The food was one star at best. Poor quality , don't waste your night out with this place.

I will tried to be fair here. We had a bad experience and honestly can't review the food because they literally ran out prior to us getting there even most of their appetizers were out. We had arrange for a graduation dinner here at 8:30 pm for 8 people. Shortly before we headed to the restaurant they called to make sure we were still coming we I thought was odd. This is where they could have righted a wrong by telling us they were very low on entrees and give us the option to decide to go somewhere else. 4 of the 6 dinner entrees weren't available, mashed potatoes were out. Most of the appetizers were also out. We ended up getting the last 4 small empanadas, 2 pretzels and 2 salads then decided to leave it was 9:30 pm by this time. We ended up at McDonalds yay. They did tried to work with us but it wasn't going to work for us. The bartender was snooty I won't get into that. The food is pricey and what we ate wasn't spectacular. They may have been off that night but again they could have gave us a heads up when they check in with us a hour before we arrived. Graduations dinner ruined. read more

Disappointing! I had the Fricase de Pollo. Described as Cuban style chicken quarters served with potatoes and Spanish style rice. It was a boiled chicken leg and thigh with white rice, a few olives, and some water cress - flavorless and not very good at all. No potatoes, zero flavor, and definitely not worth the price. No where close to the description on the menu. My son wanted the beef short ribs but they were sold out. He settled for the smoked duck wrap and fries - bang average. My wife got the catfish - she liked it. You want to support local establishments but this was a miss. If you're offering a limited menu then have what's on the menu. Three entrees, two appetizers, two beers, a glass of wine and a soda for $230. Disappointing! read more

I thought that the menu could have offered more to choose from--and that was prior to learning they were out of pizza! Fortunately, we found at least one item we wanted to try. The food was decent; better than many spots in State College proper, I guess, but it didn't quite live up to the chic ambiance. Smaller portions might've played a part, or maybe there was just too much fatty carb and not enough protein. The drink almost worked, though it was a bit too strong on the alcohol for me. The service was on the slower side, especially considering how empty it was what with the live music above us, but I really appreciated that the owner of the establishment checked in as we walked out to make sure we enjoyed everything. I can't say there's much competition in the area. I'd give it another shot before making a solid determination. read more

Very delicious food, it's pricey but worth the money. Great service and feel. Just a little more room needed.

Pine Grove Hall is a really cool place. Has a very nice vibe, especially the bar. The service was pretty good too. A really good cocktail list, but my tequila old fashioned was pretty lame. They didn't even have any agave syrup /nectar. But the most important part, the food, was mediocre at best. My margherita pizza came out luke warm. I sent it back. Five minutes later the same pizza came out a little better than luke warm, but definitively more dried out lol. Very little mozzarella and way too much basil. If I had to rate on the pizza alone, it would be barely 2 stars. read more

Cool place. Interesting smash burger. It's a bit sweet but good if you like something different.

I wanted to like this place but it ended up just ok for me. I likedthe farm to table concept but the menu for early May felt both limited and not very exciting. The mozzarella appetizer was very disappointing- I was expecting fresh and it felt like it had been sitting in the refrigerator for a while. Service was well intentioned but didn't meet expectations. Pros: large variety of local beer options and the sea bass large plate had good flavor. read more

The location was adorable with a cozy bar. I wasn't a fan of the drinks or the bartender. There was a drink I was so excited to try but they wouldn't modify slightly. So I settled for a standard old Fashioned. Our server was very good. The bartender had no interaction with our table the full time, but visited our table and the personal interaction was unpleasant. read more

When we were making plans, my daughter referred to Pine Grove Hall as a 'speakeasy', and, having been there, I agree. Walking into a subdued, dark, elegant space for a Sunday brunch turned a lovely meal into an experience. A seasonal, local menu can have plusses and minuses - you may get to have something sublime, and shortly thereafter, you may never get to have it again. My preference is to look at the situation in a positive light - a unique, or at least limited time menu offering is something that you'll always be able to look back on and be happy you had it. In my case, even though I was having the Farmer's Plate, which I imagine is a standard brunch menu item, they happened to be out of the lamb sausage, so I ended up with wild boar cranberry sausage. My daughter had something that I doubt I'll ever see on another menu - a Banh Mi pancake - all the typical flavorings of a Banh Mi, decorating the top of a pancake, topped by a pork chop. Enjoy whatever happens to be on the menu whenever you visit, and enjoy the surroundings - this is a very special place to find in central Pennsylvania. read more

