I had held off visiting Pho Dollar for a while because I couldn't figure out if they had vegetarian options--but a friend wanted to go for her birthday, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm SO glad I did! They have a nice vegetarian menu that includes vegetarian pho with plain or fried tofu (just be sure to specify *vegetable* broth instead of beef when ordering--even on the vegetarian menu, for some reason, beef broth is the de facto offering). The pho is delicious and so satisfying--the perfect healthy comfort food as we head into winter. Additionally, the space itself was quite a surprise. It doesn't look like much from the outside--but the split-level bar/dining room is very nice and spacious. Very clean and comfortable. The staff is also really friendly and inviting. I liked it so much that I brought my husband the next day for dinner. He tried the beef pho as well as a pork banh mi and pronounced them a hit (this is saying something; he's hard to please!). A few days later, I visited with out-of-town-friends who are definitely "foodie" types and they also raved about the meal (although one found the lemongrass tofu to be a bit too spicy). Pho Dollar is the best little pho shop in Buffalo. The staff are friendly and always ready to welcome you upstairs to the dining area when you walk in. The decor is cute and quirky. When they are busy, you may have some trouble getting your check, but you can always go to the counter and pay when ready. Suggested Appetizers: They have the most delicious Pork Bahn Mi I've ever had (they have a beef option too, but pork is best) and we always order one when we visit and share it as an appetizer. Bahn Mi is a grilled seasoned pork, pickled carrot and radish sandwich with mayo on very tasty french bread. I wish I knew where they got their bread, it's great. My boyfriend and I often talk of ordering 10 Bahn Mi's and just sitting at a table with a pile of these delicious sandwiches and pigging out. Their fried spring rolls are also excellent and come piping hot with a dish of amazing fish sauce for dipping. (I have been known to drink the leftovers.) Pho: The pho is always delicious with the typical savory broth, rice noodles, and onions. For a first timer, I suggest the rare beef slices (my favorite). Even if you're a person who eats their steak well done you will like this one. Any pink beef cooks quickly and completely in the hot broth once you stir it in. My boyfriend often gets the combo of beef and meatballs. The meatballs come in slices of what I would consider to be interestingly textured "mystery-meat" but he swears by them. So try them out if you're feeling adventurous. :) There are also even more adventurous pho flavors with tripe and tendons. Drink: I suggest if you're willing to pay the somewhat high price for it, getting the fresh lime soda. I think it's Soda Chanh. Hmm, where do I begin? This was THE strangest dining experience I have ever had. They keep the second star for the once again amazing Goi Cuon spring rolls with peanut dipping sauce and the rather tasty Jasmine Tea with Limeade. This time, I went for dinner with a friend and I decided to try the famed Pho. Maybe I ordered the wrong one because while it wasn't bad, it was rather flavorless. I have definitely had better. When we first arrived, my friend asked for a drink from the bar. But we were told there was no bartender working and thus, only beer was available. I counted at least three employees in sight but I guess none of them were capable of making drinks. I've eaten here before and thay make delicious food. This time I ordered takeaway and had Pho with rare beef and tendon, chicken wing appetizer, and summer rolls. The Pho broth was delicious and all the ingredients we're fresh. There was a generous amount of rare beef, however, I was very disappointed in the 1 tiny piece if tendon. I've had Pho plenty of times at other places where there were large amounts of tendon, so to me this was really disappointing. The wings were good and came covered in a fish sauce with some sauteed veggies. Definitely different than your typical "Buffalo wings," but a nice deviation. Their summer rolls are just ok. Any Vietmense restaurant I eat at, I always order summer rolls. Theirs are lacking something, but I'm just not sure what. I think it may be the cilantro. Great! That's really all I need to say. My wife and I went here on the recommendation of a few friends. My wife happens to be Vietnamese so I tend to trust her on her assessment of food she grew up on. As you walk through the door you see a bar to your left, which appears to be fully stocked, and you see a staircase to get up into the seating area. The ambience was really nice, nice light fixtures and oddly enough we always laugh that at most Asian buffets they tend to use neon light to line the upper corners of the wall. This place isn't a buffet but they used the neon lights and I think adds to the overall look of the place... Service: Okay. Not great, not horrible, but okay. Seemed like the first time we went there the girl was pre occupied speaking to the other server. The 2nd time was a bit better but nothing stellar. Cleanliness: Very clean. Food: Awesome. The banh xeo was huge and the outside was very crispy. Great flavor. Their pho was excellent. The broth was delicious and the slices of beef were so thin and