I stopped in for a drink last night with some friends and had a fantastic experience. We were greeted upon entry by two friendly employees, and one of them suggested that we check out the heated patio. That turned out to be a fantastic recommendation. The patio wasn't very crowded, so the ambiance was low-key. We'd already eaten, so we had planned just to order drinks. I had the heat of passion, and it was delicious. The bartender didn't skimp on the alcohol so I got a nice buzz off the first drink. My sister had the same drink, but she thought it was just okay. One of my friends had the manhattan, and the other one had an old fashion. They liked their drinks too. I wanted to try the tacos, so I ordered a beef barbacoa taco. It was a mini taco (for $5.25), which was unexpected. But i really liked it. I'd go back for more tacos. However, I was a little surprised that they didn't have any carne asada tacos. I don't recall our waiter's name, but he was pretty cool. He was friendly and very attentive. The atmosphere had a warm and cozy vibe. We really enjoyed ourselves and would go back for sure. I was running so late for a reservation last night and when I called to ask to push it, Jeremy was MORE than accommodating! He was the sweetest! I have never been here before and was blown away- not only is it super cute inside, all of the servers, hosts and even the barbacks were uber friendly! We were even given a little tour of The Alderman (the ultra swanky speakeasy) The drinks (casamigos marg) and food (fish tacos) were delicious! Fair prices and great ambiance. There aren't a lot of indoor/outdoor bar establishments so it nice to see one when we walked through the revolving door. Since there weren't any seats at the outdoor bar, we sat at the bar inside near the patio. The look and feel of the restaurant was simple but modern. We like this place because they have somewhat a long list of mezcal, delicious margarita and flavorful entrees. The only issue was the tacos. Had a good time at Pilsen Yards on a Saturday night! We came without a reservation around 9pm after having dinner nearby and found 2 free seats along the bar. Ordered a margarita and paloma and both drinks were good and spirit forward. We also wanted to try the tacos so we ordered 1 cochinita pibil and 1 fish taco to share. The cochinita pibil was tasty but could have had more of a kick and the fish was good as well. The highlight was the drunken tres leches. Super yummy and hot too sweet! We could also taste the rum and bourbon so it was a real treat! Be prepared for a loud atmosphere! The server did forget one of our drinks but they are packed at night! read more

The nachos were dry and hard, my daughter's breakfast burrito with chorizo had almost no chorizo it was mostly flavorless eggs, the burrito came with what we think was a potato but it was entirely burned and not edible so I can't confirm. Even the fries we ordered were dry and not warm... it's like everything we ordered was sitting out and it got warmed in the microwave. I also had a shredded beef taco which was just ok. After hearing some good things and living nearby, I decided to stop in for lunch with friends a couple days ago. Our host, as well as our server (Antonio, I believe he said his name was) were both incredibly friendly and helpful. The gentleman bussing tables? Definitely not so much. This bald guy in a grey shirt kept literally staring at the two women at our table and would pace back and forth while staring at them. The moment one of us set something down, he'd angrily rush over and snatch it away. When I, the first of four people, finished my meal, he came over and demanded the women get to-go boxes. He quickly came back and threw the boxes at the young ladies. I'm not sure if it was because they were African American, but this person was practically stalking them the entire meal and clearly had a visceral disgust for their presence. Everyone at the table was removed from the joy of the moment and we were all put on high alert waiting for this person to lash out at us/them. We quickly packed up and left, and swore to never return. I'm disappointed that a place that already sticks out a bit from the more traditionally cultural hub is also extremely unwelcoming and employs people that use intimidation tactics. I wish I could go on about the Chilaquiles and the Michelada, but we'll never be returning because the service from the busser completely outweighs the food. read more

Pilsen yards was fun! We tried both the restaurant and the speakeasy (the alderman-which we LOVED). The restaurant was okay. The food was more on an expensive end and the service was on a slower side. Also, the ice cubes in the water are too big for the pitcher and the water spills very easily when you pour. I did not have a pleasant experience with that. We got chips and guac for app and then I got mussels for my main dish. The mussels were recommended by our waiter but I thought they were okay. Not all were cooked and many of them still had rocks in them. Our experience at the speakeasy was phenomenal though. Every drink we had were top notch and so well priced too (~14 bucks). Our bartender was also so nice that he explained all the menu so thoroughly. I will definitely be returning for the speakeasy. The restaurant though I feel like I can have better and cheaper food elsewhere in Pilsen. read more

