In the past month I submitted a question twice through the "contact us" section of their website. I have not gotten a response back in almost 3 weeks. I checked my spam folder and nothing was there either and nothing indicated they were closed or on vacation. It was a simple question regarding cleaning a camera I've had for 7 years that had never been cleaned (I've never had any issues). Photo Tech is THE resource for optical excellence. My Sony Alpha 1 took a hard fall while traveling. This is my "Go To" heavy-lifting camera. I absolutely love it! I'm also somewhat neurotic about my camera gear. After some deep research, several references and plethora of reviews, I opted to allow this team to handle my baby. I was so nervous. Repairs like this are never cheap but they did a good job, kept me up to date on the process, and did the work quickly. Unfortunately I did not choose this place by choice. This repair service center was chosen by my Allstate protection plan as this was the service center of choice. Awful service to be honest and will never send my gear back into there. My cinema camera suffered some water damage and sent it in through my insurance claim to be prepared. I made sure to list all problems I experienced and noted what had happened so it was very clear up front. I received the camera back the first time, and they sent back claiming the camera works with both battery and AC. So I tested when I got it back and sure enough the AC works but the battery didn't. So I sent it back in, and same thing again, they sent back, said they checked everything I said and it all worked. I tried to go through all the tests I could figure out, buy different parts that were related to the battery because I couldn't figure out why their battery worked but 3 of mine didn't and 2 of my buddies didnt. I found out that Photo Tech Repair Service was the service center on the job, called and came to find out that they lied about testing the battery. They had no clue what I was even talking about when it came to v-mount batteries when I called their office. Very disappointing and not somewhere I would at all trust at this point to send any of my gear to. read more

After sending my Canon 17mm Tilt/Shift lens to a repair place in Los Angeles, which took 2 months to "repair", I discovered that the lens was still not focusing properly. I reached out to Photo Tech. Paul was amazing!!! After getting back to almost immediately he asked for details and photos of the lens before confirming they could repair it properly. I sent the lens up for a Tuesday delivery by Wednesday morning they sent me photos of test charts showing what was wrong with the lens and what it would cost to repair. By Friday they were shipping the lens back to me. And they even gave me a break on the cost since I had already spent money with the LA repair place. I've been meaning to post this one but forgot. Sorry about that, I will be brief and to the point. Last year after about three years of use, I found my Canon DSLR EOS not responding when I pressed the button to shoot. At first I believed that something might be up with the lens but since neither of my two worked, I decided to bring it in to the Photo Tech shop down near Union Square. The staff were friendly and gave it a quick look to determine that there was an issue and not some kind of accidental setting from me. They returned my battery and memory card but kept my lens to do diagnostic and said it would be about 7-10 days before I would get it back. When the time arrived, I went in and found the device to be not only working but cleaned to the level of looking like it had just come out of the box. It actually seemed even cleaner. Overall my bill was about $90 based on the part that this repair required and the service fee. Some might view it as pricey, but it was actually very reasonable when one considers that replacement of the camera body would have cost me several hundred dollars. I'll be using these folks again should the need arise and I have recommended them to others who follow this visual passion. read more

I stopped in after work at about 6:00 to drop off my camera for cleaning. The lady told me it might even be ready before they closed at 7, but I opted to pick it up the next day. She offered me an additional deep cleaning of my lens for $5 which I was happy to take her up on. When i returned the next day it was ready to go nicely wrapped in plastic to keep it clean on the journey home. Will most definitely return for my future camera needs. read more

This is a photographic equipment repair company of great effectiveness and honesty. The Sony organization referred me recently to Photo Tech as their authorized repair company. The technician repaired my camera in a few minutes, then charged me much less than would seem to cover their overhead. I've been here a couple of times for both warranty and non-warranty service, and the level of service depends heavily on the person. First time I accidentally dropped by new Nikon lens, causing a small crack in the back glass which resulted in a slight reduction in sharpness. It was still within the credit card protection period, so I sent it for a quote. They waited patiently while I sent the paperwork to my credit card company for reimbursement, and I got the camera back 2 days after I authorized and paid for the repair. Unfortunately the technician had misaligned the lens elements, resulting in it becoming even less sharp than before. I sent it back with example shots, and they nailed it the second time around. The second time I was having problems getting the aperture to open all the way with an AF (screw-drive) lens when mounted on my DSLR. When I took the combination to them, the person behind the counter took in only the lens for repair. It did indeed have sticky aperture blades which they cleaned, but after this combination still didn't completely work, I took it back a second time. This time a very experienced guy was there and with one look he noticed that the aperture lever inside my DSLR was bent. They sent it to Nikon for warranty repair (Nikon doesn't allow third-party repair services such as them to do warranty service) and I got it back two weeks later, all fixed. I give them props for being able to resolve all my issues in the end, but both times it took two tries to get there. 3.5 stars read more

I was reccomended by a friend. I have never been happier with the service I have received on a first time basis. I had purchased a used Nikon D750 which I was told at sale would occasionally stop Auto focusing. But would work after removing and re installing the lens. Within 40 shots it quit completely. Worked out a partial refund and sent to Photo Tech. Upon arrival they discovered water damage. They replaced shutter,numerous pcb boards mirror box ,and body cap and fixed flash that wouldn't open. All this at original qoute. They recieved it on 7/1 and finished it on 7/11 and FedEx'd to me on 7/12. What more could you ever get or want from a service company. I recently bought a used Nikon D810 and it worked great, but there was a lot of dust on the sensor. I brought it in to another shop closer to my neighborhood and they told me it would be ready in 3 days, when I got it back it still had spots showing up on the sensor! So I took the trip to the west-side to Photo Tech. Dropped it off around noon they told me it would be ready the same day at 3pm! I went shopping, came back a couple of hours later and picked it up. I got home, took some test shots and they were literally perfect! Not a single spot of dust on the sensor. I'm really impressed with the turn-around time and the quality. In comparison, the first place I went to took 3 days and the sensor still wasn't clean. Photo Tech took 3 hours and sensor was perfect. No competition here, Photo Tech wins! read more