tender. The bun was a nice surprise. Good bowl of noodles with grilled meats and veggies, better than other places I have had it. If you're thirsty they have this green tea limeade stuff which is awesome. It would be good also paired with a shot of vodka. Would I go there again: YES! Pricing wasn't bad and the food is excellent. This is the Vietnamese restaurant I've been waiting for since I moved to Buffalo over ten years ago. Obviously, I have a lot of patience. I've been to Pho Dollar three times in the last two weeks and two of them were in the same week. It would have been three in a week but a friend talked me out of it. For starters, they have menu items I haven't seen since my days in NYC such as banh mi, ca phe su da, and soda lemon. Their banh mi is delicious. Before PD, I had to go to Toronto to get my banh mi and pho fix. I guess I'll have to give my passport a rest! The banh mi with barbecue pork is great. The sandwich has the perfect ratio of veggies to meat and the dressing accentuates the pork perfectly. The veggies are also slightly pickled and the entire thing is absolutely mouth watering. During my second trip, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner. He made great food suggestions and my coffee personally and it was to die for. Since I was in the mood to try a bit of everything that day, he suggested the Dollar Special mixed meat broken rice. It was FANTASTIC. The platter came with a grilled pork chop, sausage, shrimp, salad, bean thread meat pie, fried egg on a bed of broken rice with fish sauce on the side. The meat pie was cooked perfectly. It is like a Vietnamese quiche. The salad was tasty because it had the same pickled veggies used in the banh mi. The pork chop was incredibly tender and flavorful. The food was so good, I cleaned my plate. I also had a cup of ca phe su da and it was a great cup of coffee. Strong but not acidic. It was definitely a cup of coffee to be sipped, not knocked back in one gulp. On my most recent visit, I had the bun (vermicelli) with fried tofu. The meal was fantastic. There was mint in the bun and it complemented all the flavors in the dish perfectly with the fish sauce tying it all together. The spring roll was perfectly crisp, not greasy, and the filing was flavorful. The fish sauce is well balanced and has a good ratio of fish sauce to the other ingredients. It is not overly sweet and enhances the flavors of the dish and isn't overwhelming. The service the first two times was good but the last time, it was painfully obvious the server was new. She didn't know the menu and downright forgot the accompaniments that usually comes with bun such as fish sauce and the spring roll. I had to ask for them. I'll definitely be back for pho and pretty much everything else on the menu. I tried my friend's pho and the broth was life changing. I have an addiction and the only cure is more Pho Dollar. There is street parking in front of the restaurant and the meters don't have to be fed. The owner told me he bought the spots from the city. The space is big and they now have a liquor license so it would be suitable for large parties and events. read more

Despite the area and outdoor apperance of this little gem, the inside of this establishment is very well done. Resembling the decor of a 60's diner in a way, the place was very clean and atmosphere was pleasant. Waiter was very nice and helped us to understand the menu and even bought out noodles to show exactly what was being described as this was only my second ever experience with vietnamese food. I ordered the beef and rice with mixed veggies and was happily pleased with the flavors and freshness of all ingredients. Vegetables were chunky and very tasty with the sauce and the beef was tender and very well prepared. Ice cold water was brought when glasses reached half way mark and the prices were very fair. I added a fried egg to my dish for $1 and it was runny and not overcooked! There were chili sauces and condiments at each table as well as an ron box of utensils including chop sticks which was nice. Very good overall, my only complaint is the location and condition of the surrounding roads leading to this establishment. 4 out of 5 stars! From now on, I promise to make a point of including Pho Dollar in my regular options because it's delicious. On a cold Sunday night, all I could think of was hot soup. So, between SATO and Pho Dollar, both of which are on my list of places to try, I made the executive decision to come here. It's not exactly in the safest of neighborhoods, but even though it doesn't look like much from the outside, the inside was a pleasant surprise. It was a lot bigger than I had imagined, and they had a huge bar. There were only a couple of other tables finishing up as we got there (around 6:45), and by the time we ordered we were the only ones left in the entire restaurant. One thing to note when reading older reviews is that they have redone their menu, so a lot of the items no longer have the same numbers, or ingredients for that matter. We started with the deep fried pork egg rolls, which was good. It comes with a sweet fish sauce though so if you are anti seafood or can't stand the smell and taste of fish, I would recommend that you ask for a different dipping sauce, or just avoid it. We also got the BBQ beef rolls that have lemongrass and peppers...etc in it and topped