Probably never fully opened up since Covid. Little Asian man that my 4 year old reminded her of grandpa. We got an order of fish and chips, coleslaw, and fried oysters. Fish wasn't bad, could use a hefty pinch of salt. Fries were too soggy, but the oysters were good. Coleslaw was ok. Next time I would try the fried clams, IF we ever go back. Quaint little old school place that I just had to give a try. Very simple menu that has a varied choice of seafood items along with some chicken items too. The food is hot and fresh, cooked to order in front of you as you wait. The service is quick with no nonsense. Everything here is fried so if you are looking for something baked, grilled or broiled; this place is not for you. They provide malt vinegar and salt for the fries along with hot sauce and other packaged condiments. Be aware, this place is take out only. The positive reviews puzzle me. Yes, it is cheap. No, it is not good. Unlike most chip shops I have been to, the fish and potatoes sit in the oil for a very long time. Once out of the oil, the fish and chips are drained but not put anywhere to get more oil off. Despite my attempts to communicate to the cook (and sole employee) my desire for actually crisp potatoes (including miming putting them back when he first took them out), they were soggy, greasy, and under cooked. I've passed by this place for years and finally decided to give it a try. I want to support small hole-in-the-wall businesses and the fact that this has been around for so long it's gotta be pretty good, right? Well... It's to go only, so by the time I got home about 15 minutes had passed, so I understand my fish and chips might have gotten slightly soggy in the box during that time, so I won't fault them for that. But this is the saddest order of fish and chips I've ever had in my life. No seasoning, both fish and chips look under-fried, super pale in color...no tartar sauce included. I was literally the only customer in the shop so you'd think a little more attention would be given. I went to Piccadilly's about 40 years ago and then again about 20 years ago. I had forgotten about their fish and chips until I saw them from the 14th floor of my window at the Holiday Inn on Van Ness and was excited to walk down memory lane. When I got there on a Sunday afternoon, an older guy was there; the place was empty and for a moment I had second thoughts. I ordered 3 pieces fish and chips, but I think the owner charged me for 4 pieces and I got 4 pieces. It was good but I think my tastebuds have changed over the years. I'm not really a deep fried kind of person anymore. I asked for the fries and the fish to be boxed up separately so they wouldn't get soggy. I came back after maybe 10 years, but unfortunately, it wasn't how I remembered it. The fish was soggy and lacked flavor, and the fries were just as bad. The fish is a about the thickness of a banana peel and incased in a mountain of tempura batter. Look at some of the more recent pictures on here and you'll see what I mean. Frozen Tilapia is already an inexpensive substitution to the traditional Cod, so to skimp on it after downgrading to Tilapia is just pathetic. The fish as well as the chips were soggy and undercooked, neither were even golden brown. Ok, my daughter just moved into tha Tenderloin and we where looking for something to eat. We were craving fish..and this place was open. When we walked in, the owner (Kang) greeted us with a huge smile that showed through his mask. He explained that the fish they serve is 100% Cod. Great, cause I'm hungry. I ordered the Cod n fries, the Shrimp n onion rings, and an extra order/ al a carte of the Cod. There food was really good and plentiful. The onion ring batter was not clumpy. Tempura style. The fries are cut right there and fried crispy on outside and soft and warm on the inside. The restaurant is small and after Covid will have inside seating, again. I was on a 3 day trip to San Francisco & told myself I would leave a review for all the places visited & hospitality we received on our time here. If you're interested in other recommended spots in the SF area , check my other reviews. FYI, I don't go to these places for what's "in", what is "over the top". I found these places according to their history & years of experience, wanting to try the more honest flavors of this dynamic & colorful city. With that being said , we found this place because of how long it's been around. Naturally , we were looking for a good hole-in-the-wall place we could get fish food at & not have it be some ridiculous price. Especially because oysters & crab aren't usually "cheap". For about $8-10 each, we had an order of fried oysters & fries & the other fried crab & fries. Was it good ? Yes! A lot of people complain nowadays for it not being "special"-- you know what's special? Pound for Pound food. Food you know is great for the price being paid PLUS the fact that it's a place that's been around for a long time. I was so happy to see Piccadilly operating during these insane times because this was my go-to spot for satisfying my fish & chips cravings when I used to live in the Tenderloin. Even after 5 long years, I can confirm -- this place is still adored and reputed to be a hidden gem in the deep depths of the Loin. You'll be in for a glutenous treat -- that ahh moment when you sink your teeth into the crispy exterior to get to the moist cod meat will always have me coming back. A huge plus: Chef Kang's light tempura batter will give you savory crunchiness without the impending guilt. Due to covid, we ordered a feast that feeds 5 to feed 2..ehem to test how well the food travels to South City. After rigorous experimentation (a mix of SF traffic, maybe a little road rage, and Daly City fog), my fish and chips arrived safe and sound with the same lasting crunch. What I love about Piccadilly is that the food is always prepared, and cooked to order , so i get to see the cook dredge each onion, and piece of fish , Yea I got an order of Fish with Onion Rings ,For me its Onion Rings over Fries every time. It was cool to just watch how careful , and meticulous the cook was at each stage of the preparation to prevent against cross contamination, and how he went back to the refrigerator for each order that needed to be prepared. This was a To Go Order , so upon placing my freshly fried foods onto the paper he then neatly folded the paper into a convenient package , and yes I got the Tarter Sauce , because I am not going to blink an eye at .25 , this is the same cost for a handful of minutes via a parking meter , or a public dryer , so for me it would be silly to skip on this finishing touch to the meal ! After a short drive back to the office cafe, and grabbing a Sweet Ice Tea , I unwrapped my bounty and dove into Decadent Batter Dipped Onion Rings , and then my 3 pieces of Perfectly Cooked Batter Dipped Fish making sure to add a touch of the Sauce with each bite ,, It was so so good , and an easy recommend for a lunch that cost less then $10- read more
