Review Highlights - Hyde Park Picture House

“Gas lamps, an in-house organ and an ornately carved balcony all add to its charm, and it must be one of the few cinemas left in the country where you can choose between balcony (£6) and stalls (£5.”

Xscape Yorkshire is in a great location, just off the M62 in Castleford. It's a great place for…read moreleisure activities or to grab a bite to eat. There are many things to do here, which would certainly be suitable for families, adventure seekers, cinema lovers and co, including Tenpin bowling, a Cineworld Cinema. There is also a gym and rock climbing area. For food and drink, you're also tempted by a wide array of brands including Nando's, Ask Italian and Pizza Express. There is also a Starbucks here, although it didn't look too welcoming. It felt so uncomfortable that they openly admitted they did not trust customers to have food items in the fridges, and kept them all in the back - I totally understand loss prevention but I've never seen any Starbucks locations do this other than this one. The car park is HUGE, it felt way too big, but I'm sure due to the varied things to do and eat here, it can get quite busy, especially in such a peak location, being right off the motorway it makes it easily accessible through all points of the country. PRO TIP: If you're going on a longer journey, make this a stop off to get a bite to eat or something to drink, you have a selection of brands and you're not paying the high prices of motorway service stations. There is a small selection of shops here too, but nothing too special, this isn't really a place you'd come to shop. There's a sporting goods store and a WHSmith Travel location as I could recall, that's pretty much it. 4* - I like this place, it's pretty cool and certainly a good spot for a family day out.

Good shopping/recreational centre but very expensive. Fun for all the family. The 4D golf was a bit…read morerubbish.

I think we've established that Yelp, being the immense concoction of all things Leeds, is…read moretrumpeting the good, the bad and the Indie is a quite frankly fabulous way. Well we also need to mention the inbetween and mass market too. Maybe not as much but here we go, it's the Showcase. When the Showcase opened many years ago now it was well ahead of anything else in the area. It brought mulit-screens to Leeds and all under one roof. However, that was back in the day and when you could buy half penny sweets and munch on flying saucers. Okay it's not that old but it has certainly fallen a bit behind some of the competitors in the area. That said it's not a bad cinema. You'll still get a good choice of big films and reasonable auditoriums but it lacks to punch of some of it's rivals. I find the films tend to be slightly behind the Vue ones and some of the screening areas aren't as big either. The staff are friendly but slightly unhelpful and the savoury snacks are expensive and utter dross. On the plus side, it's free parking and there is plenty of it. You've also got many eateries on site for a quick feed before or after the performance. Not one to avoid but not a place to hurry to either.

because of it's size Showcase always has a good range of films, the individual cinemas vary in size…read moreso that they can show less popular films as well and all are reasonably comfortable. As is often the case with cinema chains it's the catering that lets them down badly, everything is terribly over priced and the service is abysmal (what part of white coffee did he not understand?). Disabled access was good.

I love film, of all different kinds, but mostly I am into a really good foreign film. As you can imagine that makes Leeds International Film Festival a bit of a no brainer for people like me. It hosts a huge variety of film, from animation, shorts, horrors, thrillers - you name it. It has something for every kind of audience, of all ages, of all ethnicities, of all tastes. For this yearly delight a vast number of Leeds venues pull together and get involved, hosting film nights over the course of the festival, and offering a great cultural night out. Really, it is difficult to express how awesome a cultural spectacle it is. Each year it seems to grow in popularity, with a wider range of film and a larger audience. I can only advise that you book mark next years in your diary, lest you miss out. Leeds International Film Festival - making the city the cultural capital that it has become!
