The food tastes like it comes from a bar with inexpensive drinks. Some of the poor reviews are absurd, given that Black Cat doesn't brand itself a foodie's paradise. The food is exactly what one should expect from a spot that's a bar first, a restaurant second. That said, their pizza is elite and required dining for any serious pizza snobs in the area, and it shouldn't be looked over. We've been spending a lot of time in the Absecon area so far this year and have been trying some local hangouts. So far, this is the most interesting one. Let me start by saying that the Black Cat definitely has what you could call..."character". As soon as you walk in, you're immediately "Hun", "Babe" or "Dear" by the staff. I mean what the hell, it's 1145am on a weekday and the large bar area is 2/3 full of people on their 2nd round and you've got some modern country blaring on the juke box. It's an F-ing trip. The menu here is basic but it's large. Everything from some all-day breakfast favorites, Italian, pizza, fried seafood, sandwiches, salad, soups, wings, etc. Lack of choices is not a problem. Cheesesteak and Hot Open-Faced Turkey The food is the food. It's not going to wow you with Michelin star prowess but if you're coming here, you shouldn't be expecting that either. It's simple salt of the earth favorites served up quick and easy. Everything we ordered hit the table in about ten minutes and it was as expected, good. Apparently, they also regularly do special events here like Car Cruises, Bingo, Trivia & Live Music. Nice. Overall places like this are a throwback to another era. This is where your parents and grandparents went for a Saturday night highball or to get tanked after a good night at the tables or maybe a tough shift working the tables. Wow, can't believe my last review was in 2020 at the height of the pandemic when their was a tent outside. Seems like yesterday. The Cat continues to evolve. Jim, the owner took advantage of the time they were closed to replace the flooring and install a marble bar top along with refinishing all of the booth benches. Really a nice job and upgrade. Becoming less of a bar and more of a family bar/restaurant with a great menu. Menu keeps expanding and there is something for everyone. Wings and appetizers are fantastic cause I'm a munchie eater, but plenty of families and couples come in for the diners. One of the local favorites is his Chicken Franchise with angle hair pasta. Still a relaxing place to watch a ball game or just hang out with friends. Have family that comes in from DC and SC and they keep saying, "We don't have any local places like this." read more

The best pizza around! No one seems to think of black cat when it comes to pizza but trust me.. try it!! The perfect south Jersey pizza pie. The tomato sauce is like your mom made it and it is the perfect amount of cheese versus sauce. Dough is delicious! Highly recommend. The pizza is a bit oily but dap it with a paper towel and it's perfect. They were out of wings so we got the chicken tenders for the first time and they were great. White meat and lightly breaded. They were served with carrots celery and blue cheese. Employees are so friendly and attentive. We always call ahead and order pick up. We'd driven by several times and commented we should stop and take a photo since we are cat lovers. There is a huge black cat sign on the roof. We finally decided to stop in and give it a try. Nice atmosphere, warm wood interior. Bar was not crowded at all, therefore not rowdy. Comfortable booth by window. Menu is not huge, no real fancy foods, but still a good menu, great for casual dining out. I ordered the Philly cheese steak wrap with fries and it was quite good. My friend ordered fish and chips and was very pleased. Prices are very reasonable. We'll definitely be stopping in again when we are in the area. read more

It was our first time dining at the Black Cat. I grew up on a specific pizza in the 70's, Pasqinni pizza. I heard they had the pizza recipe there, but you can only dine in when ordering it. So my wife and I had a great time, and throughly enjoyed the pizza. It brought back great memories of a time when I was young. Our waitress, Emily was super. Great attitude and great service! Good vibes here! Wide variety of food. I really wanted a burger but they only offer beef...no turkey or veggie. My friend ordered chicken tenders, which although the breading was perhaps the best I've tasted in a long time, was very under seasoned. Although I appreciate not too much salt, this desperately need a dash or two and pepper. Extremely bland! Ever... The parking? Definitely insufficient. If you want a space? Arrive early or try and figure out where to go where you won't have too far to walk. Being a single gal, that's significant and I might have just cancelled my attendance to the game as a result. Ambiance: Welcoming - people of all ages were there either taking up the stools around the centralized bar, or seated in various tables - well spaced in the time of COVID, or in a few off shoot rooms where you could be more isolated/cozy. Service: considering the number of people frequenting this establishment, it was good and timely between the three ladies - one being the bartender - dividing up the work. Food: my Quizzo teammates enjoyed the two for $20 cheese pizza special. If you like the old fashioned greasy cheese, thin crust, then you will be content enough. I can't really speak to the offerings because I just braces and it would not be fair. Beverage: Soft drinks - They are Pepsi. I will say no more. Got a hot Turkey for take out. Was going to have a wine while waiting, but thank god I asked the house wine first. After recognizing it at an $8, 1.5l bottle of stuff I wouldn't clean my car battery with, I declined and waiting for the hot Turkey sandwich I was craving. They were charging $8 for swill. Got home, opened it up, assessed and threw it out. Looked like the dark meat leftover pickings of a 3 week old turkey carcass covered in a salt based liquid of some sort. Every town (ok. almost every town) has a local joint with great food and a great staff. Might be a bit loud and a bit of a wait but worth it when it comes to getting what you want. Whether your local joint is in Elizabeth, or Somerset County, or Freehold or wherever in NJ you're going like the food here. Split a Chicken Parm with my wife and it was very good ... but the fries are the best we've had in a while. Short version - get just about anything with a side of fries. I hate to lower the overall rating and almost didn't write a review because I couldn't give one as excellent as the previous reviews. It might be because we aren't local, and maybe standards here are different than what we are used to. We ordered two pizzas, one with sausage and mushroom, and one with sausage, mushroom, pepperoni, onion and green pepper. The deal breaker for me is the fact that the mushrooms on the pizzas were canned. Yuck! The sauce and crust were good. The cut up pieces of sausage were different but okay. Black Cat Bar & Grill isn't fancy and it certainly isn't scenic. In fact, it's a little divey, watering hole. They have some A-Okay food for a very reasonable price. Probably a better spot for locals, I ended up at Black Cat with my family over the 4th of July weekend. I split a dinner deal with my dad. It included two entrees, a choice of soup or salad for each of us and a bottle of wine for $29.99. There were about 4 or 5 options for the entrees which included crab cakes and fried shrimp. The bottle of wine was limited to one of their house wines in a few basic varieties. It turns out the bottle of house wine is $10 anyways if you plan on having a few glasses or have someone to share it with. The salad was really basic and not too exciting. The crab cake was broiled, but only came as one. It didn't seem like a lot of filler and had a decent flavor. I opted for mashed potatoes, which were good, even though they came with gravy. My husband I shared the applesauce and broccoli. The applesauce was probably from a jar but the broccoli tasted fresh. It had a nice crisp, not overly seasoned taste. I wish I got our server's name, but she was really great: energetic, friendly and helpful. She was the one who pointed out the house wine bottles, where she could've just let the rest of the group order wine by the glass. Overall, not the most exciting of meals but it was reasonably priced and a fair option if you are close by. read more
