This is possible the most frustrating cinema on earth. Having bought my tickets online - and begrudgingly paid an astonishing £7 - for the latest Harry Potter film, my friend and I found ourselves trapped in a never-ending labyrinth of escalators, promotional displays and condescending staff as we attempted to find the correct screen. The 13 screens are laid out in a way that makes no sense at all, and at every twist and turn the cinema never misses the opportunity to sell you something else. Popcorn? Hotdog? Cuddly toy? Once we finally made it to the right screen we then had to sit through what felt like hours of low-quality adverts for local businesses. The film started late as people were still cramming in, and the usher had the nerve to ask people who'd got their early and bagged prime spots to move up to the outside seats so latecomers could sit together. Although the actual showing of the film was fine once it started and the seats were passably comfortable, I will think long and hard before choosing to visit this cinema again. read more

Once upon a time this cinema was fantastic; and then time took it's toll. And now it's not. Why you ask? 1. The screens, which once were brand new, are now old. I don't believe (or at least you'd never guess to look) that these have ever been replaced/cleaned, and there are a number of them that have fairly significant discolouration in the form of huge dark spots. Having a "Sony 4K digital cinema experience" means absolutely nothing at all when the screen been projected onto are stained. 2. The sounds, which ring out over light fixtures which still have old Ster Century logo's on, promise amazing Dolby 'Profound Sound'. This would be fine except for again, it's like this was set up on day 1 of the cinema opening and hasn't been looked at since. A number of the screens have audible distortions, which really irritates. Equally, because the walls are so thin, when you have loud showings of an action movie next to showings of more emotional quieter movies, then there is bleed. This is unforgivable. 3. The seats, which much like the light fittings, all are emblazoned with Ster Century Logos and all at least 10 years old. Which means that lots of them sag. Or are just plain uncomfortable. Except the new VIP seats! Which are a few quid more per seat. You might think that VUE could invest this extra money into replacing all of the seats with Super VUE Stepped Seating. 4. The Prices of tickets go up in price what seems like 4 times a year, but not only this VUE have seen fit to introduce new categories of ticket... Like the Over 18 Ticket, where VUE promise that for an extra couple of quid on the ticket price you'll get to experience movies without distraction. I'm not being funny when I say that a) that's what I pay you for in the first place - why aren't you doing your jobs kicking idiots who are making noise out? And b) invariably, the people who are being noisy, irritating and obnoxious are generally over 18! So your plan's failed. 5. The staff are obviously all lobotomised. Or just incapable. 6. The popcorn is abysmal! There once was a time that it was moderately priced, tasted YUM and was worth eating. Now you're about 50% likely to get stale old cold popcorn that's about 15 hours old. OK, so perhaps I was a little on the mean side before. It still sometimes feels like a maze in the Vue, but having been back a few times it's not so bad. (Perhaps I know my way around a little better now!) I came recently to watch another film as part of the Leeds International Film Festival 2011 and had a pretty good time. The film was great, so it's awesome that Vue get involved in the festival, and the director was even present to give a small introduction before the film -a treat I had not expected! The seats are comfy, and weren't allocated on my last visit thank goodness, however it's still pricey enough. If you're considering purchasing anything from the edibles section be prepared to lose the best part of a tenner. Although I preferred the layout of the City Varieties, that's more than likely because it's a proper theatre as opposed to simply a cinema, though in general the seat spacing really does mean you can see from most spots - no matter how big a head is sat in front of you. All in all, on an Orange Wednesday, I'm happy enough to come here for a viddy at the cinny. Pretty decent place to come for most of your viewing needs. Not so sure they do that many non-blockbuster bits, but to be honest I haven't checked... read more

Well, there's probably not a lot of difference between cinema venues, so it's pretty restrictive to reviews.. however, I was here on a Monday evening and there was probably only about 15 people maximum in the screen we were in.. so why do they insist on the allocated seating?? I can understand on weekends where its busy, or new releases etc.. but not when it's dead. Also less points from me for the ridiculous price of drinks & snacks.. if the independent venues can do it cheaper then I'm pretty sure Vue could! read more

