    Steak Pie
    Matt F.

They do fantastic Pie's and beautiful Ales. I could stop there as it pretty tells you the story, they do exact what it says on the tin, and then some! I had the Steak Pie which was fantastic, although the Game Pie that my Grandpa had looked and smelt even better, so yes it's only fair I return to try that soon! All the pies looked brilliant and although I can only attest to the taste of mine, everyone seemed very happy with their meals! Started the meal with some bread and tasty pesto and oils and a wonderful American Pale Ale, my current favourite type, from a local brewery in Manchester (even better). Wasn't room for the desserts on this trip but it definitely won't be the last time I visit here! They have big TV's and show all kinds of sports and with the vast amount of Ale's and other alcohol options on offer, it would be rude of me to venture back to try some more!

Game Pie (venison, boar and pheasant)

It really is "all about the pie". Big effing pies. With a decent selection of fillings including meat, vegetarian, vegan and guest specials, there's something that'll tempt almost everyone. They're pretty sizeable portions (especially if they come with mash) and about 1lb in weight so be prepared for subsequent food comas. I opted for Game Pie (venison, boar and pheasant) and my friend Pastissada de Caval (horsemeat, smoked bacon and garlic). We were very happy with both. We found out that a record had been set (by some 'professional competitive eater') for THREE of these pies, plus servings of mash and peas, at less than four minutes - it might even have been three minutes - so we're talking over 3 and a half lb of pastry, hot fillings and potato. What a beast. For £20, if you eat all this in less than 10 minutes, you get your money back and a commemorative t-shirt (for you to wear on your way to gastric bypass surgery no doubt). Their choice of ales is also pretty good (I like places which display loads of empty beer bottles so you can see how many you can tick off having tried them). They have six rotating cask ales from micro-breweries and also serve their own Yippee Pie Ale.

    Boar pie Amazing!

Oh Pie and Ale you joyful little joy filled joy of joyness. I love Pie and I love Ale it's basically if I opened somewhere I want to go to lunch for, the only change I would make is that it would be next to my work. The Ales great, the Pies are great I had a Boar pie (Boar I expected to be like pork, I'd compare it closer to Beef) deeeeeeeeelicious Need to go more, need to be in NQ more so I can go more

OK so great looking place, staff very friendly at the bar and rather trendy. The framboise beer I ordered was so so tasty literally the best beer I have had in a while. However!! Me and James G ordered the steak and ale and the 3 cheese and leek pie and shared them. I have to agree with Stacey and Anthony on this and say the steak and ale pie was ok- nothing absolutely amazing though which was disappointing. I thought there was too much pastry and not enough meat. Also I would have liked a tad more mash and some veggies on the side. The veg they offer is mushy peas which I detest :( (naturally because I am not northern it would appear). The 3 cheese on the other hand- BEAUTIFUL! So tasty, creamy, cheesey and morish! Could of eaten 2 of these! So much more flavour than the meat for some reason and just all round brilliant! One more thing..... We all ordered separately but within about 1 minute of each other, 2 pies arrived.....then a 10 minute wait.....then another 1.......then another 1. I don't mean to go off on one BUT if there is a table of 4 you don't bring out food for 2 of the people and not the others! The waiter didn't seem to be bothered about the fact we had to wait whilst our friends had their food- I would have expected him to be profoundly sorry! So sorry, it went from such a friendly and funny barman at the start to being confused at the lack of service. The price is quite expensive if you compare it to pieminster which I believe from my friends is more tasty and for much less money.... I enjoyed the food though I thought £10 for a pie is a bit too expensive... Such a shame- I would come back for the cheese pie however and give them a second chance.....

    Ho Ho Ho Christmas specials!

