This place is okay. Decent lunch special with a pizza and drink for a reasonable price. I was wayyy too hungry after finishing my lunch. Be sure you order extra food if you just get the pizza lunch special. Toppings were good. Service was good. Just not super impressed. read more

Average. Ehhh... Fine, it was fine. Based on the other reviewers I was expecting "fresh" ingredients, which in my California mind is local grown tasty produce: ie. organic tomatoes and peppers with flavor! I think the Italian sausage served on the pizza was whatever cheap variety they could get frozen in large quantity. It wasn't baaaaad... but it wasn't special. I guess I got the wrong impression from the other reviewers before me. When I read how great the place is for kids, I should have understood that to mean.... "Oh! Uncomplicated tastes and less distinguished palettes." Simple. And sometimes simple is perfect! But it's not necessarily worth a 15 minute drive! read more

I can't believe I've lived within a mile of this place for 4 years and JUST tried it! I stopped in here with a friend and her 1 year old on a Saturday evening and the place was bumping, but we were quickly greeted and sat at a table. No worries about bringing kids here - I swear I think EVERY table had at least on baby/child. They've got the right idea though - kids are sat quickly, kids are given crayons to draw, a handful of kids were camped out at the pizza counter watching them make the pizzas, and servers greet you quickly and SOO friendly. Seriously, our waiter was so nice and attentive without being pushy - not always what you get from servers as young as he was. Now on to the important stuff - the food. Our pizza was AMAZING!!! We got half with bacon and pineapple and half with prosciutto. So. Good. The crust was perfect - thin with that crisp, non-greasiness that you can only get from a wood-fired oven. The sauce was amazing also - tasted very fresh and not processed. We didn't eat anything else, but looking around the salads and other dishes people ordered also looked very good - and generous serving sizes. I'll definitely frequent pie-tanza again, but maybe take-out next time since I don't have kids of my own. Great place to take families out to eat though. read more

One of the best Italian spots I have ever been to! Freshest tomatoes ever! I got the Angel Hair with Tomatoes. It's amazing, the sauce is delicious but ask for extra Parmesan though! I've gone three times and always get the same thing. They're clean and fresh and the restaurant itself is beautiful. If you haven't gone, do it! read more

Good, not great. The pizzas were made with fresh ingredients and had good flavor, but the crust was a bit too soggy for my taste and the sausage was that pre-fab kind that is cut into chunks. Pie Tanza, take a lesson from The Italian Store on this one, okay? Would I go back? Probably not. Take out pizza will always be The Italian Store or Vace (when in DC), but dine-in pizza is definitely Flatbreads in Clarendon. read more

Pie-tanza is far and away the best Italian restaurant in NoVA, and it's not even close. Firstly; the food. They have a great menu with a lot of different things, from sandwiches to pastas to a great dessert menu and great drink and alcohol options, etc. Any of the classics you want, you can get them here. The pizzas are wood oven, which really sets it apart from most VA pizza places. If you were raised on Italian food like I was, this is the go to place. The pizzas are great, not an afterthought menu item like they are in so many restaurants. This is pizza done right. Secondly, the ambience is great. It's that rare perfect ground where it's a great place to take families - which is a must for Italian food - while still also being a quiet atmospheric place you could take a girl for a nice date. It's never loud or out of control (Which if you ask me, thats a testament to how good the food is). It's a nice environment at pie-tanza and it's one of Arlington's best places to eat, meet friends, and drink a few carafes - Mitch Harrison read more

Best pizza in the area. Not as good as 2 Amy's. I wish they would add more unusual types of pies, but they deliver their current menu well. read more

Pie-tanza is our favorite neighborhood spot. It is down-to-earth and family-friendly. The food tastes authentic, fresh, and delicious. We especially love the spaghetti with meatballs and the goat cheese and arugula pizza. The prices are reasonable, especially considering the generous portions. Pie-Tanza exudes a warm, friendly, and cheerful ambience. The owners and staff go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome and well cared for. We always leave with a smile. Thank you, Pie-Tanza! read more

When this place opened it blew everyone away(I even worked here in its prime, and was obsessed!). But since then I have found a consistent downwards slope, especially with the pizza. I hadn't returned in a few years as I don't generally eat pizza/high carb food. I was really craving the thin crust, brink oven Italian style so I thought, "what the hell, let's do this." My favorite was the Mediterranean pizza, but I am sorry to say that it was terrible. The cheese was rubber by the time I ate it and the whole thing was dry. Not to mention that the crust was an inch all around (bigger in some places). I felt like the toppings were being skimped on or very unevenly distributed. The salad was decent. Pretty simple pie-tanza salad. But I asked for very light dressing. Not sure if that was light or they normally just drown the Greens. It's been a while so I don't have a comparison, but I get it, most people like salads heavily dressed. I am the weird one here. :) Don't think I will eat here any more because when I want pizza, it has got to be the best damn pizza I ever ate. It is great family place though. Super bummer for me. :( read more

