Been looking for a good Pho place near me ever since we moved to Rancho Peñasquitos. Been to the Tong Sake House and noticed this place next door. Ordered the signature Pho. The broth was very good. And there was a ton of beef in the soup. The noodles were done perfectly, I hate when the noodles are overcooked and they fall apart. They have both the standard siracha sauce and a house made chili sauce, that's always a plus in my book. Prices were decent for the amount of food that you received. The only weird thing is that you order from a tablet, but pay at the counter like normal Pho restaurants. All in all it was pretty good. Will definitely be back. read more

I thought the broth was a bit sweet and that's how my daughter likes it but my husband thought it was a bit salty. A few limes ‍ and sriracha fixed it for me. There was a lot of protein in our bowls which is a plus for me. Flew back to SD on Friday night at 8p and noticed Pho Tan opened until 10. Ordered four bowls of pho and we were happy campers! They stick to the basics here which I love. Pho broth with different meats you can choose from- rare steak, tendon, flank, brisket, meatball. They also have chicken pho and vegetarian options. Their egg rolls are also delicious and a favorite of mine.. a must when I order here. This is the best pho in the area! The crispy tofu is the actual best! They are mom and pop restaurant and the service is very good. I've eaten a lot of pho in the Poway, Mira Mesa and Rb areas and this one takes The cake. The shrimp pho with egg noodle is the best flavor of broth me and my lady have had! Pho Combo 2, choosing Rare Steak and Brisket (4/5) -- Very good amount of meat. Broth flavors were good but could be more assertive. ($17.50) Hue Spicy Beef Noodle (4/5) -- Bún Bò Huế is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes, and this version is very good: beef tendon, beef shank and pork hock with sausage, Vietnamese ham, and congealed pork blood. The broth was flavorful but not as spicy as I'd expect. ($20.00) Service was welcoming and good.. Being on a corner, the restaurant has great natural light. My favorite Vietnamese dish is Bún Bò Huế (BBH) and had a good feeling once I saw "Spicy Beef Noodle" under Pho Tan's 'Specials' section of their menu. Pho Tan's version of this dish is flavorful and fragrant! Lots of lemongrass, fresh veggies, and tender proteins; I thoroughly enjoyed every part of my meal. My soup arrived to my table well before my beverage did, but once it did my lemonade was bright and refreshing. While I currently live near Little Saigon, I was extremely impressed to discover this Vietnamese eatery in the Poway suburbs. I came here for the first time a few days ago after many years of not visiting. I think it is now under new ownership. Food I tried: Egg rolls: I was not impressed as there was hardly any filling inside the shell. I wouldn't mind paying more if I get to taste more of the filling. It would have been nice also if the rolls were made with rice paper. BBQ pork: Tasty albeit a little on the salty side. Pho: Salty, and beef flavor was a little too strong for me. Spicy Beef soup (Bun Bo Hue): There was potential here as I could taste the lemongrass flavor, but the broth was way too sweet for my taste. I had to pour a lot of the shrimp paste in to offset the sweetness. Fried Tofu appetizer: Crusty the way I liked it, but the size seemed smaller than what was shown in the menu photo. Steam broccoli as side order: No quality control here. The broccoli was not fresh. I threw most of it away. Customer service: The younger men there were more attentive or friendly. There was a middle age man there who normally hovered around the counter who didn't seem to have any idea about customer service. I came up and stood there for 10 seconds and he was busy with his phone device and didn't bother to look up at me. I asked for a specific takeout container. He didn't say a word, looked at my table to see what leftover food I had, and decided to give me a different container. No word exchange but a very cold and indifferent look. I've been here 4 times now and always get the rare steak + brisket pho, and it never disappoints. The portion is huge and I never have to worry about running out of meat before noodles. The staff are always very kind and the food comes out hot and quick. But if you get takeout instead, it's securely packaged and easy to assemble yourself (I didn't even have to reheat anything at home). I really can't recommend it enough! :) read more

