We've never had gelato this creamy and filled with high quality chunks of cherries and pistachios. It was a bit of a drive but I know it's worth it. It is located in a small building behind a house. You have to go inside and knock on the door and someone will come to the door/window. They also offer ice cream pies, special cheesecakes, sorbet, spumoni, and tartufo. You walk down a small alley to get to the building. I walk in and it's a tiny vestibule with the menus on the wall. Upon entering I was immediately greeted by a nice gentleman. Best ice cream and novelties in this part. Its creamy, reminds me of gelato and the add-ins are incredible. The pretzels and cookies stay crunchy, etc. their dark chocolate bon bon is divine Some of the reviews make it sound intimidating to purchase. It's not. Find parking on the street, follow the path to the kitchen and ring the bell. This isn't an ice cream shop, they sell to individuals and businesses. A decade ago I had a co-worker that told me about this place. She said it was the best place for ice cream. I finally went out and found the place last year when the pandemic started and all the grocery stores were sold out of ice cream. First thing I took notice of when I got there is the people that work here are super friendly. (And were friendly still each time I came back) Not lying, it's the best ice cream I've ever had. I bought my mother's birthday ice cream pie (the one with the pecans) to her birthday dinner party. At first everyone laughed at me when I told them it's the best but they stopped laughing and agreed with me after they'd tried it. My mother had five birthday cakes that night and the pecan pie I brought was the only one finished at the end of the night. Find a light green house with the Piece of Cake sign next to it, figure the house must be the place! Park, go up to the house and lift your hand to knock before realizing No, the location you're looking for is actually the commercial building behind the house, accessible through an alley. This is where it gets fun. When you go into the shop, you're faced with a wall containing a 2 way mirror. Next to the mirror is a door secured with a biometric fingerprint lock. You feel like you're in FBI custody, if the FBI had pictures of ice cream hanging on the walls. You stand there, staring at yourself in the mirror with your hat and your big winter coat and your face mask and you feel like a fugitive, or like you're lost. The door opens a crack and a man's voice tells you to wait. You nod obediently. What choice do you have? Finally from behind the secure door comes a man with a Lynyrd Skynyrd t shirt, a big silver crucifix on a chain, and, yes, a face mask. The owner, James! James was unexpectedly friendly. We drove 45 minutes from our home to get there and he knew the names of local independent ice cream shops in our town. We got the sampler pie and served it to guests the next day. You should have heard their gasps when we opened the box. The guests were adults but it took them so long to decide on their flavors, like children. It was cute. They ended up eating a lot of it and raving about it. But we still have plenty left to eat ourselves this week. :-) You will have a hard time buying another ice cream chain store cake after this. Hidden Gem in Rahway! Who would have thought that you can get the country's best ice cream cakes right here in Rahway, NJ? This unsuspecting ice cream shop (located behind a home on a relatively residential block in Rahway) makes their products on premises. They sell ice cream pies, ice cream truffles, tartufos, novelties, fruit sorbets, baked cakes, individual baked goods, tarts and gelato. Best bet is the ice cream sampler pie which provides an opportunity to try a selection of amazing offerings. Each one is better than the next. I brought this sampler to a Christmas dinner party and it was a huge success! I have also tried a variety pack of the tartufos. Again, each one was better than the next. Try the pistachio which received rave reviews from my Italian neighbors who are quite particular about their pistachio ice cream. I have not tried any of the non ice cream cakes, but have heard from other customers that they are top quality too. Will give one a try in the near future. The owner, Jim, is passionate about his business, makes certain you are completely satisfied with all of your purchases and offers lots of personal touches. After having a ridiculously delicious slice of limoncello marscapone cake at our favorite restaurant, we had to ask if it was made in-house or if it was brought in. We were directed to Piece of Cake in Rahway and we were so happy we were. We paid far less for their amazing limoncello cake than we have for lesser attempts at other shops. The very friendly woman who helped us even gave my son a couple of other desserts to try. I can't recommend them enough, and we will definitely be going back! It was the exotic gelato flavors that lured me in, however when I got into the store it was extremely confusing. It was more factory than a store front and I couldn't find anything on the price sheets for pints of gelato. I had wrongly envisioned a beautiful gelato spread and storefront. The gentlemen there was nice, but not good at educating his customers about how or what to order. I was with two other coworkers who where also so confused they didn't buy anything. I did purchase some ice cream pie that comes in two slice packs and it was phenomenal! If I based my entire review on taste alone I would have given five stars. Truly a delicious treat! Okay, I have to admit that I haven't actually been to the store. However, I was lucky enough to be a judge at the Rahway Taste of Spring and Piece of Cake was serving samples of their gelato and sorbet. I am completely embarrassed to admit how much of it I ended up eating... I tried the Minty Lemon Sorbet, the Fig & Walnut gelato, and the Graham Slam Cracker gelato. They were all spectacular. So creamy and so good. I'm not usually a sorbet person but I ate all of the Minty Lemon Sorbet sample, it was just so refreshing and perfectly tart. The 1st time I walked in, I was offered a taste of just made Banana Gelato with caramel and walnuts. It was awesome!
