Service was great but food was just okay. Ordered a special for the night, "Nashville Hot Chicken and Waffle" and it was tasty in spite of the missing Nashville hot sauce. I asked and the very friendly server delivered the sauce in a little container which was fine but the chicken should be smothered in sauce in the kitchen, not at the table. My dad had the rigatoni and while it seemed fine initially, the meatballs had a strange flavor. We also had very sweet and creamy espresso martinis. I prefer the bitterness of the espresso coming through. Fun to sit outside on a beautiful evening. For being a restaurant that serves, you know, food, you'd think they would be better at preparing dishes. read more

Pikk's now has large salads that when coupled with their fries makes a decent ovo-vegan meal if you tell them to leave off the fried pig flesh. Newer staff is more competent and non-argumentative. I can't believe I haven't yet reviewed Pikks. I've been coming here since it opened in 2007 I think. Used to come often, at least once a week if not more. That's slowed down over the years, now I might come once or twice a year. I would agree with a lot of the reviews. It's up and down. Sometimes it's great , next time it's borderline bad. The bar has always been great. They've had some good bartenders and some bad ones but overall I'd still stop for a cocktail. The food , I've had everything on the menu throughout the years , lots of changes to it. The old Mexican night was my favorite. Guac made table side. Enchiladas sometimes. Carne asada others and more. I'd rate the food overall a 3. Anything in the menu is a 3. Biggest complaint is the inconsistency, probably why it's not very crowded anymore. Unless it's popcorn fest or some sort of festival at the amphitheater. Sad , it's still there though. Maybe I'll go tomorrow. But maybe I won't. read more

Their table side shrimp cocktail is out of this world and the oysters are the freshest and best tasting I've had in The Midwest. When it comes to seafood you really cannot go wrong at Pikk's! I tried a few new things, being the BLT wedge salad and crème brûlée. Not only was the salad loaded with toppings but the lettuce was so crisp! I've had crème brûlée once before and I must say the crystallization of the sugar on top was impeccable! We had a party of 7 visit here yesterday and it was very disappointing! The service was good and so was the mimosa flight but the food was very under par . The pretzel was just blah and 1/3 of it was hard so it was over cooked while the beer cheese was just ok, I'd had better . The chowder was pretty good , may or may not have ordered it again if I was to ever go back. I had the turkey panini , again , it was just ok nothing I would tell people about that they HAD to go get . Same with the Cuban sandwich. Two friends got the brisket and they were surprised how awful and chewy it was ! The waitress was very nice and understanding, she took it off the bill and gave her a new entree to take home with her bc she couldn't even eat the brisket . The fish and chips wasn't that great either . Only 3 small pieces of thin greasy fish . I posted a video of one of the glasses from the mimosa flight . Oh Pikk's what am I gonna do with you? On a random Tuesday night I was craving fried chicken and we headed for downtown valpo. Once we scored some solid street parking, things were looking good! We walked down the way to find Fork & Cork was closed. WTH? It was a huge disappointment and with it being incredibly windy, icy and cold, we headed back to the car. To both of our surprises, we saw a sign that read "steaks, seafood and friends", if I remember correctly. The tavern looked pretty cozy and about at 3/4 capacity. How bad can it be? We walked in off the freezing sidewalk and into the dining area before the bar. A gentleman behind the host stand kinda just looked at us and didn't say anything. I chose to greet him and say hello. I still can't figure out if maybe he didn't speak English or what was happening. Perhaps he wasn't the host at all, honestly I have no idea but I think he filled our water glasses once. So confused. A server ended up coming over to ask us if would like a table and we requested one far back away from the cold entrance-way. We snagged the first table after the section of booths and planted ourselves down for an experience or, as we like to call it, an adventure. Just flying by the seat of our pants. We waited about 10 or so minutes before anyone greeted us. Several servers waked passed and one even returned my smile I passed to him but no one said anything. It was just awkward. My husband pointed out a few servers hanging out by the back right section past the bar watching golf and chatting but no one came to see us. I was genuinely disappointed because the ambiance is totally something I can get into. Kinda hipster Irish tavern with a fun bar/Cheers look but no one to serve you. So confusing. Seconds after I mentioned we may just leave and head home, the young lady tending bar came over to offer us drinks. To our surprise, she turned out to also be our server. I found that to be strange being the servers were not doing much of anything but run food but ok. Not my restaurant so it is what it is. The gal was friendly but not overly so and it almost seemed like we were an inconvenience. For example, she yelled from behind the bar asking if I wanted a second glass of wine. This was the part I didn't care for but we were hungry, I'm trying desperately to give all these places a fair chance to get in my good graces so we really tried to go along with it. The menu was a slight bit confusing. I was expecting nicer-side bar food and steaks but the menu was a mishmash of random items. Not to say it was bad but I was not seeing a flow and the pricing seemed really randomly off. The best part of the whole experience were my ribs!!! Seriously, these ribs were really excellent, fall-off-the-bone, luscious, flavorful, meaty ribs. So impressed! The rub they use was very nice but the best part was the sauce once it mixed with the rub...it was almost like mole my grandma used to make for enchiladas. It was so freaking good. My mac and cheese was clearly prepared in house. It was not super creamy and had nice flavor but I think a little dry or maybe just over baked. My husband had the open face steak sandwich and loved it. We were very, very pleased with the food. With that being said, the actual taste left in our mouths wasn't great because of the iffy service and somewhat confusing menu was not the best thing in the world. The pros and cons: We ordered a porterhouse with 2 sides to split and a couple drinks. Pros: it's a good spot in Valpo to get an old-fashion date night vibe. They have a prime rib special on Sundays and a special most days of the week. The cocktails are very sweet but they shake table-side so that's pretty rad. Flavor-wise, the steaks are well-seasoned. Waters and drinks were refilled often so a lot of attention to detail. Cons: The sides are forgettable and the sauces are mediocre. The sides and the steaks were all very greasy. The steaks are cooked unevenly but at-least they were seasoned well. I think most people can expect to pay around $100-$90 for 2 drinks, 1 app, 2 entrees, and tip. read more

