    Beef pho.

Hubs and I spent the morning wandering the central shopping district, just taking in the sites. We'd had a light breakfast before leaving our hotel, hoping we'd run into some interesting spot to augment our light breakfast. After a few days of more traditional Austrian food, I was all too happy to stumble upon this spot. Hands down, outside of the pho places I went to in Vietnam, this was the best pho I've ever had. Didn't require any hoisin sauce, no fish sauce, no soy sauce. Perfectly balanced broth, with a nice proportion of thin rice noodles, meat, bean spouts, onions (green and red!), and cilantro. My only comment is that they only offer one size, and as scrumptious as it was, I definitely would have appreciated a size large! Hubs got the same pho I did (beef), and enjoyed his too. It isn't the biggest menu, there's limited seating, and cash only, but we would absolutely come back here each and every time we make it back to Vienna. It's just a short walk off of the main central shopping district's pedestrian path. Highly recommend this place!

Cha gio - Vietnamese Spring Rolls

This place is located off Schwedenplatz right around the corner of a pharmacy (right across from Frank's Steak House). It is a small place, but the menu selection is good, the restaurant is clean, and the service is great. Although I did not try the pho (noodle soup) this time, I had the duck with chili and basil, with rice on the side, as well as a red cabbage salad. It was pretty good. I also had the cha gio (Vietnamese fried spring rolls), which were also pretty good, though I thought it was a little bit pricey for the small portion given. I don't know, maybe I just got a little bit spoiled after eating at a Vietnamese restaurant in Bratislava where the spring rolls were much bigger and cheaper! But anyway, I think this place does very well for itself, and if it's not crowded, it isn't a bad place to sit down and have dinner, though I can see it can get cramped on busy days, so in that case, you are better off just taking your order to go.

Small restaurant near Vienna Marriott. front door is draped for cold wind ( it February as of this…read morewriting ) it helps but is breezy. It's filled today with Viennese - lots of German discussions. The close seating makes for loud conversation. The mid day special came with a mixed salad in a fried open wrap (bowl) - tasty but a bit Heavy on oil. The mid day menu is in German - take a minute understand it. The main menu is German and english. The kitchen is small and backed up quickly as the tables filled for lunch. In true Austrian style each dish is served correctly - plating was good and the spice/freshness showed. It just takes a while. Sitting by the door is uncomfortable. Spring rolls - elegant and complex flavor. The detail on the dish is impressive (for an American used to Simple Pho.) Sparkling water of course and they have Singha! Egg rolls where not wrapped tightly and absorbed a lot of oil. While crisp it was oily and suffered in eating (oil every where) taste was good but different for well made layered egg rolls. Sauces where good and appeared made in shop. Setting the cut edge down helped drain oil. These are served hot and stayed that way for several minutes, the inside can burn your mouth so be careful. I would get these again - the flavor is worth it The shrimp garlic noodle dish arrived. Shrimp Panco and garlic sauce cooked perfectly. The noodles where poor, the sauce off - disappointing. The Shrimp however made you want a dinner portion, flavorful - I would order it again - maybe on cabbage and skip the noodles. A table treat for desert are small fruit dishes. The pineapple was great - it was small.. but a great add to the meal.

After a week solid in Germany and Austria enjoying traditional fare, we stumbled upon this…read morecharming, warm and welcoming Vietnamese restaurant. The duck salad appetizer is married beautifully with mint, red onion and chili infused spices that really give it a kick. I noted hints of lemongrass and it was so good and the duck prepared so perfectly with both crispy and soft meat, we ordered a second dish of it to share at our table. The Pho soups are delicious too. We were less enthralled with our red coconut curry with vegetables, but only because we anticipated medium heat but it was just sweet and very mild. Our restaurants in the states add heat, so we would just recommend if you do as we'll, to ask--they can certainly do it. The service was very good, a sweet Viet girl made sure to check on us, but not where it was distracting. candlelit tables were and the black and white themed dining room were really stunning. I highly recommend this to local Viennese as well as tourists--it was reasonable yet delightful. Even their wines by the glass did not disappoint!
