So if you like manly minimalism in a formerly industrial space (think pipes painted black and made into things, like tables) come on by. Had a great visit here over the weekend with my SO! We got a seat on their patio and the weather was great, so it was such a fun time. The patio is pretty large with a lot of seating. The only downside is the blue line is right next to it, so it gets pretty loud every time the train comes by, but it's not terrible. The inside space is also quite large and looked really nice. To drink, we both ordered flights and all of the beers were so good! My favorite was the lavender IPA and his was the pickle beer. The pickle beer was surprisingly good, and super interesting. I really loved the lavender IPA, it had the perfect amount of lavender flavor. You order and pay for everything online, which is convenient so you don't have to go up to the bar or wait for someone to come around to you. Pilot Brewing has amazing beer flights! You can get 4 tasters of their beers on tap for $14. The other day I tried a "Summertime Chai" which was a wheat ale and black tea. I also tried 2 Hazy IPAs which were my favorite (Fifty-Five Rocks and Green Mountains Only) and a sour (Goa). I came here on a weeknight to catch up with some friends and celebrate a birthday. I called ahead to check about a possible dessert + candle situation, and they were super nice about it. They ran out of candles, but did say they could add a dessert once I opened a tab, and brought out a lovely Samoa pastry with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream. To order, you scan a QR code on your table. This includes ordering a carafe of water and specifying the number of cups. You can place your order(s) while keeping the tab open and then close out via the online app once you're done. Everything was really easy and felt covid-safe, meaning we weren't overly interacting with staff when we didn't need to, and their tables and seating arrangements were nicely spaced apart. The first time I came here was pre-pandemic and it was a little different then (I'm specifically remembering a cheese & charcuterie board on the menu that is no longer available.) A lot has changed since then, but they still have nice staff, cozy sofas in different sections of the restaurants, and really good beer! But now during Phase 5, you can still get plenty of sandwich options, a big chunky pretzel, and beer cheese nachos with the option to add bbq chicken. Parents, they have a kids menu, how cool is that? They also offer non-alcoholic beer, hard kombucha, and other options like cold-pressed juice and sparkling tea. A little something for everybody. Pilot Brewing is a great place to grab some drinks, unwind, and it feels like a chic minimalist living room with an attached outdoor seating area. My friends and I were still hungry after snacking on nachos, so we walked right across the street to grab ramen at Ramen-San (and some other patrons from Pilot Brewing had the same idea). I have always wondered what Pilot Project was. I happened to be at a Yelp elite event last week and they were serving ROVM hard koubucha. It was there when I learned what Pilot Project was. Today was my lucky day to give them a try for launch. My friend who lives across the street suggested we go there for their launched special. The lunch special runs from 11:00 a.m. To 1:00 p.m. period It includes an entree and a beer for $15. I thought that was a really good deal. They also have Indoor and outdoor diving. This location is very close to the blue line so be prepared for some noise if you are sitting outside. I enjoy their ordering system what you could do from the comfort of your table. It was very simplistic and easy to navigate. For lunch I end up getting the club sandwich with jalapeno chips, adding pickled onions. I found that the sandwich was good quality good size and ended up taking half home to eat later in the day. Yeah. For my beer I got a cider with a pretty high ABV percentage. The new winter cabana's for covid are very well done too. The issue is everything is like a C+. Decent beer, decent food, decent service but nothing wowed me. Nothing makes me want to come back for sure. Although the gigantic patio space looks promising for a visit in the summer. I sat in one of their new winter cabanas built on top of their large patio. It's well done, good to fill out the space if you have a larger group. Although, it only has one tiny heater...can't sit out there in frigid temps. The QR code ordering makes sense but I wish platforms like Toast would improve their payment process by partnering with pay pal, Apple Pay or click to pay. Putting in your credit info every time is an annoyance. I got two flights of IPA's and the beer cheese nachos. Good not great. Also when I first got there, I was standing out front alongside many other people just waiting for the host to pay attention. She was clearly doing something at the bar with all of us in plain view. I always end up double checking other reviews when I give a review that "goes against the grain." So, yeah, I have looked at others and simply have a different opinion. The primary problems with this place are its operations relating to customer service. First off is the reservation system. Making the reservation is when the first issue comes up. The reservation itself is $10, and it DOES NOT GO TOWARDS THE BILL. It is also is NON-REFUNDABLE. There are few, if any restaurants that have this practice. Most restaurants, you just call up and reserve a table. The place was mostly empty when I arrived, and the overwhelming majority of tables were open. I could have walked in and saved myself the time and money of making a reservation. In essence, management is financially PENALIZING CUSTOMERS WHO TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE A RESERVATION, WHICH WAS MADE TO ASSIST THE RESTAURANT. Below is a screenshot of their very strict policy of table reservations. The next customer service operational problem they have is simply ordering food or a drink. You have to put your credit card information down in order to see the menu. After scanning the QR code on the table, the user has to enter their credit card