pine grove hall in itself is beautiful. the first thing my family and i noticed how impeccably decorated the place was. the staff was extremely kind. the food however, was lackluster. i never really write reviews, but this meal we were served was so subpar i have to write something. nothing against any of hehe employees but the chef. our appetizers were mid at best no really complaints there. my father and i ordered the cuban chicken as an entree and we were given not only the cheapest cut (leg) but the entire plate was pretty much white ready rice, and the meat itself had literally NO seasoning. like, we were actually served something you would give a dog on its birthday. no flavor whatsoever. disappointed as we went for my sisters pregrad dinner and it was a special occasion. go for drinks, maybe an appetizer, but NOT for entree, especially for how much we were charged. read more

Food and drinks are good--the service is very slow though. We waited over one hour for a burger and fish fry

Very unique restaurant - cozy and quaint. The ambience, for me, was a mix of Harry Potter magical wonder (books on high shelves dimly lit by candles) and a 1920s speakeasy! This establishment caters to those that can truly appreciate thoughtfully created dishes and drinks sourced from local suppliers. I appreciated the amazing vegan options as well. This is not the place for you if you are looking for typical bar fare such as wings and fries. These dishes are sophisticated and menus change seasonally. Drinks are created by professional mixologists, not bartenders. These gentlemen are a wonder to watch, as they skillfully smoke, muddle, twist, zest, stir, and shake drinks to perfection, all while looking dapper in professional suit vests. As a cocktail enthusiast, it was difficult to decide on a single drink, as it was apparent that each one on the menu was expertly created and crafted. I greatly look forward to returning to Pine Grove Hall and trying new dishes and cocktails as the menus change seasonally. read more

It was our 27th wedding anniversary and we wanted to go somewhere different. Our daughter found them on Yelp. She said, "Mom, they have music, farm to table food and an excellent drink menu. Sounds like the perfect place for you!" We went and had the most perfect evening! They took excellent care of us and we were seated upstairs with jazz music wafting up to our ears! We had a romantic evening where we could actually hear each other talk, yet had the added extravagance of live music playing in the background. Our server was wonderful and attentive, yet gave us privacy. The food was delicious and the drinks and wine were amazing. We will be back and we are telling people we know about this gem! read more

I realllllly wated to love this place but it was not good at all. I had a reservation for 4 and we sat upstairs. Great ambiance! They ran out of bloody mary mixer so I got Reisling. Ordered small plates and dinner. The dinner came out first and we said oh thats ok bring it all at once. They forgot my partners small plate altogether. Ok so scallops just ok. Smoked fish dip was good, too much roe. The crispy bread was cold and soggy. Then the mains, the sunchoke pasta was luke warm and probably one of the worst tasting dishes of pasta I have ever had. They put pickled mushrooms in it with sunchokes, sundried like tomatos and truffle. It did not go together at all. The mushrooms tasted like pine sol. Two other got the chicken milinase which was very unseasoned and dry. The actic char was good. Quail eggs were unseasoned. Then the managers were coming around to refill our drinks because our waiter was new and she asked if I needed another wine and I said yes please a Reisling. She said oh, I am not sure what he gave you cuz we dont have a Reisling by the glass. So the waiter brought wine but I have no idea what it was. Two others at the table tasted my pasta and said it was aweful. The woman at the next table told them the scallops were terrible loaded with hot jalapeno so much she was choking on the heat. Really a poor dining experience and very disappointing for the price. Unfortunately they were trying hard and I commend them for their efforts trying to help the server but it was more the food I took issue with. I wont be back. read more

This was our second visit to Pine Grove Hall. For our first visit, we had reservations but for this visit, we arrived in town late and this restaurant was close by and still open. Both times we were there, there wasn't live music, but they do have a stage. Pine Grove has a beautiful bar, and the decor and lighting make for a sophisticated atmosphere. Their menu is unique with interesting cocktails and creative, seasonal dishes that include vegetarian options. What you won't find here is typical bar food such as chicken fingers. Our server was excellent and made suggestions, so my husband ended up ordering the double-cut pork chop which he loved. The portion size was generous. I had the sweet corn lasagna which I liked. However, to call this dish "lasagna" is misleading as it was a pile of vegetables with bechamel sauce rather than layers of vegetables. The Caesar salad served on the side was just radicchio with dressing that had a bit of bitterness to it. Overall, Pine Grove Hall seems like a "find" especially for its sophisticated, city-like atmosphere. read more