Pretty much what you would expect for a big chain cinema reasonably expensive, yet they are usually clean, good sound and picture quality. My big reservation about the vue is the blatant push to force people into buying the VIP seats with seat allocation just being a pain at times I understand the need for a big new release but most of the time its a pointless exercise with the allocation being a pain which personally I usually ignore for example going to see Arthur christmas despite most of the cinema being empty our allocated seats were right next to another family. I really like this cinema...absolutely huge, escalators everywhere and even more pic n mix....I like the whole busy, bustling vibe of this cinema. The only rubbish thing is having to queue at the food counter as you do in the Kirkstall Road venue. It's rubbish because if you're on a diet, you literally will pile on the pounds due to the vst amount of hotdogs, popcorn and chocolate toffee crisp popcorn you WILL be swayed to buy... With Hyde Park Picture House located only 20mins from the city centre, and Kirkstall's the Vue a short, easy drive away for Headingley, it isn't often I go to the Vue cinema in the city centre! After watching films in a vintage cinema and getting used to the old fashioned,relaxed vibe, getting back into the feeling of watching a film in the hustle and bustle of the city centre was quite a shock!! Even on a week night The Light, Vue cinema seems heaving and is quite a change from the quieter cinema at Kirkstall. The price of my ticket surprised me at £5.80 for a student which is a little pricier than Hyde Park also. Once you get past the mob of people and Vue's attempt to sell you any sweet food possible, one will find that their seat is extremely comfy, the staff very friendly and quality of the screen and sound are superb! I saw new release "The Soloist" here last week. The sound was absolutely mind blowing. In addition to this I didn't need to readjust my position throughout the whole film at all as my seat was very comfortable!! If you go this cinema try a later screening, mid week or during the day time to avoid the crowds so you can sit back and enjoy a brilliant quality of movie screening. read more

This cinema is very much a chain cinema, there's many in the Vue catalogue, and they're all pretty much carbon copies of each other. Decide what you will if this is a positive or negative. From the outside it's all very futuristic, lots of metal and glass. It looks good, it looks clean, it's a bit chilly with the air conditioning on full whack, but it's ok, it's cold outside and I've wrapped up in weather appropriate attire. Once you've worked your way through the escalator maze it's all rather simple. You can hit the queues for a ticket, or you can use the self service machines. Unlike pre ordering tickets, using the self service machines doesn't incur a charge. However if you use the self service machine and don't use a cashier, you don't get the money off vouchers. But they only last a week, and I'd rather miss the queues than save a quid for a week. However, the choice is yours. Tickets run a bit steep price wise, £6.80 per adult at peak time. There are concessions available for Seniors and Students, and the ubiquitous family ticket is also available. You look around once you've got your ticket and there's the standard food and drink outlets, all cleverly laid out to entice the masses with that cinema sweet popcorn smell, and sheer size of the big gulp. I will admit I did recoil in sheer horror at the price of the various food and drink and ice-cream and hotdogs and whatever else is available. My tip would be to take a record bag and not a rucksack (don't want to attract too much attention) and fill said record bag with a bag of snacks and a drink. If you get lost working your way to the screen, then do as I did and grab a bod in uniform, play daft, and get them to guide you on your way. Once you're actually in the viewing screen, the seats are reasonably comfortable, there's a cup holder and my personal prerequisite, LEG ROOM!!!! The sound is as good as you'd expect from the large cinema chain, and the screen quality is pretty damn good also. The let down for me is the £7 price tag and the over inflated prices of the food and beverage outlets. However you're smack bang in Leeds, and there's a Sainsbury's just around the corner. Whilst I certainly didn't have any of the other problems mentioned in other reviews - bad sound, rude staff or filthy toilets - It's a cinema. Not a particularly nice one, but at the end of the day we got our tickets and overpriced drinks and saw a movie. The movie was sh*t but that's not the cinema's fault! My only concern was the lack of staff. There was 3 movies starting within ten mins of each other and only one person on the counter selling tickets and all food and drinks. The wait to get inside made us quite anxious even though we all know that the start time means 15-20 minutes of ads and trailers before your actual movie begins.. read more

This used to be the Ster Century cinema, and the lighting and seating haven't changed since it was bought by the Vue chain. If you're an Elite cardholder (i.e. the Light's loyalty card scheme), then you can get student prices on tickets on a Monday and Tuesday, and obviously they do Orange Wednesdays so if you time it right you can bag yourself cheaper tickets. The queues for tickets and for refreshments tend to get very very long at peak times, so it's worth booking in advance and using the machine to pick up your tickets instead. I like coming here on a Sunday when city centre parking's free, and also it's less busy so there are more seats to choose from. The armrests don't adjust though, unlike the Vue in Kirkstall, so no cuddling in the back row : P read more

