    Vue Lancaster

    Vue Lancaster

As some other reviews have noted, the Vue is one of the major chains of cinemas in the UK. If you…read morewant to see blockbuster movies, this is the place to see them (in Lancaster). For more the niche films, go to the Duke playhouse/cinema, as it is a great alternative. As a student I get discounted tickets all the time, so I can't comment on the high prices of normal times at prime times, but 90% of the time, the Vue gives out more off coupons on your visit for your next visit within the next month. This means if you visit regularly you'll only ever pay full price once or twice, if you plan your visits carefully. The choice of films is decent enough for a 6-screen cinema, and the seating in all of the screens is good. The projection quality is as expected for a non-digital projection, but hopefully within the next few years we might see a screen or two converted to digital (fingers-crossed). The trailers before each film aren't too long, in my opinion, usual around 5 or 6 trailers, and a few preceding adverts. The screen is a moderate size, not overly large or particularly small. This means you won't feel consumed by the large screen if you sit at the front of the standard rows, nor squinting if your at the top (back) row. The refreshments are over-priced, but that is no different to any other chain. The staff are very very good, and I've never had an issue with any of them in the 3 years I've been coming to the cinema. Orange 241 offers are valid here, and can be used for student tickets too, unlike some chains. Finally, the accessibility within the cinema is good, with good ramps and lifts where appropriate. Which is always a good sign for and persons with mobility issues. And the screen always have 2-3 gaps for wheelchairs in the front row. Note: The entrance to the cinema is slightly hidden from the public. It is found down an alleyway, which can be found next to where Woolworths used to be (aka opposite HMV and Starbucks), or from the other side; next to The Litten Tree pub.

Otherwise look at paying over the odds to see a film. All refreshments are expensive as well. If I was you I would toddle down to the Dukes and see what films they are showing. True, you don't get nachos and big comfy seats, but you do get to take your pint in with you while at the same time supporting a local business.

    IMAX - From official website

    IMAX

I'm about to get very giddy now. I'm like a child at Christmas because I'm about to talk about my…read moresecret love affair...film. When talking about cinematic experiences in the North, let alone the area, one has to shout loud and proud about the IMAX. The IMAX is part of the National Media Museum but deserves it's own proud place in our ever beautiful Yelp listings. It is only one of a handful of IMAX cinemas in the world and it's ours. Go on do a little dance for me, go on. What you get is some unbelievable moments of 3D documentaries and films and also 2D is pretty hot on the massive screen. For me though you have to utilise all of its strengths so definitely check out a 3D option. Especially with the current trend of making everything for the 3D market, you'll soon be spoilt for choice. One of the last Hollywood blockbusters to show there was the last Harry Potter film but I'm more than a little giddy that Alice in Wonderland is next up. I'm so excited about that one that I may need to section myself, sedate myself or run head first into a door. Johnny Depp in 3D and at that size!?! What is not to die happy about? It does get booked up well in advance so make sure you book online or at the museum if you have a specific time in mind. This is how film should be watched, so do yourself a favour and enjoy it to the (I)max. See what I did there, aren't I clever.

The IMAX screen has to be experienced to be believed - it really is MASSIVE, and coupled with the…read morefantastic surround sound system and highly ramped seating, you are guaranteed a good view even if an extremely tall man decides to sit in the seat in front of you (don't they always!) I wouldn't actually recommend your first film is one of the IMAX specials such as to fly and dinosaurs etc as they are quite expensive and also very short (usually about half an hour to three quarters of an hour). Much better would be to see a 'proper' film in it's IMAX version - although only a small percentage of films are shot in IMAX, they really do take your breath away. The Dark Knight has some fantastic IMAX scenes, and at Christmas you really, really HAVE to watch The Polar Express at the IMAX and in 3D too! Oh yes, the IMAX is capable of 3D! It's not your average 3D too, it's actually in-your-face, amazing and quite brilliant 3D! We saw the latest Harry Potter at the IMAX, and even though only some of the scenes were in 3D, the end fight with all the magic and explosions was truly breathtaking. My only quibble would be if you are taking young children to watch a 3D IMAX film, they may be a bit overawed by it all and refuse to put on their glasses which will leave them watching them a blurred image which they'll quickly grow bored of (it happened to one of our party) - but otherwise it's a great experience! Definitely a jewel in Bradford!

The Little Theatre - From website

    The Little Theatre

Little by name, little by exterior but certainly not little by nature. This Tardis of a theatre…read morelooks like barely anything from the outside, a narrow bit of building with a sign that makes one whimsical, thinking this is what theatres in urban New York must be like. Once you're inside it might look somewhat dated, it might not have the contemporary architecture or interior design of a lot of bigger, newer theatres these days, but there's a real gutsy David as opposed to Goliath feel to the place and it reminds me of the university theatre my drama group used to borrow for our productions. Yes, I was in a drama group when I was younger, big whoop, wanna fight about it? The Little Theatre just feels homey to me. The decor is rather traditional, the seats are usually red and in the auditorium they're those flippy ones that smack you in the buns when you stand up, and the staff are older than the usual types you get at theatres nowadays but you get the feeling they're working there for a reason - because they care. It's like all those old, beautiful cinemas that have sadly closed down and given way to multiplexes and bingo halls. I hope this never happens to The Little Theatre. People still go there because the stage is more than adequate for any production, be it Shakespeare or family friendly, Miller or Orton, heck, it's practically made for Beckett given the simplicity. And the bar's a really nice well polished area where you can chinwag and grab a nice strong G&T before the show. I think it certainly deserves to be here and alongside Southport's various arts centres and galleries, The Little Theatre stands proud as a symbol of the seaside town's excellent little culture hub. I love it.