Back for more : ) I love the beer selection in the place and so does everybody else because it's always at least half full. I like to sneak off to Pie and Ale for drinks and few nibbles as I think it has a great atmosphere is a wee bit off the beaten track so you can usually get a couple of seats, or a booth if ya lucky! The Food: Last time I went for the one of their Pies and wasn't too impressed (Maybe it was bad day). So we mixed it up a little this time and went for the Snacks Sharer option. Not really an option just what you get if you don't order a Pie. We got Bread for 4 with oil and balsamic, Loads potato skins, Marinated Olives, Hummus Dip and the ridiculously hot Buffalo wings. The food was really good and came in at around £6 each between three of us. I still like this place and I'll still recommend as a good spot for a quick bite to eat or a great place to try the beer selection!

pork bites, bacon & cheese potato skins, bbq chicken strips (2014)
    Jessica H.

After a number of visits to Pie and Ale, predominantly for either Friday night drinks or Sunday football viewing, Monday saw me return with food on the agenda. Rather than go for the pies - many of which have developed since my last peek at a menu, with plenty of exotic pies on offer for those with a more adventurous palette - we shared some of the bar snacks. After a small debate about whether having potato skins and cajun wedges was just slightly too much potato, we decided on the boneless chickens strips (cleaner than buffalo wings) with advice from the bartender to go for the bbq sauce as the hot sauce "is just too much"; pork, chorizo and bacon meatballs; crispy potato skins with bacon and cheese. The portion size was perfect between the two of us, especially after the breakfast we had enjoyed earlier in the day. The chicken strips were my personal favourite, the meat remaining soft and tender despite assuming that the flavour would be focused in the sauce, followed by the subtly spiced meatballs. The potato skins were tasty, though slightly overdone, which impacted the flavour slightly. We were very content, which led to two bottles of wine in the course of a couple of hours; the bartender obviously knew who he was dealing with as he made sure for us to pay during Happy Hour, making the wine £10 a bottle as opposed to around £15. Big love. Something worth note is that the Bakerie wine shop next door seems to be converting into an 'extension' of Pie and Ale, so hopefully these guys will continue to go from strength to strength.

This was an unexpected treat! Whilst unsuccessfully attempting to find Dusk 'til Pawn, we saw some lights down a side street and decided to investigate. At first I thought it was just some office building foyer, since the exterior of the building was mostly glass but no, it's a bar! We went in and were surprised by how big it was - the downstairs is quite spacious, divided into an open space at the front and a smaller, cosier space at the back. There's also a mezzanine level where you can do some good people watching and they have a couple of cool tables made out of old arcade cabinets. To drink we had the "Yippee Pie Ale", chosen mostly for the comedy value of saying it out loud but it was a really great drink and I'd readily have it again. Definitely worth a visit for it's great combination of good beer, great atmosphere and off-the-beaten-track-ness.

Don't let the 4* fool you, the ace is excellent and capitalises o. City centre quirky niche dining like the best of them. First up is the food, the pie was filled to burst with quality ingredients and the gravy and mash that accompanied it was beautiful. The animal shape of puff pastry on the top of the pie to denote the meat was very fun... The selection of food is broad and deep with some very different dishes than other places in the city (zebra balls... Not the parts of the animal It sounds like, promise!) The 4* is simple, the pie and mash is no better or worst than Pieminister when all is said and done and I could get exactly whet I got here at PM for a third of the price so I can't give it the same star rating. Though points are given for the choice of ale, this is a 4.5 easy :)

I don't know exactly where to start to give an idea of how much I love Pie and Ale. I have been here quite a few times, for a Yelp event, for dinner with friends and here I took visiting friends to let them try some good British cuisine. I've never been disappointed by their pies: classic, with game, vegetarians, all of them are delicious, served with gravy and mash, and with mushy peas on requests. Prices are around £10 per pie, I would say they're definitely worth it. The place is very big, not extremely easy to find since it's hidden in one of the tiny side streets of Lever Street. Also their beers deserve a try, I would especially advice the dark ones. A good reason for sporty people to go there over the past few weeks was that they showed all the matches of the Euros 2016! :)

Game pie and chicken and chorizo pie bring it on :)

