We stopped for lunch on our way through town. What a great stop. This place is kept so clean, it shined. Our server (owner?) brought us menus as soon as we were seated.... friendly, nice. The chicken fried steak was about the biggest I had ever seen on a plate (or was it called country fried here?) It was not only huge but absolutely delicious and devoured quickly. The mashed potatoes were definitely not instant. The other plate ordered was an open faced hot beef sandwich. One word -- delicious!! Everything about Wagon Wheel Cafe was top notch. This place is great! Super cute, small town vibe, waitresses knew everyone. We felt so welcome. We came from out of town and were just visiting and came across Wagon Wheel Cafe. So glad we did! The food was great, the prices were great and the customer service was amazing! We needed some help getting fishing gear and got directions to a local place as well. Definitely worth stopping in. Stoped here on the way home to get the tires fixed on the trailer. The Les Schwab here is full of the nicest group ever by the way. The chicken fried steak, French dip, and patty melt were amazing. The Banana Cream pie and blueberry pie were delicious as well as being made from scratch. Big servings for a small price, definitely check this place out. The perfect diner breakfast. I love that they have different sized breakfasts. The prices were great, but even better was the food. I'm a bacon snob and loved the flavor of theirs. My egg was perfectly cooked. The pancake was thick but light and fluffy, not dense as it's so often the case. My companion's biscuits and gravy was flavorful without being overly peppery or salty. Nice fluffy biscuits. If you are a coffee snob the coffee here won't suit you, but it is decent diner coffee. Service was friendly, prompt, and attentive. Overall, Yelp steered us right again. My wife and I recently purchased some land just outside of town. We stopped here for lunch one day. The food is good, prices are reasonable, and the service is excellent. On the last trip, we stopped again - this time for breakfast. The place was packed, so it took a little while, but that is understandable. While we waited, we chatted with the waitress when she was between tables. She is extremely friendly. We love this town. So, if you are in the area, stop buy. Town spot with few options- I find it hard to be too critical, this spot has food that seems to be what the locals like. I had a mushy tuna melt, husband had omelet with ham and hash browns, pretty ordinary. My tuna melt came with way too many tasteless fries, probably frozen. Had breakfast with family here. Use to come here years ago with my Dad. Walking in here is like going back in time. Old, needs a little TLC but, the staff is friendly, the food was good, cooked perfectly, not greasy, great prices. Nothing on the breakfast menu was more than $10. Used to go regularly when I lived in Alturas. Have been back twice in the last couple months and it has not disappointed! Excellent food, huge servings and super friendly staff. My daughter ordered fish and chips, expecting three small pieces like all other restaurants. She got three pieces that were the size of an entire fish. She normally doesn't eat a lot so she figured there would be lots leftover - she finished almost two full pieces because it was so good. My club sandwich was huge. I couldn't fit my mouth around the whole thing, even after squishing it. I had to eat it in small sections. Plenty of meat - definitely didn't skimp! The salad was fresh and very tasty. Waitresses were super friendly. Extremely busy, but still friendly. The number of people (regulars) that continued to come in the entire time we were there shows that business is great, and that's due to an excellent staff and delicious food! read more

I really like this place. A typical small town place where the locals come for breakfast, coffee and conversation. The usual waitress does an amazing job and insures your coffee is full and does it with a great attitude. I usually have the Bacon, Eggs, Hashbrowns and English Muffin and everytime it is cooked to perfection and served promptly. We landed in Alturas, CA & chose this restaurant because of the stars that it got and I can tell you... We're glad we did! Both the husband and I had the special which started off with a huge bowl of cream of chicken soup... then came the breaded fried chicken sandwich with bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and fries on the side! In the context of Alturas, we're "four star fans" based on great breakfasts, friendly "all are welcome here" people, sparkling ambiance and good value prices. When staying at the associated the Wagon Wheel Motel (separate review and we recommend it) this is an easy walk across the parking lot for breakfast. (Tip: They serve lunch and dinner too.) Family owned and pride of ownership shows in everything. Service was top notch, in spite of them being usually pretty full with folks who seemed mostly like locals, some of whom are obviously hard working ranchers. Our breakfasts of eggs and biscuits (for one) and pancakes (for the other) were delicious and very reasonably priced. One of us was tempted to have a piece of the homemade pie as the breakfast choice (we were on vacation after all) but we opted to buy a piece of apple pie as take out and had it later in the day as lunch on our drive to Las Vegas. WONDERFUL pie...great crust...I think pie ala mode may be my breakfast here next time. A slice of pie plus a slice of Americana family eatery...what's not to like here. Delightful. read more

This restaurant has old town, country charm, that reminded me of some time I spent in Wyoming. The people who work at the restaurant treat you like family, not customers. They use a lot of "Hon" and "Darling", and it reminds me of eating at grandma's house as a child. We stopped in for breakfast, and they were serving an Easter brunch. For $12.99 per person we enjoyed: Scalloped potatoes, which were a little runny but still good; sausage and peppers that tasted awesome; BBQ ribs; spaghetti and meatballs; sausage link and bacon; as well as a salad bar that served fruit and deviled eggs. The price also included eggs made to order. I ordered scrambled eggs, and I could tell they were made from actual eggs and not some pre-packaged stuff. We were traveling from Reno to Bend. Based on Yelper's we stopped by Wagon Wheel and had Brunch. I ordered a Reuben and my wife ordered the meat loaf. I thought my sandwich would taste like Pastrami..... I was wrong. My wife's Meat Loaf was made fresh. I am terrible at meatloaf and my meatloaf was better than the meal she received. Next time through I think we will bypass Alturas. Bring Deli meat, cheese and crackers and stop at a park. It will be a better meal without later consequences. read more

I'm hoping this was just an off night. Our server wasn't in the happiest of moods. We asked for a child's menu and was told with a sarcastic tone to use the senior menu. Our drinks were never refilled and no offers were made by the server to have them refilled. I ordered a side salad that I asked to have come out before my main course. Took about 30 minutes for this to happen and it eventually showed up with the main course anyways. About halfway through eating(~10mins)the server comes up to our table, pulls out our check, places it on the table and walks away. Again no offer for refills, ask us how the meal turned out or if we needed anything else. Pretty much the rest of the time we got the vibe to hurry up and get out since it was coming up to closing time. My wife went to the front to pay the bill while I finished up getting everything together to leave. On our way out the server told me "have a good night". I replied with "you too" and she replied quickly with "we will now that we're closed". read more