Cinema in Leeds city centre offering multiplex viewing of the highest quality. Set inside a shopping mall, with about 12 screens showing the newest releases, this place is the only place to go really, and the tickets are a steal if you go during the day. Slightly odd layout, with entrance to the screens up about four elevators, but once you get in the seats are big and comfy and auditoriums generally quiet and not too busy. The popcorn and hotdog/drink combos, however, are as expensive as ever, and make you wonder how anybody in their right minds would pay £6.50 for some reconstituted meat in a bread roll and some flavoured, carbonated water. Very odd. Stay away. From the hot-dogs, that is. The cinema's great. read more

The price is a little bit steep, even for students, but you're always given a voucher when you buy a ticket for the next time so that can make things easier - and of course, they accept Orange Wednesdays! The screens are very clean, and despite being a thin, tall building, it's not too bad going up all the escalators to your screen! (There's also a lift for those who can't manage stairs). The staff are very nice and helpful, and of course you don't need me to tell you not to buy food in a cinema, unless you want a large hole in your wallet! read more

Very handy for city centre. Comfortable seating. Plenty of eating places in the same building, and an indoor car park, so you can drive there, eat and see a film and never leave the building. On the same floor as the cinema there is a very good chinese restaurant read more

In general cinemas are pretty rubbish nowadays, however, both vue cinemas in Leeds are vile and disgusting. On a good day the toilets are marginally worse than a festival porta-loo. On a bad day I'd recommend contacting the infectious diseases centre. Staff didn't care, no courtesy, no smile, no consideration. I complained to the manager directly in the Kirkstall Rd vue and was directed to their website where complaints are easier to dismiss. However, there isn't a great deal of choice, Showcase isn't much better and it means driving a fair dsistance. The independent cinemas seem to maintain an alternative film schedule and sometimes I want to see mainstream films. Bleak prospects for cinemas imo. read more

I've been going to Vue for quite some time now and I see my visit yesterday being the last. They now have 'allocated seating' so gone are the days of strolling in and getting your favourite seat. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to be sat beside a couple..I could have ended up beside a group of young annoying teenage boys but someone else got the short straw on that one (just something to be aware of - it could happen to you) Another thing which put me off was the 'resident bouncer' who's job was to make sure everyone had indeed sat in their allocated seats, but also carried out random ticket checks. That doesn't even happen on buses these days! I think for the price of tickets to see a movie is bad enough, but when you're being told where to sit to, makes me think my future movies wil be downloaded and viewed in the comfort of my own lounge. ps. I didn't mind this theater as much as everyone else, but it still doesn't excuse the projectionist for being an idiot. I've worked in this business and it does get frustrating but make sure the film is in frame before you leave the booth. Aftr what seemed like 29 min of ads and previews the film started and spending the extra 1 pound something on the VIP seats was well worth it. Everything else is what you would expect from a bug theater company like vue so it was like every other theater I've been too. Over all is was clean the sound quality was good and one they got it into frame the picture was good as well. Since it's in town and sometimes the bus is more my speed when ice is on the road I will come here again but the vue on kirkstill has digital projectors, so I know which theater I prefer! read more

Wednesday night, Date Night! The Orange deal they have 2-4-1 on cinema tickets makes this a night to look forward to. This however is the only time I tend to come to Vue, as ordinarily ticket prices, even with a student card are extortionate. I went to see an over 18 viewing of Lovely Bones the other week and it cost £9, for a cinema ticket, what a joke. Food prices differ not; a popcorn and drink will leave you with around £10 less in your pocket. This place is extremely over priced, yet still people crowd in here. There's just something this corporate chain has managed to do, trick people into spending an abnormal amount of money of a film screening, amazing. I do love this cinema however, its perfectly located in The Light which means if you're too early you can shop around for a bite to eat, Nando's, Cafe Rouge, take your pick. Also a spot of shopping maybe? you've got Joy, Body shop and so on. This is a very nice centre and the perfect location for a quite night at the cinema. Only recommendation is, if your going on a Wednesday the cue is bound to be falling down the escalators, so do plan ahead and think about cinema times i.e. don't turn up 10 minutes before thinking you will get a ticket! read more

