There really isn't much of a creek in late October. Maybe we need to visit its full glory another time? For Rock climbers, to moderate hikers with different terrain (hike over rocks, side wall through sharp bushes, wall over a small creek). We visited late October, and suggest you to wear long sleeve, pants, sunglasses, hiking boots, and water. If you don't, expect sore toes from kicking/walking through rocks to cuts on your legs. Sunglasses is to protect your eyes from lots of branches sticking out. Luckily there wasn't much water in an area that we had to cross in the trail (assume during spring season, that area will wet our boots). This Pine Creek loop is pretty confusing since theres many areas where it feels like there is no loop? Ignore the word "loop" as I'm starting to think the beginning of the loop trail is not a loop until the end quarter as shown on Google maps? At end is a tiny section of a loop? - Recommend screen shot, have images ready or gps app ready before getting there. It's easy to get lost when it keeps saying loop and you think it'll bring you back to the car but not the case. Luckily, there were lots of friendly hikers to rock climbers there on a Sunday. 1. At Red Rocks Canyon (pay at fee station entrance). Red Rocks Canyon is Nevada's first National Conservation Area. 2. From Fee Entrance, it's a 25min one-way drive on the scenic driving loop. The parking sign will say Pine Creek Canyon. We came here because there was no parking at/to try Ice Box Canyon Trailhead (located a trailhead before this). Glad we tried that route. 3. Beginning terrain is in the sun, no shade, lots of dirt so you start to wonder why didn't I just hike someone's backyard in Vegas. It'll get better once you find whatever trickle left of the creek is. That's if you can even find it. If anything you'll definitely experience different terrain/scenery than just then normal Vegas dirt you're use to seeing everyday. 4. There's an area where the Pine Creek Loop splits. We went one way, and a helpful hiker told us to go backwards a bit to go down that path to find whatever trickle of the creek was. Rock climbers were there too. There were many times we couldn't find the next path. Bushes can get pretty narrow. Dress appropriately. Local elder hikers mentioned this was their favorite hike as locals. They were prepared with a backpack, two walking sticks for each hand, hiking boots, etc. Good luck!! We'll have to try this trail again to find this loop vs random one ways everywhere. We're new to Red Rocks Canyon and only experienced Calico Tank/Sandstone Quarry which is amazing. read more

In A Nutshell: -The Pine Creek Canyon trail is moderate trail that gives you 3 other options to branch off if you choose to do so to extend your wonderful hike. -If you just stick to the Pine Creek Trail it will be around 2.5 miles. -It will loop around the canyon where you will see all sorts of landscapes such as majestic mountain peaks, pine trees, scrubs, cactus & even a creek w/ water. -This trail is exciting enough to keep you on your toes so you will use your brain to navigate the not so flat/smooth terrain. Overall, this is a really peaceful hike especially if you start early in the morning before more people show up which is around 9am. read more

pretty fun "moderate" hike that's easy for anyone willing to do it. The first 0.38 miles takes you to a sign that tells you to prepare for a bit of rocky terrain but its a beautiful dessert landscape so you quickly forget about it. Then we ended up climbing in bushes and boulders and going off trail because I am an adventurous son of a B and had to back track to the trail. Eventually, we went off trail again to explore in the creek which was gorgeous! It felt like being in a mini forest hiding in the desert. After that we ended up at this cool little stream.. the sound of the running water is just so peaceful! Watch out for Velociraptors though, there is some chest high grass that makes you lean like a cholo to walk through it if you have wide shoulders like me. But then the sunflowers, those god damn baby sunflowers were so beautiful! Christ almighty I need to find a partner so I can take them in spring for a beautiful romantic hike after some rain! read more

When my sister and I went, we were able to encounter some water that flowed from the mountains. The tree leaves were fall colors, which was beautiful! We got to the trail at 630am, the sky was overcast and it was about 86 degrees outside. The hike was well marked and easy to follow with. We ran onto what seemed to be a small creek, not much water was running unfortunately it was just about completely dry. We completed the trail in 1hr and 15 minutes flat. Definitely a trail to do early in the morning or during the fall months if you're not used the heat. Quite honestly the most difficult part of the trail was the final .30 miles back to the parking lot lol. You don't notice the incline until you're walking back. read more

