We've gone to Pierce's Tree Farm every year for 6 or 7 years, and have liked their trees. We've cut our own for 14 years, and we used other tree farms before we discovered Pierce's. This year, however, we got the tree home, and it was a good 18 inches shorter than the tree we cut down. (We always use a tape measure in the field, before and after cutting.) Besides the height, the trunk of the tree (where it was cut) was not the same. I called and spoke with the owner, to say that something seemed to have gotten mixed up in the shaking/baling/tying-it-to-the-car stage, which works with a "coat check" style system using numbered tags. I'm sure it happens. The owner stuck to his guns. "No," he said, "mix-ups happened last year, but it's impossible that any mix-ups happened today. Besides, no one else called." I was disappointed with this response. I'm sure it happens that trees look different once they're brought home, but I don't believe I'm wrong in this case. It was, after all, extremely busy at the farm, being the day after Thanksgiving. I found the owner's unwillingness to even consider the possibility of a mix-up to be very frustrating. Next year we will go to a different farm, and I'll bring a red bandana to tie to my tree before I hand it over to anyone for baling. read more
