Such a beautiful store with exquisite merchandise! This was definitely a feast for the eyes. I loved the different displays and variety of items for sale. It was a little pricey but really not too bad for the quality. It was very nice, clean, and aesthetically pleasing. The sales lady was ringing up a customer as I walked in and was in a friendly discourse with her. I had to return to my room, which was nearby in the Atterdag Inn. This is one of my favorite go to boutique every time I'm in town!!. The store is decorated so beautifully like shabby chic meets sparkly nature. Every item is so unique and you can tell that the owner takes her time to meticulously pick out everything she sells and strategically places it. The prices are reasonable and service is outstanding! A poet wrote that "Good fences make good neighbors," and this is about the friendliest fence around. SInce we always go to the bakery next door, Mortensen's, home of some of the best baked goods in Solvang, we also go to Picket Fences. It is a kind of wonderland of table top still lives, suggesting pleasant living. Viewing the merchandise never fails to give me relaxed and uplifted experience. I liked that the owner went right to Thanksgiving decor, and skipped what is now the ubiquitous Halloween decor (even though I love Halloween). It flowed more naturally with the kind of pale and glittery aesthetic of the store's merchandise. It is surprising that there are so many thiings here not just to please the eye, but also to potentially please friends and relatives as small gifts and mementos. The pumpkins made from tweedy material, the glittery pumpkins on a table, the handcrafted books, and specialty leather purses all provided delight to the eye. The rose pillows, and soft sweet baby gifts provided sighful inspiration. After much pleasant examination and contemplation, I chose a gorgeous Tuscan cotton dish towel, and I think my honey even got some presents for me! I'm such a sucker for this kind of store - really a mix of home decor, jewelry, inspirational signs, angels, pigs, rustic furniture, baby gifts - you name it, it's pretty much there. Out of the three of us on our girly trip, I was the only one who didn't buy anything here (I'm trying REALLY HARD not to buy THINGS this year). Girlfriend #1 bought a beautiful handmade glass sea star. Girlfriend #2 bought a little sign that talked about our friendship over the years. I am in love with this place! After losing my store (Rose In The Woods) in the San Simeon earthquake, I appreciate a great store. And a buyer's eye who can choose things for everyone. Leanne the owner happened to be there and was so hospitable and friendly, I felt as if I had made a friend when I walked out the door. My friend and I strolled through Solvang and definitely Picket Fences is the place to visit! You won't be disappointed. The little store has a spirit of love that fills each corner. There is a song by Jewel that says ~LIGHT just knows how to fill a room~ and that is the only way that I can describe it. From whimsical to romantic, linens, jewelry, furniture, gifts... you won't be disappointed. If I had been alone and had the right check book I would have had a hay day in there! Lucky for me I left that one at home! But I literally could have spent hours in there talking to Leanne and walking out with a few bags of treasures! It is the kind of store that makes the world go away, that if you walk in for a perfect gift for a special person, you WILL find the gift. This place shares a building with Mortenson's bakery.....which is a favorite of mine, so I love buying a Petit Four and strolling in to Picket Fences as I take my last bite. (petit fours are small ok?!?) Their stuff is shappy chic/french. The type of beautiful things that you love to look at. The type of things that make you think you could simply re-do your home in that style. The type of things that smell lightly of rose or lavendar, but cost an arm and a leg. The type of things you never end up buying because although the things are beautiful...they are useless. "Really....", I think to myself, "Do I NEEEED that pink glass tea light holder with mini hearts on it?" No. "But it is soooo pretty". This is where my boyfriend takes my hand and leads me out of the store. About 3 min. later I have completely forgotten that I wanted anything there. I was shopping in Picket Fences today - despite a statewide mandate, there was a family allowed inside the shop without wearing masks. The store owner and another "employee" were also not wearing masks. The person/worker behind the desk was conversing with the family saying she didn't believe in vaccines nor mask- My mother had to subsequently leave the shop-- I questioned the employee and store owner about providing a safe environment for their clientele - the person behind the counter informed me she did not, in fact, work for the store and was a visitor. Another person (friend of theirs, I guess) let me know that I didn't have to shop there-- I agreed and walked out. read more

This was our last stop on our little excursion last Thursday, what a lovely store, the merchandise runs from shabby chic to french country, the colors in whites, cool blues, greens, yellows, and teals... the ambiance is relaxing and you feel comfortable strolling through the store looking at all the trinkets. They had a section specifically for weddings and babies, some clothing such as a very cute Pink checkered flannel shirt. I approached the owner and asked her how long she's been in business and she said sixteen years, I told her this was my first visit and we shared a chuckle over my surprise that the store had been there that long, because I'd never been there before. As a new customer, I can honestly say I will be back, the owner was very personable and chatted with us as we shopped. Prices are average to most gift/home decor shops in the area. Darling one of a kind unique shop, with a lovely lady servicing us. I bought many sweet gifts for our future great-granddaughter, things I haven't seen anywhere else. Also a few gifts for others.