with chopped peanuts. It was like a juicy explosion of flavor as you bite down on the tender beef, ending with it being very spicy. I personally eat pretty spicy and had to neutralize the spiciness with my pho. I would recommend getting that dish with a side of white rice - they probably already have a main dish like that so ask the waitress. The appetizer portion though could have easily sufficed as a main dish - there were 6 beef rolls. My pics are deceiving cause we had already started eating lol. The egg rolls came in 3s, so 6 half pieces in total. For our main dish, I ordered the pho with thinly sliced rare beef and brisket. Now, don't be afraid of the raw beef description - it's really not raw. They are very thinly sliced beef and dropped into the noodle soup as they're prepping it into a large bowl, so in the amount of time that it takes them to serve it to you at the table, the thinly sliced beef are already cooked in the hot broth. It is also when you should dump in the bean sprouts and quickly bring the noodles to cover them so that they are "blanching" underneath in the hot broth as you begin to chow down. Some of the brisket had a bit of fat on them and made the dish a bit more flavorful, but as someone who just simply doesn't like "fat meats" that much, I think I'll skip the brisket next time and just order the pho with the thinly sliced rare beef. It's a nice lean cut. My fiancé ordered the beef and pork in spicy broth with noodles. It was quite spicy, kind of like a tom yum soup broth mixed with beef broth with heavy hints of lemongrass. It was just all right. The "pork" they put in there were round slices of what looked and tasted like bologna????? Not a fan. The beef was the thinly sliced beef mixed with brisket. Overall, neither of us were huge fans of it. Although i think it would be a much better dish if they either put real pork in it, or just skip the pork altogether. Lastly, i ordered a bubble tea to go. Being Taiwanese, bubble tea is where it originated and thus I tend to be quite critical. I ordered a green tea one without the milk/cream, expecting that they would just put it in green tea, which is what authentic bubble tea places would do. I didn't read the "flavored powder" part so it ended up looking like a pukey green color without the milk/cream. It still tastes like green tea flavor for sure... With about a pound of sugar!!!!! The tapioca itself isn't too bad, at least it was somewhat chewy and only "slightly" overcooked. I took it home and added a lot of my own jasmine green tea to it (I always have a huge pitcher of it in my fridge) and now it's a little more acceptable, although I'm still afraid of getting instant diabetes if I actually drink all of it. All in all, I highly recommend sharing a pho if you're going to order a couple of appetizers to share! We were starved when we walked in, and were completely stuffed by the time we left, though we didn't quite finish any of the dishes except the egg rolls. It isn't exactly cheap either, in comparable Vietnamese cuisine standards. Having had pho in amazingly authentic places outside of buffalo, I can't say that this is 5 stars, but I'm giving it a generous 4 stars because it satisfied my cravings for hot soup/broth, and also because now I can finally get pho whenever I want since pho dollar is only a couple of miles away! AMAZING! I so thoroughly enjoyed the meal I just had here! Their menu is really big its like a small book I had no idea what to order it all sounded so good. Luckily I had an Asian friend of mine from NYC who is very familiar with Vietnamese cuisine there to help guide me. I ended up with the pork bahn mi and the traditional Pho (which was number 20 on the menu I believe). I also ordered a strawberry bubble tea. The pork bahn mi was excellent to say the least. The pork was cooked just right and had the perfect sweet flavor. The bread was fresh and soft and chewy and the vegetables in the sandwich were nice and fresh. The cilantro on the sandwich added the perfect amount of extra flavor kick. So good I badly want another one right now while I'm writing this. The Pho was really good. If you're unfamiliar with pho it is basically Vietnamese soup that has meat, noodles, and vegetables in it. They give you bean sprouts and lemon grass to add to the pho plus there are spicy sauces that can be added as well. You basically add what you want as much or as little and make your own flavor adjustments however you like. Either way it is so good. They have a lot of different flavors of the bubble tea to choose from. I honestly can't really comment on the quality of the bubble tea compared to other places because this was my first time trying it, but I did like it. The inside of the restaurant is done up really nicely and they even have a really nice full bar that you can sit at if you want. Service is timely and prices are reasonable. I can tell you honestly that this place is extremely popular with all of the people I know who have been here before me. I will most definitely be back here as soon as I can because I need some more of this awesome Vietnamese fare. read more

