Double cheeseburger extra cheese with fries and a corn dog
Fidel S.

Pass through Alturas and and wanted to grab something to eat. There was not many choices to pick from small town with not that many options of restaurants. I ended choosing Harolds Frosty as it looked like the best choice in town. Burger was actually better than I expected to be it was actually pretty good. Also order a side of fries and a corn dog they were ok. I really liked the service very friendly and restaurant is really clean inside that was a plus.

Great food, one man cooking and everything was delicious. Fries, burgers, onion rings, milkshakes.

Cheeseburger - delish

Alturas was a half-way point for us on our road trip - and we wanted to stretch our legs and get something for lunch. We popped into Harold's Frosty because of all the cars we saw outside - figuring it must be good. And we were not disappointed. We had to wait a little bit for our food, but only because there was a line ahead of us and they cook up burgers, fresh with each order. They were so busy (hey it was Labor Day) that they actually ran out of regular fries and ice cream. So we ordered up their cheeseburger and onion rings - which were delicious. The cheeseburger was seasoned perfectly and the onion rings were soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Just perfect!

WOW! Great find in Alturas, CA. This is a retro looking shake and hamburger place on the north end of town on the Main Street. The food is not cheap but worth every penny. We got a large fry to share which is made from fresh local potatoes. A veggie burger for the wife :) and a proper double cheeseburger for me. I highly recommend a throw back lunch or dinner on your way through.

Miguel, Michael, and Marlena were excellent hosts and provided superior service.

Miguel and his crew fed our group of 25 students, 5 chaperones, and 2 teachers. We ordered ahead and we were pleasantly surprised to find that they closed the restaurant to assure we would all have seats. The burgers were delicious, the fries were fresh, crisp, and hot. Milkshakes were all cold and delicious. All-in-all this place deserves a 5 star rating!

Harold's Frosty in bustling downtown Alturas!

To a 53 year old "teenager," there are few meals that are as palate pleasing as a great old fashioned cheeseburger, french fries and chocolate malt. So, when we first traveled through Alturas in May of this year, we immediately looked for "Mickey D's" to get a quick lunch. But, there AREN'T any McD's in Alturas, and it took only one stop at Harold's Frosty to know why. Located on Main Street, across the street from the local High School, Harold's exemplifies that bastion of All American food art ... The Mom & Pop burger stand! This vanishing breed has survived in robust numbers in the rustic towns of Northern California, and feature crowds of patrons who come for more than just a quick meal. For the hard working rural residents, these stands are where farmers, miners, kids & parents meet to eat. They are as much social gathering places as anything else, and hard to classify as "fast food." They are simply best enjoyed in a leisurely fashion, and don't be surprised if the other patrons actually TALK TO YOU! Scrupulously clean, the small staff turns out tons of great burgers, sandwiches, ice cream, shakes, coffee drinks and much more, but the biggest reason we go back time after time are the french fries. These are simply THE WORLD'S BEST FRIES! Cut fresh from the regions best potatoes, then fried to order at your command, they arrive hot and stay hot. These fries are long, skinny, salty and when served with the proper amount of ketchup, MESSY! };)'''''' And they STAY delicious as they cool down, unlike most other fast food fries. They aren't coated, sweetened or adulterated in any way. If you CAN'T have them with salt, you'd better tell them beforehand. If you can, DO! The burger combo isn't the usual fast food, slapped together stuff. Each one is carefully constructed, and if it's not right or you end up another patrons burger (Hey, they're busy!) they'll happily make it again! The shakes and malts are (*BURP!*) delectable & delicious, with fresh local fruit of the season proudly featured for your enjoyment. (GREAT fresh Peach shake on the 4th of July!) The staff is personable, and as they get to know you, even playful. As the fry chef got used to serving my burger with "more onions," he showed he truly understood by serving up a whole onion on the side! And a lovely red Bermuda onion, at that! };) For those "atmosphere" nuts, Harold's has the vintage celebrity photos festooned about the walls (Even Gandhi loved Harold's burgers ... Who knew?) and lots of shiny tile. So, whether you're just passing through Alturas or staying awhile, you'll always get a great burger combo at Harold's Frosty!

