When I first moved to Joshua Tree, each morning as I watched the sun rise from my bed I would hear a faint "crunch crunch," "crunch crunch crunch" indicating activity outside my house, which is situated in the mostly silent desert.
And every morning, without fail, a beautiful dread-locked girl with a body-that-won't-quit would walk briskly past my window. "DAMN," I would think (and still think), "she must be a yoga instructor." And then I would think "Damn, I should get up and walk too!"
Then I would fall back asleep for another hour or so.
Flash forward to last Friday, which was my first foray into local high desert Yoga a la Joshua Tree. Instant Karma Yoga is located along Highway 62 in the heart of Joshua Tree proper. It's tucked inside what is the most beautifully constructed cluster of buildings in the community, to the left as you walk through the gate (fronting the complex is Teacakes Bakery, and inside and to the right is Mount Fuji).
Upon entering the studio for the first time (and a bit nervous, I might add), I am greeted by none other than neighbor-girl-with-the-awesome-body. Whose name, as it turns out, is Patricia.
Patricia's Friday morning (8am to 9:30am) Core Power Yoga classes are the perfect way to start the day. She teaches carefully to the needs of the class participants: if there are five aging men she will be gentle with all of you, and if there are three moderately-to-pretty-fit ladies she will make you wish you'd eaten breakfast and stretched a bit before class. In short, she teaches to you - whatever your level. The class moves at a leisurely pace and manages to be both challenging and relaxing.
There are so many things to love about the studio itself (including the fact that classes are sparsely attended, so far). The end-grain wood floors are spotless and stretch across the stark yet comfortable space toward the front windows along which yoga mats, blankets, tissues, and other yoga necessities (hairbands) are located. There are a few, well-chosen art pieces that are beautiful and meditative, including a gorgeous oil painting that I covet, which is on the eastern wall.
This morning, as one of three Friday morning Yoga attendees, I received a generous workout and meditative session that - I must admit - ended up being less meditating and more obsessing about eating Yakisoba next door at Country Kitchen as soon as class was over. Oh, and if you're lucky, the lovely proprietess, Clea, will pull a mat alongside you and downward dog the early morn away.
Yoga classes are offered every day at various times: check the website for details. Classes are $10 each, or you can purchase a "stimulus card" that allows 12 classes for $96 (a meager $8 per class).
Do you want a hot body? Then get thyself to Instant Karma. Tell 'em Patricia sent you. read more
