I made the appointment through Roper/Whirlpool to fix a heating issue in my dryer. I had two choices of contractors who could get the job done, but my only other choice didn't have their service fee listed. I went with Dennis Pickett because the service fee was $105. While that was already hefty because it's 25% of what I initially bought the dryer for 4 years ago, I was thankful to know how much I'd be charged as long as it was a minor issue (little did I know...) I was told I'd get a call from him yesterday to give me a more specific time that he'd come between 8 and 4pm today, but I had to call him and leave a message midday today to make sure he was still coming. I did get a call back thankfully with a 10-15 min warning but when he found out the issue was the line getting blocked up and then the dryer overheating and causing a thermal cut off or something (?) and not the thermal fuse or heating element, he told me (through my tenant, instead of calling me directly) that he would charge me $180-190. When I questioned this, I was told he would take $15 off but it would still be $170 because $105 service charge + $20 part + $45 labor. This is absolutely baffling. He also wanted my card before he did the work but said this was only an estimate. Plus I had to really dig for details on what was wrong with the dryer in the first place and had to deliberately ask for the breakdown of these charges because the information was never offered to me. Never have I ever heard of anyone charging extra for labor on top of the service fee unless it was a much bigger job than expected. It took him less than 30 minutes to fix. He was defensive when I questioned this so I'm out $170 for a standard dryer issue. At least the dryer seems to be heating up again for now, will update if anything changes. read more