Pho Tan: "B" or "3.8 stars" meaning "Good: a solid choice if in the area, but not a destination restaurant." Executive summary: If you live in Rancho Bernardo, Poway, or the east side of Scripps Ranch, I think Pho Tan may be your best bet for Vietnamese food without having to drive further. Bright, spacious, easy parking, friendly service and good food, definitely a happy discovery for me. Sunday night last week, we didn't feel like cooking and craved Vietnamese food. I noticed the new Vietnamese restaurant on Yelp a few days before, so this was a great opportunity to try them out. The decor is neighborhood Asian style - not fancy, but comfortable, and better than many. Lots of windows, spread out seating, and something I love about Vietnamese restaurants, all you can use cutlery, napkins and sauces. Pho Tan currently has a special - free coffee with $20+ order. The owner, Julie, served us, and she kindly substituted a lime-aid for me, since drinking a Vietnamese coffee at dinner time would have easily kept me awake until 4am. Pho Tai Chin (Rare beef & lean brisket) " B " : I ordered the rare beef to be on the side, but they forgot. Nonetheless, the broth had good beef flavor, a hint of sweetness balancing the savoriness. I could taste it wasn't just msg in boiling water, but broth that had been boiling and reduced for some time. The beef and bean sprouts tasted fresh, with a good portion of noodles and protein. Com Thit Nuong (Grilled pork with rice) " B " : One of my favorite dishes. The bad places, one bite of the pork and you can tell it's not fresh. Definitely not the case here. A very good blend of smoke, sweet, and savoriness. If the pork had a bit more char and was served hotter, it would easily get a "B+." Canh Go Sot Dac Biet (Fried chicken wings) " B- " : I expected the more traditional, non-breaded style of wings (like from Ngon Ngon To Go in Mira Mesa), but instead, the breading made the wings feel a little like from a pub with sweet & spicy sauce rather than from an authentic Vietnamese restaurant. They were still pretty good. Nicely marinated and fried, with the meat still tender and juicy. Soda Chanh (Lime-aid with club soda) " B " : I like my lime sodas really strong, with lots of lime juice and a good amount of sugar to balance it out. So this wasn't the best I've had, but it's still very good. The lime tasted fresh, and the club soda had good fizz. And, it was free (sorta)! Overall, Pho Tan easily makes it to my "revisit worthy" list. And if you're in North County, not wanting to deal with Mira Mesa or Convoy traffic, this place is it. Hands down, better than any of the Pho Ca Dao's in the area. ------------------------------------------- Food Grading Scale: A+: Life changing. You remember these bites for the rest of your life. Occurs very infrequently and when it does, you'll know it. You don't even know how to further improve it with a magic wand. A: Wow! Excellent. You felt happy biting into it. You're considering whether it's life changing, but know it misses the mark. A-: Very very good. Whatever it is, it's one of the best, but you can think of further improvements. B+: Very good. Very enjoyable, not to the point of "impressive," but worth revisiting. B: Good. A solid example of whatever it is, offering enjoyment, but not enough for making an effort to get. B-: Not bad. If in a pinch to eat something, this offers some enjoyment and is a reasonable option. C+: Mediocre plus. Pretty average, but with one or two positive characteristics you can identify. C: Mediocre. "Meh". Very average. Not bad enough to make you angry, but nothing good about it at all. C-: Bad. You recognize it for what it is, but a very bad rendition. Your foodie self is a little pissed, and feeling like a dummy you ordered it. D: Awful. Whoever cooked it should be ashamed of themself. Somehow, you still managed to swallow a bite. F: WTF is this? Located in Poway, we were curious to try this spot we found. Initially, the staff was welcoming and we were met immediately my the server and were provided with 2 waters and the iPad to order on. The restaurant was clean, organized and had a friendly vibe. The food came out relatively fast and we started sampling the tastes. The Pho was pretty tasty but did need just a little more flavor in the broth. I personally did not enjoy the BBH but my wife thought the beef was overall good but the broth needed more flavor as well. No complaints on the spring rolls except I could have used more peanut sauce. Overall the service once the food came out seemed to strain some. We had to ask for more water and we were not checked once we received the food. There was some distraction as it seemed to be that their family or friends came in and that took away from the rest of the restaurant. But overall I would recommend trying them out and give them a 3.5/5. read more