This is definitely a very fun and scenic hike! At the very end of the trail, you will be rewarded with a view of the waterfall! After over indulging in AYCE sushi, self control is not one of my strong suits, I came to this trail to burn some calories. The first part of this hike is super flat and super easy, then 20min in, the rocky incline section starts. Most of the trail runs along a stream, so there's always the option of digressing from the main road to explore nature, meet some wild animals. My gluts were definitely working hard as they were sore the next day. No pain no gain! read more

Pine Creek is an excellent trail at Red Rock Canyon that's good for the novice or experienced hiker. I like it especially for the variety the trail offers. You're completely in a desert yet you see water at least most of the. There are cactus plants everywhere and then you get near the old Wilson Homestead and you view a lovely meadow with grass and pine trees of various kinds. On the way into the canyon, you'll come to a junction with Dale's Trail. Notice the concrete and stone column on your left. This was the entrance to the Wilson home. This section of Red Rock Canyon was a Nevada State park but became part of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. After a short time, you'll arrive at the foundation of the homestead. Mr. Wilson only lived here for about 10 years before leaving and moving to Las Vegas. The house was burned by arsonists. When you're at the foundation, look at the beautiful meadow. In 1968, the movie "The Stalking Moon" starring Gregory Peck and Eva Marie Saint was filmed here. If you watch the movie, you can see Mescalito Peak and other Pine Creek formations on screen. After the foundation, the trail forks. Taking either fork is OK. The hike now loops around the back of the canyon below Mescalito Peak, the tall sandstone peak in front of you. To the right of Mescalito is Fern Canyon. To the left is a side canyon that goes to more hiking and rock climbing areas. While making this loop, you'll come upon shaded areas where you can have a snack, sit and rest for a bit, put your toes in the stream, or just have some conversation. Notice the tall Ponderosa pines in the creek area. After completing the loop, follow the trail back to your car. As you hike, keep your eyes open for animals. It was in Pine Creek where I saw the first bighorn sheep I saw while hiking. Happy hiking! read more

Let me start this review by stating that having Norm K. as your hiking guide guarantees that you will not get lost and that you'll learn a lot. He's the resident expert on anything and everything about hiking not only here in Vegas, but in other cities, too. When my pal and I wanted to check out this trail, I asked Norm if he wanted to join us. It turns out that Norm wrote a chapter about Pine Creek Canyon in a book about Red Rock Canyon: score! This trail is easy to traverse and you will see a variety of cacti, plants, rocks, and, yes, pine trees. Luckily, Norm knows the names of almost every plant and can identify the foot prints and poop of different desert animals, so every hike with him is an educational one. A great trail to enjoy the desert landscaping and a fabulous way to get some cardio in the great outdoors of Red Rock, add Pine Creek to your bookmark list if you haven't been yet. read more

I didn't hike the whole trail. Just walked down a bit to escape the crowds at Red Rock Canyon today. About 5 minutes down the trail and it's just you and some birds From the parking lot, if you look left, you can see some Ponderosa Pines. Supposedly they are left over from the ice age. read more

AhhhI loce the trails. I am becoming an avid hiker.Took to this trail on a Sunday around 12 pm. It is the last trail before exiting Red Rock park. Park and hit the trail directly from the parking lot. Beware that there is A LOT of horse poop, I understand that because there are probably wild horses and asses () running around there. What I can't understand is the dog poop, and graffitti. Why?! Ket's keep our natural parks beautiful and pick up your trash and dog poop! Ok enough about that, the trail is easy but extremely rocky. I didn't wear boots but I wish I had. We passed a lot of people, and they warned my friend and I that we wouldnt be able to visit the pools due to us having to hack past the plants. Umm yea ok! We mase if our business to make it and we did! Moderate up to 1 1/2 hour, Strenuous past that. read more

