I love this studio so much. I had been here a few times many years ago when I lived in Echo Park. I was so excited to see that they had moved to the high desert. I immediately signed up for the lovely two week deal and got to try each instructor; everyone is wonderful and very tentative to detail, I have never felt looked over in any of my classes. The studio is clean and very inviting, the class sizes are small and they have everything you could possibly need to comfortably perform Pilates at any level. This was the worst Pilates class I have ever taken I'm actually really upset that I chose to try it. The instructor, Cameron, needs to go back to school, he has no idea how to cue people and was getting frustrated that we were not doing exercises all together. That's on him and how he cues which he doesn't know how to, he takes 5 minutes just to say arms by your side feet hip width on the bar. He was visibly mad at the end of class, he stopped teaching and went to his phone, a girl was asking if we were done because he just stopped teaching. I walked out. He did not ask anyone if they wanted to be adjusted or if they were OK with being touched instead he would just come over and dig his fingers into you as hard as he could. I finally had to say I don't like being touched which honestly I don't mind being adjusted but his adjustments are forceful and painful. He was teaching Pilates positions differently than they are actually supposed to be taught, just to "change it up and trick the mind" he said, but that's actually really unsafe. He's yelling at me repeatedly saying "lift from your back, your back,your back!" I am not an idiot which is how he makes everyone try to feel, how about he narrows down what he means by saying which muscle in the back instead of poking my back over and over while yelling. Lord poor guy, he has no idea how to describe anything precisely or briefly. Go anywhere but here unless you like being yelled at by a psycho who takes 10 minutes to set up a exercise. Not a workout at all and negative energy from him. ** UPDATE ** It's 5pm this class was at 8am, I am now having shooting pains up and down my arm and neck, this guy was lifting my neck up about 5 inches higher than my flexible comfort, this guy really needs to stop adjusting people, he has no respect for where a person is in their training. He even said at one point that it was in my head thinking I couldn't do something. I wish I had walked out when he took 10 minutes to set up the very first exercise and said we could decide if we wanted our headrest up or down during bridging. HEADREST IS DOWN DURING BRIDGING, GET A CLUE, GO BACK TO SCHOOL, STOP HURTING PEOPLE. read more

This place is an absolute gem. I started doing Pilates last year to whip myself into shape for my wedding, and now I'm thoroughly hooked. I adore Pilates & Arts and have completely fallen in love with pilates thanks to Tannis and her team! Tannis, the owner, is a gifted instructor herself; she's energetic, whimsical and encouraging. She just bubbles over with energy. Like...I think she might be a wizard. She's kind of magic. Her mat class on Friday morning is one of the highlights of my week. The space itself is awesome. Lots of light, high ceilings--very clean and bright. Add in some wonderful, warm instructors, beautiful equipment, attentive instruction, cool local art--and you've got Pilates & Arts! I'm a huge fan of both reformer and mat pilates, and would wholeheartedly recommend both here (as well as the many superfun Branch classes). I know, I know; "Pilates is expensive..." But this place? It's worth every single penny. You're investing in your body and well-being, and supporting a really special local business in the process. You get so much more than you pay for with this place. You won't be disappointed! (And the best part? You get a great bod in the process.) *A little advice for beginners: before jumping into group reformer classes, get yourself acquainted with the process and equipment by doing a few private classes first. I love this studio so much. The ballet and Pilates classes are amazing, and the group exercise unlimited monthly rate is quite affordable. Both reformer and Mat Pilates classes are an excellent work out. The teachers are attentive, give lots of modifications and create a very welcoming environment. In regards to mat Pilates, Amanda's classes are hard but paced so that anyone can follow along. Elizabeth's classes are challenging but use lots of fun props. Stephanie will teach you about the history of Pilates and how your own body works (or doesn't work) and Tannis (the owner) is a hoot and a half and will have you laughing and thoroughly entertained while you work out to her electric taste in music. Ammo and Kimi do an excellent reformer classes if that is your style too. I am sure all the other teachers are great, as well. Tannis finds the best people who are well trained in classical Pilates and really care that their clients are doing the exercises properly. Ballet with Amanda is the reason I started attending this studio. Her mixed level class is such a treat. It can be difficult if you do know what you are doing but she teaches to the class, so some things will be easy to get right away and other things will be harder. I have learned so much from attending her class for a year, not just about technique but about the musicality and math of ballet too! She has recently started teaching a basic ballet class which I also recommend to anyone just starting out on ballet or anyone who wants to perfect their technique. Parking is always easy to find on the street. There is no front person so you have to be responsible for buying classes online and signing up. The atmosphere is very laid back and there is a wonderful mix of (mostly) women who attend the studio. Classes are never crowded and people learn your name quickly. I was hesitant to write this review because I didn't want to share this secret. This is the best Pilates studio I've ever been to. I came to pilates & arts because I bought a Groupon and thought I'd try it. I haven't had much luck finding a solely pilates studio in LA that I like. Too many are some kind of fusion classes, and I like more traditional pilates. I hit the jackpot here. The group classes I took involved some mat work at the beginning and end, but we spent most of the time on the reformer, which I love. It really adds an extra layer of fun for me. Each group class felt more like a semi-private since you can only have as many people as there are reformers - 5 I think. About half the classes I took had no more than 3 people, though. The instructors are all great with their own personalities and styles. They're all very attentive and really work with you to correct your technique. This studio also offers a ton of dance classes ranging from ballet to zumba and other practices, but I haven't taken them. The location is really lovely, right in the heart of Echo Park in a primarily residential area. There isn't a parking lot, but street parking was never really a problem. read more