We had a lovely evening in downtown Valpo last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. We were seated outside in the alley where the temperature was perfect with a light breeze. Our server, Allen, was attentive and answered all our questions.....which were a lot. Everyone loved their food.....tacos and the steak sandwich. My husband & I decided to pop in after a date night at The Press a few stores down. We came in about an hour before close, guy up front asked about our preferred seating(at the bar, table, or booth) & did not rush us at all while looking at the menu, or when I had questions. Fish and chips was good, white fish but needed more fish less chips. Coleslaw served in a ketchup tin?How much could coleslaw cost? Sausage and angel hair pasta was good. Great sausage. Barbecue pork sandwich was ok. Good thing the sever asked if I wanted the slaw on the sandwich. I preferred it on the side and good thing. The sandwich was messy which could be expected but with the addition of coleslaw, it would have been a real mess. But since they served such a meager portion of slaw I suppose it wouldn't have mattered. The barbecue sauce was good but the pork was tasteless. I couldn't tell if it was beef chicken or pork. We gave this place a try after trying 6-7 other places on a Saturday evening without any reservations. The other places had wait times of an hour, at least. I was worried cause this place only had 3 stars on Yelp. Now I know why. I ordered the Nachos appetizer. It was bad! The smoked brisket was onviosly not smoked the way a BBQ would smoke it. It tasted so much like liquid smoke that I couldn't even taste the brisket flavor. The meat so dry and tough and looked like it was shredded. There wasn't much of it on the nachos but it over powered the entire dish. The beer cheese had such a strong liquid smoke taste as well. I didn't think anyone could ruin nachos. Until now. For my meal I pieces the open face beef sanwich with fries and parm-truffle sauce. They saved themselves with this. The fries were freshly cut with the skins of the potato still on. The parm- truffle sauce was creamy with a wonderful balance of flavor. Though the meat on the sandwich was tasty, it was also dry. It wasn't as dry as the brisket on the nachos, but it could've used some au jus to help it. They served the open face sandwich on a piece of garlic toast, which was also done nicely. All in all, it wasn't a terrible experience, but I won't be back. The concept of the food is great, but the execution of the actual food needs work. read more

Another example of how a once great place can fall from grace. We used to love coming here but after tonight we are not sure we'll be back. We came in tonight before the dinner rush. It was virtually empty but it took about 5 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us despite at least 5 employees being near the bar. After we were seated we were greeted by our waiter, got our drinks, and ordered within a reasonable amount of time-no issues there. We started with poutine. The pork was burnt, and it's freshness was questionable. It also had an odd flavor combination with BBQ pulled pork and brown gravy. My husband ordered the ribeye. It came out bone dry as though it had been sitting under a heat lamp yet was much more rare than he had requested. He said it was a much lower end cut as there was lots of gristle. There was no seasoning whatsoever. It appeared as if it was the chef's first attempt to make a steak, and obviously he needed to watch a few YouTube videos first as it took quite a long time to get our food. I ordered the filet mignon and was underwhelmed. It was also much more rare than I had requested but the outside had areas that were almost burnt. It also did not have any seasoning and it had to swim in steak sauce for awhile. Throughout the rest of our visit, our waiter was very inconsistent. At times he was on top of clearing away plates, refills, etc. Other times he appeared more interested in getting laid by the bartender than taking care of his tables. This apparently was not just an issue with us. We overheard him apologizing profusely to another table near us but did not hear what had happened. read more

