Hyde Park Picture House is a bastion of local culture and experience here in Leeds. It's one of the more long-standing establishments, and being central to Hyde Park, for many it is one of the first experiences you may have if you move here as a student. The building itself is something to behold, a beautiful Victorian building with exquisite features. As a picture house it hosts screenings to some of the most interesting, diverse, challenging and delightful films. Whether it is one of their many foreign extravaganzas, art hosue films, occult classic (and so on) you will feel that visiting this cinema is much more of an experience than your standard box office cinema. Not only do they have the accolade of many a great screening in their timely history, but they even hold cinematic events - often themed, with Halloween for example, so it's well worth checking in every now and then for one of those. I just think there's something magical about sitting and watching a film in a historic building (it's one of the oldest cinemas in the world) with a coffee served by someone who actually gives a crap. If you have a leeds card you get concessionary rate making it half the price of Odeon etc and along with arty stuff and cult old films you'd love to get see at a cinema, they often show films on general release around a month after so you don't miss out. There are a suprising number of places like this hidden away across the North but this is probably one of the nicest - well worth a visit for all sorts of reasons, no excuse!!! read more

Hyde Park Picture House is a really cute, old-style film theatre on a street corner opposite a Sainsburys. There's always a selection of awesome indie films showing at various times (they even show matinee showings of them too). We went to see a black and white film called Frances Ha, which I thought was really great and worth seeing. Outside, the cinema is kind of dusty and run down but inside it exudes charm and warmth, personified by the lovely staff - I had a great conversation with the popcorn vendor guy about how they used to do salty popcorn as well as the current sweet popcorn, and interestingly people used to ask for the two mixed together. You can chose between sitting on the balcony or the stalls. We went for the stalls, and when the curtains opened (!) I was instantly absorbed into the film until it spat me out at the end to regain my senses. It should definitely be more well known than it is as it is a gem, would definitely recommend! read more

The last time I went to the Hyde Park Picture House it was for a Leeds International Film Festival screening of something horror related, back in 2003 or so. And it was a horrid little place which had seating older than me and just felt old. In a bad way old. Not antique. Just old. So when I returned this week for again, another Leeds International Film Festival screening (on the Picture Houses 99th birthday no less), I was very pleasantly surprised. Those old horrid seats are gone and have been replaced by new plush seating. The screen is mid sized compared to the multiplexes of Leeds, but also cleaner with no obvious discolouration. And the audio is top notch. All in all the auditorium part of the Picture House is great! The 'front of house' area where you get to buy popcorn, cups of tea and cake is a little too quaint for me, and whoever did the painting throughout the entire place could have paid a little more attention to detail but I'm just perhaps being snarky and a little too picky at this point. It's a lovely little cinema, but it's no Everyman! read more

If I could come here every week and watch one artsy jewel after another until the end of my days, I would. In a city where it's all about the new, the trendy and the fashionable, it's such a treat to find a place so unreservedly proud of its unbowed shackles to the past. The staff here are not only super friendly and sweet, they truly love their place of work and what it represents. I've come to see films here during Leeds Film Festival and the atmosphere is nothing short of electric. I must echo what Rowena says about the absence of experience from your typical modern-day cinema. There's something almost ceremonial about Hyde Park Picture House. You're greeted by the smiling usher, you stand in an orderly queue at the base of the grand staircase while waiting to be served your refreshments before wandering into the theatre bathed in that wonderful coral glow. You feel the hairs rise up on your arms as the velvet curtains gently part, and you're immediately reminded of your dwelling in the 21st century by the myriad adverts you must endure before the film but hey ho, that's life. This place is perfect for that second date or taking that culture vulture friend of yours from out of town. You'll be talking about it for days afterwards. Gandhi once said that "A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people". I think he was onto something. This weekend, support this fantastic venue and forego the blockbuster film you know you'll probably download illegally at some point anyway (kidding). read more

This cinema turns even a rubbish run of the mill film into an amazing film experience. I would, quite literally, watch almost anything here, just to experience the old school atmosphere created by the intimate theatre style setting and friendly staff. As it is, there is no need to make such a sacrifice as the HPPH's film list always seems to pick the most interesting films that have been released in a given week. A relatively recent highlight for me was watching Cinema Paridiso here - it felt like I was watching the movie from within the movie if that makes any kind of sense! If this is not enough, Cinema Paridiso is also incredibly good value. At £6 a ticket, there really is no excuse so get down and watch a great movie here sooner rather than later. read more

Forget your multiplexes and IMAX, this is the only cinema you ever need to visit in Leeds. Built in 1914, the Hyde Park Picture house looks and feels like a relic from days gone by both inside and out. Gas lamps, an in-house organ and an ornately carved balcony all add to its charm, and it must be one of the few cinemas left in the country where you can choose between balcony (£6) and stalls (£5.50). The cinema screens a selection of new releases as well as arthouse, classic and foreign films, and hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Sing-along sessions to the likes of Rocky Horror obviously bring in huge crowds of students, while filmmaker Q&As and 'Bring your Baby' screenings ensure there really is something to get everyone involved. read more

