Today, we got a handful of them delivered to work and they were a huge hit! People could not stop eating them. I had the Strawberry Apple Pie and it was amazing. My coworkers told me that I had to try a piece of each pie, which I would have if my stomach could handle it. The baker himself even came to bring us his pies that he made! Stellar. I drove all the way from Round Rock to South Austin to try their pie based on some web ratings I have seen. It was well worth the time (and Friday night Austin traffic). The apple pie was an excellent two crust version (not the dutch apple that I'm not a fan of) and the peanut butter pie was also awesome. The owner was extremely nice and helpful. I could tell based on our brief conversation that he takes great pride in his work. I only wish he was closer to Round Rock. Guess I'll be putting more miles on the truck. read more

I visited Pie Plante today as part of Austin's Truck and Trailer food festival, Truck By TruckWest. The signature dish for the food competition was a half-slice of pie, naturally and I tried their Apple pie. Figuring, like I once heard said, that if you want to take the measure of a chef, have him make you an egg. the apple pie if the first, most basic pie I can imagine anyone attempting. I figure it's the fried egg of the pie world ;-) The crust was fork-cuttable, flaky, layered and pleasingly moist. No dry, crumbly crust here. this is definitely not a bad crust at all! The apple filling is cinnamon spiced with what you would swear was fine Vietnamese cinnamon ( you bakers know what I mean ) but in fact I am told is not and is part of a clever spice formula that returns that bold, soft-palate opening flavor with other means. I am nearly certain I tasted some nutmeg in there too. And the apples are not one homogeneous type but a mix of several breeds of apple for a flavor that can be slightly different with every bite. Also, the filling is not a thick jellied base like you'd find in a Hostess Fruit Pie but rather hardly more than the apple slices themselves. Austere and sincere. Without distracting sugary embellishment. The topping was a somewhat pedestrian crumble. If it possessed a remarkable culinary technique I didn't detect it. However it was sweet, caramelized and delicious. My wife had the chocolate mousse pie which was very light and airy with a smooth chocolateyness like jello brand pudding but five times more fluffy and less dense. Topped with a fresh whipped cream that tasted as though it were made today. as well. Our friend had a Bourbon Dark Cherry pie that showcased the bourbon flavor surprisingly nicely. While these were no incredible, state-fair winning pies ala "Waitress" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473308/ ) they were nevertheless. FAR and away better than I could ever make. Best description... Heaven in every bite. A great outing to indulge your pie craving or grab dessert after some good food. There are three other trucks with delicious food, including Moroccan. The location is great, right on Oldorf and there is plenty of parking just steps away from a scrumptious pie experience. This place is a bit hard to find but nice little spot. Had the blueberry nectarine pie and it was a little short on crust so I had a couple of crust less bites so that was a bit disappointing.