Pilsen Yards is a gem. It has been on my list for a while now and I am so so happy I finally got to give it a try. The ambiance here is very cool, their indoor and outdoor dining is very airy and open. We sat out doors but what was nice was it actually was enclosed on top (illusion ceiling) so we were able to enjoy outside on a rainy day without getting rained on. Truly a great concept and we loved the fresh air while eating. The service was fast and efficient which was great. Our server was Angelo and he was efficient, personable and also gave suggestions which we loved! We settled on the shrimp tacos, nachos, as well as fish tacos. This review is only for The Alderman! My wife had found this place randomly but it was not easy to find reservations (already a good sign!) Once we finally did, we were blown away. It is a very small and intimate space, so maybe only 12-14 people max, but the whole ambiance screams speakeasy. Interesting yet gorgeous artwork, dim lighting, excellent music choice (think BlackStar, Jurassic 5 etc.) Then comes Lance's menu. Lance is an artist and the drinks he has put together are phenomenal. It doesn't matter what you select, its going to challenge you and rock your world. AND if you have allergies, or prefer a different liquor, don't worry. For the first drink my wife said "I have a pineapple allergy, I like Vodka and nothing too sweet" and Lance goes "I got something." I can't even remember what he brought back but it was amazing. Something about Gin and raspberry but who cares, it was an incredible cocktail. The second drink she just said "surprise me" and another knockout! This was my first time here. I've walked by many times but never came in. The live music tonight was great, a very Carlos Santana vibe of music going on tonight. I think the live music really gave this place that fifth star. I tried 3 different tacos to sample their selection. The fish taco was great! Lots of fish tacos taste quite plain, it this one had good flavor. The almonds were an unusual but good addition. It had a good flavor and a savory sauce on top of it. The taco arabe was very delicious as well and had a decent portion of meat on it. The shrimp taco had a good mix of textures and tastes. The potatoes on that taco were cooked just right. This was a new palette of flavor combos as opposed to traditional tacos that I eat, but they were good. The tortillas weren't amazing, but they were okay. I'll come back again. read more

We spent Saturday night at Pilsen Yards with my in-laws. Had a great time. Ambiance is really hip with some really cool pieces from a local artist hanging on the walls. Had the mezcal margarita, which was pretty tart and not overly sweet. A refreshing take on the classic marg, and I really enjoy the smokiness mezcal adds to a drink. We ordered the tacos el pastor, nachos, ceviche, chips & salsa, and carrots el pastor. The food was all really really great. Super flavorful, well prepared and generous portions. The nachos were gigantically large. I think the surprise of the night was the carrots el pastor, which were juicy and had a great combination of acidity from the pineapple and floral notes from the cilantro. The radish slices added a great crunchy texture to it as well. Highly recommend. The only negative I have to add was the parking. The parking in Pilsen has become extremely difficult. This place advertises valet parking. We we pulled up, the valet told me they had zero spots and were no longer parking cars. I had to park six blocks away. And of course, when I walked back up to the restaurant, they were again parking cars. I would recommend just taking an Uber and skipping the valet all together. We just ordered apps and our favorite was the shishito peppers which are fried on the outside and filled with some light cheese inside. The flavor is muted but the spicy mayo pairing makes a world of a difference. We also got the nachos and the ceviche, which were so/so. The mando ceviche is super sweet which was a surprise. Nachos were OK but not enough crema and lacked sauce to tie it all together. I would definitely come back for drinks and when they have someone spinning on the weekends. This place is really just about the vibes! As soon as you walk in the place you're greeted by an amazing host staff! We decided to come here last night for a guys night out before we headed your way the Alderman. It was our servers first day and she did an amazing job. The food was cool. We just ordered tacos, and chips and salsa. The salsa was bomb. The tacos were a little on the smaller side. They were cool. My only gripe is that the food came out on one tray instead of separate trays, which isn't a huge deal, but a lot of the tacos looked the same so it was hard to differentiate. I really liked the atmosphere. The DJ was playing some bangers and was really keeping the energy high. read more