Mmmm brick-oven pizza. Came here on a restaurant.com excursion. Pretty satisfied. Got tonnnsss of food. But omg the garlic bread... I think I got a heart attack, but I finished it all anyway. The pizza crust is just crispy and thing enough and the cheese on it was amaazzing. I like the atmosphere, the tables are a little small and close, but I guess the cozier it is! read more

Wasn't impressed by this place. Ordered a white pizza and fried mozzarella, both of which were just ok. Doubt I'll return

My family has eaten here many, many times since the restaurant opened several years ago and every meal has been delicious. The wood-fired pizza is the best and the sandwiches are delicious as are the desserts. Pie Tanza is a family friendly restaurant and prices are very reasonable. Ed runs a terrific restaurant and he makes sure it remains consistently top notch. read more

One of my absolute favorite Arlington Eats. Huge fan of the thin NY style pizza cooked before you in a massive wood fired brick oven. Delicate, crisp crust, flavorful toppings and cooked to perfection. I also Looove Salads, especially giant Steak Salads. The Fire Roasted Steak Salad is a home run. Tons of green greens, bacon, chunky blue cheese, purple onions, (i hold the tomatoes) all with a nice grilled skirt steak on top. The dressing is a tangy vinaigrette and pairs up well with the steak and salad so I always order extra on the side. Sooo Good ! Also I have enjoyed the Chicken Parm and friends I'm with have enjoyed the lasagna and the wraps. Everything has been good and I will continue to come back. The service is decent, --usually students but very willing and personal servers that seem to care about their service. Unusual, but nice. The place is very casual and warm on the inside. Kid/Family/Grandmama friendly. The only negative is sometimes its not easy finding parking, but it generally always works out. A solid 4.25 read more

My wife says I am the most finicky eater in the World, so when I had the Pizza here I thought it was about the best I had ever had. Only negative is it is so popular getting a seat sometimes can be difficult, but the food is absolutely worth the wait. I will be calling in orders and driving from ALEXANDRIA to get it!!!! read more

Pros: Helpful wait staff, clean, decor was good. Cons: Food was meh...; not creative, bland, would only go there if i had 8 children running around and I didn't care about the quality of the cuisine. Bottom line: Family restaurant, for the price you pay you don't get equivalent portion, price, or taste (couldn't think of a 'p' word for taste). Pizza: half sausage half cheese... it was... meh. Sauce was ok, crust was alright but it didn't have that zing. Appetizer: We had some type of french bread with tomato sauce and cheese. It was meh.... read more

Not a bad little restaurant. Very causal place...a place you could bring the kids. I had a sausage and pepper sub. The tartufo is very yummy! I would go back just for the tartufo. read more

How I heard of this place: Looking for a quick bite and no hassel meal, Chris told me about a great, "wood-grilled" pizza place he had once tried, not far from his home. We decided to place an order for take-away and enjoy it, while relaxing at his house. Type of cuisine: "Pie-Tanza serves gourmet wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza, fresh oversized salads, authentic Italian entrees, and hot & cold subs all made with the finest ingredients. pie-tanza also serves beer and wine. Don't forget to leave room for our specialty desserts and espresso drinks." Ambiance: While we decided to order our meal to go, we had to stop in to pick up our order, not more than 15 minutes after we called it in. Located in a strip mall, the quaint character of the establishment is unassuming. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the store-front seem tinted, with the blazing sun setting behind us. Walking into the space, the large setting is evident with table and chairs available for dine-in on either side of the entry-way. A young woman greets us at the podium, but we point to the To Go Orders counter at the back of the store. Walls are painted with murals of the Italian Countryside, a bikeparked next to an old Tuscan home, set along tall grass and dusty roads, as well as painted decor resembling stone, an Italian flag and Welcome signs. The paintings give the clutterless space a cozy and warm feel. At the back, the take-away counter is lit with neon lights and a cashier completes the transaction of payment for food. What I ordered: On this visit, we wanted to try something new and something typical. We started with the Spinach, Artichoke & Rosemary Chicken Calzone ($11.69) with fresh spinach leaves, chopped artichoke hearts and shaved rosemary chicken with ricotta, mozzarella, fontina and sweet tomato puree. And ended with the 12″ specialty pie: Primo Pepperoni ($11.89), a very thin base of pizza dough topped with mozzarella, fontina, parmesan and red sauce smothered with extra large sandwich style pepperoni and baked to wood-fire perfection. What I loved: I loved the pepperoni pizza and would easily entertain the thought of eating it again, and again. The large, slightly spicy pepperoni added great flavor to each bite! The hint of tomato sauce allowed for the flavors of cheese and pepperoni to truly make their way out and enrich each finger-licking, mouth watering bite. I loved that the chicken in the calzone was abundant and the cheese a secondary, giving way to the flavors of the fresh vegetables and light sauce. Why I loved it: The food was fabulous and surprisingly light for Italian food, the thin crust of the pizza grilled to crisp perfection with soft dough inside, the staff friendly and the wait time could not have been more doable! Cost: Average to high ($10-$13 per 12″ specialty pizza) read more

