We came in with a large group of about 20 people, so I'll give them credit for handling a group that size. The staff really stood out--they were exceptional, friendly, and did a great job taking care of us. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. I ordered the ceviche, and the chips that came with it were so stale that I couldn't eat them. That really took away from the overall experience. It's possible this place performs better with smaller groups, because the staff was genuinely great. Maybe it's because of Labor Day weekend, but the place was packed and service noticeably lacking. I could tell immediately from the valet that it was going to be busy. Valet didn't take long, fortunately, but they weren't exactly friendly either. We were asked if we had a reservation, which we didn't. They said we'll have to grab high tops at either the bar area or the porch outside. We decided to wait a little for one table inside the clear up rather than opting for already open outdoors because of the number of flies and bees that were flying around. It took my active asking the walking by staff before cleaning out the table. I usually try to give serving and bussing staff a bit of slack when it's especially busy, but it's a bit difficult to accept it when you see a group of serving staff huddled around the bar area, doing not much more than talking, rather than catering to a number of tables that need bussing. Anyway, when Jacob, our server came around to wipe the table and get our orders taken, things seemed to get better. That is, until the food arrived. Our orders: Salmon rice bowl, fish tacos plate and a bowl of French onion soup. Oh, and a pint of Spotted Cow beer. Let's just say that the beer was the best part of the meal. Salmon was cooked fine and tasted okay, but all the other elements of tge dish made it taste like a cheap 5 dollar Chinese take-out dish. Cucumbers and pineapple garnishes did not go especially well with soy sauce based sauce that was sparingly poured over jasmine rice. Not sure why they would use plain white jasmine rice to serve with salmon, when nothing between them will give you the necessary moisture to make the dish pleasant. One would think at lease the other aforementioned elements would aid in making the plate work but nope, that didn't happen. Fish tacos were okay. I've personally had a lot worse before, so I was more inclined to let it go as being just mediocre, but it certainly fell far below her standards. She went as far to say that it was one of her worst fish taco experiences. The doozie was the onion soup. I could tell immediately upon receiving it that it wasn't going to be great from the way it looked too runny. My daughter lauged because I immediately said "wow" after taking my first sip, and not for the right reason. The soup tasted like...nothing. It was bland to the point of not tasting like anything. I've had onion soup that was too salty bit honestly have never had it tasteless. I could only laugh. In retrospect, I should have just sent it back instead of finishing it to get a few dollars taken off my check, but I was honestly having too much fun making fun of it with my daughter that I ended up finishing it. All I wanted was a nice enough lunch at a waterfront restaurant and what I got was one of my absolute worst experiences at any restaurants. Let me start with this... the ambiance, atmosphere, and vibe at Pier 290 was spectacular! I love how close it is to the water and how much of an amazing view you get as well. I'm rarely in Lake Geneva since I'm from Chicago, so I gave this place a try for a bachelor party. The food looked promising on paper; however, I wasn't that satisfied once I tried it. The fish tacos were pretty flavorless when it came to the actual fish, and the house made chips were nothing too special. I just personally think the price didn't match the quality of food. I also had a few bites of my friends salmon bowl, and it was genuinely just okay. I will say that the service was very good, and I enjoyed how the server was giving us recommendations and took a few pictures for us. We were a big group and ordered lots of different things. Then we all passed around the plates and took a little bit of everything, and our general consensus was: The food is fine. Nothing stood out. The things we thought would be great where just fine. But some of the things that we thought would be "meh" were actually good. We got a few appetizers: the ahi tuna tartare, Island Shrimp Plate, chips & dip, and cheese curds. (Because when you're in Wisconsin, you get the cheese curds.) My unexpected favorite was the Island Shrimp Plate, which I never would have ordered myself, but I'm so glad we did. It's breaded shrimp tossed in a honey-mustard sauce, served with sliced sweet peppers and coleslaw. If you're wondering what appetizer to get, this is the one. It's warm and cool, sweet and salty, crunchy and soft, all in one dish. For my entree, I got the blackened tuna sandwich, which sounded great buy didn't taste like much. It had all kinds of great components, though: a thick piece of blackened tuna, avocado, arugula, all between a brioche bun. It just needed to be seasoned properly, but it wasn't, so it mostly just tasted mushy. The highly anticipated food at our table was the lobster roll. It is one of the most expensive things on the menu ($39!). It was one of the things that was just fine, and definitely not worth the price. It was a little dry, which was a shame. One of the unexpected very good things was the turkey melt: deli turkey with cherry jam, bacon, brie and arugula on sourdough bread. It sounds kind of ho-hum, but the addition of a sour cherry jam puts this sandwich into a different category altogether. The location, though! Pier 290 is located right on Lake Geneva, so you get beautiful lakeside views from your table, whether you're sitting inside or outside on the patio. read more

Small bun but very tasty sandwich. Tuna had a well seasoned crust and it had plenty of avocado. Could have used a more substantial bun to make it a more filling meal. Such a fun place with a nice view of the water. I made a reservation for dinner and asked for a table for 2 with a view. However, we were seated in between the bar, a big group and families with children. Not the romantic spot I was envisioning. I looked around and saw empty small tables and asked to be moved. Extremely disappointing experience. My college friends were in town with my family and I at our lakehouse, where we come almost every weekend, and stopped here for drinks. A security guard approached our group in an unnecessarily aggressive and confrontational way demanding to see our IDs. We had absolutely no problem showing them because every single ID was real. Instead of simply checking them and moving on, she continued hounding us, repeatedly implying that they were fake and seemingly trying to catch us in some kind of lie. She couldn't, because there was nothing to catch. The entire interaction felt accusatory, rude, and completely unprofessional. I understand that checking IDs is part of the job, especially with younger groups, but there is a huge difference between doing your job and treating paying customers like criminals for no reason. It was especially upsetting considering my family comes here regularly and we have never expected to be treated with that level of disrespect. If you're a younger group visiting the area, I honestly would not recommend coming here for drinks unless you're comfortable being interrogated and accused of using fake IDs even when yours are completely legitimate. There are plenty of places where you can spend your money without being treated like you've done something wrong just by walking in. read more

I know some places don't serve bread so I didn't say anything, but toward the end of our dinner I Looked around and every one was getting bread served to their tables. The young man at valet parking (free) was very kind and engaging, the girls at the hostess stand were very friendly and welcoming, and our waitress, Alexia, was fantastic. Not pushy, timed her appearances perfectly. We sat out outside, lots of others enjoying the summer breeze off the lake but conversation could still be had. Very relaxing watching the water and boats. The food, we had ceviche and steak salad, was very good and plentiful, worth every penny. My husband said the ceviche was in his top three and he frequently travels to both coasts. Been going to Pier 290 for many years, although only 2-3 times annually as there are numerous other restaurants we enjoy which offer better food, service and dining experience. We recently dined there with two other couples and had the following experience. Location, hard to beat but that's about the only reason to return.( At this time) Food has improved marginally compared with previous visits. Chicken Milanese was the best of our entrees, ribs were so so and beef short ribs were fair at best.So, nothing horrible or really good. But, here's where they fell apart. Sat outside which was nice but had to wait 10 minutes before getting our water glasses filled. Drink order was delayed and incorrect. 10 minutes to figure out they don't serve Jim Beam which one of our group ordered. Overall, our server dropped the ball, was inconsistent and was clearly out of his league as a waiter. Service clearly wasn't matching up with prices as was the case in the past. Overall a two star experience. As a local for over 50 years I've spoken with many other locals and their sentiments were pretty much the same as mine. That being said a vast majority of their business is from out of state visitors. My wife and I will give it another try later in the year. Hopefully service improves. read more