I have been wanting to try this new restaurant and their amazing outdoor patio seating. We came on a Sunday around 5pm. Everyone was following covid guidelines with masks and social distancing. The patio was completely open with free flowing air. We ordered the chips and salsa with guacamole, two house margaritas (which were very strong...just the way I love them), a sweet potato taco, a shrimp taco, the asada fritas , the nachos and the corn tamales. The food was so delicious and amazing. I absolutely loved the tamales. The green salsa that topped the tamales was delicious. My boyfriend loved his asada fritas. He said the steak was cooked perfectly and the orange tangy sauce that was poured on the bottom was tasty. We will definitely be coming back with friends to enjoy the food and drinks! read more

What a fun place! And surprisingly big too! I loved that they had a covered and heated outdoor patio. And the food and drinks were so good. For my drink I got the Something with Vodka (actual nam of the drink haha). It was my perfect drink honestly- fruity sweet from the lychee and very refreshing from the cucumber. If you're not a sweet drinks kind of person, you're not going to like this! To start we got the mango braised beef nachos which were delicious (beef was sweet from the mango which added the perfect flavor to the savory dish). I was able to try a fair amount of their tacos- fish, shrimp, pork and chicken. Fish was definitely my favorite, the sauce it came with provided such a nice spicy kick to it and so much flavor. Pork was my second favorite, very tender marinated pork topped with pineapple, which like the mango, provided the perfect amount of sweet to the taco. Next was shrimp which was good but wasn't super unique and my least favorite was the chicken taco, which was still pretty good just not as great as the others. I definitely want to come back! They have a vegetarian taco with sweet potato and cauliflower that I really would like to try as well. And obviously need to come back for that fish taco. I also really want to try their tres leches next time! Service was amazing, definitely very loud and busy at night if you're looking for a bustling place. However 30 minutes into our service we had the bus boy/table service guy come pick up empty plates twice and in one instance he bumped into me while reaching over out of nowhere to grab a plate and in another instance he almost hit my partner on his face as we was retiring the plate. He looked upset or angry about something but we ignored it. When he came around the third time we asked him politely to PLEASE be careful when reaching across from behind us and as he started walking away he started arguing with us and suggested that "we take this outside" I was like ?!?!??! And we asked him to please leave, us alone and he attempted to walk back two more times and had to shout to him leave us alone. Immediately after the incident we spoke with the manager named Rico who apologized explaining that at Pilsen Yards they try to treat everyone like family and that his staff's behavior was unacceptable and would be addressed. We paid a tab of $140 plus 20% tip as everything was great until the incident. We ended up leaving hungry without even getting to order our main meal. Evening was ruined and everyone was pretty upset. This is the first time this has ever happened to us at a restaurant. Maybe the guy was having a bad night, but it left a bad taste and negative first impression. read more

After the city anticipating the opening of this place, they finally opened. As hard as it can be to get a reservation, it's definitely worth it. The outdoor space still provides plenty of cover and heated lamps. Everything is connected and the space is huge, which is perfect for the social distancing that has to occur. Be careful if you get sat on the outdoor patio area, that you aren't sitting by where the draft comes in all the way at the back. It's tolerable but the draft is not for the faint of heart. If there is space elsewhere, they definitely don't mind moving you. I got to try the fish and chicken taco and they were both delicious. The fish taco came with a bang, bang sauce that is definitely on the spicy side; it had my nose running! Regardless, the flavors were on point. I wish I could've tried their tres leches cake that's made with more than one liquor but wasn't able to. The menu is currently super limited, but I'm sure as time goes on, they will expand it. Gentrification is a problem and when you open a Mexican Restaurant in the former home of a longstanding family establishment, it is expected that your staff should be able to correctly pronounce some of the words on the menu. Pros: Outdoor seating that is still partially enclosed and away from the street. Minimal outside noise (cars honking etc.) Great music and delicious food. There is a clear rooftop, so even on days when it is raining, you can sit outdoors and be covered. The patio is also heated, so you can still enjoy the outside area on chilly days. The staff here are amazing, they must go through a phenomenal training program. The new layout is nice; feels much more open and yet cozy. Not Yets: Limited menu, but what they do have, it's fantastic! The music can be a little too loud some evenings, but that may be just my preference. A loud enough volume to hear but not too loud that we have to yell over the music. (Don't get me wrong, I miss the club days too, just not at dinner at 7 pm) Be sure to give yourself time to find parking or do valet. Also, make reservations at least a week in advance. I like how they keep up with best practices for all safety. I would come here often when it was Monnie Burkes, and their food menu was seasonal and had a variety to choose from. My husband and I stopped by here for brunch while in the area. I made a reservation ahead of time, but you probably could easily get a table as a walk in if your group isn't too big. I love the patio area and I see why it is a popular destination on warm days. Cadillac Margarita (10/10)- Perfectly balanced and refreshing. Queso Fundido (8/10)- This was good, but could have benefited from a little bit more spices. Huevos Rancheros (9/10)- I really enjoyed this brunch dish. I've been going to Pilsen Yards since they opened their patio in the middle of the pandemic. Its been one of my favorite places for brunch, lunch & dinner for 2 years!! Additionally, I love the fact that they support local Chicago artists & local art businesses. When you enter the restaurant it's hard not to miss the amazing Roger J. Carter piece curated by Artist Replete. A portrait made out of toy soldiers. They even hosted Rogers solo show at their space in collaboration with Artist Replete years ago. I love how this place transforms into a gallery once in a great while. The service here has always been great too. The owners Paul & John who I've met are incredibly hard working business professionals, very humble too. It's not surprising this place took off & became such a unique venue. Last but not least, check out the Alderman on the weekends. It's a speak easy inside the restaurant with a different cocktail menu & much more intimate layout. Perfect for date night!! read more