I've been here twice now, and each time I've really enjoyed what I had! The staff is very friendly, they're quick to keep your drinks topped off, and the food is fresh and plentiful. Both times I was here with groups of 6, and while the tables are a little tight for a group of that size, the servers can handle groups with ease, which is actually really refreshing--I've noticed most places for some reason fall apart if there's a 5th person at a table. I've never understood it, even when I was working in a restaurant. Weird. Anyways, Pho Dollar does not have that problem, they're really good for small groups. While the food is amazing and fresh, I've never actually been obsessed with coming back. Like, it's good and I'm quick to agree to meet here, but it's out of my way and nothing something I'd make a special trip for if it was just me or me and my husband. My first vietnamese experience here, we came I guess at a dead time as only one other patron was having lunch, and i guess the asian family that operates the facility. our waitress wasn't of vietnamese decent, but thats actually nothing new to me. She was quick to bring us our drinks and order. Dad tried the pho and felt it was too salty for his taking and lacked flavor. I ordered the bun dac biet. I have never seen Bun like this before! It had a variety of meat in the dish, plenty of vegetables, and a ton of noodles! The nuc mam was flavorful and I was satisfied with my meal. First of all, the pho broth here is not even comparable to 99 Fast Food. It's very one dimensional. I don't taste star anise or any of the other unique flavoring of CHOICE pho broth, like that of my favorite 99 FF. Also, small portion of meat, and skimpy on cilantro. I added hoisin and soy sauce and it made the broth so much worse that I didn't even finish half of it. Yuck. I liked the bubble tea, at least. The dumplings were pretty much awful. And the spring rolls were okay. Nothing seemed FRESH. Wife ordered wide flat rice noodles with chicken and veg. It was okay, but the noodles were ONE huge noodle that she had to cut with just her fork. Weird. One bowl of pho ended up costing me $17+ because I ordered a side of fish balls that never even came. Highly overpriced as some very good NYC area pho run for $12 or less. This is my second time back at Pho Dollar and it is still amazing! We got the spring and egg rolls, the spring roll was slightly chewy (I think from the frozen shrimp) but still excellent and the egg rolls are small, but you get 3, and they are not greasy. My boyfriends Pho was beef and brisket and was great, with tones of noodles and meats. We added sriracha and red peppers and created a spicy version. My chicken pad Thai was a little light on the sauce and slightly greasy, but that is expected. I got it non spicy and they did a great job of eliminating the burning mouth feeling that I don't like. Usually at a small asian restaurant, you expect quick and basic service, but I received 5-star quality service as i would get from an expensive hotel style restaurant. Our server, Chantelle was delightful and spoke such great English. She was attentive to my alllergies and so friendly. Every dish I tried was good, never had a bad one. I have been to Pho Dollar on many occasions and it never disappoints. I have tried multiple dishes from the menu. I will preface this review by saying that you have to be somewhat familiar with Vietnamese cuisine and be a little adventerous to enjoy your experience here. Some of my favorite items on the menu are: Spring rolls, Bahn Mi, Vietnamese pancakes, the seafood pho, the wonton pho and #33(can't recall the name). The broth is stick to the ribs good. The Bahn Mi is also excellent, with the pork seasoned to perfection. The staff is friendly, but in my experience, not so knowledgeable about the food. I get the feeling that they expect the customer to know what to expect(which is fine by me.) The place could be a little cleaner, which is why I gave it 4 stars. Bummer, I flew in for one night. I was hoping for a a delicious dinner but was too far away from the place I wanted to go. So I was tired, I ordered from Dollar PHo. I got spring rolls. Unfortunately, they had double thick nasty rice wrapper on the back side. Then inside they were filled with fresh lettuce and two shrimp but no cilantro, they did have a bland dry piece of tofu which did not improve the flavor. I did plan ahead for the jarred peanut sauce and added some Sriracha which they charged me for. I also had the pork vermicelli, the pork looked grilled perfectly but didn't have that delicious grilled pork flavor instead bland. The fried eggroll was good. The portion was good. I have good news and I have bad news. Prepare yourself, we're gonna start with the bad. The banh xeo. It just didn't cut it for me. The crepe was soggy. The filling was skimpy and bland. I think I could've made it better at home. Moving on to the good now. The bun bo hue completely blew me away. I am not vietnamese so I can not say if this is the real deal, but I loved all the flavors. Maybe it might be a tad salty, but Id dehydrate for it if I had to. The vermicelli bowls are packed with all the goodies unlike other restaurants. Cheating me out of my vermicelli noodles by piling up the shredded lettuce. No bueno. All in all, great place. Service is okay. You have to flag them down to get their attention but since I was not in a rush I didn't mind it. Usually takes 30 mins for food to come out. Price was okay for entree but for bb tea it was a bit over price 4.5 for like a 12 oz and too sugary for me. I love their chili oil though!