Leeds Young film festival is 25th March - 5th April. It's their 25th anniversary and kicked off this morning with the classic Studio Gibli film My Neighbour Totoro which was visually beautiful on a large screen. The cinema is a petite, cosy and intimate venue from the ticket box to the lobby to the modest "big screen". There's a great range of drinks and snacks at reasonable prices. I will keep this review as short as I can, put quite simply, I love this cinema. Hyde Park Picture House is a great old fashioned cinema and, to me, the cinema itself looks like it has come straight out of a film. Whenever I visit Leeds I try to get myself over to this cinema and I particularly love coming here during the Leeds International Film Festival. For a film fan like me this place is special. Hyde Park Picture house offers a very different evening out. Personally a film at the Hyde Park Picture house is my ideal night out with my boyfriend. The building still stands as it did in the 1930's with balcony ad swirly vintage staircases still intact. Obviously the film screen is a new addition, and a bloody good one at that! You really do feel transported back in time when you view a film at the picture house, which can be a little surreal when watching a very current chick flick! Films range from a selection of the best current releases with at least one art house film or silent movie on always. This adds a little variety if you are bored of the films that your local odeon pumps through every month! To make it even better, ticket prices work out at about the same as larger chains of cinema so watching a film here is an absolute win, win! As if it couldn't get any better Hyde Park Picture House holds events such as live music gigs (Jeffrey Lewis played in June) and sing-a-long events (Rocky Horror fancy dress this month!) Situated near the gorgeous Hyde Park and many dainty cafes and vintage shops make the picture house a very popular venue (especially among students). read more

Built in 1908 as a hotel, later (1914) converted to a picture house as it has remained ever since, prevailing storms of having its inners destroyed by conversion into corner shops or student housing. The picture house retains original features such as gas lamps, sweeping staircase and stained glass windows. Friendly and helpful staff will greet you, sometimes allowing a sneak around to look at more of the building. Films on offer are largely art house, foreign, limited release, classic and, more recently, the odd major releases or two. Screenings include an interval where you can purchase reasonably priced confectionary. Resisting conversion and staying true to being a traditional picture house this is not the most comfortable of places to sit through a film but the overall ambience - and select choice of films - far surpasses this slight discomfort. Overall a brilliant asset to Leeds and the Hyde Park area, now hosting films from the film festival. Hyde Park Picture house literally makes you feel like you are stepping back in time to go to the movies....absolutely tiny and authentic with a small screen, original red velvet chairs and even a gold decorated balcony.... You won't find many major box office hits playing here, but what you will find is artsy independent films and films that feel even cooler to watch in these surroundings. The staff are always so lovely and polite and really make you feel welcome. I'd recommend visiting here just for the surreal factor. read more

Hmm. I went to the Hyde Park Picture House a couple of times, a few years ago, and I think I may have caught fleas. I like the idea of an artsy cinema slap bang in the middle of Hyde Park, but the problem with this place is it tends to be frequented by pretentious students. Having said that, the Back To The Future marathon was wicked. Even though I got cramp because the seats are very uncomfortable. Actually, I don't know if I like it here or not. __________ I came here on Sunday for the first time in years to see a preview showing of 'Precious' (dead good film), and it was cosy and comfy and atmospheric and ace so I'm changing my review from 3 stars to 5. I am a massive fan of this small independent cinema. From the small ticket kiosk at the entrance to the huge old clock in the theatre, to the fact that they serve earl grey tea along side the really good popcorn. The seats are comfortable in a squidgy, homely way. The tickets are £5.50 or £6 for the balcony seats, the view is good from both. There is just one screen and they show both old classics and current gems. I saw Burn After Reading and The Reader here. But they also do occasional special events, and Mark Kermode is coming later in the month to record a Radio 5 Live film show. It pays to join their mailing list! I would always chose to see a film here rather than at any of the corporate multiplex cinemas. Well worth a visit. read more

Wonderful arthouse cinema located in the middle of the suburban area of Hype Park. A real iconic building and housing one screen you have to be paying attention to make sure you don't miss a showing you want to see here. Visiting is a must do once you have found the cinema located by the Jacksons on the 56 and 752 bus routes and about 25 minute walk from the city centre. I believe it is owned and managed by the City council and part of the Leeds International film festival still. This place is unique and iconic. You should hang you head in shame if you live in Leeds and have never been. read more