Well the reviews here about children running a muck were no joke; I got elbowed twice. Nevertheless, I believe it MARKETS itself as a family establishment, thus, children will be present. No worries there. We did the rosemary bread as an app (splendid) and a half-carafe of the Cab blend (very good!). The ambiance was interesting and the kids were entertaining us, actually, so that kept us busy for awhile. We ordered the Tomato & Oregano pizza (i had been craving Neapolitan pizza since watching Passport to Europe too much) and this totally hit the spot. The basil was very fresh, as was everything else on it. If you're looking for an authentic dish, get the Tomato & Oregano; it's a more sophisticated version of the Maurgarita (sp) pizza. For dessert, I got the Espresso soufle sundae (omg, so good) and my bf got the Hazelnut Tartfute or something. It was interesting; a scoop of gelato with some sort of fudge in the middle. In any event, I was severly impressed with the food, wine, and value of this restaurant. I will be returning. read more

If you are ordering online, you might want to consider eating before you go. We placed an online order at 5:58pm tonight, requesting a pickup time of 6:30. The confirmation said we'd get an email telling us when the order would be ready. The email came at 6:18, stating the order would be ready at 6:45. OK -- they are busy. We get there at 6:45. There are at least a dozen people waiting outside. One woman complains she's been waiting two hours. Finally, our order is brought out at 7:20. No apologies from them for the delay. read more

It's an inexpensive pizza-and-sandwiches joint in a strip mall, but it's as good as that type of place gets: scrumptious wood-fired pizzas; paninis and garlic bread lovingly prepared with rustic loaves; neverending soda refills; a salad menu that offers more than just your standard iceberg with shredded cheese and Italian; managers busily attending to customers in the dining room, obviously taking pride in their restaurant. Sure, the place is loud and crawling with kids, but at least most of those kids are wearing cute tae kwon do uniforms from the studio a couple of doors down. read more

I can still remember my first time dining at Pie-Tanza. I shared a pizza with my daughter, and guess what? I forgot my wallet at home! The waiter handled it so incredibly amazingly, that I've been coming back now for years. I can easily say this is my favorite restaurant in all of the DMV. Everyone goes out of their way to make my daughter feel amazing. Food is always spot on, and I've never had a bad moment ever. The pizza's I would say is what they do best, but they have an amazing Steak Salad, the Linguini with Muscles is to die for, and I think I've had their Garlic Bread every single time I've been in. Honestly a gem! And the neighbor is extremely family oriented, and filled with other gems. read more

Great thin crust pizza. Don't be tempted to put on too many toppings or it gets soggy. Much better to dine in than take to go. By the time you get home the pizza tends to get soggy. This is the best pizza in North Arlington if you like thin crust with real ingredients like roasted eggplant, garlic, etc. Also has decent pasta and salads. Always packed with kids -the tables are close together and it's noisy, so not really a "date" place. JcA read more

Tasty white fontina pizza. Very thin crust - could have been a little crispier for thin crust. This was a decent place though the menu wasn't as eclectic as i would have liked. I tend to like more unusual combos of toppings. Noisy place popular with families and little kids. That's what you get for eating early. I would go back if I were in the neighborhood. read more

Place is great! Came over from S.Arl as I had been wanting to try this place. Was worth the trip. Came in @ 5 for dinner and by 6 when I left the place was almost full. Great service, great food. Had a pizza and side salad which were both delicious. I will be back to eat here again soon! read more

I have been a regular here for many years. Delicious food, reasonable prices, generous portions, friendly and efficient staff. My faves are the chicken/walnut salad, grape/goat cheese salad, and pear/arugula salad. My family loves the pizzas, calzones and chicken parm. We usually try to go early or late as the parking lot and dining room are often packed during normal lunch and dinner times. Take out is also great with 15 minute parking available near the entrance. Very highly recommend! read more

Pie Tanza used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I was there many times when it first opened. Since then, the prices have gone up and the quality has gone down. It is still good, but not as good as it used to be. This seems to be a pattern for many new restaurants. They try really hard to impress you in the beginning. Thumbs up for the ceasar salad, the mozzarella sticks, and steak and cheese sandwich (get the mayonaisse on the side). My favorite pizza is the meatball with carmelized onions. The meatball and chicken parm subs are mediocre and nothing special. Overall, a nice place to eat but a bit overpriced. Hopefully, the quality does not continue to go down. read more

I really like this place -- the pizza is always great. Good family atmosphere. The salads are good but I'd skip the desserts.

