Falling in love in Hong Kong will always play back in NEON RED for me. Fade in Ping Pong 129 Gintonería. One of my favorite bars in the world. Also locally known as Ping Pong City. It used to be a store selling ping pong stuff back in the 60s when ping pong was a big deal in Hong Kong. You will find it in the Sai Ying Pun neighborhood, beyond a red door, down a long flight of stairs, encased in exposed concrete, bathed in neon red light. I won't post a photo of the street door. It shouldn't be hard to find and you should want the adventure. We walked, but it's right at a taxi drop off. Delicious and cleverly crafted beverages, but especially or only if you enjoy gin, specifically gin & tonics. That's the menu: all G&Ts. Lots of Spanish gin. It's a Spanish influenced gin bar after all. Spanish tapas also to seal the theme. Fantastic service and music choices. This must be underground magic. Dreamy cement bunker city romance if it ever were a thing. It gets crowded and full with locals and expats alike and you might be told to come back another time. After being around for a while, I finally made it out to trying Ping Pong. Hidden behind a single red door, Ping Pong is an underground bar with high ceilings and a bright neon sign. It can feel spacious yet crowded at the same time. Although I'm not an expert on gin, I decided to go for the classic gin & tonic (Half Crown). I wish they had more seasonal flavors in their menu, maybe like a summery peach, lychee twist, or mangosteen punch, just something besides the classic citrus-flavor profiles. It was a solid G&T, but a bit pricy for HK$130. A few friends in the group ordered some food, but the verdict was just so-so. Someone in my group had accidentally knocked my half-empty glass over, causing it to spill and break into pieces on the floor. Stayed in a hotel nearby in Sai Ying Pun and had to check it out. We came on a Saturday night and were told all the tables were taken but we stayed by the bar and was able to snag seats. I love gin and this place has all the gin cocktails. Highly recommend! read more

This area is also a hotspot for neighborhood cafe and it peaks my interest to try a gin bar during our stay. I've only been here once and enjoyed it though gin really isn't my thing. I have to say that between here and Dr. Fern it may be enough to convert me to a full time gin drinker. The service here is, they can be nice but they're mostly stand offish, definitely more local style where you have to be a bit more assertive than back in the US. They have a bunch of different gins and a bunch of different tonics and while I'm a fan of brown liquors the combinations they have are easy to drink, refreshing and come with a big ass cube of ice. Food wise I had their 'rustic potatoes,' they were fries, good ones but basically just as annoying as someone saying haricot verts instead of green beans. The only real knock I have on this place is that they'll have events or music and there's no real notice of it until you get there. I lived in the area and left because I just wanted a place to drink but had to pay a cover because some art event or band was playing and I didn't know until the doorman pointed at the flyer. read more

