The service is usually tereible. Couterintuitive to what you would think, the full time regular severs are the worst. Sometimes you may get one good experience if you go when it's slow. Because if this, I had taken this restaurant out of my pho rotation. Came with a friend during lunch because she drove and it was as bad as I remember. The food is decent to pretty good. Prices are good. Try Pho 515 inside C Fresh or Fawn's or Golden Triangle if it's a family outing and service is important. My favorite Pho so far in Iowa! The chicken Pho was delicious! Especially with the spicy sauce at the table! Definitely will be back again!!

I watched google review and I thought this restaurant is good. Then I took a girl on a date today's noon. The food is very good here, especially the soup. It's also cheaper than pho in Iowa City. But the problem is that the serving is so bad. The server who took us to our seats look very mean and disrespectful, which ruins my mode of date. The water she serves didn't even have a straw. We didn't even get a fork when we eat noodles. Not all white people know how to use Chopsticks okay??? Pho tastes good, just hope that they can change their way of serving people read more

Dined here with a group a while back on a whim and realized we really should have looked at a menu first. It was really last minute so we didn't think to do so. We thought we'd have some meatless options, but there was really nothing we could get besides fried rice. I tried to order a bahn mi sandwich with tofu (as I had at many other Vietnamese restaurants without an issue). They brought out a side of tofu and vegetables plus the bread (uncut without a knife) and said I could just make it myself. They also brought it out long before the rest of my tables' food. The whole experience made for an awkward lunch all in all. The servers all seemed really all over the place and frazzled when it was really not busy at all. I've never dined out and been told to make my own food before. Weird, guys! We definitely don't plan on going back. If you're a meat eater, you may enjoy the food, but the service is very lackluster. read more

I've had the worst service not only once but twice. My boyfriend and I thought it would be nice to bring my mom here since she loves Pho and rarely eats out. Coming from California, I'm very familiar with great quality Pho. We came to Pho 888 for dinner, I completely knew that it was a rush during that time and tried to be patient however we waited 20 minutes before our waitress came to take our order and 50 minutes after that before our food was served. Other customers who were there after us received their food first! Anyways, after that whole ordeal, I thought I'd give them another chance, maybe this time during there slowest time of the day. I arrived at three, I was greeted, and my order was taken after 10 minutes. After waiting 40 minutes after that I walked out. Never again will I ever go there. Never. Don't waste your time. The food was not good. I got a papaya salad because they had nothing in there menu that was vegetarian. So since I saw it had no animal products on the salad I got it. When I got the salad it had big pieces of crab in it. I told them that it was not on the menus that there was crab in it and they said it was a traditional thing. I don't mind if it is but it would have been great if it was on the menu. So they exchanged the meal for a veggie Pad Thai. Which was really nice of them. They are food is ok. fried rice was honestly pretty dry, The waitress was kinda rude towards my table of younger people (we came in as a bigger group) she was very rushed and told us to "hurry up" I have been there before and have never had a really bad experience but idk she wasn't very polite when taking our order. I've lived in Des Moines my whole life and I have only been here a few times. One Sunday, a bunch of my friends and I decided to come here for some much needed hangover pho. We were able to put in our orders really quickly and the food didn't take too long to come out either. Unfortunately, there was a small mix-up between who had what kind of pho but other than that, the service was pretty good. I ordered the #21 and a cafe sua da; all of which only set me back $10. That's an amazing deal after living in a place where pho is over $10. The pho was very filling and pretty tasty but I've had better. The food here is really good, not much to complain about. The service is what brings it down to a 3 for me. Our party waited over an hour for our food and then it didn't come out together either. Close to five stars! I come from a city where authentic Vietnamese is our only form of Asian food. And I've tried nearly every place. I'd put Pho 888 in the top 15 percent, no doubt. The pho was flavorful and rich. The rare beef was tender and lean, which I really appreciate. The spring rolls and peanut sauce we very good as well, but not quite as good as they are at my favorite place back home. That is the reason for 4 stars, not 5. But don't worry, I am being fair. The other restaurant in question also got 4 stars as well because there are several things they do not do as well as Pho 888. Definitely worth visiting. Don't hesitate! read more

Overall great and authentic food. The menu has a good variety of choices. The only downfall is the serivice. Service is slow and our waters seem to never get refilled especially when eating pho. The pho seems to have a lot of MSG or salt which makes you extremely thirsty afterwards though delicious and worth the thirst. The workers seem to not care much for good service. The only thing that brings us back is the food. The pho is only good during fresh new batches of pho broth as well. The broth is watered down at certain times of the day. They also have things on the menu for example: Sticky rice, that they never seem to have in stock or the steamed rice rolls they had at one point. Sundays around noon can be extra busy and during those days, when they know that it's going to be busy, they should stock up on a few more workers to accomadate the crowd. Impressed with alot of items on the menu. After eating there about 8 times and requesting the waiter for their popular/recommended dishes, the food for the most part was pretty good, but nothing really stands out as amazing. Good Vietnamese Restuarant to try if you want to change palette from your regular Viet place. Note: We didnt find any diaper stations in the mens /womens restrooms, something consider if you're bring infants. Changing them in your car may be an option. read more

Their broth is not homemade. I could tell right off the bat that they use Pho base cubes, which I regularly use In my cooking when I don't want to spend a lot of time making homemade broth. These cubes can be found right at the double dragon next to this restaurant actually! There's nothing wrong with the cubes, and they probably could have passed it off as authentic to me IF it wasn't so diluted. That pretty much gave it away. There is also a very specific consistency to these cubes when made into a broth. The flavor is so rendered down and compact that there is virtually no fat residue in the broth, unlike in homemade pho! I might have come in on a bad day though, I'm not sure. I also found a thick and stubby grey hair on the side of the bowl. The only thing that didn't keep me from being thoroughly grossed out was the fact that it was only on the side of the bowl and not directly in my food. I can accept the hair as something natural that happens sometimes. They also had bad service, the waitress didn't come back to our table once for refills! It was disappointing considering that it wasn't even busy. I could have understood if it was busy. I didn't find the inside too appealing either. It was dirty. They don't take very good care of their floors, tables, Menus, etc... I felt like I didn't want to touch anything. It did not give me that homey feel that I usually like in restaurants. A good things though, is that they give you a lot of stuff to put in your pho, and give you extra bean sprouts if you ask! So don't think they skimp on the beansprouts or anything if you don't see a lot, all you have to do is ask for more! Overall, not the worst, but not very good. If Pho all season or the Vietnamese Cafe in the mall was closed for some reason, I might go here as a last resort. read more

Food is great. Usually a little busy been here 4 times even with the fluctuation shouldn't have to wait 20-30 minutes to order you me food and another 15-20min for the food. Got skipped and had to grab our own straw and let a waiter know we were ready to order. Water cup was emptied and never got a refill.