If there is a Eggs Benedict on the menu, I am absolutely ordering it. The combination of hollandaise sauce with runny eggs is just so good. The Pork Belly Benedict I ordered comes with a plate full of fresh local greens and perfectly seasoned baby potatoes. The runny eggs sit on top of thick succulent slices of pork belly. Sans English muffin slices. The seasoning is very simple, predominantly salt and pepper. If it were up to me, I would have also liked some sweet glaze(honey or maple syrup) and some chili heat! But it's already tasty, and their menu changes monthly, so I would definitely be back! read more

We absolutely loved our dinner at Pine Grove Hall! It's a small menu, but it's diverse. I'm gluten free and was thrilled to have several options. I wanted to love this. The interior and decor is beautiful, the menu looks amazing and I was ready to have a gorgeous meal. For starters the cauliflower dip was so very good, creamy, salty with surprising bits of sour from the orange-hints of Indian spices...you want to get everything sopped up with the accompanying grilled bread. The squash fries were good and well seasoned. I would cut them thinner and cook them more. The accompanying house ketchup was perfect and great for the fries. We did not have any cocktails but the menu looked amazing. The fish. Perhaps we filled up on the starters and couldn't appreciate it. I feel I have a pretty broad palette, I love new flavors...I understand umami and balance between sweet, sour and salty. I have eaten the unusual and I appreciate complexity. This was too much, the fish was mushy and undercooked, the bean kale stew was delicious and smoky but not hot. The anchovies were an unusual addition. The black radish was undercooked...the pesto was grainy and salty. I wish I lived closer to give this restaurant a second go and enjoy the music. I believe the passion is there. read more

This is a belated review. We went last August for my birthday. We had heard nothing but rave reviews. We had just moved out to the area and wanted to try this for a special occasion. We were pretty disappointed. The positives: Chicken Heart small plate and Corn panna cotta dessert. Both were absolutely delicious and had the rest of the food been of the same quality, it would have lived up to the hype. The negatives: Our mains were very under seasoned. My husband had the steak with peppers and I had the roasted Mediterranean eggplant. The steak needed a lot of salt. The eggplant was fine but nothing special. We weren't impressed, but maybe it was just because everyone we spoke to raves about the restaurant. We may try again sometime since we're only a few minutes away. ‍ read more

There's a new place in town, and it's hitting all the right notes. Ok, it may not be exactly in town - but just a 10 minute drive will get you to Pine Grove Hall, revamped by local musician Liz Grove, who had planned to open in May of this year. But with the pandemic in full swing, restaurants needed to be flexible: starting with takeout meals & drinks in June, Pine Grove Hall now offers indoor & outdoor dining Thursday through Sunday, with a bi-weekly changing farm-to-table menu created from (almost exclusively) local ingredients. On 3 visits so far, I had the pleasure to try several dishes - like fabulous pickled deviled eggs with trout caviar, chilled corn soup with sweet basil, chili-vanilla oil & charred tomatillo, bass brandade with pickled kohlrabi & housemade blini, curried clams and mussels, charred eggplant hummus aka baba ghanoush, and possibly THE best lamb chops of my life. I love that the chef doesn't shy away from heat & uses creative and bold seasonings, and the kitchen's pickling game is fire. There's a changing cocktail menu, and a sizable wine & beer list. Pine Grove Hall recently has invited guest bartenders to share their creations while their main places of business are on hiatus. For the time being, on Saturdays you can find Ellen Braun (Chumley's) mixing drinks, while Sundays are Sc'Eric Horner's (Fuji & Jade Garden/Liberty Café) time to shine. The main room has a state-of-the-art sound system and a great stage for live music. At this point, only instrumental music is planned. The second floor has another beautiful, large room for up to 25 dining guests, which will be great come winter. Liz and her team have put an amazing amount of work into this venue, and the love & care involved in everything - from ingredients to preparation to atmosphere is tangible. I can't wait to go back :-) read more

Amazing staff, wonderful food and great ambiance. The owner has created a nice place for dinner, drinks, and live music.