I visited Pie Tanza with my sister today for lunch, and we both really enjoyed it. We started out splitting the goat cheese salad, which was really excellent... and quite large, too. I ordered the grilled vegetable sandwich which was really, really tasty for the price. It came with a side, I chose fries. They were yummy! The long, thin, crispy kind that I love. My sister ordered the Mediterranean pizza and really enjoyed it... I stole a bit, and I concur. Our waitress was very courteous, and I saw other things on the menu I'd like to return for to try. Sure, it's a chain... but it's a local chain, and it's affordable and pretty delicious! I hope to return soon. read more

2 stars for food and 1 star for service...really. The pizza was ok definitely not to eat again. The toppings were generous and the tomato sauce had a good taste but that's about how good it gets. I wouldn't go back when there are so many other pizza options. The twice baked lasagne was a messy mess of cheese flowing over on the outside of the dish. Lots of flavor if you like salt. Service was not good from the start. The host sat us at a dirty table twice. Service needs a lot of work. Very disingenuous. The young staff seemed more eager in seeing us leave so they can go about their plans. Never again. read more

Yep, it's really good especially when Pupatella is closed on Mondays and I need some awesome brick oven pizza. I have been to both the Falls Church and Arlington locations many times and have never been disappointed. You go sit down or order carryout. Fresh ingredients, thin crispy crust, great service. I do not really have anything bad to say. The marinara sauce they use is slightly sweet and makes for a great base for any of the choices. They use these giant pepperonis which I tried for the 1st time yesterday - awesome. My favorite pie is the one I made up - a normal red sauce pizza with ricotta and meatballs on top (you can add oregano or basil if you want too). It's just amazing, almost like a delicious lasagna pizza. The only reason it is not 5 starts is because it is not quite as good as Pupatella, which I gave 5 starts and is the best pizza in the area in my opinion. I have to differentiate them a little bit. If 4.5 stars were an option, I would do that. Service is better here than Pupatella though. read more

Tasty pizza made quick and with lots of flavor - its really the ideal pizza. I especially like the arugula pizza, but you really can't go wrong with any of them. Be warned that they only make 12 inch sized pizzas, which personally is more than enough but if you are extra hungry you might want to buy two. The staff is very friendly and takes notice when you enter and leave, assisting you every step of the way. read more

PIe Tanza has pretty good pizzas and salads. The pizzas are relatively thin with plenty of sauce, cheese, and toppings. The The pizzas aren't the best that I've tasted, but they are pretty good. Salads are large, fresh, and delicious. The iced tea is very good. Pie Tanza is a little over-priced for what it offers.. I agree with previous reviewers that note that Pie Tanza is a decent place-- not special or unique-- but, definitely decent. The main thing that (for me) detracts from my experience at Pie Tanza is the throngs of children that are usually there. It's a yuppie family friendly restaurant....which is fine if you have kids and/or like to be around a lot of kids while you eat. However, if you don't, it can be a little distacting at times. I'm not anti-kid, but I also don't want to eat in an upscale Chuck E Cheese. read more

Might just be the best pizza in Northern VA. Honestly haven't found it's competition. It's thinner crust & from their wood-fired grill with fresh toppings. A bit loud & crowded because of the constant flow of families to from karate & dance studios nearby. My family and I have been going to Pie-Tanza for many years now and never once had a bad experience with our meals or service. Of course it is geared towards a family environment, and is extremely kids friendly. The great thing about Pie-Tanza is that the food is good too - which is rare for family-friendly places. I took several years for me to branch out to the steak sandwich, and its now a favorite alternative to the pizza. The even greater thing about Pie-Tanza is when Jon Stewart went off about the Republicans taking over Pie-Tanza. Even though I have to give it 5 stars for the sheer number of times it has saved my wife and I when we needed to get out for a delicious and quick dinner with the little ones (most notably during the recent Snowpocalypse event), the wine here is not-so-hot. Please upgrade to something a little better if you can. read more