We're from LA visiting family in Valparaiso and were looking for a place for dinner. We stumbled across Pikk's. What a great find. My friend had the filet which was great. I had ordered the steak sandwich only to be informed a few minutes later they were sold out. Michael our waiter mentioned they'd be happy to turn the filet into a sandwich. As it turned out it was by far the best steak sandwich I've ever had. It came with ciabatta bread, extra crispy thin onion rings and peppercorn sauce. Well they should put this on the menu. It was by far the best steak sandwich I've had. And just as a side note all too often when you order a baked potato they always come lukewarm and served with hard rock cold butter, which only makes the potato colder. The potato came piping hot with room temperature butter. Not even the most outstanding steak restaurants get this right. So this little steak house in Valparaiso upstages the best in the business. A really hot potato with warm butter is one of my pet peeves. By the way the peppercorn sauce was perfect. They have a great varied menu, a few out of the ordinary items which actually makes it fun, not the same old same old. Their daily specials were all appealing. Our only disappointment was the root-beer float, the ice cream tasted like ice milk and the root beer on the weak side for flavor. Michael was friendly, funny and couldn't have been better. We don't get to Valparaiso often but Pikk's will definitely be our must go to restaurant anytime we're in town. read more

We used to live in Valparaiso and started coming here when they first opened. The kids have fond memories of their mac n cheese as well as their rootbeer floats. I loved their oysters Rockefeller and shrimp cocktail. Something changed in their mac n cheese recipe as well as the osters rock...because it seemed a little bland. The service has also declined a little since our table was basically filled with dirty plates for a while. We had a great time with my grandparents. My grandmother's mini burgers were very overcooked- my boyfriend just gave her a piece of fish and ate her order even though they were black. I get the feeling that if she had sent it back they would have been nice about it, but it wasn't a big deal. He likes crispy meat anyway. I had the chopped salad with steak and it was great! The portion size was huge, very filling! Their fish is excellent, I suggest it. My grandfather ordered a burger- he said it wasn't anything to write home about but it was acceptable and he ate it all. I also tried a Pink Cadillac and my boyfriend got a Dragon's Milk beer. I would suggest either, however the drinks are pretty expensive even for a bar so be aware that even for a bar the prices are a bit steep. All in all the food was adequate, nothing more or less. We ordered the grilled oysters as an appetizer and were very pleased. Our friends had never had oysters before and liked them so much we ordered another round. For our meals, I had the fish and chips while my wife ordered the meatloaf burger. The portions were large on both orders and the quality was there as well. Nice location, but in our party of FIVE, the waitress completely missed the entrees for two of us. Once everyone else's entrees were delivered, it took another 20 minutes for ours to come out. Everyone at the table had finished their meal before ours made it to the table. That's bad, but you would think they would have not charged us for the missing entrees, or tried to make up for the mistake in SOMEWAY, but no, we were billed the full price for everything. And steaks were super fatty and did not live up to their reputation. This is my go-to restaurant when I am visiting family in Valpo! My favorite dinner is the Pot Roast. Not flashy, but chock full of meat and fresh, tasty vegetables. A midwest staple - and they do it with flair. I'm also a fan of the Tavern Burger. A huge chunk of juicy beef and all of the toppings. It's so tasty and juicy, I've had to ask for a second napkin! If you're having the burger, you've got to have a beer! And they have a great selection of beers to choose from. The bar is fully stocked and the bartender knows how to make a generous drink. I love the old historical building and the traditional/chic vibe of this place. But what I really enjoy is sitting outside on the spacious patio. Our family has been known to sit there long enough to have lunch, drink a few adult beverages and then ask for the dinner menu! That's another thing about this place - they don't rush you out of there. I'll be back the next time I'm in Valpo. read more