I like pie and i like ale so bring them together in one place and whoop there it is!! Another venture by the guys from Bakerie set just behind in a building called the hive. Changing range of pies and guest ales so plenty to tickle your taste buds. Each pie is lovingly identified as to its contents by a either a chicken or a cow crafted out of pastry - beats those little flags any day as at least you can eat this! All come with plenty of gravy but i would recommend getting a side of peas to add to your pie eating experience. Saturday nights do get busy so your better off booking ahead or going early for your pie indulgence. They do veggie pies as well but i do feel that nothing beats a good meat pie but hey each to their own! Pie and ale goodness all round :) check out the pie eating contest on Mondays -extreme!! Hats off to anyone that achieves it! You defo deserve the T-Shirt.

Absolutely brilliant! I've visited Pie and Ale several times over the years, but not as often as I should have! The food is genuinely delicious and offers a good variety and not the usual options for pies. Another plus for Pie and Ale is, it has a great variety of quality drinks, such as Erdinger. The best part is that one gets change from a tenner when buying two pints. Always a bonus! My recent visit was during the Champions League Final 2016. This was for two reasons: I wanted quality food after a long day and a cool place to watch the final. Pie and Ale is divided into two sides, separated by the kitchen and bar in the middle, but this helps the place separate the types of evenings: For an evening for beer, food and good conversation, enter through the door on the right; and to watch sport (cricket, football, etc!) enter on the left. This section has one large projector screen and long bench and tables, which is great for groups, and it even has a VIP-type section on a mezzanine with a smaller TV Screen. The evening was a great atmosphere, full but not overly busy. I think it is a good spot to watch some sport ;) As for the food; DELICIOUS !! On this occasion I ordered the Hunters Pheasant pie: Wild pheasant breast and cooked with onion, celery, sherry vinegar, carrots, parsnip and thyme with red wine gravy. A dollop of mash potato accompanies the pie on top and it sits in a bed of gravy. Initially, I though the gravy was too much, but the mash and pie soaks it all up and it was actually the perfect amount. The pie was so tasty combining the pheasant and red wine and full of flavour from all the veg. My friend ordered the Sticky Boar Balls: wild Boar meatballs with cous cous. It looked great, and I believe it tasted just as good!

Vegan jackfruit pies - so delicious!
    Mari M.

I really liked how this restaurant has taken traditional British pies and customized them with vegan and vegetarian options. The jackfruit pie is exceptional - especially the pastry. I could have done with a few more greens/veggies but perhaps that was my fault and I should have ordered a side dish. The gravy is also excellent. Definitely recommend!

This bar was a nice surprise in northern quarter. It was trendy, having 2 big screen TVs showing football during the Euro 2016 & suitable for a friends group of 6-8 ppl to share a table. The beer was quite cheap compared to other bars in northern quarter. I had a half pint of larger & only costed me 1.90.

An absolute must for real ale lovers, there is no brewery attached. Instead, they have up to eight pumps (a minimum of four) of both real ales and more mainstream beers like Fosters. Both these and drinks that I myself actually drink are very reasonably priced for a pub just on the outskirts of the Northern Quarter. If you're not familiar with the area just walk all the way down Oldham Street then cross over the main road- its right in front of you. It is very quiet during the day but that is what some people want after all. No, where the Crown and Kettle really could do with improvement is the food. I think it really lets itself down as it just isn't good pub food- maybe if they perked up the menu more people would straggle in during the day. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they don't want trade to be roaring at all hours - just a thought.

