Passed by this little shop and found out it was one of the first pipe shops that opened in San Francisco. I just walked into some history right there! They were really friendly there and showed me some really unique pieces. The lady who assisted me seemed to know so much about the pieces and the artists as well. I fell in love with this little turtle she showed me, she said the artist was situated in Santa Cruz and making his pieces from there and lives in Yosemite now. She also told me how simple it was to clean the little guy. I really feel like I got a one of a kind unique piece that just looks stunning. Best energy, possibly of any store ever, not just amongst smoke shops.

I've shopped at this store for pipes and accessories for the past 15 years. Recently, I received a $500 vaporizer for my birthday that was bought there and, unfortunately, it was not the kind I wanted. Although the sales girl knew the vaporizer was a birthday gift, she never informed the gift giver that it could never be returned. And, of course, she's the one that recommended the most expensive one they carry. I called and spoke to her and asked if I could exchange it for another kind or get store credit but the nicest thing she said was that I could take my chances selling it on Ebay. No matter what I said all she could say was "all sales are final." Not one iota of flexibility! The place has no monopoly, even on the same block. With the dumb rules and bad attitude, it's a mystery how they stay in business. I'm assuming they are listed in all the guidebooks and attract tourists who've never seen a smoke shop before. Anyway, I've never shopped there since or had any need to. The place has never been that great but I felt very loyal and kept coming back. They certainly don't value that type of customer. read more

I was initially drawn to Pipe Dreams due to its historic status as the oldest smoke shop on Haight Street and have returned a few times since then to buy hookah and lighters. The facade of the shop is appropriately colorful, like the many novelty items and souvenirs it sells in addition to the smoking paraphernelia its been known for since 1969. Everyone I've encountered here has been friendly and informative. Pipe Dreams is worth a visit at least once in your life, even if you don't smoke. read more

Oh man, i really love this shop !!! These guys are so friendly and extremely knowledgeable (of course should be), and they've got a crapload of different designs and whatnot. Squealed in my head like a little school girl hehehehe I felt that the prices are very decent, you can get pipes that are like 10 bucks (10 BUCKS!!!) to like, i dunno, 60 or more.. depending on how much of a toker or "expertise" you are, if you will. Wood, glass, metal, they got em all. Came here on a recommendation of Cynthia B. and definitely glad I checked them out !! They give good tips and suggestions, and I ended up walking out with a real nice one in hand and skipping along Haight. We strolled from place to place and comparison-shopped to our heart's content. But when it came time to buy, Pipe Dreams won us over. Really good selection -- and many items are actually made by glass blowers in SF. The people behind the counter were very friendly, knowledgeable and humurous. Along with our purchase, they threw in pipe cleaners and a lighter. A few decades from now, watch for us. Ok first off you're in the haight district.. now lets think back to the 60's when hippies migrated to this area.. hmm what did they do.. smoked pot and dropped acid! I really don't like Joshua P's review about this place and "pot heads" in general. I really hate when people say pot heads are non productive members of society! I know tons of pot heads who are very smart people who are active members of society and some who are very high up there. Don't come to the haight expecting to not see bong shops, this is what made the haight ashbury what it is known for today. I have bought many things from this store and all have lasted me a long time. Quality blown glass and some of it's locally made. Best advice I have ever gotten when buying from a pipe shop: When going into any pipe shop with the intention to purchase a piece especially something that's a little costly bring cash and cash only.. then you bargain to get the best deal. If you bring your plastic you will not get a good deal... anyone who pays full price for piece at a smoke shop is being ripped off. Note: If you are visiting the haight expect to see pipe shops,hippies, crazy people on drugs and people trying to sell you drugs. This is not abnormal for this area of town and it hasn't been for a loooong time. Ahh yes, good old haight st, gotta love it! I love it when I see the Guard Cat. Pipe Dreams is by far the most authentic head shop on Haight St. It is also the oldest. The quality of the products are excellent. The prices are great. As a very new smoker, I don't know much about the ins and outs and types and things and stuff and various accoutrements that go into it. I needed help! And boy, did I get it! Ash helped us finding a water pipe, and showed us everything from basic to wild. He really knows his stuff, and I never felt pressure to buy a more expensive piece (even though we did). He went above and beyond explaining how to best use everything and how to keep everything nice and clean. We ended up going with a beautiful Mighty Chalice due to Ash's glowing recommendation. I always prefer buying locally, and Mighty Chalice is produced here in the Bay Area. They have a great selection of all sorts of pipes, ranging from very affordable to not so affordable. But beyond that, they truly have one of the best employees I've ever come across in a retail shop of any kind. Thank you so much! read more

I've been to Pipe Dreams twice already, but from those visits I can confidently give the store 5/5 rating. They have a truly wide selection of glass pieces as well as everything related to glass or smoking including real red wood Sherlock Holmes tobacco pipes, ton of accessories, and supplies. Main attraction of course is the very good selection of blown glass works of art. Some of it is very affordable and other stuff is fancy and prices are sky high although for a good reason. Some of the work of art glass pipes are truly magnificent and they are from known glass blowers. There are are also many high quality non decorative clear glass pipes of varying thickness. You can find anything you want here. I checked the prices from online stores as well and this store does not actually cost much more and in fact has many things which would be more expensive at many sites online for a similar piece. A lot of the pipes they sell are from authentic professional glass blowers and not imitators. At least I could tell that from a number of pieces such as the honeycomb pipe. Bought a bunch of filters here since they have almost every size possible. The first smoke shop on Haight and it's not even close to Ashbury at all. This makes it awesome because not too many tourists come in and stare at all the crazy bongs like in others. Got recommendations on vaporizers here and they even gave me a free bic lighter when I bought my first bong. They do keep out anybody under 18 which is good because there's just so much glassware around. I'd definitely keep coming here with my friends to buy random stuff during those random hours of the day. read more

Went in to get a vape pen and made it clear that I don't know anything. The man helping me knew his stuff and I was out of there within 20 minutes. Went home and tried to charge it but it wouldn't charge at all. It just stayed dead. I had it on the charger for a while but the light never turned green. I guess I'll be returning it. By far the best place to get a vaporizer, I got my PAX and Omnicron v2 cartridges here. A dollar spent here goes so much further than most any other head shop on Haight where they just carry generic stock glass that comes off of a more or less anonymous assembly line. Guy with a long beard and black hat helped us out (named Ash, maybe???), and explained the differences between all the ones they had there.