I visited over the summer with my friend who lives in Happy Valley and we absolutely ADORED Pine Grove Hall. It is such a fine dining experience that doesn't feel pretentious in the slightest. Everything was so delicious and you could really get the local vibe of the food and the establishment. We started with some cranberry focaccia and wine, had a chilled corn soup and a tomato feta grain bowl, and ended with a seasonal fruit custard/flan type dessert. There was definitely more we could have ordered, however. These were some of the vegetarian options and they were absolutely delicious and as a no longer meat eater, the meat sounded pretty good as well. The menu changes with the seasons but continues to provide good options, and it is an absolutely lovely place. Everyone we interacted with was just the sweetest. Will definitely be coming back next time I visit. read more

The service was very good and friendly. They accommodated a table change without a problem. Nice cozy atmosphere and cocktails were very good. Unfortunately, my top-sirloin steak, while cooked well, was very tough. The veggies and sauce were good. My spouse got the fish entree and it was prepared very well and tased good. Had to be careful as it was the whole fish, bones and all. All in all, it's was okay, just wish my steak was better. read more

Pine Grove Hall, you guys knocked our first visit out of the park. We got to sit outside by the creek and it was beautiful out and so nice to be outside. The food and cocktails were incredible. I got the braised boar belly and wanted to lick my plate. All of my friends loved what they got too which included charcuterie board, mushroom farrotto and chicken schnitzel. I got the Gloria Jean Mule to drink and it was so good, (fruity, light, refreshing). My sister and I split the coffee cake for dessert and it was wonderful. Shout out to Evan, our wonderful server. Ambiance of this place is amazing. Can't say enough good things. Great variety of entertainment - in one week recently they had a guitarist playing authentic early blues, a jazz trio, and an all-female Celtic quartet. The food is farm-to-table and the menu constantly changes as a result. The skills behind the bar create impressive and original cocktails. The decor and lighting evoke a 1920's - 1930's speakeasy vibe. We go back repeatedly. read more

Went in about half hour before closing with very low expectations because we all know the rust belt is known for its culinary excellence. But the joke was on me because this place knocks! (As the kids say). The vibe is very speakeasy-ish even though it's not trying to be a speakeasy so much as it's a music venue with a cool vibe that just happens to have that dark masculine ambience that is so conducive to live music and speakeasy's alike. The drink menu is curated to high heavens and the brandied cherries in their old fashioned are delicious--don't forget to dig for it after you're done with your drink or you will be missing out. Our venture happened to be on a Sunday night when State College is a ghost town, yet Pine Grove had a special Latino-inspired menu featuring dishes of plantains and guava and very Latin-American ingredients that those of us from the region easily recognize as the flavors of home. Needless to say, I have had a lot of guava pasteles in my life--from my childhood in Colombia, to the Colombian diasporic community I grew up in within the United States, and all over the Caribbean and Little Havana. And what would you know, this place that I went in expecting an adequate meal that would provide sustenance and not much else has THE BEST GUAVA PASTELES I AND MY BROTHER HAVE EVER HAD! And between the two of us, it's not an exaggeration to say we have probably consumed thousands of these little pieces of heaven. But these were so good that even after the restaurant had closed we had to ask them to dig up some more of these delicious bites from the kitchen so that we could inhale them when we arrive back home. PS - and this is service, I left my credit card at the bar in my guava haze. The bartender had talked to us about where we may saunter off to after dinner, and while we were at one of the places we discussed xe showed up to give me back my card before I even noticed I had left it behind. Now that is service! I only hope the stars align so that every time I find myself in this otherwise dull corner of the country because (Forever Go Blue! And State College can't touch Ann Arbor) the universe at least smiles upon me and allows me to enjoy a meal at Pine Grove Hall - and if the chefs see fit to put the guava pasteles on the permanent menu, I may even come here on purpose! read more

Fabulous food, great recommendations per bartender. Live music! Nice ambiance and pleasant friendly staff.

Very interesting place but they dropped the ball tonight. Ordered a guinea hen which was clearly chicken. At the end of the night, the waitress told us they substitute chicken when they run out of guinea hen. What?!? $29 for a chicken leg. How bizarre she told us that. Also, the scallop plate ($33) had 3 scallops. Too many weird things. Great drinks. Cool setting. Very funky. Chef's decisions tonight were just bizarre. read more

Best restaurant dinner I've had in State College! The place had a really nice ambiance, with vintage charm but still looking fresh and updated. There was an extensive list of drinks including wines, local beers, and cocktails. For appetizers, we had bread and butter, endive salad, and taro fritters. For entree, we split a snapper dish served with a seafood pasta. For dessert, we had pears with a pumpkin sorbet and Stilton cheese. We really liked everything. I especially loved the appetizers -- the bread was warm and incredibly soft; it tasted freshly baked. This place is really a gem, and I want to go back again to enjoy food and/or drink when they have live music! read more