Burgers, fries and chicken strips!

I've lived in Alturas for most of my life and Harold's Frosty is a fixture here. The place hasn't changed or evolved much from the mid 90s but that's not exactly a bad thing considering this is a retro style burger joint. Let me start with the good. The burgers, chicken strips, fries and onion rings are the best in town. They're always bursting with flavor and perfectly composed. The fries are crispy and amazing as are the onion rings. The staff and owner are super friendly and always make you feel welcome. The first problem is that they use bread and butter pickles instead of the standard dill ones. It's very off-putting and unexpected. Bread and butter pickles have no business being anywhere near a hamburger. Secondly the prices are pretty steep. A standard meal for two will often cost $30+. Overall though I would recommend checking it out.

Here on a business trip and this place is awesome! So happy we gave it a try. We ate dinner here twice. Cheeseburger - juicy and flavorful beef patty; veggies on it were fresh; pickles were so crunchy with the perfect touch of sweetness and tartness Onion rings - yummy especially with their ranch dip Chicken strips - tasty batter and real chicken breast meat Fries - heavenly!!! I eat a lot of fries and this place has one of the best!!! Customer service - nice people and food came fast and hot

As we needed a break from the monotony and The Oney Frosty in Town was open, we stopped in for some delicious soft serve. This is a down home friendly place where I'm sure that if you live within 20 miles, everyone knows your name. The free reading material on one table reflects the area ranch culture and we caught one conversation about someone that had just come home after a long time away. You can also buy a locally-appropriate coffee cup for your troubles as well. The chalkboard menu above the counter is heavily weighted towards their broad burger choices. The soft serve choices are on the far right, with the shake flavors on a separate board. Gayle ordered a "small" swirl cone, while I ordered a "small" cherry shake. Both were delicious and more than we thought we were ordering. We sat outside, enjoyed some light conversation, and too soon enough we were back on the road. We really hope that we'll pass this way again.

Breakfast choices in Alturas are few. I mean a hearty, half day full breakfast good for four hour…read moredrive. Several coffee and pastry spots. I looked over the enticing offers at Hotel Niles. I recommend it to coffe and padtry people ever where I have spent some time around auction yards. Yelp writers reciommend the cafe. So we went. Present owners, mother and daughter have run the place 45 years. It is a community center. 45 years ago I had moved from temporary wildland firefighting to a permanent job. This community Center with meals has been through a lot in that time. Each of us had an coffee, an egg, slice of french toast without powdered sugar, ham cut from a real ham, not the wide variety of ham products offered by food service suppliers. Restroom is gender-neutral. Just off the dining room. Lots of community support photos on the walls and the Alturas famous Hereford spices holders on each table. We enjoyed ourselves, appreciate the kindness and service of valley locals. Thank you. We will eat here again on our return.

We went on a pretty busy day…read more However, the place had cleared out a lot while we were there. My omelette had egg shells in it,,too much sour cream which was just not ok, and the eggs hadn't been whisked (much?). The hills and whites were obviously not blended. Next, it wasn't very tasty. Smelled like seafood-- which wasn't in it. The mushrooms were old. Being a chef myself, I recognize old mushrooms, when they've been cooked... these probably should've been tossed. Hubby had the chicken fried steak. It was burned and slathered in gravy. Tbh, it was just ok. My ham steak and omelette were served 12 minutes apart. My husband's food was delivered 12 minutes before mine, with my ham steak. Bizarre timing from the kitchen. The ham steak was ok. But not from a bone in ham, as they described. Overall, meh. Lovely service. Nice girl. She kept apologizing, but really just needed more help with a focus on food quality. Took 25 minutes with a mostly empty restaurant to deliver our bill. But here's the kicker. No debit or credit cards. CASH ONLY establishment. Hmmm....