I've had a lot of interaction with PhotoTech from their days located across from B&H Photo on W 34th street to their new current location on W 36th Street. They have a great sensor cleaning service that can't be beat and it's done in decent time at a great price. I've also used them for a handful of lens and camera repairs that were well done and I have sent plenty of friends and family to this store over the years for their own sensor cleanings and repairs (all of which had positive reports). However, this year I had an issue with my Sony A99mII after I had somehow bent the lens mount. My lenses would consistently loose communication with the camera and default the focus to infinity. They would not sit flush against the mount and would pull down away from the communication contacts. Unfortunately the manufacturer warranty had just expired a month or so before but PhotoTech is a Sony Authorized shop and I was confident this could be fixed. I took it in for an evaluation and explained the issue. A day or two later I was assured over the phone that the lens mount was not bent but the cameras main board was water damaged and needed replacement. They were dead sure of their findings and I authorized the repair for $718.58. About a week or so went by and the repair was completed. I had the camera picked up and upon receiving it I started having the exact same issue again with the lenses loosing communication with the camera. I have other Minolta and Sony DSLR bodies and could not reproduce this issue on any of those cameras with any of my lenses. I brought the camera back to PhotoTech and explained to them that the main board they replaced was not the problem and that the bent lens mount that I had originally mentioned was the problem and was able to produce the issue in front of the employee working the front desk with pretty much every lens in my bag (especially heavier lenses). PhotoTech took the device back and refunded the cost of the main board they had replaced at $97.99. A few days later it was determined that the lens mount was in fact bent and the light box was damaged and needed replacement. The repair was done at no charge but took a considerable amount of time to complete claiming a delay from Sony to produce parts. Once the repair was complete I took the camera home and shot with it next very next day. Almost every photo I took was out of focus. The camera would report a focus lock but the images told another story. Even after making micro AF adjustments. What was originally one of the sharpest cameras I've ever used was not unable to produce a sharp image. Especially if focus points other than the center point were used. The hybrid AF system of the camera was essentially useless. I notified the store and was told to bring it back for evaluation. The first visit back I was told to leave the camera behind and left my brand new 24-70 lens along with it. A day or so later I was told that the issue had been resolved and was ready for pickup. The focus issued remained. The second I was there for a few hours while firmware was re-flashed and troubleshooted. At first when it was brought back to me the Hybrid AF system was completely non-functional and I made sure not to leave the store until it was back. Once that was made active again I tested my lenses in the store and all seemed well. That night I stopped for a few photos on the way home and was unable to produce sharp photos of wide scenery. I called the store back and was fairly upset about how many issues I was having with this camera and it wasn't even 18 months old. I was told to come back in but I was insistent that they had ruined my camera and that the only acceptable fix at this point was a complete replacement. I had already been lead around in circles over this repair and was tired of being led on. I ended up replacing the camera with a new A99mII and the new camera functions EXACTLY the way my previous one did before the repairs took place (minus the bent lens mount). Every lens is tack sharp. Even by the edges and one wide shots. The hybrid AF system works great. Everything is as it should be. Unfortunately my previous camera could not be repaired and after so many visits to and from the shop and nearly 2 months of time without my camera I gave up. I do have some repair work I would like to get done and I've had way more good experiences with PhotoTech over the years than bad but this whole situation that surrounded my A99mII was a disaster. In the end I had to put out nearly $3200 to replace a camera that never worked properly again after a $700 repair. read more

I contacted the store regards to my boken camera lenses. On the phone I was given around $54 quote. Then once Im at the store they told me its gonna cost around $120. And last but not least after paying $15 for "estimates" I was given almost $170 price. Oh, and I found out it would possibly be ready or not by the time I leave the country. My world shattered in the summer of 2010 when my digital camera caught some sand in the lenses and became a vegetable. That's what happens when you go to Rockaway Beach--all sorts of drama happens there. I thought those 4 years of precious memories had really come to an end--I mean, yeah, my camera has seen brighter days and worse sometimes, some magic moments and some unpleasant--probably found the easiest way to break. I sure as hell wasn't going to let that be the end. So my mother recommended me her photo "life saver" from the 90's and so I immediately hopped on the next train to Union Square... The guy took one look at my camera and said he could fix it. Fast-forward days later, I came back to get my camera but it cost me a hefty $100-something. I bit my lip and gave in. Granted, it doesn't function as smoothly as it did before but they got most of the sand out, even though the lens point out and struggle like a wrecked car, still functions well. read more

They examined it, gave me an estimate accounting for parts and labor, and had it ready when they said they would. They also guarantee their work for six months from the date it's completed. They have over 50 years experience, which tells me they're not just a fly-by-night. I have a few other cameras I have to take to them, because I know I can count on them to do an excellent job. I amazing raced my butt over here on a Friday before store closed for the day and handed over (reluctantly) my DSLR over to them. A short guy with glasses told me they would do a diagnostic and to call back in a few days for a status. So I called back per instructions and the guy over the phone told me I'd be charged twenty one fifty-five. So what do you think when you hear that? $21.55 is what most people would think so I said twenty one dollars and fifty-five cents? The guy says yes, 2155. So with this, a happy me says yes. Couple hours later, I check my credit card online and I see "PHOTO TECH $221.02" I flipped my lid when I saw this. So I called the next morning and luckily I was told by this (rude) lady that I'd get my refund and that I will get a call regarding when to pick it up (it was couriered to their other store to get it fixed).