I love Pilates and Arts in Echo Park. I am what you call an ADD exercise enthusiast, meaning that I will get really excited about exercise for about a month before slacking off completely. Ever since I started doing Pilates at the end of May, that's changed completely. I come here 4 times a week, and I'm never bored. I feel really good, and my body is changing in ways I didn't even think were possible! (HI ABS) The teachers are amazing, Tannis the owner is a magical fairy who will keep you entertained even when she's pushing your abs to the max. Tannis is such a joy to work with that I had to write her a review, even if I haven't finished my sessions. My first session was with Alexa, but because I got the start time wrong and was 30mins late, I wasn't able to attend :( That first night, the curtained were shut and the lights were very dim...seemed like a very serene class. I guess everyone has their own style of teaching. The next day, I attended Tannis' class and the lights were turned on (not too bright or dark). More my style. My friends who attended the class the day before also enjoyed Tannis' class more. Tannis was very hands on, corrected us, and cracked me up. Sometimes you need a little bit of humor when you're doing hard exercises to keep you motivated. The location of the studio is pretty easy to get to and close to the 2 and 101 fwy. Stick with Sunset, Scott, and Echo Park Blvd to get here if you're afraid of heights :) I took a bunch of small random streets the first night and driving through all of Echo Parks' hills was a bit scary for me. I've been taking reformer and mat Pilates with Tannis for the last month and have been loving every minute of it! The studio: super grounded neighborhood studio with a beautifully relaxed vibe. I love taking a class on my day off and then eating at one of the cute little restaurants nearby. I can only speak for Tannis's class, the work can be intense but she has such a laid back and someone used the word whimsical which is a great way to describe her! If you want to feel like you're working out like a celebrity, Pilates & Arts is your studio. I met Tannis at Yogala, where we both teach. The first time I met her, I was wowed by her perfectly toned arms, and told her, "I want Tannis arms!" About a week ago she opened Pilates & Arts (next door to Yogala). My husband and I went in for a partner session this morning, neither of us having taken a reformer class before, and had such a fun workout. Using the machines is a completely different experience from a mat class. Since your body is supported, alignment is easier, helping you focus on working the core and other muscles. Tannis is a friendly, knowledgable teacher. Her instruction is clear and masterful, so much so that the hour passes quickly. The space is beautiful, the sort of place you would drive twenty miles to get to. I'll definitely keep working with her. It's pricier than a mat class, but worth every penny. Who knows, maybe in a few months I'll get those "Tannis arms," or at least Gwenyth Paltrow arms. read more

Anastasia is amazing for personal sessions her attention to detail of posture and healing from injuries is super on point. I've been coming here since they opened 4 years ago 3-4 times a week. I love it! I've had classes with all the teachers and they are all wonderful and unique with different and a range of techniques to suite all types of regimes. They also offer many other classes (ballet, contortion, gyrokenisis,jump board) and have art events and parties every two months featuring local artists and bands. I don't know that words could describe what this place has come to mean to me, it's not just a place to work out. It's a part of the echo park community and it's that sense of kinship and community that has made me feel as if I have found my "third place". Tannis, the owner, is amazing-- she's set out to create something meaningful, making an impact on our neighborhood and I think it really shows in the space.There is very much a trickle down effect that stems from Tannis, herself and is shared by all of the instructors. The studio itself is clean and has a cozy and inviting energy about it. I come here for pilates and pilates in the traditional sense, which I prefer to the fad classes that have been popping up. My usual instructor was out on maternity leave so I had at least 5 other instructors as substitutes and loved every single one of them. I also take cardio kickboxing with Scott Shinick, which is one of the branch classes. I never would have imagined that I would love this class. I am a wimp when it comes to working out but Scott's energy is amazing, he's encouraging and positive but pushes you to exceed your own expectations-- it's my favorite class that I take, now. I never rate things on Yelp. So that is telling of how deeply I feel about the staff and this studio. Tannis, the owner, lives and breathes this studio; it's her passion to blend many forms of movement and art and therapy! Amanda, Cati and Jasmine, the main dance teachers, were the reason I started to begin with, and I hardly ever miss a week of their classes. To find adult ballet and modern that embraces those that aren't dancing hours a day, have taken a lengthy break from it, or are rather new is rare. But to also cater to those of us that are trained and push us all in one class is a miracle! Their spirit is a gift, and I relish the days I get to go to class and let go of my work and disappear into their teachings. The pilates instructors are highly skilled and focus on individuals in group classes in a way I've never seen. They each have extensive