Stopped in with a co-worker after the lunch rush and we each had breakfast. We were greeted very warmly by the hostess. I had the French Toast with Italian Sausage and my co-worker had the ham and cheese omelette with the home fries. I was very pleased with my French Toast. It was 6 thick slices powdered and not only did they taste really good but they smelled good when they put them down. The Italian Sausage was one huge link that was split down middle. Nice presentation. It also was very tasty. My co-worker loved her omelette and was almost dancing while she was eating it. The coffee was good. The prices were very reasonable for the portions they served. The service was very good and friendly. I've been to many diners over the past several months and this one was a notch or two above the others. Is it the best diner in NJ? No. But I can't complain if the food, service, and prices were excellent. read more

Stopped in at dinner time; 5-5:15pm. Not busy at all, maybe a handful of customers. Took a few minutes to be seated. Once seated my experience was pleasant. Waitress immediately took the drink order & the food came out quickly. I ordered the stuffed cabbage which was phenomal & was two large cabbages which was a surprise. Nothing special but decent diner food. Had the broiled seafood platter with stuffed shrimp, clam, flounder and mushroom. The stuffing was the same through the whole dish and was made with imitation crab (which I expect for a diner no issues there), it was just that there was so much stuffing on the platter it was about another meal when I took it off the top. Phoenix Diner is everything a Jersey diner should be: cheap, cheesey, and open 24 hours. The location is perfect for those of us needing a pick-me-up after a night in the city, which I have frequently done. It's also very close to boyfriend's house so this is the diner we end up at for all of our breakfast and 2am coffee needs...so much better than Galloway. The food is your typical diner food. The menu is literally the same menu that's presented in every other diner around here. What impresses me about Phoenix is their breakfasts. Typically, I've found diner breakfasts to be very bland at best, and tasteless at worst. Not so with Phoenix. I had a huge Golfers Omlette yesterday (turkey, bacon, tomatoes, mozzarella cheese), and I could taste every single ingredient. They used an ample amount of bacon and cheese, which I was honestly suprised to see. Boyfriend had some kind of omlette with bacon and sausage...I don't care for sausage, but he literally ate EVERYTHING, home fries and toast included. He also ate my leftovers for lunch. I appreciate that they actually put onions in their home fries, it's not just a slab of potatoes on your plate. Their coffee is also very good for being diner coffee. The decor is what you see at every other diner. Obviously not the place for fine dining but it certainly serves its purpose. I've had some slammin' grilled cheeses here. The one complaint I have about Phoenix is the service can be super spotty. I've come here and had a great server who was friendly, prompt, and knowledgable...and then I"ve come here and had rude servers who act like they can't be bothered. The first time boyfriend and I came here together, it was around 1am and we just wanted to sit and have some coffee. This is a COMMON practice in a NJ diner, however the waitress acted like we were doing her some kind of disservice by lingering. She actually brought the check after our second cups of coffee, despite the fact that we had not asked for it, nor did we WANT it just yet. Boyfriend had actually planned on ordering some food, but she had pretty much infuriated him with that thoughtless gesture. It's not like we weren't paying for our coffee refills, and it certainly wasn't like the place was mobbed and she was busy with other tables. Just rude. She could've made a decent amount of money off of us had she done her job correctly, but instead she got a $1 on a $4 bill. Her problem! Look, if you're going to a diner, you need to be conscious of the fact that you don't order off of the "Dinners" section of the menu. Generally you want to stick to something that is either breakfast or comes between two pieces of bread. Diner conniseurs know this, and we happily abide by the laws of diner...dining. We were a party of 11 and the hostess seated us a 2 different tables. We have eaten here several times before (only because the location is convenient for us all to meet) and have always sat together with tables pushed together. I asked the hostess twice if we could sit together and she said no they could not do that. I was polite the first 2 times I asked but then on the third time when the room was still empty and could accommodate us I asked for a manager. I believe her name was Roe and she said she was the manager. She refused to allow us to sit together. I would have walked out right then but it was my moms birthday and didn't want to make her more upset. We will NEVER go back. Besides the awful customer service from the hostess the food is mediocre at best. Our waitress was very nice but apparently afraid of the mean hostess. I understand it is more difficult to accommodate large parties- we worked in a restaurant at the beach for 15 years and had the rush after Mass to deal with too. -Good food -Spotty service After our Phish Halloween extravaganza we headed home and decided to take route 30 instead of the AC expressway. All being cranky and tired this diner was the first to appear and we jumped at the chance. It seemed so promising as we walked in, the hostess was on her shit and seated us right away. The place looked hoppin, all tables pretty well filled and waitresses scurrying about. We sat down and placed our drink orders, from this point on it pretty much all went downhill. Our waitress filled our coffee order and then disappeared for awhile. Came back about 10 minutes later to take food orders...various omelettes and other breakfast items were ordered. About 15 minutes went by and no food, no coffee refills...but another table seated after us got their food and with that our waitress said ours was coming. So we continued to sit and I decided to serve us some coffee. No one even noticed what I was doing until I had the pot and poured 2 cups, then I had 3 waitresses hovering trying to take the pot away. I get it, probably a liability but if anyone was around to serve it to us I wouldn't have had to do that. There were tons of busboys around, have them serve coffee if you guys can't keep up. Food finally comes. my omelette was great, it was a cheesesteak omelette and it pretty much consisted of all the items of a cheesesteak, thinly sliced beef, weird white cheese, and onions. It was deeelish. Husband got the chili omelette which they left the chili out of womp womp, a friend got corned beef has which looked canned, other friend got eggs and an order of fried mushrooms (which I've never seen before random but were perfectly fried and delicious). Check came, $42 and change, we tipped and left. The food was on point for the most part, our waitress was very sweet but overwhelmed--we're not sure if it was the time change or what but service was def lacking. Terrible service. Me and a group of 4 decided to stop here in the afternoon for a bite on our way out of AC. The food took a long time to come out and was barely warm for many of us. Not once did our waitress come around to ask us how our food was or offer refills. It began getting comical when I noticed NONE of the food brought out to the tables around us was steaming or appeared warm. Finalizing our visit, the waitress never offered us the check and didn't even bother to print it out after walking up to her and asking for the second time. I'm never coming back. Perfect after a late night of dancing and gambling. Huge menu with plenty of options and it was very affordable. The staff was really accommodating and we were able to get in our party of ten within 15 minutes. My only recommendation would be to add a chicken and waffle meal in the breakfast section. read more

Very good diner! I get a Farmer's Omelette every time I came here and it's been delicious. Prices are good and quantities are huge. If you've had a rough night in AC, don't go to Dunkin or any other breakfast place down there to get ripped off.. Just stop here off of the expressway and enjoy a great meal to ease the hangover. Whenever I need to eat quick, this is the place I go! The food comes out so fast, which is amazing if you're starving. I've never had a disappointing meal here. I also ordered the fruit salad, which came out on a very impressive plate, but half of it was under ripe and half was over ripe. Mushy strawberries and an over priced undercooked egg... This was our second visit, to the Phoenix Diner, this time at lunchtime. Lunchtime wasn't as fun as our first visit which was late at night. The hostess and waitress were lively and eager to please, late at night. The lunchtime waiter was efficient and got our order right. But the lunchtime hostess was a bit aloof and not too warm. She made me feel sorry that I asked her a question, about a menu item, on my way out. Late at night, they gave us rolls and butter, while we waited for our order. Not so, at lunchtime. I will not go back to the Phoenix Diner very soon, especially at lunchtime. read more