This is the only cinema in the centre of Leeds and is a good cinema which is inside the Light shopping centre. Like some cinemas in an effort to reduce costs there is no ticket desk and instead you can either buy tickets from a machine in the foyer or at one of the food stands (or online in advance). The cinema has plenty of choice and the seats are comfortable enough. The cinema does get fairly busy particularly at weekends and school holidays and it can be annoying if there is a group of kids making noise during the film. The cinema is fairly clean but like most cinemas there are usually drinks containers and popcorn scattered around. A good cinema in an excellent location but can busy. read more

Vue in The Light is a huge cinema with multiple screens in central Leeds, situated in the Light mall. It has very very expensive refreshments, nice clean toilets (and lots of them) and pleasant staff. The mall has the usual retail outlets and some nice cafes if you want some java before the film. I guess that's basically what you want from a non-art cinema these days. It is a bit anonymous and soulless as far as vibe goes but in a mainstream cinema I don't really care about that, I don't know about you. When I go to see Mamma Mia I just want to sing along, along with a couple of thousand other people, while munching chocolate covered peanuts. Nothing wrong with that. read more

Awful cinema, awful food, awful staff! Like other Vue cinemas you can't buy Orange Wednesday tickets at the self service machines so have to queue in the refreshements line. Was very noisy in there and when I asked for tickets to X-Men: First Class I nearly got tickets for Pirates of the Carribean! Was then given the wrong size nachos which were cold, soggy and vinegary by the time we got in the screen. Staff picked our seats for us which is just annoying as the screening was no where near sold out and it meant everyone was all bunched up at one side of the cinema. The place was dirty and old, the lights didn't dim much for the film and the sound and picture quality wasn't that good. read more

Terrible cinema. The cinema is way overpriced and the staff are incredibly rude. The food and ticket prices cost more than their competitiors. During my visit the toilets were out of service and I was refused entry as a student even though I am a student because my university decided not to put an expiration date as my course can last anywhere from 3-5 years. I explained this to the member of staff called Russell and showed my course only started 2 years ago (as it has a start date) but he was stubborn and clearly power crazy like people in small roles can be and refused to give me the discount I deserved. I have never had an issue using my card with any other store/cinema over the past two years. Avoid this cinema at all cost. read more

I took my eight year old grandson to see the Smurfs movie in late August. We have been before and it was OKish. We would have gone to the Everyman but this particular film wasn't showing. I paid extra for the VIP seats which are a lot roomier than the standard ones. I expected a lot of noise as it was a kids film but not babies in arms yelling their heads off. Kids were running around with no check from parents and there were no cinema attendants to reign the kids in. The worst part was the lavatories. The ladies was a disgrace, over half of them were unusable, there was toilet paper everywhere and because of the mess there was a long queue of people with kids waiting to use the cleaner toilets. During the film I was very aware of unaccompanied kids running in and out, obviously they were playing in the toilets and causing havoc. I spoke to an attendant in the foyer on leaving who all but yawned at me and said he would 'go have a look'. There seems to be a reasonably big workforce I would have thought it possible to keep the toilets clean - other cinemas do, but these people didn't give a damn! After all in this day and age we wouldn't expect parents to take responsibility for their kids behaviour, would we? read more

Vue at The Light is a decent enough cinema - comfy seats, big screens, lots of them etc - but it's only ok. My main gripes are that it's always full of kids hanging around (even if they're not going to a film) and that you have to pay for parking - better to go to Vue in Kirkstall or the Showcase in Birstall as you get free parking. Food is also extortionately expensive, but I guess that's the same at any cinema. One good thing about it before it changed to Vue was that you used to be able to book seats in advance, so you could be sure that you wouldn't be sat up the front with a crick in your neck - I'm not sure you can still do that but, if you can, that's definitely a plus point. read more

The Vue cinema located in the Light right in the heart of Leeds city centre is a medium sized cinema on the top floor accessed by escalators so if you have a disability or you have a child and a buggy it is probably not the best one to visit. It is very modern and the screens are a good size and the staff are lovely. My one gripe is how expensive it is, for myself and my fiance to go the tickets alone are £12 and then if you add drinks and popcorn this can easily be £20. We can have a take away and own the DVD for this..it puts us off coming! Lower your prices vue it's a credit crunch and you can't make £200 off every screening! read more

The only cinema where I've ever had my bag searched before going into a screening. On another occasion when I had a holdall with me (heading for a train after the film), staff told me I could either hand over my bag for them to look after, or I would have to miss the film. Gets busy on Fri-Sat evening and weekend lunchtimes; but no worse than other chain cinema experiences, I suppose. read more
