair. As we left we said goodbye to a now fully occupied bar and had several farewells come our way. Overall a great place run by great folks.

I ordered a Corpse Reviver #2 and my husband went with a Paper Plane--both cocktails were absolutely delicious and well-balanced. The menu was a bit unexpected for such a stylish lounge, leaning heavily on fried comfort food. We tried the cheese curds and the charcuterie board, and both were surprisingly good. Service was a bit uneven. The bartender, while very chatty with locals, didn't acknowledge us at all--which made it clear we weren't part of the regular crowd. Thankfully, the waitress was friendly and attentive, even though we were seated at the bar. She's the one who took our orders and made us feel welcome. Overall, it was a pretty good experience--especially if you're from around here or don't mind a little local-clique energy.

My family and I are on a road trip and opted to stay the night in Susanville. We arrived around…read moremidday and once we'd gotten our hotel room sorted, we realized that after hours on the road eating gas station snacks, we were pretty hungry for a real meal. It's New Years Day 2026 and we assumed that most non-chain-brand places in a small town like this would be closed, but we gave Side Iron BBQ a call and were pleasantly surprised to find that they were open. Upon entering the place, we immediately knew we'd made a good choice. Side Iron is located inside the Pioneer Building and is dripping with legit old-school frontier ambiance combined with touches of classic Americana. There's an antique piano and fully-functional vintage pinball machine in the entryway, and as you pass into the main dining tall you'll find a full-scale pool table, a shelf of classic board games, a foosball game, and even some well-maintained acoustic guitars placed around, all of which invite visitors to not just scarf down a meal, but to hang out and have a great time. I've had the good fortune to eat BBQ in Texas numerous times and it has basically ruined California BBQ for me - certainly nothing I've had in the Bay Area can really compete with what I've had in Texas. Despite that, I had a good feeling about Side Iron so we went ahead and ordered a variety of items - brisket, pulled pork, a sausage link, fried okra, mac and cheese, jalapeno bacon corn, and even a burger. I'm delighted to report that this was hands-down the best BBQ I've ever had in California, and is right up there with the best BBQ I've ever eaten, period. The smoked brisket in particular was a real standout: tender, juicy, and with delightfully crispy burned edges. I seriously cannot overstate how good everything was. If Side Iron was located within 50 miles of San Francisco, there would've been a line of "food influencers" three blocks long and we would've paid 2-3X as much for this meal. The fact that we were the only patrons on New Years Day and enjoyed this incredible feast for a fraction of the price we would've paid closer to home is genuinely incredible. If you like BBQ and you're EVER anywhere near Susanville, you absolutely cannot miss the chance to try Side Iron!

There is certainly chicken so if you are hungry or want some pretty good bar food with drinks, there is that, be sure you have your cab money though, its easy to get swept away, its a lot of fun. The staff in general are quite good too. For the part of town you find Chicken N Cheers in I think they do a VERY GOOD job at conducting the overall atmosphere. They aren't there to be baby sitters, they are there to create an atmosphere that people would like to hang out in and they accomplish that in spades; I think that is the sign of a GOOD bar. Having been to many of the bars in town, Chicken N Cheers does it right. I have gone around 5 times now and every time I enjoyed myself. The crowd is generally on the younger side and are sociable. And that is GOOD. I understand that some have maybe judged them a bit too rowdy, but I'd say to those folks the establishment does do a GOOD job at threading that needle, you know "boys will be boys" and to be realistic with those sorts of expectations. Chicken N Cheers lives up to its name, practice your song at home, then bring it by and hand it off to Weezy, please, know your limit, and don't blame them for not being mind readers. 5 Stars.