Very popular amongst students, probably due to it's location and type of films shown (think arty and foreign) the Hyde Park Picture House is a dazzling piece of history and a very welcome addition to the cultural heritage of Leeds. The only problem that I have sometimes found when visiting is the seating is somewhat hit or miss - while most people (myself included) tend to aim for the balcony, you will find that the seats downstairs offer a much better view of the screen. Definitely a recommended venue if you fancy your cinema without all the bells and whistles of Hollywood :) read more

When I first moved to Leeds I rode by the Hyde Park Picture House on the bus and got oh so excited to see such a beautiful old indy cinema so close to where I lived. Unfortunately, I've only made it to a film here ONCE!. But the experience was great. I felt like I'd gone back in time sitting in my plush seat. The atmosphere was fantastic and they always have an amazing selection of films. They even have special film screenings of old films, horror films, etc. This place is a theatre for people who truly love film. read more

Awesome little cinema with good student rates. I went to see 'Let the Right One In' (an arty independent film) and it certainly felt like the right venue for it. It's small and theatrical inside, very novel. A more fun experience than a commercial cinema. read more

There is nothing like this cinema in the whole of Leeds. For starters, it's only got one screen. Yep, one. Though, that doesn't stop it showing cool older films for matinees and the best in contemporary commercial and alternative film. The staff are kindly, the tickets are around five pounds but it's the musty, old-worldliness of the place that you go for that and the delightfully cheesy early 90s adverts. They don't even care if you bring in your own drinks and sweets! If you're feeling a bit peckish afterwards, it's situated almost next door to the undisputed pizza kings of Hyde Park Pitza Cano. read more

This is a completely different experience to going to the usual multiplex cinema today. You can tell by everything: the building, the staff, the decor, the vibe from the clientele - that the Hyde Park Picture House is all about a labour of love, created and staffed by enthusiasts. It really makes a difference when you go to see a little known cult or art flick to see it here. Sure if you search around you could find it at some megacorp operation - but it's about so much more than that here. Everything - the icecream on your lap, the whispers before curtain up, the rustle of the Guardian as you earwig in on cultured conversations (with perhaps just a smidgen of Strictly Come Dancing and credit crunch mixed in) - it all feeds in to an experience that goes beyond the start and finish of the film. That faintly amateur vibe - 'amateur' in the sense of its root word meaning 'love' - is what makes it so great. Plus, for us philistines, the toilets are tolerable and the icecream is terrific! read more

A gorgeous little kirsch cinema with orgiinal fitting ets. Quite frequently shows older movies and is the perfect place to go to experience an old movie in what is close to the original atmosphere it was screened. Prices too are reasonable, certainly no more than a more modern cinema. Cute refreshments kiosk too. One tip though - bring your coat because it can sometimes be cold in there. read more

This is the best cinema in Leeds. It shows a great selection of films from small independent movies and world cinema to the better end of the hollywood output. I've turned up a few times without checking what's on and just bought a ticket to the film. Its the sort of cinema that will only show good films so you can't go wrong. The prices are quite a bit cheaper than the multiplexes for tickets, sweets and drinks, which helps at the moment. The staff are always really friendly and helpful. I cant recommend this cinema enough. So next time you wanna see a film, make a trip to the Hyde Park Picture House! read more

+ I really really like this cinema. I've seen some good films in this place. I've even paid to watch foreign language films here as i know they would be good quality selections. The place has widened my cinematic experience and i'm not even a film buff. Plus the people that come to the cinema have come to watch the film so you are guaranteed concentration and quiet. I like the olde worldliness of the place too. It doesn't seem like the 21st century has arrived which in this case is not a bad thing - I wish the girl i invited to watch the film Performance (1970) with actually turned up. The Hyde Park Picture House is one of the country's few remaining old-style cinemas, complete with interval, ice cream seller and swinging red curtains. It shows a fantastic mixture of new films and arthouse films so there's something for everyone and it even puts on special nights occasionally where they show films like all the Back To The Futures back to back. We went at Christmas time to see 'It's a Wonderful Life' and if ever a film was suited to this type of cinema it was this. It's just a shame it wasn't snowing outside to complete the romantic scene. I live pretty much opposite the Vue on Kirkstall Road and the Hyde Park Picture House beats it hands down. The grand old building is much nicer than the identikit chain cinemas so it feels like an occassion when I'm off to the talkies, just like the olden days, when things were better. Probably. I don't know, I'm twenty-four. Even before the film starts, as they cut straight to the trailers, I'm in a much happier frame of mind because I don't have to sit through half an hour of tedious i-phone adverts. There's also the comical 'please switch your phone off' public announcement that looks like it's been designed by a tourette's sufferer with Powerpoint. There's nothing not to love about the Hyde Park Picture House, not only is the place beautiful, showing independent film and breathing life into the small cinema business that slowly has found itself killed by large commercial cinema industries, but the The Hyde Park Picture House is simply a lovely place to be, the atmosphere is friendly, it's a comfortable environment for students, film lovers and families.
