I asked my daughter to recommend somewhere nearby to grab a bite, and she suggested Fritanga Caña Brava, a Nicaraguan restaurant near SW 8th Street and 29th Avenue. So off I went! When I arrived, the parking lot was packed, which I took as a good sign. Inside, the place didn't look like much, but it appeared clean and had a few tables for those who wanted to eat there. Most of the action was at the counter, where a long line of customers ordered their food from behind a glass display. Fortunately, the line moved pretty quickly, and I could tell that takeout was a big part of their business. I ordered the churrasco steak, gallo pinto (Nicaraguan rice and beans), fried cheese, sweet plantains, and Nicaraguan sausage. Let me tell you, I was so hungry that I practically rushed to the table and devoured my meal in record time! Overall, the food was pretty good. The prices were reasonable, and I enjoyed the combination of traditional Nicaraguan flavors. The restaurant also seemed well staffed, with plenty of friendly employees working together to handle the large number of customers coming through the door. A Little Background Fritanga Caña Brava appears to have been serving the Miami community since around 2006-2008, putting its history at approximately 18-20 years. That's a respectable run in Miami's competitive restaurant scene! Public records identify Eugenio A. Acevedo Sr. as president of the current business corporation, although I couldn't confirm the original founder or uncover a verified story about how the restaurant got started. Interestingly, the location has some history of its own. According to local food writer Burger Beast, the property once housed La Hacienda Restaurant, which opened in 1946. The old roadside sign remains a reminder of the location's past. My Final Take Would I have discovered this place on my own? Honestly, probably not. If my daughter hadn't recommended it, I might have driven right past it without giving it a second thought. But I'm glad I stopped in! The food was good, the prices were fair, the staff was friendly, and the service moved along efficiently despite the crowd. The dining area wasn't particularly impressive, and while I enjoyed my meal, nothing stood out enough to make me want to give it four or five stars based on this visit alone. Still, if you're looking for casual, reasonably priced Nicaraguan comfort food in Miami, Fritanga Caña Brava is worth considering.
