When talking about cinematic experiences in the North, let alone the area, one has to shout loud and proud about the IMAX. The IMAX is part of the National Media Museum but deserves it's own proud place in our ever beautiful Yelp listings. It is only one of a handful of IMAX cinemas in the world and it's ours. Go on do a little dance for me, go on. What you get is some unbelievable moments of 3D documentaries and films and also 2D is pretty hot on the massive screen. For me though you have to utilise all of its strengths so definitely check out a 3D option. Especially with the current trend of making everything for the 3D market, you'll soon be spoilt for choice. One of the last Hollywood blockbusters to show there was the last Harry Potter film but I'm more than a little giddy that Alice in Wonderland is next up. I'm so excited about that one that I may need to section myself, sedate myself or run head first into a door. Johnny Depp in 3D and at that size!?! What is not to die happy about? It does get booked up well in advance so make sure you book online or at the museum if you have a specific time in mind. This is how film should be watched, so do yourself a favour and enjoy it to the (I)max. See what I did there, aren't I clever.

I wouldn't actually recommend your first film is one of the IMAX specials such as to fly and dinosaurs etc as they are quite expensive and also very short (usually about half an hour to three quarters of an hour). Much better would be to see a 'proper' film in it's IMAX version - although only a small percentage of films are shot in IMAX, they really do take your breath away. The Dark Knight has some fantastic IMAX scenes, and at Christmas you really, really HAVE to watch The Polar Express at the IMAX and in 3D too! Oh yes, the IMAX is capable of 3D! It's not your average 3D too, it's actually in-your-face, amazing and quite brilliant 3D! We saw the latest Harry Potter at the IMAX, and even though only some of the scenes were in 3D, the end fight with all the magic and explosions was truly breathtaking. My only quibble would be if you are taking young children to watch a 3D IMAX film, they may be a bit overawed by it all and refuse to put on their glasses which will leave them watching them a blurred image which they'll quickly grow bored of (it happened to one of our party) - but otherwise it's a great experience! Bradford Leisure Exchange, Vicar Lane,…read more Bradford , BD1 5LD ADVANCE BOOKING BY PHONE 0871 200 2000 phone booking isnt recommended as it is such a hassle. based in the busy leisure exchange this cinema gets very busy at times so be prepared to queue for the more popular films there are 16 screens, one of which is deluxe for which you pay about a quid more but it does have its own toilet facilities and a bar which isnt normalls stocked and you do have to go out to main bar and order from there which is quite a hassle.the deluxe is comfier and you get more leg room but not many films are shown on it the cinema has full disabled access and spaces for wheelchair users down the bottom of the screens. the screens are quite large and there are up to date speakers and hearing loops in mostthe seats are quite comfy but not much leg room ticket prices vary on which time and day you go but are usually about £5 for kids and students and about £6 for adults, except on wednesdays when most tickets are about £3 for kids and £4 for adults you can buy a card that gives you unlimited monthly access for about £17 which if you are a frequent cinemagoer it is well worth it the food/drink is quite dear but they have just alately began adding cheaper versions of icecreams and vending machines for bottles of pop, which is much better. the staff are always on hand and there are security guards about incase you want help dealing with unruly ignorant cinemagoers.they do a check every so often in each screen which helps

And the Dukes has a fine program of arthouse and independent film that just isn't available anywhere else locally. However they do show popular films and have great Sing a Long nights where they show the Sound of Music etc. This cinema isn't about how much popcorn and coke you can ram down your face, it is about watching good films amongst likeminded people. Add to that the fact you can get a drink from the bar and take it in with you and what more could you want. Support this place and other local businesses. The Dukes is one of the things that makes Lancaster a decent place to live in

I think we've established that Yelp, being the immense concoction of all things Leeds, is…read moretrumpeting the good, the bad and the Indie is a quite frankly fabulous way. Well we also need to mention the inbetween and mass market too. Maybe not as much but here we go, it's the Showcase. When the Showcase opened many years ago now it was well ahead of anything else in the area. It brought mulit-screens to Leeds and all under one roof. However, that was back in the day and when you could buy half penny sweets and munch on flying saucers. Okay it's not that old but it has certainly fallen a bit behind some of the competitors in the area. That said it's not a bad cinema. You'll still get a good choice of big films and reasonable auditoriums but it lacks to punch of some of it's rivals. I find the films tend to be slightly behind the Vue ones and some of the screening areas aren't as big either. The staff are friendly but slightly unhelpful and the savoury snacks are expensive and utter dross. On the plus side, it's free parking and there is plenty of it. You've also got many eateries on site for a quick feed before or after the performance. Not one to avoid but not a place to hurry to either.

The palace cinema used to be a great place to go, but since then they have made what used to be…read morequite a large screen (for a small town anyway) into two separate ones. When it first had its grand reopening it was really busy but on the first showing it was so hot that most people had to leave, one person even fainted! It was much better before they split the screen up. Now it is much too small to enjoy a film as much.. On the upside, it is cheaper than most of the major cinemas and it doesn't get the new blockbusters too much later than the main ones, but obviously can't show as many at once so doesn't get all of them. The seats are comfortable, drink/food is relatively cheap if you compare it to a normal cinema, but still expensive.