info just to see the menu. You are automatically charged, albeit temporarily (with automatic tip, regardless of your experience and/or opinion). Below is a screenshot of the screen requiring credit card information just to see the menu. Thus far in your dining/brewery experience, you have already been charged twice and NOT EVEN ORDERED! Next comes the menu itself. There is very little food selection. Just a some sandwiches, nachos, a pretzel and the kids menu. So, selection is extremely limited. Remember, you have been charged twice already just to see this extremely limited menu. I give it two stars because it has a decent beer selection and the ambiance and cleanliness of the place is decent. But overall, it's NOT WORTH all the money and credit card charges and/or info just to get a table and see a menu. Their practices are highly arrogant, and that is highly off-putting for a brewery. Wow, what a pleasant place to come grab a beer. This is a great spot to come with friends and have a variety of beers to try. Really cool concept for multiple brewers to come together and have a shot of their beers being sold to the public. I will say, I was in love with the Spanish tea IPA! Omg, so incredible!! The house club, not so much but I appreciate they have a limited menu available. The sandwich was fine, but it was something I totally could have made at home for a fraction of the price. Not sure what the inside looks like but the parking lot of tables was nice...until the train comes. Holy smokes it's loud, long, and frequent. Im a little nervous to come back when the train is running more frequently because it was super terrible to stop your conversation, and calm down all the dogs! Lastly, appreciate them taking precautions, masks, sanitizer, temp checks, but the requirement to have your mask on at the table when the waitress comes up is a bit much. U sit where ever, order and pay at the table. It was a bit of a wait after ordering our flights. I tried all 3 hard kombuchas which was interesting but I think I'll stick w my regular kombucha. Our fav beer was the Courtesy of Copenhagen (fruited pale ale) and the Lavendar IPA (surprising so good!). I didn't get to try any of there coffee drinks so I'll definitely be back- think they have flights for this too. My highlight beers were Narrow Paths, a nitro ESB, and Cochin, a lemongrass saison. However, I wish I got more information about the beers and the breweries, which the service-model prevented. Quantity: Flights came with four 5oz pours. Value: $14.50 for a Flight Ambiance: Pilot Project Brewing is located near the Bucktown neighborhood in Chicago. It is brewery incubator with a large industrial space. They have a pretty massive outdoor beer garden with about a dozen picnic tables all with umbrellas. Inside they have an assortment of seating with high-tops, tables, bar areas, and couches. Several murals can be found throughout the space and lots of different merch is on sale. Music played quietly in the background. Crowd: A small crowd on Monday afternoon, though the few people there looked set up with work stations. The interior of this place is absolutely adorable and extremely inviting . The staff was super friendly and willing to help figure out which beers would work best for you (I got the flight and had them "surprise me" but they talked me through each option). They have a solid rotation of options (most of which are not your traditional beer options including the kombucha - which is 100% worth a try). The outdoor seating is massive and they have someone out there taking orders if you need so you don't have to go indoor to the bar. Only after ordering did I realize that this whole place is about experimental beers from other breweries, not their own stuff. This is a cool concept to get some beers from places you normally wouldn't find. Of the items I ordered, liked the "Easy Afternoon" APA from Histrionic, and the "Things We Don't Say" IPA from Odious Cellars. Obsessed with Pilot Project Brewing. There were so many great things here that its hard to focus on just one thing. First, the brewery incubator concept is amazing allowing us the opportunity to sample beers from different local breweries under one house. Including selling individual swag from each brewery. It was not only fun, but it was great so support that local brewer who generates income here with the hopes of opening their own brewery. Second, the space was fantastic! I spent a week in Chicago and came here on my last day. If it was day one, I would have worked from here most days drinking coffee in the a.m. and sampling beer in the afternoon. The space is beautiful, functional, innovative, comfortable with plenty of places to set up and work with many spots to plug in your laptop. Third and most important! The beer! I had beer from three different breweries. All were fantastic! I was able to sample different styles, from different breweries with great suggestions from the beertender. I LOVED the lager from Azadi Brewing. My friend how doesn't favor beer had a variety of options from Hard Kombucha to Cider. The cider from Eris Brewery was really good as well. There is something for everyone here. As a bonus, they had really good food. I had the Turkey Club and it was really good. Go for lunch at ask for the lunch special and you get a sandwich, chips and pickle plus a beer for $15! Super good deal! All order was done online and within a minute I rec'd my beer of choice. Super great place if you want to get some work done in the morning/afternoon and then grab some drinks after! I checked out this cafe around 2PM on a weekday and there were tons of open seating and lots of big tables open. The ordering system is super convenient - you just order on your phone and they bring your drink out to you. I got a latte and it was great! The menu is so cool, lots of beer and nonalcoholic options. I did not get any food but the table next to me seemed to have gotten the pretzel which looked HUGE and really realy good. I will be getting that next time:) The space is huge, lots of room to sit and the noise level is not too loud. I will definitely be coming back with my laptop to get some work done! read more