Full disclosure: we live on the square. Pikk's has become one of two of our regular hangouts. I'm even a mug club member. The beer selection is good, the oysters fantastic and the service is like family. If you're looking for a bargain, drive 10 minutes in any direction. Running a restaurant downtown costs more than on highway 30, this is a reality. Also, it's not a chain eatery so sometimes unexpected crowds can overwhelm, so there's that. Don't hate on the wait staff if they get overwhelmed; if you dine out enough, you can sense this in your first 30 seconds in a restaurant. Main+Lincoln and Sage are special occasion restaurants due to the cost. Stacks and Ricochet are much cheaper but always packed and noisy (although both pretty tasty). The remaining places near the square have their merits as well. However, Pikk's seems to have it all, for me. read more

I was SO disappointed! We decided to try Pikk's Tavern for Mother's Day and take advantage of their special Mother's Day menu and mini buffet. First of all, let me just say that I picked this place because there was 10 of us and their special menu had great offerings. When we got there, the waitress let us know that 4 of the items on the menu were no longer available. Then after we ordered, she came back to me and told me that part of what I ordered wasn't available and they could make it without or I could pick something else. Next, the buffet... They had some good appetizer things to choose from, however, they were not keeping it stocked. When something was out it was out. I asked a few times for them to refill a few specific things and even then I had to ask more than once before it happened. We weren't the only family or large party there so I wasn't quite understanding why it was such an issue to keep the buffet filled with food for us to eat - especially for what we were paying. Finally, the entree. I changed my order to the steak since they were out of part of my original choice. I asked for it medium (I'm 38 weeks pregnant and not really supposed to be eating red meat but a little pink can't hurt). I got through half of it which was more pink than I wanted and the other half was bloody and practically rare. Three of the four of us that ordered the steak had under and unevenly cooked steaks but by that point we were all so fed up that we just wanted to get out of there. So the food was eh and the service was equally not great. Anyway, long story short, we will not be going back. Next year we're going to Kelsey's Steakhouse again, which is always a solid choice. read more

This place is good. Walked in and was seated relatively quickly. The servers were friendly. The restaurant is clean. I feel like the burger sliders I had were a tad dry. They had good flavor with the onions and blue cheese on them. The fries were good as well. The thing they are known for and is still my favorite is the home made avocado dip and chips. Literally make the dip in front of you with a fresh avocado and mix ins. I have been here before but this is my first review on Pikks. I gave it 4 stars because the service was good. Go somewhere else. We have been semi-regular customers for nearly a decade and used to love coming here and bringing friends from out of town here. Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend this place. For the past few years, the service has been slow or off-putting. Tonight, I had to go hunt down our server - twice. Also tonight, the runner that brought us our food decided to take a moment to "air out" and fan the sweat off himself right next to our table. We were looking for a nightcap on their patio, but unfortunately another groups very small children were running all over and screaming. When the disruption was brought to servers/managements attention, they offered to move us inside - rather than address the group who's children were causing the commotion. The menu has not changed in all the time we've been coming, and is a bit over priced for the quality. Pikk's fries for our appetizer, they were good. Salmon and Filet for the entrees, Broccoli and Mac and Cheese for sides. All of which were extremely bland. The drinks seem to be the high point of this restaurant. A decent selection of cocktails, martinis, etc. We ordered a Hurricane and a Wildflower cocktail, both great with great presentation. Had a very up and down experience here. It's local, which is a plus; it's in a very nice location, also a plus; and the atmosphere is very cozy and creates a warm ambience. I especially loved the large window in the front, which allowed me to check out the fantastic holiday lighting in the park. The service was attentive, friendly, and it seemed like they truly cared about the place. The food was hit and miss, however. The scotch egg was fantastic, and even though it may seem steep to pay 8 or so bucks for just one egg, they make it worth your while. The shrimp cocktail was not worth the order. It's $2.50 per shrimp, and the shrimp we got were very, very small. They prepare it at your table, which is fun to watch, but eating three shrimp that looked like they came straight from one of those value bags at the grocery, kind of put a damper on it. The salad is $11.00, but that too is a very large portion and worth the price. The aged ribeye comes at a fancy steakhouse price, but the taste just wasn't there. It was good, but it tasted like a steak you could get anywhere at a fraction of the price. Loved the drink menu, the beer selection, and the wine list. Very large, diverse, and they put in the effort to make a good cocktail. Overall, if you want to try this place out, I would suggest reading some of the reviews here and scouting out what people like and what people don't. That may seem over-generalized but it's especially true here, because it seems like the opinions are all over the board, and that kind of falls in with my very up and down experience here. read more