I was happy to see this location had great reviews and was nearby I ordered pick up and my food was ready in about 20-30 minutes which was nice It smelled delicious and looked pretty yummy I ordered the Shrimp w/ veggies & chicken broth Which was decent I didn't enjoy the Seafood fried rice as much as I hoped It lacked seasoning and the seafood didn't taste fresh but it was okay The soft noodles with seafood may have been my favorite I'm just not a huge fan of imitation krab or overcooked seafood It was very chewy For all 3 of these items I paid $45 The place was empty when I picked up my food Staff wasn't as friendly as I hoped either I told him I was picking up my order and he said "yes?" My second time back in a week. I order the Pho Combo 2 - Choice Of2: rare beef, and brisket and I added filet mignon The broth is sooo delicious. I always ask for extra cilantro and onion because I love it and the server Muoi remembered me and asked if I'd like that again before I could even ask. It's great customer service when the staff remember your order even though they must see tons of people every day. The staff here are all so friendly and accommodating. I don't live in this area and drive out of my way because in my opinion it's the best Pho in San Diego, well worth the drive! A wonderful addition to Poway! I'm Vietnamese and took my dad to try it out and learned that this place has only been open for a few months. It's clean and well lit, great for a casual meal out. You can order on the iPad or with a staff member, whichever is easiest for you. The staff were so kind and attentive, and took the time to explain the menu. We had the pho and the crunch noodles with beef. The beef on the crunchy noodles was incredibly flavorful, and the portion size was perfect. The pho was delicious! I also loved that the condiment station at every table was packed with things you typically don't see being set out - Shrimp paste (we tasted it and it's legit), fish sauce, satay, chili sauce and hoisin sauce. We're Vietnamese so we're pretty picky when it comes to Pho, but this place is probably the best pho we've had in San Diego. Clean broth, nice atmosphere and music. Friendly service. Being raised in the restaurant industry myself with my parents owning multiple Japanese Restaurants, I think it's important to be in tune with what the customers would like to watch on the TV. For a busy dad like myself, sometimes the only time we get to relax in front of a television is when we are out at a restaurant. I asked multiple times to watch March Madness college basketball and although you guys accommodated, both times the channel found its way back to a food channel where we were watching Vietnamese food being made. March Madness is a pretty big event in sports and I'd say a majority of your customers would prefer watching the games rather than watching Vietnamese street food being made. It would be one thing if you had a secondary tv showing the Vietnamese street food as ambiance but since you only have one TV, you should utilize it to entertain the customers. I may have stayed longer to have another drink or appetizer to enjoy the game but instead we ate and left. From a customers perspective, I'm not sure if I'd be interested in watching Vietnamese food being made on TV when you guys do not serve those dish being displayed. A little puzzling to me why the kitchen staff decided to change back to that channel twice. Anyway, I hope that the restaurant does well and I look forward to my next visit when we are craving pho. Lastly, no cafe phin? That a huge miss in my opinion. People go for pho partly to see their coffee dripping in the glass in front of them and being able to control how much or how little milk that is in my coffee is important. I tried their signature pho with the bun bo hue broth and it was really good.. the flavors--the freshness of the lemon grass with the right balance of richness, salt, sweet, and spice--really comes through. Nothing special with summer rolls. The pho broth tasted diluted and not much beef flavor or aroma. I feel like it contained msg because I'm sensitive and I was having dry mouth and thirsty throughout the night. The pho filet was sliced a bit thick for being filet but it was very soft and chewable. Both pho had lots of meat. Wings were okay. Had better but I enjoyed the sauce. My favorite dish was the broken rice dish. Great price for the portion you get. On the smaller side but perfect for me. The steamed egg loaf was moist. The grilled pork was a bit salty but had a lot of flavor. Wasn't as tender but still good. I like how the prices are kept low.
