I normally drive through Willits between Eureka and Sacramento, but this time, I had to stop for the night. The Pine Cone had a decent rate, ($70), and good reviews, so I decided to check it out. I'm glad I did. Check in was very easy. The lady at the front desk checked me in. She was very polite. She advised me on how to access the wi-fi, and where my room was. I said thank you and went to my room. This is an old fashioned one story motel where you park right in front of your room. I went into my room and was very pleased. No, it wasn't a fancy room, but for what I paid, it was very nice. It had old fashioned wood paneled walls, the bed, (of course), a table, a large flat-screen TV with Dish network satellite, coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator, and an ac/heater. The room was spotless as was the bathroom. Other than the hot water taking an extra few seconds to kick in, there wasn't a problem. The bed was very comfortable, and it had enough blankets. I had a warm, good nights sleep. The only (minor) things that keep me from giving it 5 stars, is the fact that the wi-fi was not good. It was basically good enough to use facebook and email, but not to stream video. I was at the end of the motel, so maybe a room closer to the front desk would have been better. The only very minor other thing was that the motel doesn't serve any breakfast, but again, that's no biggie at all. The motel is across the street from Burger King, Mickey D's is a very short distance to the south, and a bit further to the south is the LumberJack restaurant, which does a *very* good breakfast. There are other good restaurants in Willits as well. Overall, I was very happy with my stay, and would stay here again with no hesitation. read more

Great value for a clean room, good pressure hot shower, and friendly service. We made the mistake of trying to find a hotel driving up through Mendicino County without a reservation on a weekend. EVERYTHING was full or closed as it was late. We got to Pine Cone Motel at 1am and by now were very weary and not too hopeful as we rung the bell at the night window. We obviously woke up the owners, but they amazingly opened the window 5 seconds later and immediately got us squared away with a room (hurray!). They were even nice enough to refund me in cash after they had already run my credit card when I asked for a different type of room. I wouldn't have known that there was a difference in room rate but was impressed by their honesty. Two things that keep me from giving 5 stars for the excellent price. The way the bed was turned out made me think it hadn't been cleaned after someone slept in it. Upon careful inspection, it did look clean, just turned out in a very odd way. Also, the room and bathroom were very clean but they didn't leave any soap or toiletries for us to clean ourselves with! Thankfully we had our own. read more

I'll start off by admitting that I'm a sucker for a classic motor lodge. While out on a motorcycle trip, I found the Pine Cone and decided to give it a look. I parked my bike out front and walked into the lobby. Without even ringing the bell, Sue approached the counter and welcomed me with a smile. I learned that she and her husband have owned the place since the early-'90s, and she was happy to give my choice of three different rooms. "Here," she said, sliding me the keys. "Look in each one and pick the one you'd like." All three were spotless, and I eventually selected one on the Western side. Upon entering, I discovered the room was well stocked with all the amenities I needed--and more. The towels were crisp, the soap was fresh and I was pleased to find a T.V. Guide (even though I never did turn it on). The rooms were classic yet clean, and I enjoyed being able to open up the windows to hear the sounds of a summer night. Overall, I'd recommend the Pine Cone Motel for anyone looking for honest and affordable accommodations in scenic Northern California. Check it out--you'll be glad you did. read more

Altho I've passed thru Willits many times, I've never found it necessary to stop, luckily an over night worked this time and I had the chance to stay at the Pine Cone Motel. This place has it all. It combines a vintage(ish) style with great owners. Suman, the owner, greets you at the front desk and makes you feel comfortable and at home even before you get into one of the wood paneled rooms in the horseshoe shaped compound. Once inside, the warmth of the wood finish combined with a super comfy bed make for a great stay. Each room comes with all the niceties of a well equipped room; microwave, mini fridge, heater/air conditioner, in-room phone, coffee/tea maker, large flat screen TV, dressing/sink area and even a tub/shower in the separate bathroom. The room I was in was non smoking and didn't have a hint of old smoker in it, and for you smokers, how many motels still even offer a smoking option? But what really puts this low budget motel (around $60 a night) at the top of the chart is the obvious love that the owners put into it. From the friendly and helpful check in to the always there if you need them attitude, the owners create a level of customer service rarely found in motels of this price range. And in a nod to old school motelery, there is not only a bible in the drawer, but also an english translation of the Bhagavad Gita, definitely worth a thumb thru for any spiritual seeker. Also in that drawer are a handful of maps and guidebooks to some of the many attractions available to visitors of Willits "Gateway to the Redwoods" California. Place is very well kept up for an older motel. Rooms are clean and have everything you need to be comfortable. My husband recently stood at this motel for 5 months for work and never had any issues. Pine Cone Motel What a little gem!! Pulled in, walked into the lobby, was greeted by a very friendly owner. He was so personal and welcoming. Got a room--they are all ground floor with a personal parking space. The king bed room I received was tiny, but perfect and quaint, and CLEAN!! So very CLEAN!! Bed was comfy, maybe would have liked one more pillow, but I'm sure if I had asked it would have been provided. The shower had pressure and there were plenty of crisp clean towels to use. They provided AC, I like the noise for sleeping--but it wasn't a loud motel. Everyone staying were kind with their "hellos" and "good evenings". I felt very safe!! Checkout was easy and again greeted by a female owner who went out of her way by saying Thank You for staying here. Just truly a delight. This is 5-stars for a budget motel. For less than $100, this is "as good as it gets". The rooms are very clean, bed is comfortable. The shower has very strong stream of good, hot water. Rooms seem to all have a mini-fridge. The owners (nice Indian people) are eager to keep guests happy and will respond quickly if you have any requests or need anything fixed. You're right on the main road (Hwy 101) in a good, safe location. Other guests seem to be nice and safe. They have WiFi (ask for password) and it works great. So, if you want a BUDGET motel in the Willits area, this is the place to go. You'll get excellent value for money. If you want a luxury hotel, go elsewhere and pay more. read more