If you can hold a convo with people from all walks of life, you will enjoy the vibe in here. There are people who have been drinking in here for thirty years! Yeah you probably won't meet the man/woman of your dreams in here but there are no chavs either. I'm also currently on a mission to find other places outside of the main NQ drag, far from the maddening crowd. I can't imagine the NQ hipsters and trendies wouldn't be seen dead in a place like this (good). A hidden drinking den two minutes from Piccadilly Gardens, with cheap Jagerbombs (I dragged a large group of us here and we drank them dry of Jager) and more interestingly - quite a chilling history. Not sure if anyone wants the gory details but I'll tell you anyway. The pub had a dumb waiter for moving food from one floor to the next. When the dumb waiter was inspected by the fire brigade (1976 this was) the cut up bodies of the landlord's wife and children, plus the cleaner were found inside. Grisly eh? Of course such meetings had to be conducted in suitably independent artsy places. The second such was scheduled to take place at the Castle Hotel on Oldham Street. The Castle does not need a surly bouncer or a velvet rope. This is all implied by the ways heads swivel as you walk in. God, I wished I'd been with someone else. Specifically an old man, or failing that a friend of mine who used to live round here and looks like so much of an outcast that she pretty much fits right into any environment. But trust me, there are pubs with just as interesting interiors (mosaics and tiled bar) and history (licensed since 1776) that actually want you to be there. This one probably does not. They have nine real ales, being attached to a Robinsons brewery but again why not try The Crown and Kettle or The Marble Arch instead for something similar? A large more than generous portion battered and fried perfectly. Imma steak fry cut girl and their chips were delicious ! - thick cut, the way I like them and fried with a delicate crispy outside. We did have to ask for some ketchup. I thoroughly enjoyed the side of mushy peas- seasoned lightly, partially mush with partial full size peas. The steak and ale pie was delicious. Drizzled the yummy gravy all over. Order food at bar, they'll bring food to your table when ready. Great food, reasonable pricing for generous portions! Cool vibes

It was conveniently located within walking distance of central Manchester with a variety of shops and pubs. Our room was very clean, and it seemed as though everything was fairly new and well kept. I liked the unique touches the hotel had as well, such as a vinyl record player, records, and a few books placed here and there to enjoy. It was also very quiet in our room, which, at the time of booking, I was skeptical of considering it was above the pub. The breakfast that I had at the pub was also very good and the service was very hospitable, both from the pub and hotel hosts. The only criticism I have is that the water in the shower kept going from warm to cold, which during the winter is unpleasant. Also, the internet was fairly slow, more so during the evening hours, which I attribute to the higher volume of people possibly using the WiFi. However, overall, the Abel Heywood is a place I would definitely recommend to others as well as visit again.

Most people would see this pub when heading into town from Rochdale Road direction, as the side of the pub is often rented out to make advertising morals for various companies, which are pretty cool. It isn't the trendiest of pubs in town, with the client base seeming to be much older than other bars nearby in the Northern Quarter, and it did seem to be a little dead/quiet compared to others nearby, but there still seems to be a charm about this place. Competitive pricing, decent/average service and selection of beers. A good amount of seating too, some of it is reasonably comfortable. 3*

In fact there's been a real Hare and Hounds here in Shudehill all this time and I'd never realised it. Probably because I didn't have much reason to go to Shudehill back then, but there we have it. Well shame on me, because this is one of the oldest pubs in Manchester. It's in the Northern Quarter, but think of it as something of an alternative to it, because while the majority of the NQ is dedicated to quirks and boho vibes and artsiness with just the right amount of scruff and a few airs and graces, pretension ends here. This is about as down to earth as you can get. You'll find old men by the door (the front door of which is adjacent to both pawn and porn shops and apparently what is one of Manchester's most famous and discreet brothels... mmm, local culture) smoking pipes and cigarettes, and if you can muster up the bravery to walk past them, it's worth it. This place is soaked in character in the same way the likes of the King's Arms in Salford is, with a legendary Karaoke night full of geriatrics crooning along to Frank Sinatra and cheap drinks aplenty. The food is as down to earth as the place - decent, honest and simple. With friendly staff and live music upstairs sometimes, this pub is about as central as you can get and definitely worthy of a few visits. Practise your gruff voice and start whinging about 'the youth of today' and you'll fit right in, squire.
