This restaurant opened 6 months ago, we did not know until we went pick up pizza from Mountain Mike where was a few doors from each other. I walked over to have a look of their menu and the fragrance of the broth I picked up at the front door was quite tempting. I said let's try them next time. Of course the Pho Craze served only take out like the rest of the other restaurants, there were a few tables set at the door front for outdoor dining.
I should have gotten the hint from the name Pho Craze the food might not be authentic, because the store name was not a typical or traditional name as Pho Saigon or Pho 1, 2, 3... Let's try the food... We ordered the beef combo in large, the Bun with grilled pork, shrimp and egg roll over rice vermicelli, deep fried egg rolls to share, shrimp fresh rolls and batter chicken wings.
I like how they packed each items on the beef combo noodle soup: soup and beef balls packed together to keep hot, flat rice noodles Ho Fun (noodles options from rice vermicelli) and other beef items together, chopped green onion and Chinese paisley together, basil, bean sprouts, chili pepper and lime wedge packed together. I saw the raw beef slices were packed separately so I first put the raw beef slices into the soup before add the other ingredients. Kudo to the packing system on the Pho, it is very important to keep the fresh ingredients fresh and hot soup hot. However, the flavor in the soup was not as rich as the aroma from the broth, which I would prefer the Pho from Pacific East Mall in El Cerrito (Richmomd).
Other points were given to the shrimp rice rolls, deep fried egg rolls and Thai iced tea with tapioca: like the thin rice wrapping on the shrimp rice rolls because some restaurants made them a bit thick and the outside of the rice wrapper got harden and chewy, this one had such issue. The egg rolls had good flavor, I wish they used other leafy lettuce rather than iceberg lettuce, was not a good wrapper to the egg rolls, traditional Pho would use other leafy lettuce to wrap the egg rolls. Thai iced tea was strong enough to survive the melting ice.
What happened to the remaining two items? The grilled pork with shrimp and egg roll over vermicelli, the pork was over cooked, the vermicelli was stick together became chunky, and pork was lacked of flavor. The chicken wings coated with Japanese tempura batter, but they did not get marinated or seasoned before deep fried so the wings were also lacking of flavor.
Flavors are the biggest keep component in Vietnamese cuisine, and some of the food we ordered were lacking. I would still visit again not only to give support to the new local restaurant in town, but also wanted to give them a chance an try the other items on their menu, such as the shaking beef with stir-fried noodles, the sandwiches and deep fried tofu.
Service was nice and the pricing was reasonable, however, I hope they double check the orders before handing over to the customers, they almost screwed up my order glad we did not drive away when the guy behind the counter came to look for us to check one of our bags. Give them a try, they are still new. read more