For $65 a night, I'm not sure you can do better than this. As others have said, if you're looking for luxury - keep looking, and expect to pay a lot more. If you're looking for a clean, no-frills, convenient place to sleep - this is a great option. The room we stayed in was spacious and very dated, but also very clean. Heading north through the area recently, I decided to stop sooner than planned and began looking for a room around Ukiah. My first stop was one of the Motel 6's there, where I'd stayed numerous times and in the past, it had been one of the most affordable options. My name popped up in their system but it didn't matter because I turned and walked out the door when I heard the rate (which was twice what I'd previously paid there.) But before I got back on 101, I decided to call a spot I consider an old favorite - the Pine Cone Motel in Willits, right up the road. Yes, they had a room for me at a GREAT rate and yes, it would be there when I got there, even though I was asked only for my name. When I arrived it was like they were expecting me... SO welcoming! The room was clean and cozy and campy, like a country cabin, and had every thing I needed. I loved the convenient location too - gas, food, groceries, restaurants all close by. Next time, I'll just go straight to the Pine Cone! read more

Pretty awesome place to stay. The price is absolutely great. If your traveling to Mendocino/ little river, this motel is just an hour drive. During long weekends, it's a delight to find a place cheap and comfortable to stay in. The room is clean with kitchen amenities and well maintained. The service was great and has an after hours check in as well. Lots of parking spots and very close to restaurants and bars. I would certainly recommend considering this place is you are close to the coastal area. When prices are soaring high for other hotels near Mendocino, this is a fantastic option with just around an hour drive to the van damme state park / beach. The path to wilits is scenic with redwood forests and is also a shared attraction route for skunk train. read more

The rooms are in the process of being updated. New floors bathroom updated fixtures The ac is newer. So my aunt called to ask about cleaning procedures during COVID. She was not rude in any way and explained she knows sometimes hotels don't change blankets after every tenant but do change sheets. At 10-something p.m. on a Thursday night, my moving buddies and I needed a place to park our 26-foot U-haul truck and recover from an intense day of packing and loading. Not only did the owners offer we three guys a newly-refurbished room for a reasonable rate - with two new queen-sized beds - but they moved their own car to a space thus permitting us to park our truck in a very safe and spacious location within the motel inner grounds. The owner generously guided me in parking to a full stop. For sure, their accommodations, generosity and trust (we paid cash and were trusted without a deposit even though we were traveling with a housecat who stayed in the cab of the truck) will make the Pine Cone Motel an overnight spot my family and I will use in the future as we traverse the Redwood Highway. read more

I was too tired to keep going so I searched for a place in Willits. This is a nice little motel. It had nice clean sheets and new looking bedspread. There's a nice bath tub with good hot water. The lady at the desk was very nice and accommodating. I like having my car close to my room so I don't have to walk across the parking lot. I am a female traveling alone and I felt safe here. My Husband and I took a road trip to Willits over the weekend. The whole town has about 6 Motels. I already looked on Yelp and saw some bad reviews about bed bugs and that really freaked me out. This place was quiet, clean, (it even smelled like Pine-Sol when I walked in. We asked if we could see the room first, the owner said no problem. The price was reasonable, since we were only planning on sleeping for one night. He even gave us recommendations where to eat dinner. It was quiet, clean, the Wi Fi worked decent, the t.v. had a million channels to choose from premium to regular. I would definitely stay here again and recommend. read more

Really nice low-cost motel in Willits, "gateway to the redwoods". Squeaky clean, decent bed, great hot water high-pressure shower, relatively quiet when the front windows were closed. I'm not sure why hotels in Willits command the money that they do but finding one below $100 seems to be a challenge. Luckily, we stumbled on this place. It proved to be a good deal for the price ($80). The facility is old. Based on the decor, I would assume it was built in the 30's or 40's. The room was rather spacious and was covered with real wood throughout. It has that dark lodge feel to it. The bathroom did not have a tub. Only a stall shower. The good: Check in was efficient and easy. The shower had good spray. The room was clean. The bad: The mattress was squishy. The towels were thin and worn. The pillows were small and squishy. The shower head is more appropriate for those 5' tall or shorter. The TV is small. The ugly: I've got nothing. This place is a good value hotel. Nothing fancy. Not even breakfast in the morning. Great value for a budget motel! Very clean and quiet even though there were lots of cars when we arrived. We arrived at 11:30 pm but they are open 24 hours-I think I woke her up but she was very pleasant. Stayed in room 29 and loved that there was a bright spotlight right over our parking spot next to our room (our room was at the end of the building-no windows on that wall so the spotlight isn't an issue in the room) The room was excessively warm so I thought I'd leave the door and window open but I forgot my fan and the cool air wasn't coming inside. You know what, this place was surprisingly very nice. Very friendly night clerk, and not alot of, "homeless people be living in this hotel" vibe. Alot of hotels in willits feel like you chances of getting stabbed are high. Not this place though, I felt safe, and like a welcome guest.