training, especially in classical styles, and form, which yields much better results, and yet they each have very different styles. Also a major bonus when trying to produce results and surprise your body. Jumpboard classes are offered often, which doesn't seem to be the case at most studios. And the space! On this block owned by a well-known and incredible ceramicist, there is a fantastic yoga studio, hair salon, art and artists. If you're not in Echo Park, make the trek. I went in recovering from a very painful knee injury, and she helped me strengthen all of the muscles needed to take the tension off my knee. I noticed a huge difference from just one session a week. Great place! I've tried reformer pilates at my gym and wasn't particularly satisfied. What I love about Pilates & Arts is that there are several instructors you can work with. They each have their own style and it was fun being challenged. Tannis is very aware of your strengths and limitations. Dylan really targeted those problem areas. Eric is CHALLENGING, but well worth it. And Katie incorporates a lot of variety. I'm sure the others are great too. I love the group sessions, but you can also signup for private ones. Since we started, both of us have noticed a significant difference in our postures, energy levels, and strength. I always feel safe and all of the instructors know how to make exercising fun! Love this place because first and foremost it's literally in my front yard but also because of the teachers and the amount of attention I get when I come in. I've tried a couple different places in this area and I have to say that the instructors here are very much so into correct form and helping you heal all the way thru. Bravo to Tannis and Pilates & Arts in Echo Park. I've taken mat & reformer Pilates from Tannis for years. I haven't done it for a while due to knee surgery. I've put on weight and let my body go. But now I'm back and so happy that Tannis has her own studio. Even though it's a distance, I make the drive because I trust Tannis with my body. She'll help me get back into shape without hurting myself. Tannis has been teaching exercise and body awareness for many years. She makes exercising and body workouts fun. I have taken reformer, mat, gyrokenisis and tai chi classes at Pilates & Arts Echo Park and every instructor is as thorough, patient, well trained, consistent and warm as the next. I've taken Tannis, Alexis, Walter, Stephanie and Cameron and I look forward to experiencing the other instructors as well since Tannis is apparently very careful and cautious in whom she hires. I have been coming for about 6 months now and I feel the results in my posture, plus I notice a firmness in my core and an overall sense of body awareness and well being I hadn't before experienced. I've tried about 6 other pilates studios (through GroupOn) and Pilates & Arts is by far the best! Many of the other studios have instructors who just count the repetitions and don't individually spot the students or pay the attention to form that they do in the group classes here. In addition, the studio itself is spacious, clean, and inviting with beautiful and unique original paintings on the walls that add to the brightness and overall welcoming atmosphere. I'm almost reluctant writing this since a part of me wants to keep this great 'find' a secret, and at the same time I want to 'give back' by getting the word out, since they have given so much to me. The myriad of instructors each bring a unique energy to the practice. The owner, Tannis is amazing and full of life. Her classes are fun, silly, and energetic. Anastasia is precise, sweet and takes time to nurture individually. Dylan brings a cool sensitive flare with attention to detail to her classes. This place is fantastic. It's easy to go and the workout is great. I've been going for two months and i'm already seeing a big difference. I was new to Pilates began with the $150 special for three private lessons, which I would recommend to anyone starting out. After that I had a seamless transition into group classes with all of the different instructors, where I am really enjoying all of the variety. Each instructor has their own approach and technique which is a lot of fun. I highly recommend trying them all. All in all the practice has a really positive and focused vibe. The whole studio emanates Dance, Art, and Pilates - which are the owners three favorite things. Some special magic happens when a small business owner throws all of her passions into one place. I am the founder of a dance company and was looking for a studio to have rehearsals at in the local area and was referred to Pilates and Arts by a friend. The studio is absolutely perfect for us to dance in with a full wall of mirrors and a great sound system. It's a breath of fresh air to find a place that feels like home when trying to be creative. I second everything said by the first reviewer -- also named Joan. I met Tannis at a mat class at the South Pasadena YMCA and was hooked on Pilates. But I realized I wasn't quite doing the exercises with the right muscles. I have had two of three individual classes on the reformer and loved them! Tannis is very careful with whatever weaknesses you have, teaches you awareness and makes it seem so easy. And the time does pass quickly. I love this place. I have been searching for a place to work on my hours for pilates teacher training after a horrible experience with Core Conditioning, so I've been taking classes in the Sliverlake/Los Feliz/LA area to get a feeling for where else I'd like to try. When I saw how cool and artistic this place looked from the outside, I almost got hit by a car and the inside is even better - its an ultra creative space with a personal touch. I took one great advance reformer class, which really worked me out. Then I came back for a Latin Dance class on a saturday morning (and may I add some of the cool quirky places to eat on the street make for a lovely saturday morning) and then I asked to rent one of the reformers. It was great to get advice from Tannis and be able to pick her brain. She rents out all the reformers to teachers and people training - this is something that is hard to find! I'm really excited to have a found a place where I feel like I can talk about pilates and the training process and take some great classes. read more
