I love stopping at Philz whenever I travel to California. I was introduced to them back in the day when I was chilling in San Francisco. I love the quality of their beans. I was driving from Newport to Huntington Beach and came across this location in Costa Mesa. The store is a little hidden from the main road and not very spacious. But the drinks and customer service were great as always. I went in wanting to try something new, but defaulted as always to my longtime favorite Ice Mint Mojito. Phil Jaber founded Philz Coffee in 2003 and spent years experimenting with various coffee beans from around the world to create over 30 different unique blends. Each "cup of love" is custom made in front of you and finished off with their signature mint leave. The Philz baristas make sure your drink is to your liking before you pay. As an Uber Eats driver, I frequent this location a lot. Every time I've picked up orders from here, I am waiting for atleast 5 minutes with no acknowledgment from staff. Today, in particular, as I entered the cafe, a staff member smiled at me but did not offer assistance. It wasn't until a few conversing staff members made their way from the stock room to the front, that I was acknowledged and that happened minutes after they came to the front. Their backs were turned and they proceeded to handle their own tasks instead of prioritizing their customers. I also noticed the line was getting backed up and patrons also did not receive assistance from some time. Please acknowledge those who need service. It can impact someone's schedule. For my first time I decided on trying their iced oatmeal cookie coffee and it was perfect. I asked for their lowest possible sweetness and it was just right. Also tried their egg bites and they are so much better than the ones from Starbucks. The only downside was that it was a bit of a longer wait time to get my drinks-but it was a busy Friday morning around 7:45 am. Parking can be tight and the wait for your order can also be a bit longer. Next time I will order ahead on their app. Also they do not offer any type of rewards at the moment. Great coffee, but parking can be challenging if you are in a rush. My orders have mostly been great, though one time my mint mojito was bitter because the sugar at the bottom had not been stirred. Store feels more retail than a coffee shop. There is a lot going on in terms of visuals, but it is very bright. Parking lot is small and limited though there is a structure for validated parking. Each store has its own unique vibe, and some even offer slightly different menu items. This particular spot is spacious, located near South Coast Plaza, and--bonus--it's not inside the mall. Parking is easy and convenient, if you want to order ahead or pick up quickly. They indoor and outdoor seating. This location tends to get busy probably because it's by the mall and John Wayne Airport, so I recommend ordering through the app. You can grab your drink at the counter without waiting in line. Plus, you get a complimentary upgrade when you download the app for the first time, and you can start earning rewards right away. They also rotate seasonal drinks. I'm still hoping they bring back the Spiced Vanilla Soul--I tried it here and it was so good: smooth cold brew topped with little bits of cinnamon. I also remember getting a burrito here. Really good coffee. Really good service. But really pathetic seating for someone in a wheelchair. It's just facts. All of your stools sit way higher than a wheelchair would sit. So try sitting at a lower level like a wheelchair to get an idea and see if you're comfortable. Your tables come up to my chest. I feel like a little kid at the adult table at Thanksgiving. It's not. I would really like to sit inside and enjoy my beverage, but I can't. But good coffee. The fix is so simple. Sure, there are lowered tables outside. But sometimes the weather isn't good to sit outside. If you could get a table like one of the outside tables, that is the same level on the inside, there's your solution. During my visit, it seemed they were having some sort of technical issue with their iPad registers, so there was a slight delay in taking our orders. The coffee shop has a surprising amount of seating, both in open areas and tucked away in small nooks. However, every seat was taken that Wednesday afternoon. If you're lucky enough to have a Philz nearby, how can you not go!? The Costa Mesa location is one of the newest in Orange County and it does not disappoint with the vibes! Spacious interior with plenty of seating. Outdoor patio right across the street from South Coast Plaza. Huge parking structure with 2 hour validation! Passcode for the restroom is posted by the register, and the employee will validate for you up there as well. Also, this location is hands down quicker at getting their drinks out than the fullerton location due to a larger format with more staff members working, which is a plus! I usually like to hit up moms and pops but have added Philz to my coffee rotation. I like the Philtered Soul which has hints of hazelnut maple and caramel, unsweetened, and medium cream. I have to admit, I need to branch out and try other coffees on their menu. When something is already so perfect, it's hard for me to try something else I order by app and pick it up before 7:00am so parking is not an issue. We tried the Nutty Caramel Nirvana and a Mocha Tesora to drink and ordered a breakfast burrito to go with it. The service was very average, there wasn't much conversation and they weren't really helpful when we asked questions. More specifically, when we ordered we asked for a breakfast burrito (not realizing that there was more than one option) and the person at the register asked which one and when we asked what kind they had she just looked in the general direction of one of the display cases and didn't say anything. Not the worst interaction, but the experience could've been better if she had taken the time to help us. The burrito turned out to also be very okay. It was only a little bit bigger than the packet of Cholula that came with it and did not have a lot of contents in it. The drinks were also very average. The coffee flavor was not very strong and the add ins didn't offer much of an improvement. It was very difficult to taste any of the flavors/ingredients that were supposed to be added to the drinks. This could've been my fault, but by the time we finished the Nutty Caramel Nirvana, there was just one large mound of cinnamon that wasn't very pleasant to consume at the end. read more
