Pique-Nique is a small French restaurant located in Tanner Street Park near the intersection of Bermondsey and Tanner Streets in Southwark, a little ways south of the striking skyscraper Londoners call The Shard. The staff communicate with eachother in French, preparing and serving delicious meals. On the night we were there, the limited printed menu was supplemented by several special entrees that were intended for sharing. From what we saw, and what we had, the portions were more than ample and, considering that they serve two and in most cases produced a dividend to take away for another meal, pleasantly affordable. The salad of tomates anciennes was ample for two; its dressing served nicely as a dipping sauce for the excellent French loaf that came alongside. Our dinner of black-leg chicken ("from the south of France," we were told), roasted on a rotisserie and carved into portions in the kitchen, was served with a good supply of roast potatoes in a delicious mild brown gravy. The short wine list was unfamiliar as far as we were concerned, but the wine we chose (one of the less expensive ones) complemented the food well and went down easily. All in all, Pique-Nique is a gem, well worth the extra effort to discover by making your way beyond the tennis courts to the far corner of Tanner Street Park. read more
