Being a DC/NOVA resident, my opportunities to sample Pit Beef are few and far between. But we are now in the process of moving to Baltimore and so we finally tried Pioneer. This is the real deal. I had my first on Wednesday {would have had one Father's Day Sunday if they were open}. Returned today, Saturday for my second and to introduce my partner to this delight. First time I had a super medium rare with BBQ, tiger, horseradish and sliced onion. The BBQ sauce was way to strong and there was WAY too much meat to bun. Stil it was delicious even if eaten in my car due to rain. Today we both had regulars, rare, tiger, horseradish and onion. Perfection! With out the BBQ sauce you can taste the smoke and the flavor of the beef better. Can't wait to try them again. My partner wants to try the BBQ Pork and I want to try the turkey and the ham. This place is incredible. Fresh-smoked beef; you say how you like it (rare, for me) and they slice it to order. Get as many toppings as you want: cheese is 50 cents and the others are free. But don't overdo it because the beef is so flavorful. I like the super with horseradish, au jus, onions and salt and pepper. $8.50, cash only. Great customer service. Everyone is always friendly. The pit beef is on point. I miss the pre-COVID days when you would get a sample of the meat before they put it on your sandwich but I'm content with not getting a taste test. :) I know the medium pit beef is always just right. I get mine with tiger sauce and onions. Definitely go when I get a chance. I have tried other places but I keep coming back to this one. It is not about the looks because the outside of the building doesn't look like much; however, the pit beef is what counts. read more

No one needs me to enhance the reputation of Pioneer. Typically preferred the now closed Kirkwood on National Pike because you wouldn't have to endure the long line at Pioneer. But it moves quickly and the team is cheery inside. The fresh cut fries are the underrated hero to go along with the beef or pork or ham or turkey. This is the best pit beef I have ever had. The guys who work here are really nice and they always give you a sample of the meat you order for your sandwich. The meat is always tender and moist. They allow you to mix your meat so I always get medium beef & ham, kids get turkey & ham, but they are willing to do any combo we have come up with. Their fries are similar to boardwalk fries, but sometimes they are not all fully cooked. The flavor is always good, plus they have vinegar to put on them. You had me at Pit Beef. This place is the definition of a hole in the wall spot but it's a stand-alone location. I knew it was going to be good because I was brought here by someone who had done a pit beef tour of Baltimore. What's that you ask? They literally drove all over Baltimore one day eating pit beef sandwiches. I can only imagine the meat sweats that occurred that night. I walked up this paint chipped building and entered nostril heaven. The smokey smell of meat entered my nose and my heart was as happy as my belly was about to be. I kept it simple and ordered the regular Pit Beef Sandwich with onions and Tiger Sauce. The tiger sauce is like a creamy horseradish and it's good. Like, really good. You can pick any of their sauces or even mix it up by having more than one. They ask what temperature you'd like your slices - I went med rare if you're wondering - and then you pay at the next window. There is only picnic table seating outside so in the winter months, you are taking this to go and enjoying your epic sandwich in your car. If it was so good, why not five stars? The menu is easily accessible and easy to understand. Step up to the window, tell the cook how thick/thin you'd like your meat sliced, order any sides, slide down the line, pay and add condiments as you leave out the other door. Very simple. I ordered pit turkey, fries w/ gravy, and a pickle. The turkey was hot and piled high with tomatoes and horseradish. The horseradish gave my sandwich a mean kick!! I wasn't too into this place at first because it is a literal shack and as pit beef is not my thing but their pit turkey and pit ham and gravy fries are freakin delicious. Order takers are very friendly and the line moves swiftly and you can literally mix and match meats. They open the doors and have outdoor seating so it is covid safe. My ob is nearby and i literally look forward to coming to this place every time I have an appt.