Contemporary decor with an old school vibe, the speakeasy nature of PPG is an easy selling point and the gin cocktails are on point. After making nice with the bouncer, one will descend down the stairs to a rather impressive scene of a large bar, super high ceilings, NSFW art, and good number of tables to enjoy a beverage or 10. Formally a ping pong hall (or as I was told), this makeover has been part of the neighborhood's revitalization as a nightlife destination. Bars are popping all over the place and the eateries are starting to follow suit. Like vegans at a steakhouse or shellfish allergy sufferers at a oyster spot, non-gin lovers shouldn't be here. The core product is gin cocktails, which despite a lack of popularity in the spirit world, is being highlighted by places like PPG. Gin fans and folks willing to indulge in concoctions of the cocktail kind, should find solace here. I've enjoyed the GinSelf (200HKD) and the London Dry (90HKD), which come with handcrafted ice and local market fruit. The cocktail prices will vary between 140-200HKD. While it definitely feels pricey, it should be noted that there is no service charge. Which is a good thing because the staff certainly sports a 'tude, especially on weekends. If you had asked me 4 years ago if I saw Sai Ying Pun becoming the next Brooklyn, I wouldn't believe you. But with hidden alley drink places like Ping Pong popping up left and right, you better believe it. At some point, this place was a really hip scene for artsy-fartsy folks. At one point, they even had a bouncer guarding the front doors. cray ! 2 years later, Ping Pong is no longer a best kept secret and virtually most of my friends have been here and moved on to other places. I've even read about them in the Philippines airline flight magazine, so yeah even tourists know about this place too. But that's not what Ping Pong is all about. To me, this establishment is more of a stamp of gentrification, complete with cool restaurants and bars refurbished out of ping pong parlors.... All in for all, this is a place I will come by here for a drink when I'm in the area. its a pretty cool place, guaranteed no other ping pong in hk. I think I have now discovered the coolest bar in Hong Kong. It is a gin joint in Sai Ying Pun at Second Street 129, that has been converted from a former table tennis hall, hence the bar name Ping Pong. They have an extensive selection of gins, ranging from organic farmer's gins from the UK, through to Japanese gin (well according to the menu it is Japanese, but is in fact French - naughty, naughty). The cheapest gins (supermarket brands) start at HKD80, the most "exclusive" will set you back HKD250. As one would expect, the bar staff are connoisseurs of gin and are more than happy to recommend according to your own preferences. Each of the gins has been expertly paired to their own tonic and fruit twist, who would have that thought so much of a G&T relied on the choice of the T? The final wonderful flourish is the hand carved ice. Hacked out of house brick sized blocks, you will have a super cool (see what I did there?) purified iceberg chilling your gin to perfection. The bar also serves a small selection of delicious Spanish tapas dishes. These include such delights as patatas bravas, which rather than the standard potatoes rolled in tomato sauce, were a deconstructed version of crispy baked baby potato with a tomato puree icing, extremely moreish ham and cheese croquettes, and anchovies, pure unadulterated anchovies - yummers! The atmosphere is a cool modern chic, but feels encompassing rather than exclusive. The venue has high ceilings, an industrial unfinished charm, and some eye-opening art that the chaps will probably rather enjoy. Just a note about finding the place, it's hard! The entrance is an unmarked red door at 129 Second Street. Once through the door, you have to trot down a set of dark concrete steps, but don't be intimidated, just head on down and you will be dazzled as the room opens up infront of you. Cool atmosphere but drinks are a bit on the expensive side, especially for a place without a view. It is however, a good after dinner date place. Music is not too loud as the ambiance provides a lounge-y feel. Went here just for a round of drinks as this place is definitely not the place to get drunk in. Pink door, neon lights in Cantonese characters - who would have thought it's a gintoneria until you go down the stairs and see the high ceiling held by bare concrete pillars? Even though I've lived 3 blocks away from Ping Pong for the past 2 years, and enjoy having awesome cocktails in Soho / LKF, I never stopped by Ping Pong till earlier this week. I'm a gin drinker so it made sense to give them place a shot. To be fair, I'm not really a G&T kinda gal. Wait, but I thought you just said you're a gin drinker... Yes, that's correct, I am a gin drinker, but I am not a tonic drinker. I got the only thing on the menu that did not include tonic (even thou it still tasted like there was tonic? It's probably me just going crazy since it should be ginger beer instead of tonic) - Gin & Ginger (UK) with East Imperial Ginger Beer and Cucumber Peel. If you're a G&T lover, you'd probably love this place. For me, the Gin & Ginger cocktail was just-ok. It was nothing special. For $130, I rather go to Origin or Quinary, bars that can create some good, mean, cocktails. The space is quite large and unique. This is probably in an area that is the last vestiges of old colonial style Hong Kong. Behind this bright red door tucked discretely on the side and down "do not try while tipsy" steep stairs is a novelty gin meets tapas cocktail lounge. While service is erratic, jamon iberica on the dry side, the skewers were delicious in particular the lamb. My gin drinks were meh but maybe I hit them on a strangely 2 big groups night. Been here twice 2-3 weeks ago. As at early September 2014 they had a total of 14 G&Ts on the menu, out of which the "Tanqueray No.10, Fever-Tree Tonic, grapefruit twist" (HKD130) is my favourite so far. Also had their ham croquettes before, which were crispy on the outside (thanks to the use of panko breadcrumbs I guess?) but more like a well-seasoned cream-flavoured roux on the inside, with neither visible traces of cured ham nor the "umami" flavour one would have expected therefrom. Remodeled from an old ping pong hall, this new speakeasy-type bar, that specializes in gin, is a great addition to a slow gentrifying neighborhood. The red door welcomes you to a long concrete staircase, which leads you to an open seating area filled with tables, couches, and lounging chairs. The long bar on one side of the wall features a vast selection of gin. The decor is eclectic, with a wall of pictures of female breasts, the standing lamps are made out of old ping pong baskets, and the red lighting adds to the mysterious quality of the venue. The menu lists the gin they carry and different tonics. There are also a few selections of other spirits if you're not into gin. They also have a kitchen that serves light bar snacks if you need to a little something to absorb some of the delicious gin. Great spot to relax and lounge with a few drinks in hand. read more

I love gin so I am naturally biased here. I was first introduced to Ping Pong by a colleague who somehow managed to convince the staff that he was a friend of the organiser of a trendy private party (pretty sure I didn't meet this criteria!) We ventured the narrow streets and peeked through the crack of the discreet red door before heading down the stairs ready to consume copious amounts of my favourite spirit. This is one of a handful of hipstery speakeasies in HK and is usually fairly busy. How can I complain about huge glasses of gin-based cocktails less than 10 minutes from my place? The massive glasses are, however, accompanied by huge cubes of ice and are considerably more expensive than your usual G&T but this place is a fab place to catch up with friends/fellow sipsmiths nonetheless! Tapas is also pretty good here. If you like trivia, this hidden bar was once an old ping pong hall AND this place makes an appearance in the movie "It's already tomorrow in Hong Kong". Seating was a little weird because there aren't any booths. There were just chairs and ee are no reservations. Drinks are in the pricier side. Their beer was good but also on the steep side. This place is evidence that Sai Ying Pun is becoming the Williamsburg or Shoreditch of Hong Kong. Stairs are step so watch out. The atmosphere is industrial with hints of 1930s Hong Kong, a look popularised by both Hk design house G.O.D and a political reaction of a longing for the ghost of Hong Kong past. Gin is all they serve and they serve it well. Recommend it, but book ahead if you want a table. read more
