This is our go-to spot in our hometown of Natchitoches. Good bar, good drafts, great service, food is wonderful (pizzas and burgers particularly), just a good ole place to cool one's evening - not too quiet, but not too rowdy. Just right, and we always meet interesting folks from out of town or even a local that we haven't met yet. Often we'll find people we know hanging out there, and it's always someone we like! The food is average bar food, the beer is warm, the mixed drinks are garbage and the service is terrible. The bartenders cater to a bunch of old drunk regulars and no one else. The bartenders actually call the owner "big daddy". read more

We went in on a quite Sunday afternoon, nothing else in the area was open. Only a few tables with patrons. So full bar with a young, I'm assuming college kid bartender, that had idea how to make a martini or a cosmo?!! We almost jumped behind the bar to help! So food was actually ok. We were surprised after the drink ordering. Catfish and gumbo were excellent! Burger was ok. Salad was ok. I don't think mushrooms or large slices of red onion belong in a salad. Waiters, servers need help. They look like they just rolled out of bed and didn't brush their hair and or ran to work in their gym clothes. No utensils provided when they served the food and we asked for water and she brought one to the table. There were 2 of us eating. Just to be fair, we arrived at 7:30 and the kitchen was closing at 8:00. We ordered quickly-three burgers and a grilled cheese. We made no special requests. There was one other table with two people who also ordered food just before we did. It took a little long to get the food but that could have been because we were so close to closing time. The fries were a bit overcooked but we just let it go. The burgers were served with lettuce, tomato, and onion. We asked for mayo, mustard, and ketchup. One serving of mayo was brought out for three burgers! We asked for more and it was tossed on the table in passing. Drink refills were not offered. The food was pretty good but the service was not. Stick with a burger the Ribeye is a leathery piece of gristle. My cut looked like the last chop off the block and was overcooked. We met our cousins in Natchitoches for the Festival of lights & stopped in the Pioneer Pub for drinks & some good bar food. We started off with the Wookie....Homemade fries topped with brisket and melted cheese. Pretty darn good! I ordered the El Camino Burger with Cheese, Homemade Salsa, Guacamole & Jalapenos.....it was terrific! One cousin ordered the Mushroon Cheeseburger, another ordered the Shrimp Po-boy & hubby ordered the Spicy Shrimp Quesadilla....everyone was really pleased with their choices. I will go back to Pioneer Pub. It's the perfect laid back little Pub off the main drag in Natchitoches! read more

My husband and I tried this restaurant while visiting. We really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. We weren't sure what kind of beer we wanted and the waitress was quick to offer samples which is definitely an "A+" in our book. I got the tomato basil pizza and he got the chicken fried steak sandwich. Both very good. Definitely a place to visit if you want good food and a place to relax! read more

We had a party of 5, one of our family members was on crutches due to a recent knee injury. We asked them if we could put two tables together to give him some room. We asked twice & were told no even though there were 4 open tables around us. No one was there to seat us when we showed up, if so we could have avoided this. We ate here while in town for the Christmas lights. First--they had a kid cartoon playing in the TV at the bar instead of the LSU football game. It's a pub/bar.... The waitress brought out our order but part was missing. We had ordered a pizza that we had to point out was missing. I had to point out it was missing--she didn't even notice. We ended up asking about it three times. Each time she kept saying it would be a few minutes. After 30 minutes we finally asked to cancel the order because we needed to go. She left and came back about 5 minutes later with no check and no pizza. She asked if we could please wait and not take the pizza off because she would get in a lot of trouble. We decided it wasn't worth an argument plus we needed to be somewhere. About 5 minutes later we get the pizza and check. We got the pizza to go and he ate it on the way to the car. About two bites in he was done. The cheese was watery and flavorless. The burgers we had were mediocre at best. One tasted different than the others and was not editable. I would definitely encourage anyone to walk a few doors down and find somewhere else to eat. read more