Yelp 100 Challenge * 23/100 Could never get enough of this trail. A group of girlfriends went up here this morning for a birthday hike to what turned out to be a warm, rejuvenating experience. This time, we continued west to the running stream (after the sign that says Pine Creek 0.9 miles), a spot I didn't get to see the last time I went here. Beautiful scenery. We lounged on the big rocks and spent a while just talking. Every adventure always opens up my eyes. Today, we saw a water strider, something I've only encountered through my biology textbooks the past months. Not a lot of birds today, sadly. Loved the lush forest as always and couldn't beat the meadow. Easy and great for beginners but also just as great for the experienced hiker who's looking into taking a break from rock scrambling and immersing themselves in the scenery. This is a popular trail and should you choose to hit it during a long weekend, expect a constant inflow of other fellow hikers shuffling behind you. For a quieter experience (and one with more birds), opt for the week days. read more

Not my favorite trail at Red Rock, but I could see it being a good beginner's trail. It's about 3 miles round trip and takes about 2 hours if you do the entire loop. There are opportunities to take different paths, some of which may end up nowhere. But if you stick to the main path, you'll go past the burned brush area, you'll see the foundation of an old house that used to be there, you'll see a creek, and you'll loop back around to the parking lot area eventually. The trail is pretty flat with the exception of a short area in the middle where you walk on rocks a bit. My girlfriends and I actually ran part of the trail since it was flat and open. Again, not my favorite but an easy way to spend the morning or afternoon. read more

This is probably my favorite place in all of the Redrock Canyon area. The first part of the hike is typical desert. Brush, cactus, rocks and dirt. Once you get into the canyon itself it's very lush and green. Be sure to check out the creek. It flows year round. I've been there in July and August and there was still water even at that hot time of year. If you were only going to do one hike in the Redrock area this would be the one I'd recommend. read more

Update. 4/23/17 My daughter & I just got back from a quick hike, if you stay to the left and go in a ways you'll get to the stream. Found a lovely spot with some beautiful dragonflies, tad poles & frogs. Still plenty of flowers. My perfect dose of springtime in Vegas!! read more

I've done this trail a couple times. It doesn't really have an end. There is a little waterfall towards the end? I don't know if it's the end, actually. And by "little" I mean about 3 feet of waterfall, if that. Along the way, you follow the creek. You can find frogs and butterflies and a grassy meadow. Very pretty. read more

Talk about a great time. This trail is one of the most rewarding ones at Red Rock. Pretty easy stroll through the desert on a varied pathway. The trail really does go through micro versions of each different kind of terrain you would find at the canyon. Short under 3 miles round trip. At the old creek settlers claim you can see wild burro and there is water in the creek, even this late in the hot season. The creek had some tiny pacific tree frogs hopping around. You even have many cross section trail options to extend your hike at the end of the old settlers house foundation. When you stay course past the foundation you will reach the marker that leads to the trail through the red sandy path into designated wilderness area. After that you will find a rocky decline which will lead you further into the Pine Creek Canyon. On the way back remember there is pretty nice incline to get back up to the parking area. That'll make you feel like you had a hike, for sure. read more

A very scenic location to hike especially if led by Norm K. who is a fantastic guide and area historian. it was a blast!

While on this trail after about half a mile, you don't realize you're in the desert. This trail is listed as moderate on the guide provided but I thought it was easy ; of course this depends on your fitness level. Just a couple of small rocks to get over and a mild incline/decline. If you want a nice walk this is a good trail. There was some running water (stream) which was nice to look at and my dog enjoyed walking thru it for a cool down. I was disappointed with the end on the trail, by the description I expected it to open up at the creek but it just ended with boulders. Be careful climbing at the end if you choose too because the dirt/sand is very loose and it's easy to loose your footing. This trail makes for a nice day out especially if you're tired if desert scenery. Enjoy! read more
