    Erdinger time!

Shockingly my first ever visit as I normally don't venture too far from Oddest and Dulcimer. Fantastic local place with an interior layout of a grocery store. Was extremely busy for a Thursday night. Frequented mostly by locals the bar has a cosy, homely, dinner party vibe. Not a massive choice on the drinks front from first impressions but the cider on tap certainly had an earthy kick in the teeth kinda taste. Perfect meeting place before heading out, or a midweek catch up if conversation is your chosen form of entertainment.

Exactly what we needed on a rainy Sunday. In fact, it's exactly what I need on any day of the week, any weather and at any stage of hunger. Let's get this straight; it's nothing fancy. You go in, find a seat (it's really small so I imagine this can sometimes be difficult), choose a pie/beer, go to the bar and order. They serve Pieminister pies and usually have 4 to choose from (£4.95), then you choose one ...or a combination... of the sides (minted mushy peas +£1, mash +£1, gravy +£1). I had the Shamrock; a pie packed with tender beef and vegetables in a Guinness gravy cased in tasty pastry, and minted peas. It was perfect. The pie was piping hot, the peas were a great accompaniment to the rich beefy gravy inside, and I topped it off with my own finishing touch - a guilt-ridden squirt of ketchup. To wash it down I chose Cascadian Black by Saltaire Brewery; very dark, smooth and tasty. When ordering a pint you're asked if you want a handled glass - who doesn't?! I really enjoyed the approach in this place. You know what you're getting and you know it's going to be good. There's minimal decisions, no fuss, good beers and great pies. Top marks!

Nothing to do with headache inducing mathematics equations and everything to do with the best pies in the local vicinity. Serves 12 draught beers and has over 60 bottled variations!! So there you have it- pies and beer. Why are you still here?!

Great array of continental draft beer on tap and they specialize in pies made in Bristol at Pieminister. Here you will find that a pie and mash with peas will come in at under £5! Downside is that the seating are outside is on a very busy road (Manchester Road) which can be rather irritating when trying to hold a conversation. I will conclude this place has a great atmosphere inside, great food and the staff were more than helpful :) hooray for Pi.

3.14159265 Thankfully for me this bar has absolutely nothing to do with maths. Although some of my maths geek friends would probably be attracted to it for its intellectual sounding name. Admittedly, it is a more concise and appealing than calling the bar 'who ate all the pies?', although the latter is probably more accurate. You guessed it. Pi sells lots of pies. And lots of beer. What better place to spend an evening? Sadly, that seems to be the opinion of many others, and the last couple of times I've tried to go to this little bar it has been so full that there was no chance of finding a seat. I'd recommend the wildshroom and asparagus pie with veggie gravy. Yum. This is the first bar of its kind that I've ever come across, but I reckon this pie bar trend will spread to the Northern Quarter and beyond (but maybe not as far as 'the south' - I don't think they're ready yet). I was going to give Pi 3.14159265 stars, but I'll round it up to 4.

The simplest ideas are always the best as far as I'm concerned. Who can go wrong with great pies and even better ales? it's a win-win situation! They're super friendly in here, and quick to serve you. The interior is warm and welcoming. I highly recommend the Minty Lamb pie with a side of peas and gravy (which comes in at around £6). There's over 50 bottled beers to choose from, to go with said pie, and the draught choices change often and include local independents like Salford's Bazens.

Lovely little bar. Great pies and nice beer - not a lot of space so you've got to be eagled-eyed to graba table as and when people move on.

The menu was pretty standard, so I quickly have chosen what to have and went to take a seat. The breakfast was of the right temperature, no twists, does the job. The wait was a bit too long - but again, this is a pub, not a breakfast place, so not sure it's fair to expect fast service at this time of day.

Although it's traditional and there's nothing that makes you go wow like some nearby trendy bars, it's definitely this which appeals to me - in fact I found a lovely little table towards the back with a roaring fire which warmed me up on a day when the weather was starting to look rather autumnal. I was served by 3 different staff and all were friendly, polite and welcoming. For some bizarre reason I decided to go for their 2 for £12.95 lunch deal (why I needed 2 courses at lunch I'm not sure but it seemed good value - plus I'd been in meetings all day so needed a fair amount of comfort food) and I went for the ham hock terrine to start with (lovely piccalilli) followed by the steak and ale pie with chips and vege's (devine). The quality and taste was excellent and with a very full belly I felt my work here was done! Speaking of work, it was also a good little spot to work for an hour on my laptop afterwards - with free wifi. That's the right way to blend tradition and modern so as the customer has the best of both worlds :-)

Located in a part of the city that is clearly on the up (just off St Peters Square) it's a traditional boozer of the very old school variety - deceptively sized with a tiny front bar but loads of seating in the back! The drinks on offer are all a little bit stuck in the past for my beer tastes but this isn't a problem for most patrons - they just do lots of bitters, lagers and stouts. I have to say that their beer flights are great value at just over £3.00 where you can get a third of each beer of your choice up to a pint - really good idea and great to see it appearing in more and more pubs! City Arms is somewhere that's cool to pop into if you're after a quick pint or meeting with friends, I just can't see myself wanting to spend all night here - I think I'd get very bored, very quickly of the beers on offer - but this is my own overly pretentious beery opinion!