After getting out appetizers we were informed by someone other than our server that the kitchen was now closed and they would not take our dinner order. Then the server showed up and asked if everyone was ready to order. I told her that they would not accept our dinner order, she said she would be right back. The food is hardly worth the price, and the service is worse. Of the three meals ordered in my party of three, two had to be sent back - one was sent back twice - for failing to deliver what was written on the menu. Somehow, our appetizer was brought out after our meals (that includes the ones we sent back). Beers were notably underfilled, coffee was delivered cold, chicken was cool and rubbery, and the gator was the chequear meat I'd ever eaten. The Wookie, which appears to be their "favorite" appetizer, was just mediocre and soggy cheese fries. Service was extremely slow, but it wasn't busy. I don't want to go somewhere average to bad, and Im also looking for some recommendations on foods that I may want to try when arriving at a destination. As I was reviewing the local spots on my Yelp app, I kept coming back to this place. It seemed like a restaurant that I would like, but their reviews weren't necessarily the highest. I eventually decided that they were going to be on my list of places to try, and tonight was the night. I'm glad I did... as I had a very enjoyable evening. First, the ambiance of this quaint little downtown area is great. I really like what this city has done to attract visitors. Upon entering the Pioneer Pub, my dinner guest and I walked in and found a table to sit. It definitely feels like a mixture of a pub and a restaurant. The tables are fairly cramped together and the bar just a forks-throw away, and the menus are folded up paper stuffed in the middle of the table. We were quickly greeted by an extremely nice, young waitress and she got our drink orders. After looking over the menu, I opted on a blackened gator poboy, and my friend ordered the redfish. We both thought that we should get some Louisiana cuisine while we had the opportunity. The food was outstanding! The gator was seasoned great and cooked well. The bread was a hard crusted roll and had a nice crisp texture. My meal came with hand cut fries and a pickle spear. My friend raved about his fish. Being from Kenya he grew up on fish, and he was very impressed with his meal. One of the complaints that I've read about this establishment is that they took too long with the meal. I didn't feel that we had to wait an exuberant amount of time and I enjoyed the opportunity to have good conversation over a nice meal. Even though it's a pub, I found the atmosphere in the restaurant to be quaint. I would recommend this location for a date with your spouse or a business dinner. Once you are finished eating, I'd recommend you go across the street and head down to the river or take a stroll downtown. Happy dining read more

If I could give it no stars I would. Our waitress had far too many tables to provide adequate service. Our main course arrived prior to our salads. And then we had to wait for an additional 5 mins for silverware and in the meantime salads showed up. There were 4 of us in our party, and what am I supposed to do at a tiny 4 place table with center piece, 4 entrees, a few beers and an appetizer that all show up at the same time. I ordered the chicken fried steak which had obviously lived under a heat lamp for at least 30 mins prior to coming out to the table, it was like chewing an old adidas shoe. My son had the garlic and shrimp pizza which had approximately 3.5 lbs of garlic on a 9 inch pizza. Holy shnikes Batman. I am really surprised that this friendly pub has such a low overall rating. I am going to give 5 stars. Only been twice, but reviewing as a traveler, I feel I can refer fellow travelers. The pub is exactly what it should be. Great location, laid back and friendly, good pub food.... Cold beer on tap. Some local beers the bartender gave tastings of, and when the barrel tapped out, she gave that half glass free, and started over. Free WiFi, which can come in handy for travelers, not just the local university students. We wanted to cross the street and take some photos while our pizza was in the oven. I asked my sweet waitress if she would be more comfortable if I paid first. Her response was " You're fine...this is Louisiana". And to make it even more perfect, as we were walking back, she stuck her head out the front door and called "Ya'lls foods ready!" Southern charm and hospitality at its finest! This place is tacky. Really slow service. The options on the menu are abysmal, and the quality of the food is suspect. They clearly couldn't decide on a theme for the restaurant so they chose EVERYTHING. There's junk on All the walls and it makes you feel like the walls are closing in. I've been to plenty of small town pubs and this happens to be the one and only we found during our short stop through Natchitoches, LA. Being that it was one of the only places open late on a Sunday afternoon, we stopped in for a bit. Having just come from New Orleans we were immediately relieved at the prices here... very affordable menu and drinks! I had the "half" quesadilla with shrimp which ended up being the size of half a pizza! The wait staff was extremely pleasant and quick. So being pregnant I'm starving and was looking for a place to eat. So me and my boyfriend sit down to a table and one waitress cleans a table next to us TWICE, the other two ladies walk by us. No one says anything. We sat there for 18 mins!!!!! Couldn't get a drink, a hello, nothing. If the floor was closed a waitress shoulda told us to move to the bar but no all 3 ladies working tonight looked at us from behind the bar then walked passed us with no word. Completely ignoring us. One of the worst meals I can recall. Nachos absolutely tasteless and toppings just carelessly dumped in clumps. Any home cook could have done better. It did not appear any effort whatsoever was made to make them "restaurant quality." This item was so bad even though we were still hungry, we only ate a small amount and left. My Doritos "nacho cheese" chips right out of the bag taste way better and that's what I am going to fill up on later. Service okay but nothing special. Use to be such a great place. It has really gone down hill though. Sad to see. Food quality had dropped. A lot more pre-made now and pre-packaged (Guac from a bag?? Ew.) They hire only cute little college girls as servers/bar tenders, which would be fine, but the turn over is so high you never get anyone knowledgeable or fast. SLOWEST SERVICE EVER. Plus they bring out food one plate at a time, so a 6 party group may get served over a 30 minute period of time. Really hope they turn this place around. So sad to see it go so far down hill read more