I've visited this restaurant a few times now, and I have to say their drinks are delicious! The pisco punch is definitely my favorite. As for food, this is a hipster place so don't expect authentic Mexican cuisine here. That being said, the food is delicious albeit a bit overpriced, but the one thing definitely worth trying are the mussels (not pictured). The mussels are flavorful and plentiful, so I recommend ordering it for the table since it was a lot to finish between 2 people. The shrimp ceviche was disappointing. It was fine -- the shrimp was fresh but there wasn't a whole lot of flavor going on. I wished there was more spice, but it was interesting to add peanuts. I've never had peanuts in ceviche before but it was a nice texture addition. My last qualm about the ceviche is that you only have 4 fried plantains as your chips. I would recommend asking for chips on the side because the 4 plantain chips will not be enough. Overall, the ambience of this restaurant is nice and I can totally see myself bringing friends here in the future. read more

Very cool spot! I had never been to the Pilsen area before, so this was a fun place to experience. We had a reservation of six but last minute changed it to 8, and they were accommodating for us. The decor is really cool and hip--we sat on couches to eat which was a fun, lowkey way to dine. I ordered a Mezcal drink which was pretty good. We got a few appetizers and each ordered some tacos. Overall the food was delicious! The waitress mentioned things come out fast, but the speed of this food was the fastest I've ever seen! It definitely could have been timed a bit better, but our waitress told us it was her first day so I assumed she was still working on it. We were pretty impressed with Pilsen Yards! The one major con is parking is super difficult on the weekend, especially with the snow. Other than that, we had a great experience. I made a patio reservation in advance and was seated right away. The patio is heated and very warm! Didn't need to keep a jack on or anything. The menu is a little limited but there's street tacos, burger, and a few other options. Based on reviews, we ordered the nachos with mango braised beef and one of each tacos (except vegetarian). The nachos were great! Would def order again. All of the tacos were pretty tasty too. My favorites were the shrimp and pork. The fish was good too but does have a bit of that fishy taste just as a warning if you're not into that. The chicken was good but nothing to write home about. I moved to the area just 2 months ago and had stopped here once for a drink with a friend. That first visit was lovely and our server told me to come back on neighborhood night. This happens on the first Wednesday of every month where residents and those who work in Pilsen (and two other nearby neighborhoods) get 25% off their bill. I just had to come back. Let me tell you I loved it! I came by myself, and was greeted with such a joyful welcome that really set the mood for the rest of the evening. I sat at the bar which was almost packed but the bartenders were so attentive all around. My favorite part was how friendly and playful they were to one another. I ordered the tortilla soup, since it was a bit chilly, and the chicken enchiladas. While I waited for the food, the person next to me stroke up conversation and we had a lovely time chatting. The food came, and gosh I wasn't expecting the soup to be so big but golly as it delicious. The enchiladas had a tough contender to beat and while I'm not sure they did, they were on par on flavor.
